Guiding Question Sets (from Food Inc Participant Guide)
- Are there any rights that all animals should have? If animals should have certain rights, do you think those rights also apply to animals we raise for food, like chickens or pigs?
- Are there any rights that these farm animals should have? If so, what are they? How do you think farm animals should be treated? How do your ideas compare to what you saw in the film?
- Richard Lobb of the National Chicken Council says in the film, “In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” What does this statement mean? Do you agree or disagree with it? How might this perspective affect the way that chickens are raised?
- As consumers, do we have the right to know how the chickens we eat are being raised? Do we want to know?
- What did the film bring up about people’s rights?
- What are the connections between the individuals involved in raising chickens? Which players are more valued? Who has the most and least rights?

ReplyDeleteI don’t have any pets at home. I don’t think pets doesn’t have same rights with the people who live with them. The only right the pets have is to treat them properly, feed them food, and giving them a shelter or a home. The pets rights are limited depending on their owners. Depending on the person, everyone is different and they could either choose to let their dog sleep on the same bed with them, pet can use the same bathroom with you, or let them eat with you at the dinner table.
’
All animal have the right to be treated properly and to be fed what they were to design to eat instead of eating some corn, or locking them up at some dark warehouse. Its better if the animal were to fed something healthy so when the consumer buy the meat, they wouldn’t have to worry if e coli or any other unhealthy chemicals were contaminated in the meat. It wouldn’t make them sick or cause any death like Kevin. I believe If we treat the animals right then we wouldn’t have so many problems with e coli.
’
Even though the animals we raise for food like pigs or chicken, they don’t have many rights when they are to be slaughtered but they have right to eat the foods they deserve to eat and treat the animals nicer instead of treating them like some brand product. Just because they aren’t human doesn’t mean that they don’t have have feelings just as human have. If you were in their shoes, how would you like it if people every day feed you the same cheap food and lock you up in some dark warehouse and never let you see any sunlight or some fresh air? If you ask someone’s opinion, would they rather eat a meat thats healthier or eat a meat thats filled with e coli?
’
The animal should be treated with some respect even if they were to be slaughtered. The way I see it they treat animals like a product. Its better to treat animals like animal instead of coldheartedly treat them like some kind of an item. We should give them some fresh from outside, feed them the foods they were specifically designed to eat, and treat them nicer instead of throwing them like a bag of potatoes. My ideas compare to the film is very different because the workers don’t care if they treat the animal injustice or lock them up in some dark house as long as it can make money off of it. Even though on the advertisement they say how its fresh and healthy for you but really they don’t care about our health, only want to gain more money off of the consumers.
’
What that statement means is that Richard Lobb think of animal as some food product that he could make money off of. Its true that animal are consider as food and we need meat in order to have protein in our system but that doesn’t mean that we should treat them like some product. Because of the way Richard Lobb thinks, they redesign the chicken breast to grow bigger because most people enjoy eating the chicken breast but what most of them don’t know is that chicken can’t keep up with their body growing rapidly. Because of the way he thinks, the meat quality has gotten down and we have many problems with the meat system with e coli.

ReplyDeleteThe company because if it wasn’t for them there wouldn’t be much of a problem of e coli in our food today. The one responsibility us the consumer have is we have the choice of deciding what food to eat. There will be others that decide to eat unhealthy foods which will be at their fault if they were to be sick or possibly have diabetes from eating too much junk food and turned obesity.
Remember how there was a mom that lost her son because he ate at a fast food place but ended up dead within 10 or 9 days? Imagine how his mother would feel losing his son when hes only 4 or 5 years old. That was one of the repercussion that the mom and the little boy had to go through. If they did knew about the defective meat they might have avoided the tragedy and probably moved on with their normal lives.
I believe that we should have the right to know how the chicken we eat are being raised because we would know if they had been feeding the chickens something unhealthy as to feeding them corns or not. Also, if we did knew how the animals were being raised then depending how they treat the animals, the consumers can avoid the consequences of being sick or maybe even death. Beside if they were treating the animal poorly, that would be consider an animal abuse wouldn't it?
’
Lets say that the consumers want the vegetable to be cheaper then the company would lower the price down and hire farmers to grow the vegetable on their farm. That way people don’t have to worry if by chance the vegetables have been contaminated by something. Then the people would have fresh and healthy vegetables and wouldn’t worry about e coli or anything like it.
The only right that the people have is to have the freedom of choice. The consumers have the ability to choose which food they want to eat depending on the person. The people in the film had said that they don’t get to sue the company if the meat wasn’t to their liking or not. If the only power the consumer have is to choose which food to eat then wouldn’t it make sense if they don’t buy the product from the industry then the company would change just so that they would have their customer back.
Since the company keeps on making the farmers in debt, and the farmers doesn’t have the right to have a saying, its the farmers job to follow the orders from the higher up so they had to feed the animal we eat corn. I believe that the companies are more valued than the customers because the company are protected by the government. If someone wants to complain or sue the company, then they would be going against the law. Even though customers were suppose to have a right to have a say but that wasn’t always the case.

ReplyDeleteI have 3 pets at my Mom’s, 2 at my Dad’s
Usually, my step dad usually treats our dogs like humans. Not with everything though. my pets have the right t.o be walked every day, the right to live and eat and the right to live comfortably.
but they can’t go wherever they want when they want, they don’t eat at the dinner table and have to be fed. all animals should have the right to life, food and comfortable living.
Farm animals are not treated like pets. They are treated like “Food” and not as “Friend” it’s bad enough that they will have to die and then BE EATEN, why can’t they have to have a proper life while they have life with the same rights a dog or a cat would have and ’the right to live in an open area with fresh air.
None of the animals in the video are treated fairly. All animals are treated like product and not a living creature“In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” It means that the way the chickens are manufactured and they amount of chickens that’s being produced. They’re not animals, they are just food like in any other farm. That go from born, to full grown, to death, to store and I disagree. STRONGLY disagree with this.
If something living is being treated like a NONLIVING object, it will be treated like any other product in a factory. The chickens are thrown around and stuffed and packaged
The companies must make sure the animals are being treated right, and to stop focusing on the space and efficiency of their “farm” Consumers must speak up and know where their food is coming from!I want to know where my food comes from! but not everyone wants the veil to be lifted.

ReplyDeleteMajority of people own pets, and we love them like they’re apart of the family. I have pets at home and they may not be able to choose what they get to eat or when but we do choose the food that we think they like the most. Obviously, the cats don’t get to choose what or when they eat, but my cats are indoor outdoor cats. If they wanted they could go out and catch something to eat. They have the freedom to go wherever whenever they want and then they can come home be safe and be taken care of. Animals should have all rights: freedom, equality, etc. It is horrible that bears get shot for walking around in a neighborhood looking for food. It sickens me that humans think that animals are less than us. We are all animals. That poor bear was walking around looking for food not trying to harm anyone or anything, but is shot because he “might” cause a danger. Humans need to remember that these animals were here before us.
Killing animals for food is human nature, but slaughter is inhumane. I think they should create more humane conditions in the slaughterhouses. It is not necessary to abuse these animals for their whole lives before we eat them. Farm animals should live in an area where they have a lot of space and grass to eat, not corn that has harmful effects on them. Just like humans, life comes to an end for us all, but they deserved a happy life before they have to go. What I saw in the film was sickening. The chickens were confined in little barns squished together stepping on each other. They are fed foods that make them have bigger breasts for more prophit. What the companies and farmers don't think about is the negative effects this has on the chickens. Their bones cannot hold all of their weight and they eventually end up getting trampled by the other chickens because they cannot stand. The cows, chickens, and pigs lives everyday of their lives in their own feces. Do people leave their babies in their diapers for numerous days? No, because they’ll catch disease. That is not healthy, to the product or the consumer. They will catch diseases and contaminate the food.
Farmers and workers are starting to view raising the chickens as producing food. This statement means that they are not raising a living thing, they are making food. I completely disagree because those are still chickens, chickens have feelings, they are living things. For the time that you are preparing the chickens for the product, you need to care for them as chickens. Taking care of the chickens with the perspective that this man has will lead him to treat the chickens poorly, basically “oh well they are going to die anyway”, or “this won't hurt them they’ll be killed later on”. The companies need a wake up call because what they are doing is wrong. The government can threaten to shut down these companies if they don’t treat the animals right. Why is it that farm animals are treated differently than other animals? Are we allowed to treat our cats and dogs poorly? No, we would get arrested if we did. Consumers can also prove a statement to the companies by not buying their products. Food animals are still animals, and deserve the right to equality.

ReplyDeleteIf farmers and workers stop valuing the product, people will start being served foods that don't have as good of a nutritional value because if the owner doesn't think of them as an animal then they won’t feed them right; there fore they won’t have any nutrients. Healthy food equals healthy chickens, healthy chickens equal healthy food, and healthy food equals healthy humans. If our chickens are being fed food without nutritional value, we are getting no nutrition; it’s the circle of life. Everybody should see how the chickens and animals are being raised but we don't because the companies have more laws to protect them than laws that get them in trouble. The big companies hide everything that goes on behind closed doors, and people don't know what their food goes through before it appears on their plate. Companies are more protected than the consumer and that’s not how it should be. The problem is the companies care for their money more than they do of the consumers health. If a person dies from contamination they could care less as long as it won’t affect their income. We brought these problems among ourselves; but it’s not the first time. Humans were scared of sharks, so we installed beach nets in many beaches with the intent to reduce the risk of shark attacks, but unintendedly the nets killed many harmless animals. In a way they did reduce the risk of shark attacks; if you consider reducing the shark population. Sometimes we want what isn't best for us.
Another huge issue with the food companies is the way they treat their workers. The workers become slaves to the companies and are not treated right. The immigrants are hired by the companies and instead of the companies getting in trouble for hiring illegal immigrants, the workers are being arrested. They hire people who think they don't have any rights so they will do more for the company. Workers are treated poorly as well as the animals; the company has the most rights and whoever earns them their money has the least. Selfishness is what it all comes down to. Nobody can get to them, and that’s not how it should be when these places fail to test the meat for contamination multiple times. They deserve a serious consequence like being shut down. We need someone to protect our food. If the FDA isn't going to do it, then us as consumers need to make a statement for the well being of our health.
Well i have only just one dog name Jack. My dog has some of them like they deserve to eat same as leave. They have the right to do exercise, eat, bond with their owner and to be respect. To get respect from you owner and maybe to have a time to maybe play by themselves. Well they should have some source of respect like the cows ,chickens, or even birds because they live they can't think but they can feel how you treat them. Yes because like i said they are animals that we eat but they're also living think is true they can't think but they can field how you treat them. It be ok if you killed them in a way the animal doesn't feel too much the pain. They at least have right to eat healthy foods and leave part of their lives healthy or in other worlds not torture.
ReplyDeleteWell one of them would be treat them right at least that what they have and healthy foods. Well like treat your dog except different rights like the dog is always around you and you don't killed them and the farm animals you killed them but i think they have a right to live the right way not keep them in pain for at least the time that they have like old times.’Well i think i didn't like the part that they sued the good farmer that at least the bacteria wasn't as much as the factory and they sued the farmer and i don't think is right if the factory it has more bacteria than the farmers that there animals that were treated the right way like giving them natural food like the farmers. That they are producing money and not good food. Disagree. Well more hormones are spread to humans and children and they win money but the people suffer the consequences.

ReplyDeleteI have one lovely black lab at my house, and believe she has the same rights as my family and I. We are all entitled to food, exercise, shelter, medical attention, and of course, love. We walk her and feed her regularly. She isn’t allowed to sit on the couch, pee on the floor, or disrespect the house or us in any way.
As I stated before, all animals should have the right to proper food, exercise, shelter, medical attention, and kindness. They have the same emotions as humans and deserve to be treated fairly.
Of course those rights apply to animals we raise for food. After all, they still are living creatures. Farm animals, like all other animals and people, have the same rights ( proper food, exercise, shelter, medical attention, and kindness). They have a right to outdoor raising and clean living conditions(not standing around in their own feces).
Farm animals should be treated the same as domestic animals. In the film, they were viewed as profit, not a living, breathing creature. The farmers and companies couldn't care less about the animals’ health.
This statement means that by the companies, the farm animals are seen as money makers, not living creatures. I disagree strongly with this statement. As an animal lover, I don’t see a hamburger, I see a poor cow who was robbed of a happy life. The perspective of being food instead of animals changes all the rights that chickens are granted. The chickens will be deprived of what little quality of life they have left.
I believe the responsibility falls on the companies to understand what is happening and send investigators to different farms to correct the wrongful treatment. Individuals such as the workers should report the wrongful treatment while the consumers stop purchasing the product. The government should oversee the companies to make sure they are correcting the ways animals are treated. The companies should change their ways so the chickens can live happily and not live in stressful conditions.
Animal rights activists will definitely have issues with that position and an uproar. Many meat consumers will be unhappy with that viewpoint and stop purchasing the meat in protest.Companies with that viewpoint may end up going out of business by bad publicity and lack of customers.
I believe we have a right to know how our chickens are being raised, and many people want to know. The issue is, can we afford the healthier chickens and do we care if we consume unhealthy meat? The answer for most people is no.
A situation in Japan mirrors the cheaper food aspect. Since soda can be fattening, Japanese Pepsi companies have created an unhealthy soda that helps you lose weight.
The film showed us that workers can’t speak up(allow filming in chicken houses) or their contract will be terminated. The workers aren’t allowed to rebel in any way or the will face the consequences.
The farmers who raise the chickens hate how the chickens are treated, but cannot do anything about it or else their contract will be terminated. The valued players are the consumers because most don’t care or can’t afford eating organic chicken, and would rather buy bigger portions for less. The chickens have the least rights because they do not have proper food, shelter exercise, and medical attention. The food they are fed shouldn’t be a part of their diet, and they should be entitled to fresh air and sunlight. The companies have the most rights because they can do whatever they want without being corrected.
In the socratic seminar I had in geography, we discussed how other countries eat dogs, and why we find that to be so unethical while we eat cows and chickens. Eatings dogs is perceived as horrible because they are seen as domestic animals and were raised as our pets. Cows and chickens on the other hand, are seen as food.

ReplyDeleteI have both a dog and a cockatiel whose rights my family values as high as our own. Like us, they regularly receive food (some of the best, I might add), clean water, shelter, a place to sleep, and lots and lots of love and kindness. My pets’ rights are limited, however, in what they eat or drink, what time and where to get exercise, and when they are groomed. Our animals are equal to the children in our household and their rights are very high on our priorities.
All animals, I believe, should have at least the most basic rights: food, water, shelter, and kindness. This should be a natural instinct for we are animals as well in more ways than one and those basic rights are what keep us alive.
Animals we raise for food are, essentially, food. However, I do strongly believe that they deserve some rights to raise healthier and happier animals. These animals deserve basic rights such as proper food, water, a clean environment, and space to grow and flourish into great beasts. This would make the animals happier and the consumers healthier.
Compared to the film, my ideas on how farm animals should be treated vary vastly. I believe the animals should have better feed and water and large areas to roam so as to exercise and grow naturally. But in reality, factories shove the animals into gruesome conditions, feed them synthetic food, and give them just a few feet of roaming area while standing in waste and bacteria. This is unacceptable.
This statement means that they do not think the chickens have rights because they are being grown as food, not pets. I disagree with this statement because I think that if chickens were raised more as pets than a product, everyone involved would be happier. And they are, still, animals who think and feel and whose hearts are beating until the day they are slaughtered for consumption. They could at least make their short lives less stressful. Lobb’s perspective, unfortunately, is the major point of view in animal agriculture and is the reason why the chickens are treated and confined in such a brutal state.
It would be the government’s and companies’ responsibility to oversee how their products are being raised and what is put into the consumers’ mouths. The government controls our health after all, so why would they not control the meat products? As a consumer, our responsibility would be to ask and know where our food is coming from and be willing to dig a little deeper in our research and wallets.
Rugile P. EDA Period 4, Ms. Pelfrey Part 2
ReplyDeleteIf animals do not have rights, they are put into stressful situations that result in unhealthier produce that we as the consumers put into our bodies. As consumers, we most definitely have the right to know how the food we eat is raised because we are the purchasers who spend our hard-earned money and then consume the products. We have the right to know what is being processed within our bodies, whether it be bacteria or chemicals or organic meat. Many people, however, do not want to know and would rather be kept behind the veil because they are scared to see what they are eating. But it is important to know, I believe, because even though what we know can hurt us, it does much more good than bad to our bodies.
We are being raised in a society where it is not only normal to demand, but it is normal to receive. Industries are racing each other to meet our every demand- whether it be cars, clothing, or food. A recent example could be the popular rising trend of high-waisted shorts for girls. Last summer, only a few donned the now popular apparel but quickly grew until almost all of the top clothing companies were racing to purchase the shorts. Another example is the recent rise of popularity for organic food. Stores like Trader-Joe’s have been selling organically produced food for years and it wasn’t until recently that there store became the neighborhood market. Flea markets began to rise as well and even Wal-Mart included itself in the trend by selling organic produce. All because we showed a sudden interest and demanded them to be more accessible- and the industry answered.
Farmer’s rights and the chicken catcher’s rights were briefly touched upon in the film. The farmers who provide the top meat companies with their animals have almost no rights what with them almost being ‘slaves’ to the industry. They must obey the company’s demands and regulations towards their animals and do as they say or else be evoked of their contracts. Chicken catcher’s also do not get many rights for most of them are illegal and have no rights at all. Therefore, they can be treated by the companies as they please and can easily be manipulated or replaced.
The industry and the farmers are the ones involved in raising chickens; however, only one actually raises the livestock and the other oversees it- sometimes with a strict hand. The industry is more valued because they are the multi-billion dollar companies that earn all of the money and control the farmers, animals, and even consumers. The farmers are not valued as much and have less rights because they are put under the industry’s thumb and are slaves to raising the chickens. Why do we not care as much about the other livestock and their farmers? If other countries eat dogs, why is it so wrong to eat chicken? How can we improve their way of life without draining too much money?

ReplyDeleteI have 2 pets at home a cat and a dog. My pets don’t have the same rights as us, my dog cannot sleep on our beds and couches. there is only one couch that my dog can be on and that couch is not very nice and were going to get rid of it in a month or two. My cat is really lazy and fat and sleeps most of the day. He has a chair that he sleeps on. My dog is limited because he loves to run but he can’t always do that because our yard is not very big so we have to take him to a park then he can run, and we can’t always take him for walks because we are not always home.
All animals should have the right to live in a clean and open space where they are fed properly. these rules definitely apply to animals we raise for food. farm animals definitely have rights, they are: live in a clean and open environment where they are fed properly and killed humanely.
They should be treated like the animals at Joel's farm with grass fed animals and open fields. what I saw in the film were cramped cages with cow/pig manure everywhere, dirty cows/pigs and no grass the animals had to go to a giant bowl to eat corn
It means that they are raising a product not an animal. I totally agree that they are raising a product not an animal, because they try to get the chicken as big as they can in the shortest amount of time. The food companies don't care how the chicken feels. Well i hope it will make the companies realize that they need to be nicer to the chickens and put the chicken in an open range where they can run free.
The consumers need to check the labels and pick out good food that is not genetically modified food.’ I think that no matter what there will still be companies that will find the cheapest way out like injecting chicken with salt water and feeding animals corn instead of grass. the government need to make sure that companies are treating the animals good (not putting the animals in cramped dirty cages) and the companies need to follow the government rules.
Feed them grass instead of of corn, give them open ranges instead of a cramped closed off space with way too many cows/pigs/chickens in it.

ReplyDeleteI think all animals should have certain rights including the animals that we eat. The farm animals should have fresh air and be able to go outside. The animals should not be kept inside everyday and they should not be fed to the point where the can not stand up.My ideas are different because what I saw in the film they kept them inside and pushed them around with big machines. The statement "In a way, we're not producing chickens,we're producing food", is very accurate because if the farmers wanted to produce chickens they would feed them a moderate amount of food and take them outside. If the farmers and companies have that state of mind they are not going to change the way animals are treated because all they want to make is money. As consumers we have a right to know how the chickens are raised. The way chickens are being raised right now, not a lot of people would want to know but if people start finding out how the animals are raised the companies might be forced to change the way they treat animals. The company is the one that is in charge of everything and the farmers have the least amount of rights because they depend on what the companies say and do.

I think a right that all animals should have is where they sleep/live because that's where their growing up and raised and they could develop illnesses if the area is full of feces and other harmful things. Yes i do think that rights should also apply to the animals we raise for food because even though they will die it doesn't matter there still animals.A right that they should have is if they want to be crammed with a whole bunch of other chickens or like out free running instead of barely being able to move or walk.
think farm animals should be treated fairly because in the film they were being treated very poorly.I think people don't understand that they are animals and have emotions too, they can still feel things when they're getting hurt but they just don't care.
I disagree because i don't exactly know what hes trying to say is he saying that all he is doing is making food because if so hes wrong in the process of it hes hurting them and treated them poorly. There not just food they are live animals too.
I agree that we have a right to know how are food is being raised because its going to our mouth and if it has harmful things in it that can get us ill because of how they were raised and living we would not eat it.My opinion is that i would not like to know I'm pretty sure others wouldn't either because we would get very disgusted and would not want to eat any type of meat anymore.

ReplyDeleteAt home I have a dog a cat and 3 turtles and a rabbit. my pets have the right to be happy most of them time just as humans do. their rights are limited because they can't talk so they have to show us when they want things. the type of exercise i give my dog is playing with her and my parents walk her. I think all animals have a right to a certain quality of life and that does apply to animals raised to be food. i think they should have the right of being fed the right food at least.
’I think farm animals, and all other animals, should be treated nicely and with care. this is different from all ways that i saw excluding the farmer with his small business.’Richard Lobb of the National Chicken Council says in the film,
“In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” This meant that the chickens no longer have animal qualities and are portrayed as not having any feelings. I disagree with that. This affects the way the chickens are raised because there is less sympathy for them and they get treated cruelly.

ReplyDeleteI do not have any pets. But when I had a dog, we left it outside, but we fed it a bathed it weekly. We sometimes took it for walks. I think my pet’s rights were limited because we didn’t always take her out. She just ran around in our backyard. But it wasn’t very cramped. And sometimes we forgot to refill his food. But we did remember to bathe it.
Yes, I think animals should have rights. Animals should not be mistreated in any way because they are still living beings and it is inhumane.
’ Animals, even farm animals, should have some rights because if you were going to die soon, wouldn’t you want to spend your time in a calm, positive state?
’I think they should be kept in an open area for the animals to settle in and not bumping into each other. Also, they can grow properly and not die in vain. Lastly, their food should not be cheap food that isn’t very good for them. Spend a couple bucks and give them their natural food.
Richard Lobb, in a way, is almost saying chickens aren’t living things, they’re just future food. I don’t agree with this statement. Chickens are living things. Also, I’ve heard a lot of people saying different things taste like chicken, so why don’t people just don’t eat chicken? Food-producing companies should give chickens larger space to roam and feed them proper food, not hormones or chemicals that make them genetically. People need to cut down on the fried chicken and chicken nuggets.
There should be a sub-government group that watches over these food producing companies. The workers should be people who enforce these new guidelines. They must also get a background check to make sure they aren’t from those other big companies and try to manipulate this group.
If we were against animals have rights, there would be the other side of the argument protesting against us but people just would still eat this mistreated, poorly kept food.
Yes, we do have a right to know how our food is made from animals. If they were abused or maybe given something that could be fatal if not treated by mistake, it could kill us and it would end up badly for the food companies. Then it’s their faults. People would want to know because it’s almost like natural right.
People who like chips such as Doritos and Cheetos have wanted more, so now (today even) Frito Lay has made slightly bigger bags and slightly higher prices.
Independent farmers who were hired by these big food companies are being controlled by the companies and told to do what they want because the companies are holding their debt over their head and keeping the farmers under their thumb.
These are my final questions: How are chickens mistreated? Should they get a better quality of life? Is what these food companies are doing to chickens, and other meat-producing animals, right?

Do animals have the right to a certain quality of life? This has been a controversial question for years, since the the way food companies produce their food has changed. I don’t have any pets at home but feel strongly for this topic. I believe animals should have the right to have a decent shelter, food, and live a pain free life for as long as they’re living. That is including farm animals like pigs and chickens. They shouldn't have to be tortured while they’re living because just like like humans, they can feel pain. They also shouldn't be squeezed into a space where they can’t even take a couple of steps.
Animals should be treated with respect because they aren't any different from human. They can eat, breath, and reproduce just like humans. The farmers in the video agreed that it was cruel how animals were being treated. In the film, Richard Lobb of the National Chicken Council said, “In a way, we’re are not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” In other words what he trying to say is that since they are not making chickens, they shouldn't have to take in consideration the suffering they are causing them but that they are only making food so chickens job is to grow no matter the circumstances and get killed to be delivered as food which is a selfish statement. The food companies, people, and government are responsible for overseeing the treatment of food animals because they are the ones producing them or contributing to the production of them. Consumers have to take action and be against products that treat food animals in poor conditions and buy products that are food animal friendly( grown more naturally) and that way the companies will change their policy. The government shouldn't allow this to happen because it’s animal cruelty. The companies should provide appropriate space and conditions for the food animals.
Some repercussions some people may have of animals not having the right to a certain quality of life is that they aren't as developed as humans so they should deserve more rights. Also they may say that they were made for food and they’re gonna die anyway. Food prices may go up to pay for the shelter and care of the food animals which could equal to grumpy people. Also it would take longer to produce the food and it wouldn't met the demand of meat.
Consumers should have the right to know how are food is being made(chickens being raised)and should want to know because they pay for it and should be aware of what’s going into their body. People may be disgusted and disagree with what they’re eating and never now. Consumers have a louder say in how things are done in the industry then you may think. For example, when consumers wanted products that help them lose weight companies came out with certain weight lose pills and drinks. Lots offered low calorie snacks.
The film brought up a lot about people’s rights. They said that people that were illegal were working at factories in bad conditions where they can catch diseases and if they got caught by the police the companies would take no responsibility at all and the illegal people would be deported back or put in jail. No matter how some people feel about a certain subject they are sometimes unable to control it because there is always some people with more power over the other. The connections between the individuals involved in raising chickens is that they are disappointed with the way raising farm animals has changed over the years and do not agree with with it at all but feel that its beyond their control. The players more valued are the food companies and farmers and animals. The player with the most rights is the food companies because they have control over the farmers and animals. Some ethical questions that emerged from our discussion to consider are whether it’s ok for people to genetically modify chickens, do animals have the right to a certain quality of life, and is meat being produced by a factory system right.

ReplyDeleteWell i don't have pet.
but the companies can say its different because those are pets and not make to be food products.
’ They should have the right to food and a place to live.
And the farmers are technically providing that.
’ yes they should have the right to be treated with care and not be genetically engineered. To grow at their own pace.
The companies can say its what you are eating and we need a big supply of meat.
They should actually have good living conditions for example clean, not all crammed together, and be given the food that they would actually eat not food that just makes them more plump for us to have more food.
’He mean that we aren't farming chickens to be chickens. They be made for food, food for us. I agree with this because we do need to produce food. But we as have to be careful.
The companies that are having the farmers produce the meat for them. As an individual we should be aware of where the meat came from and who produced it. The government should have people go around and make sure that things are running the way they should.
’
I believe we do have the right to know how our food is being treated and processed, but after watch this video im not so such that as the consumer we want to know more on that topic. in a way the kinda are protecting us because we dont know everything that realy goes on.
How we want more fruits and vegetables for less, and we did get that but they had to have really low pay, and the workers aren't always legal in the US.
’
How we have the right to a certain way of life and if the animals should have that same right.
’
They are always having to borrow from the bank and are always owing them money. The big companies are valued more the the people growing the food, just because they are the ones we actually hear about. Going from the big companies with the most rights all the way to the bottom, and those people are the ones working here illegally. Thats because the co,a pine can get them deported at any time.

Should animals have the same rights we do? Or are they not animals because we are using the animals for food?

I don’t have a pet but I would say that if i had a pet i would let it have the rights that we have like being able to choose what to eat. Also they should have limited rights like not going outside for some exercise when its not the time or because the owner can’t.
They should have the rights to live like a regular human being with an open windowed house, clean space, and eat nutritious food with no enhancers in them. Animals should never be living in an environment where it feels like a jail cell with a dark room they should be able to breathe fresh air and not live in a hoarding environment.
They should have the right of freedom because all animals and people are supposed to be treated like they want to be treated and not like a toy.So the rights that human have should also apply to animals aswell.
Animals should be treated with respect and not have to live like that . I would change every little thing I saw that the farmers would do to those animals in Food Inc. The animals should live in a clean environment with no enhancers and feed them all natural food so that then when we eat our meat we can also eat healthy just like them.
I think that the statement means that they don't care about the chickens and just want to make the chickens better with enhancers so that they can get bigger chunks of money instead of having the chickens regularly with small breast which costs less because the consumers want bigger chunks of meat.
It is the government's job to provide us with organic foods. If they want the people to try and lower obesity they should be helping out by providing us with healthy foods and not food where it has been raised in a clean environment with no enhancers. And the government needs to lower the prices so that low income families have the access to healthy foods.
That they might be selling the consumers the wrong product or selling a product that has dirty chemicals and antibiotics in them so that their product can be better. So the consequence will be that sooner or later someone will sue that company and that company will not get any other markets to sell their product.
Of course we want to know and we do have the right to know how chickens are raised because some of us want to know where our food comes from and what the food that is sold to us contains. Like if the chicken eats all healthy foods and if it doesn't eat other chemicals given to the chicken
When people heard that there meat had antibiotics they demanded that the company's stop because so many deaths had been related to these meats.
That their rights are very limited because the companies that own that farm don’t want any exposure to public for their sake. So undocumented workers are working to ship the chickens and they have so little rights that the company can cancel the contract the have with that farmer and go on looking for another one. With one little mistake you have a big chance of a consequence.

ReplyDeleteI have 2 little dogs at home and they are about 5 years old. The pets i have are treated just like a human would. i am one of those people that cannot see my pets suffer or be abused. All animals, regardless of species, should be treated equally and respectfully. My dogs eat when they want and do another thing they want. It is their choice whether they want to or not.
My pets have any right except run away. At night they are put in cages to sleep that way their are not running around the house. My pets rights are limited though because they do not get to chose what they eat or drink and when they want to go for a walk.
There are rights to every animal on Earth. It is there choice to live or die. If you or I were an animal about to be butchered, you would not want to die. Put yourself in the animals shoes and you would like what you see. All animals should have rights. They should choose when to sink or swim, live or die. No animal should be treated differently.
Animals need rights and they cannot be constantly abused by their owners. The animals that are raised by farmers for produce, those animals basically do not have any right whatsoever. The owners do not care for them, all they care about is the money. To me, i think there are way too many companies that buy the farmers produce from. Those major companies just care about money and people, they do not really care about the animals.
The animals on farms that are going to be killed either way, those animals should at least be treated with care until their death. In the film, the animals did not know how to act because to me, all they thought was, “I am going to die”. That is not what anyone or anything should feel like at all. No animal, farm or not, should be treated any differently than those pets you have at home.
In a way?!?! They are killing the chickens for food. They are not producing chickens. They order the chickens from a farmer, the they are processed then the are butchered and killed for food. In some ways I agree and disagree. I agree because they are producing food but, disagree because they are not producing food. In the film they are producing transformed chicken that has been “modified” to grow faster than usual. They want to have a chicken with more meat in a short amount of time.

ReplyDeleteI have 5 pets at home. My pets do not have the same rights as we do, they do not get to choose when they eat or what they want to eat. They also do not get to choose when they exercise or how they want to exercise. They do, however, get to eat twice a day, exercise everyday, and they get to choose when and how much they want to run around with each other in the backyard. At some degree they are able to get exercise as much as they want, when they want. Just not exercise from me.
Animals have certain rights they are alive like us. These rights should especially apply to the animals we raise for food. These farm animals should live without stress, majority of the farm animals live with stress their entire lives (except the independent farmers) and when you slaughter those animals for food we are ingesting those stress pathogens. Genetic engineering another right for an animal, large companies like Tyson make the chickens breast larger and their organs can’t keep up with the fast growth of their body. The chickens with the rapid growth can only take a few steps and then plop down because they are too heavy to carry themselves.
They are not raising an animal they are only raising food. The chickens aren’t seen as another living creature with rights, they are only seen as food. I am against what they do to these animals, these animals are in stress their whole lives and most of them never even see the sunlight because they are cramped in the chicken house where there is overcrowding, heat, cold, handling, and human manipulation of the animals. Animals should be treated with respect. If we treat our food with respect the food will treat our body with respect.
The companies should treat their animals with respect, they have the power and the money to spend the extra money, not only to make the food better but make the food animals lives better. The government needs to step in and help the people, It’s not healthy ingesting all those stress hormones from the chickens. The people need to step in and buy from independent farmers whose chickens are living stress free lives until their death day. If we start buying our meat from independent farmers the other companies will go out of business.
Rebecca N. EDA#1 Pelfrey Part 2
ReplyDeleteWe should have the right to know what is being done to our food. We are ingesting it and paying for it we should know. Most people probably do not want to know what is being done to their food or how the food animals are being raised. There are antibiotics being added into the food and the animals are in stress their ENTIRE life even after they are dead they have stress in them which means we get those stress hormones when we eat them. How do you like getting your extra dosage of stress for the day?
’ The companies should not have enough power that they can sue people for saying what they want and most of it is true! Consumers like white meat, so to meet the demands the companies altered the chicken to have bigger and larger breasts (white meat). The chicken is now being fed antibiotics and other enhancers to grow faster and larger, their organs cannot keep up with how fast they are growing so then the chickens are only taking a couple steps and end up having to stop and sit down because they can’t carry their own weight.
The higher companies that own all the farms always win. The farmers, chickens, and the consumers are the losing parties. The farmers that are raising the chickens for the big companies are going into debt more and more each year. Us, as consumers, are eating a ton of antibiotics and stress hormones from those chickens that are being fed those things and treated like that. The chickens have the least amount of rights, if any. They live in crowded, cramped up chicken houses and never get to see the sunlight. The food chickens are being fed antibiotics and live in stress their whole entire lives. As consumers we ingest all of those antibiotics. As for the workers, they have to clean the animals feces and pick up the animals. If the chickens are being fed antibiotics, bacteria will gain a resistance to the antibiotics and it will infect the chickens, workers, and consumers. Humans can get infected by eating meat that is infected with the antibiotic resistant bacteria. Cooking the meat may reduce the amount of bacteria but it may not kill it 100% so there is still a chance that the antibiotic resistant bacteria is still there and if it is still there, there is a chance that it can get inside of you and infect you.

ReplyDeleteAll animals should have the right to be properly fed and taken care of. They should be happy being able to have fun. No animal is to be treated like they are in the “farms” to be slaughtered.
They should be fed food that is all natural and food that the animal can digest. Not cheap indigestive food that has to be pumped out.
When animals are being farmed before being slaughtered they should have some rights. Such as they shouldn't be clumped together, because maybe some of the animals may have a disease that they could spread around to the other animals. Also when animals are being farmed they should be fed normal, natural food, not steroid food with chemicals being put into them. Plus the animals should be able to see sunlight instead of being in a dark, suffocating room.
I think farm animals should be treated like a human being with some respect. Even if they are going to die, they shouldn't live at a farm that's inhumane. All animals should be treated like an animal, not a product. When animals are to be cleaned they shouldn’t be bathed in chemicals that humans can't eat. When animals are bathed they should be bathed in water.
This statement means chickens are nothing even though animals are a big part of what's keeping us from starvation and getting us the nutrition our bodies need. I 100% disagree with this statement because I don’t want to be eating food that’s been dunked in chemicals before I dunk it in my bbq sauce. In my perspective chickens should be raised the way like they used to at a farm, not like how they’re raised now in a so called “farm”.For the “farmers” who raise the chickens now, probably half of them don’t care about othe’rs health, they just care about money.

ReplyDeleteYes, I do have pets at home, my dog does not have the same rights as the people who live with me. My dog can eat when she wants, her bowls are always filled with water and food. She can get on the couch if she would like. She is able to sleep in the beds at night. During the day while we are not home she can go in and out of the house as much as she pleases. My dog can not go to the bathroom anywhere, she must use the doggy pads provided.
All animals should have the right to fresh air, an open space to move, and healthy eating habits.
Yes animals should have certain rights, farm animals should be able to live humane and healthy lives. The animals should be given proper treatment, a wide open area to move around, a clean environment where they are not knee deep in their own feces. The animal should be capable of eating natural foods instead of chemically treated supplements.
I think farm animals should be out running around freely. Being cared for humanely and not just seen as food. The animal is there so that the human population can survive. It’s life is being given up so that the country can eat. In the movie they were in tight spaces, so tight that they couldn’t even move two feet. The animals were knee deep in their own feces. The least these companies can do is make sure that these animals are given a livable environment.
I think Richard is looking it as, this is food not an animal. I do not agree with it. The chicken breathes, sleeps, eats, and uses the bathroom like any living creature. Yes, it is food but it is also a living being. If they look at the chickens that way they might not care for them efficiently. They might just do what they need to and that’s it. Chicken farming is already corrupt as it is I can’t imagine how it’d be if everyone sees them as food.
It’s the companies job to make sure that they are not selling food that is contaminated with a toxic substance. But it is also the governments job as well, they should have more people testing a batch of meat before it gets shipped off to the markets. They should have strict standards about the quality of meat that can be sold. It is our responsibility to stand up and say something is wrong with the food and they need to fix it. If we don’t say anything about it the companies will continue on doing what they do.
As consumers we should know to some extent yes. But there are some things that we do not need to know. .Yes, we do want to know. But I think it’s curiosity that really plays a factor in it. We might not like how it’s made or how it’s raised but in the end it is food and we do need to eat.
When people found out about the “pink slime” in meat they stood up to the companies and picketed. So many people wanted it out of the food that the companies had no choice but reduce or remove the pink slime.
They said that people should be able to see and know what is in their food.

ReplyDeleteAt home I have 2 cats for pets and they live pretty good lives. They have the right to sleep wherever and whenever they want and they always have access to dry cat food, water, and a litter box. They have the right to stay outside as long as they want, come and go as they please, and whether or not to choose to spend the night inside or out. Some ways their rights are limited is they can’t choose when to be fed wet cat food, because that is only at night and in the morning. They also have the right to go in and out of the house but can only go if someone opens the door for them. For the most part though, my cats have almost the same rights as everyone else in the family.
I think that all animals should have the right to -at the very least- sunshine, fresh air, and room to move even if it is limited. The way animals are treated has changed very rapidly over the past hundred years. It used to be chickens could roam the grass freely and they had plenty of room to flap their wings and sleep in peace. Now thousands of chickens are stuffed in dark hot ventilated rooms with no air and no space to move. They are panicked and scared and many can’t even walk. Animals should also have the right to water and some type of healthy food source.
The rights of animals used for food should be animals need to have access to fresh air, water, and healthy food. What we feed the animals affects us because we are going to at some point eat the animal. If a chicken is feed a bunch of chemicals during its life and then we go and kill the chicken for food, we may be eating the chemicals that were feed to the chicken. A farm animal should also have the right to a spacious environment during its life so it can at least be happy before it is slaughtered for food.
I think that farm animals should be treated with respect and be allowed to have happy lives before they die. This idea isn’t shared by the big companies that produce meat because in the film, it explained how it is cheaper for big companies to have all the animals cramped together in a small space and have them eating chemicals to make them bigger faster. And even if the farmer wants to provide a healthy life for their animals, they can’t because they have no control over their own farm. All the power goes to the big company controlling them.
This statement is saying that a chicken is not considered an animal but a product of food. When you look at it that way then yes, it makes logical sense to raise chickens in a way that is cost effective and fast, as to produce as much food as possible in the shortest amount of time. For this to happen, chickens are feed chemicals to make them bigger and are kept in confined spaces so they don’t take up a lot of space, thus making it possible to have multiple chicken houses that each contain multiple thousand chickens each. Its kinda a sick and twisted way of looking at the way food is produced, but I do get why some companies raise chickens this way.
I think it should be an equal responsibility of the big company and the farmer to make sure the animals we eat are given a certain quality of life before they are killed. The big companies should have certain policies that animals should be treated a certain way and then it is the farmer’s responsibility to carry out these policies because they are the ones personally running the farm. The big company can make rules but it is not always going to be right there checking in on every farm it controls every single day. So it is the farmer’s job to take care of the animals in making sure they carry out happy lives before they are used for food. The government I think has enough to worry about so if the big companies are being lawful, then the government shouldn’t need to be involved. The consumers have power! So we should use it and be aware of how companies are treating the food we eat and speak up when something isn’t right.
Thomas M, EDA #1, Pelfrey Part 2
ReplyDeleteIf it was our choice whether we wanted the animal to be treated fairly and then die for food, not very many people would not protest because maybe there life style is to eat fast food four time a day, 2 or 3, but besides that, the companies that produce this animals will not stop because all they care about is money. The farmers and companies are really the only ones that get to choose how our animals are cared for and how our food is processed. The farmers breed and grow the animals and companies kill, process, and ship the food. We can only choose what and how we eat, the government can protest against the farmers and companies, and companies will not stop to produce food.
Why can’t animals have the right to live? They are just like us, a little bit. If we want things to change with our food and animal, we could fight back and say our word and say something to them, stand up, take a stand, but the companies will and might sue because they do not like to be like the bad guys.
We do, but they would not tell us. To me, chickens have it the worst. They are locked in a dark kennel for days and they are grow a “special” way, so they grow fast in only 48 days. They bodies are too heavy and they’re legs cannot carry them. They will die after a while because of their body mass. They are shipped in the night so they cannot see! They are kicked and shoved as they are being shipped. I do not think that we would want to do all of that and see it with our eyes because it will be in humanmain to see or watch.
Just like food, people want everything in the world when in reality, we cannot. People want this and that for a little price. Everything has a price and you have to pay. People want lower gas prices to save money, low plane ticket prices so people can go exotic places for little money, and cheaper healthy foods. These companies will not lower their price because it is all about money and people to buy there product.
I forgot but I am guessing they had very good points about our rights. I know for a fact that the food animals are nowhere near treated like us. Those animals are unhealthy and they are tortured and hurt.
The individuals who contribute and help the farmers are a little bit involved because they are just sent there from there companies. The farmers on the other hand are in debt because of the companies they work for. The connection between them are that they will only work for them and ship to them. The players that are the most valued are the companies, they are the only one getting the money. Chickens and other animals have no rights but the companies have many right and so do we.
Natalia, G. EDA Period 1, Pelfery (Part 2)
ReplyDeleteIf we are in agreement that it does not matter how animals we eat are treated then we should prepare of complete industrialization of the farm. There will be no more rolling hills with cows grazing upon them, or chickens happily pecking at seeds among the grass, but big grey buildings made of concrete where pigs are packed in rows with no room to turn around and chickens stuffed by the thousands in dark ventilated buildings where sunlight is never let in. We should also be prepared for the animals to be pumped full of chemicals that un-naturally are making them bigger and fatter quicker.
As consumers, some people probably prefer not to know where and how their food is raised because it raises the question, “Do I really want to pay more for chicken that is raised right?” or “Am I really going to stop eating McDonald’s chicken nuggets because the chicken it was made from had a terrible life?” I think we as consumers should have the right to know how our food is being raised because it can be a reflection of how much power is granted to big companies and how little power american farmers have. People should know, but sometimes it is easier for people to stay blind to what is happening because it is easier and they are less obligated to have to do something about it.
The tobacco companies have been under a lot of scrutiny over the past couple of years because more people are being educated about the dangers of tobacco and secondhand smoke. Therefore, the tobacco companies came out with the new e-cigarette that produces no smoke and still allows you to get your nicotine craving filled. Also when people started being more health conscious about the amount of calories in their soda, the soda companies all came out with little to no calorie soda drinks to meet the desire of the consumers.
This film brought up people’s rights in a way that the big meat processing companies hire undocumented workers because they are cheap labor and they won’t complain about how they are treated because they are in the US illegally anyway.Big companies know this and want to keep how they are treating the animals a secret from the consumers because most people would not be okay with how the animals are being treated. So they give the jobs of handling the chickens to undocumented workers because they won’t speak up about the animals rights, because they don’t even have rights themselves.
The farmers have little rights compared to the big companies controlling them. The farmers have to do everything the big company says or they will lose their contract and be in great debt. You would think the farmers are more valued because they are the ones actually taking care of and raising the animals but actually the big companies are more valued because they have all the money and all the power.
If this is the way we treat chickens, how are the other animals we eat treated? Chickens are small and they are packed into small spaces with little air and room so what about cows and pigs? Do they live in cramped buildings as well? What food are they eating that makes them bigger and meater faster and do they try to cramp cows into the same amount of space they have chickens?
Roan M EDA period 1 Ms. Pelfrey
ReplyDeleteAnimals do not have the same rights as people, whether it is at your house or at a farm, but on the other hand, animals deserve a satisfactory way of life. I am not saying animals deserve their own Bill of Rights but they can not be treated as we do in factories. We already have laws preventing people from abusing animals such as dogs and cats, and i don’t see how animals can be fed antibiotics, walk around in their own feces, and be genetically altered to the point where they cannot even stand, and that not be considered abuse. We cannot keep feeding these animals antibodies making them so big their own legs cannot even support them. That is unnatural and inhuman.
I think all animals do have a right to a certain way of life, and i think that being treated as just a piece of food then getting sent to a factory to be slaughtered by the thousands is not in any way a satisfactory way of living. Whether or not the animal is used for food, work, or anything in between the animal should not be treated horribly.
I think farm animals should be treated just as we treat any other animal. They deserve a satisfactory life without being forced to eat corn, walk around in their own fecal matter all day and then get shipped off to a factory to be slaughtered.
This means that these chickens are not animals, they are just food. I disagree with this statement because chickens are living, and breathing animals, that feel pain and every other emotion. This perspective of “chickens are just food” would change the way chickens are raised in a drastic way. Farmers and factory workers would no longer have to care about how the chickens are raised and treated.
I think it is our responsibility and the governments responsibility. It is our responsibility because we need to take action and stop eating these foods. It is also the governments responsibility because they need to pass laws and monitor these foods that are all across america. As consumers we need to take action to what we think is right, and stop these huge companies from producing such a large amount of meat in all these sick ways. The companies responsibility is to feed their consumers healthy food, but they are not doing that. They are pumping hormones into their animals and we are eating it. The companies are only want money, they are not concerned about the well-being of the consumer.
Roan M.EDA Period 1 Ms. Pelfrey Part 2
ReplyDeleteYes, I do believe we should have the right to know how are chickens are raised especially if the are being raised with hormones and antibiotics to make them grow so much that they can’t even walk. If they are being fed all these things and we are eating them that means we are taking in all these hormones and antibodies which can be very harmful. I can not speak for everyone but I can honestly say I want to know how the chickens i am eating are raised and what is in the chickens.
A parallel situation would be when people thought global warming was happening, the industry made more green cars, ways to power your house (solar panels), etc.
The video brought up that people that people have the right to know what is in their food, because it is our body and we get to decide what goes in it. The video also talks about how our food is made. We have the right to know if their are antibiotics, or hormones in our chicken. Whether it is good or bad we get to decide what we eat. Not the industry.
The players involved in the food industries are the big companies, the farmers, and the consumers. The most valued player in the food industry is obviously the consumer, without the consumer the whole food industry would fall apart. That is why the food industry does not want the public to know what is in their food. So they can keep making money from us buying their food. The second most valued players are the big companies, such as Tyson, these food industries have control over what they say, and show to the public. The least valued player I think are the farmers. The industry has the farmers pinned financially and just uses them as a source of product.
The topics and issues that emerged from our discussion were “the disconnection of food, and animals,” and “what rights do animals have?.”

ReplyDelete’ I have 4 at home. My pets sort of have the same rights but not quite, because they really don't have a say in what they eat because they don't talk. My pets have the right to go outside whenever they'd like they can eat whenever they want if someones home to feed them but when we're not we set out food for them. i think there limited when they can't choose what they eat or like when they want to go for a walk but when there hyper i take them on a run to the beach and back so they sort of have the when to go exercising.
’ Yes, the right to not be abused and fed things that they're supposed to be fed and have freedom to roam around the backyard or front yard or on a farm wherever you live they should not be stuffed up together like there like a packing container.
Yes I do, they should raise them with rights not like you're trying to see which farmer can make the most cows fall over by feeding them or lets see who can kill the most chickens because the can't walk to get food or lets see how much chemicals we can put on are pigs to clean them. Yes, they should have the right to grow and get big normally and be able to go in a field an roam around freely and eat grass not corn.
’Animals should be treated with respect and kindness like you would treat your own family not be treated like trash you find on the street that you just kick around. They compare nothing like the video in the video they feed them soo much the animals can't even stand up and they treat all their animals like trash like there just raising them to make money.
I believe that statement is trying to say why do you even care why there being raised this way there just being raised for food so thats what i think that statement means. I disagree with that because there still animals they still need to be treated with respect freedom and kindness. It would mean not shooting them up with so much hormones and not feeding them as much to where they can't walk thats how.
’ The responsibility would be on the farmers and the governments hands because they're the ones calling all the shots and who grows what and what type of food they feed their animals. The responsibility to know what they're eating and what they're feeding their families and where it comes from and how its made. The government has the responsibility to know how they raise them and how they are slaughtered in their own feces and how they're sanitized.
’I think that more people would get sick from e coli and more people would die and the companies would gain just way to power and possibly over power any type of power the government has over them.
’ Yes we do, but I'm not sure if people want to know what and how they raise them because it might disgust them and make them sick to their stomachs because they treat them like crap they don't give them any rom to live they have them falling over because they can't hold themselves up and they have them sleeping and sometimes dying in their own feces.

It really just talked about one human right which was we should know how they raise the animals before slaughtering them. Which we should but we should also know how they clean them and if they check the animals for e coli before sending them off to be eaten by us.

ReplyDelete- I have a lot of pets, with three dogs, two snakes, and one iguana they have certain rights like my dogs have the freedom to go wherever they please but they cannot go outside of the gate, but animals like my iguana and two snakes cannot leave their cages. They all get fed three times a day, but at my families decision. (Except snakes they hibernate most of the time) My dogs get most of the rights, but even then they have very little rights.
- There is a lot of rights animals should have like the right to always have food, and always have a shelter, these big time companies are not putting animals in shelters putting them in like a concentration camps they go and stand in their own waste all day and just wait to be slaughter. They don’t get a variety of food neither, they get corn. They don’t have rights, their slaves to these big time companies.
-There is a lot of rights that chickens or pigs should have like actually being sanitary nothing should have to stand in their own waste all day and then be slaughtered. They also should be allowed to eat what they were made to eat, which was grass. Nothing should only eat one thing all day everyday for their own life. I know its easy to get large quantities of, but put yourself in the animals shoes. Being knee deep in your own manure and only being allowed to eat one thing for your whole life until one night you are taken away to somewhere you don’t know where you are going. I couldn’t live like that, could you?
- Animals are made to be raised on the farm (an actual farm) have nothing put into their food to make them grow larger faster, and when they hit the point, they get slaughtered. (unless they have a talent, Scarlet Web) This is the ideal animal farmer, but thats not what we are seeing sure there is one farm that we saw in the video (Food Inc). I believe animals should be treated with respect because their on this adventure of life as well why do we have to make their trip a bad one.
- What Richard Lobb is saying is that we raise these chickens to be food not pets so why should they get these qualities if there just made to die. I find this a reasonable argument against this food chysis. I believe that this is true, even though i do not like what the are doing to these animals, they are not pets there food. Why are people saying these animals deserve these rights if the are just going to be slaughtered anyway?
Jake White. EDA 3 Pelfrey Part 2
ReplyDelete- I believe its the companies responsibility to oversee the treatment, because they bought the chicken they should now what is happening at all times, but these companies are the ones making this crisis so should we really believe that they are going to care what this farmer does to the chicken or how they are treated? Really its up to the company to chose what to do with the chicken.
- If chicken, pigs, or cows have certain qualities then we are going to see not as much meat as we would normally because without that shot that they give the animals they would never be able to grow to the same size as we are used to. With the demand of chicken or beef we can not really stop this we are demanding more and more so the companies have to get more from the cow or chicken in order to fulfill our needs.
- I believe we should, but i also believe people wouldn’t believe it. All the consumer sees is food and i think that people now wouldn’t care how the are raised. All they care about is how to i fulfill this need for food. There might be a little bit of people who stop eating but most people don’t care. I didn’t care until i started this project.
- In any war we need soldiers so we made a draft, you didn’t want to fight you were put in jail. Thats at least what my grandpa told me. This idea of getting more and more and more is just showing how greedy people really are now a days. I can see now how some people are not blaming the company, because the people made them to this.
- I believe i remember them saying people have the right of choice. They could get a 4.50c pound of ground beef and make a burger, but instead the people insist on going to Mc. Donalds and buying a Double Quarter Pounder w/ Cheese.
- Obviously the most valued player in this whole trip is the consumer because without the consumers there would be no company, no farmers, nothing. The one with the least rights is obviously the chicken all its life decisions are based on what the farmer wants, what the company want, what the consumer wants? Its never what does the chicken want?
- The main two that came up has to be what rights should/does the chicken have, and what does the big time companies (Tyson) do to have this much power over everything we do from eating healthier or eating unhealthy. What we came up with was that the chicken does not have any rights only thing it has is a chance to live. The answer to the other question was that they make it so cheap that people would rather buy cheap unhealthy for rather than a little bit more expensive and healthy. The fact that they people like Tyson owns so much of the chicken farming population might have to do with it just a little.

i use to have a dog, he did not have the same rights as we do in our house, he had to sleep outside in his little house we had to bath him outside, but he was able to play outside and do what he wants outside, my dog had to eat twice a day and he had to eat dog food, sometimes we would give him the leftovers, but only if he was being a good dog. i would feed him in the morning and in the afternoon and at night we would give him some milk. also i would walk him three time a day in the morning after noon and night time.
i think all animals should be treated with care and mostly pets, cows, pigs, chickens, etc.
i think the animals should have rights because they should live there last moment happy, also i've heard that if an animal is tense when they kill it and then a person eats it it can affect the consumer.
i think the farm animals should be treated good at least in its last hours of live, my ideas are very diff from the film in the film they mistreated the animals and did not feed them very well.
what richard lobb is saying is that they are not treating the chickens as animals, they are treating them as food so that means that they don't care what the animal feel they treat them as if they were an object or something else, i think that, that i s true they are producing food not chickens because they are not even treating them as animals.
i think that the companies should not have many rights because they are too full of power and they are manipulating the farmers into growing food that is not very healthy.
as consumer i would like to know where my chicken comes from and how it is being raised, because i need to be conscious of what i eat, because what if the chicken is going through a process that could probably harm me in any way, so i would not like to get sick.
when the customer wanted lower prices in a store they got what they wanted but if the customers ask if they can know what's in the food they eat the companies wont tell them and i think thats not fair because the clothes aren't as important as your health, so thats why the customers should know what and where there food comes from.
in film they talked about the workers and consumers and their rights, well the workers don't have many rights because most workers are immigrants and if they try to say anything they can get sued and immigrated back. the consumers need to have right but in the film “they don't have rights” but i think consumers should know where and what their food comes from because, i think everybody should be able to eat healthy and not “healthy”.
in the video it showed that the people working for those companies are immigrants so they say they have no right to speak up, but i think they should have the right to speak up because they are human beings they have a life too and family they need to feed.
i think the workers have most of the rights because they work hard to make money for their family, in the film the companies are more valued but i don't think that they should be valued so much because they are the one processing this food and making the customers sick.
if people (consumers) know where their food comes from why won't they do anything to stop it?
Every since the begining of civilization Man has always been paired with loyal domestic creatures. today those creatures have names, listen to us, play with us, fight beside us, and are treated like family. But ask yourselves do you really care for the pet you love. Now i am not stating that everyone in this room hates their dog or cat or turtle or whatever. What i am saying is do you give your pets the rights they deserve.every year thousands of home owners, exotic park staff, even men like us would treat our pets with caution, violence, even abandening them if they pose a threat to us.
ReplyDeletesome would prefer the underground for animals that are not suspose to be domesticated.
in 2009 a man named herman linal shaw, resident of miami, Florida, was killed at 2:30 in the afternoon by his reticulating python, monty. as some of you may know reticulating pythons are extremely dangerous when fully grown, monty was recorded to be more than four and half feet long and 129 pounds that is what you would call a murder waiting to happen. Reticulating pythons are found naturally in the dense forest of Peru in South America.
But as of late people have been purchasing them from a traveling reptile company known as the underground. And they do not just sell reptiles a recent incident came from the borders of canda in the mountain/ forest is the town of Abboriot. there local gerald freddrick jones was attack by what he claimed was a west african antilope. “it was the oddest thing.. the antilope was sleepin’ behind my truck and … and i heard a loud smash in the window so i told my wife and my son to wait in the house” And just as i approached the truck the.. the antilope doin’ bounced off my truck and sent me tumbling down to the beach by the time i regained conscience the doe was badly injured it’s shoulder was cracked and it got a metal rod stuck in the leg” So i called animal control and they called the wildlife animal reserve in Glendale, Wisconson.”
in this case when that call reached my department, we immediately responded to this incident. apparently the owner of the antilope was trying to feed it when he took out a rod which was used to keep the antilope from running, but in reality the owner abused the antilope with the rod which promoted the animal to run straight for the door which wasn’t shut very well. This incident is a perfect example why pet owners should give their pets respect and love they deserve.

ReplyDeleteMy fellow cheif advisers, of state health care, and secreatarys of state. As you may be well aware their have been reports coming all over the united states about issue towards fast food industry’s and their food containing high levels of toxic hormones in their meat. the cause of this isn’t the parasite known as e coli, no it is coming from the animal itself. since 1966 when mcdonalds started the usage of factories for food packing and distributing, Animals had to grow faster to keep up with the demand of the market and not just major corporations like Mcdonalds normal store brand company’s like tyson have been using corn to feed the same animals we eat and to make it worse they have to say in constant slaughter houses and grow up in their own waste and grow. and once their body’s can no longer keep up with their growing weight the people in charge of the slaughter houses. i say that all animals that are marked for the market should have a tranquil and stress-free enviroment to grow up in and should be fed the appropriate diet they need.
(noted there maybe some missing words in sentences)
Deletealexw.#3pelfrey part 3
ReplyDeleteThe animals at which we eat are animals that are also apart of a life of wide open range. this also includes pigs and chickens. Research shows that one of the main courses of farm animal that is regularly eaten is pig and chickens, and just like cows they are confind and are under alot of stress which gives off terrible hormones which linger after being slaughtered. today thousands of animal are living in constant fear and stress of being scrambled and killed. The reason for this cause is the limited space at which they are given for some this is a holding area for others they grow up in these sorts of enviroments treated as nothing more than meat, but like pets,Farmers originally treated their animals with kindness and care. the rights at which should be placed is completely the opinon of the people and what is right for the farmers and the innocent people involved with the major corporations.
alexw.#3pelfrey part 4
ReplyDeletei belive farm animals should be treated with respect and kindness instead of stress and a diet which is unhealthy and wrong. the way i see it is the major corporations have its workers herd the cow and pigs into cramped spaces not caring about the droppings of the animal or the way the animal tends to feel after being fed nothing but corn for the next month or so which leads to a horrible time consuming execution of the poor creature. now if the animal was fed properly and treated better by the time it had to be slaughtered it wouldn’t have a build up of stress hormones. i think would pretty obivious which is the better option.
alexw.#3pelfrey part 5
ReplyDeletei agree with richard Lobb in his comment about chickens not being seen as animals. In this type of light chickens are not treated as an animal but more like another purchase for a customer. completely ignoring the principals of nature, fast food corporations like mcdonalds have abused and pushed their poultry to the limit.
for in this type of sense, people are purchasing what was fed, beaten, and washed with chemicals creating fear among certain individual families. corporate owners will do anything to make sure the consumer is satified and in the dark so they can keep their business

A: I currently have no pets at home since our landlord won’t allow it, but I did have pets before that are currently living at my grandparents residence
A: They should be able to live happily and healthfully in a nice living environment where they can eat normal food and can at least walk around and not bump into any other animals or step in other animals or their own feces
A: Yes, all rights for animals should apply for them even if we raise them for food.
They should have the right to a clean, and open living quarters that they can at least run around in without stepping into any feces or dead animals. They should be allowed to be out and about, breathe breathable air and to be fed normal feed that hasn’t been modified to make them bigger or anything that isn’t in their genetic code.
A: They should be treated with kindness, hospitality, and respect. My ideas were nothing compared to what I say in that film. The animals were treated terribly, and inhumanely. My idea was a nice and open environment with the food the animals needed, great shelter, and for them to be treated like animals with a heart and soul like ours, but in the film they were treated with terrible things that included and are not limited too:
Small living environments
Barely breathable air
Force(Tasering the cows, throwing the chickens, throwing the dead ones into a pile and burying them)
Aggression
No respect(They subject them to small living environments, feed them the wrong food to get them fat, let them wallow in their own feces and even not being able to walk for a few steps before falling down, because of how obese they are)
A: The statement means that we are not treating them with what they really are(animals with hearts and souls) and what we are treating them as is food that we eat without even considering where it came from, how it was treated before it was packaged and processed and sent, and what was done to it before it was actually made into food. I do agree with it alright, the way they are treating them is such terrifying and disgusting that I couldn’t even find words for it when I first saw it. The company’s are treating them like products and that’s not right. It might be a product, but it’s an animal who gave it’s life to feed us and we are treating it like it was the devil(inhumanely).

A: We should all be responsibility for how they are treated since we all eat it
! If we eat something we should be responsibly for it and it might sound a bit unorthodox, but it’s true. Like I said, they have the responsibility to know how their food was treated, what was done to it, and at least have a basic grasp about how terribly the food they are eating was kept and raised. The government should inform others about what’s going on in those factories, and the companies should too! You are treating them like products that you can manufacture at a price, but in truth they are living things. A living thing should have rights and should be kept as well as a human would be. There’s not a lot of difference in animals and humans since we are the same thing. The animals are all living and so are we! What gives the companies the right to treat them like they aren’t humans? Yes, we are different in a lot of ways, but we breath the same air, live the same way and all in all, they deserve the same rights
A: We don’t have to worry about what happens to them, or how they are suppose to be treated. We won’t know anything about them, how they lived, what they knew, what happened to them! They are being born for slaughter and not to live.
A: Yes, absolutely, but it might shock and disgust us completely about how they are raised and kept, but it shouldn’t really if the companies have any number of respect to give to anyone or anything. and yes, we want to know, because it’s disgusting, inhuman to even know or even believe that this is happening in the world. It’s foolish that they kept us in the dark for so long and if they don’t tell us, and we find out on our own, they will go out of business, people will riot and protest, and it will all boil down to uprisings and disgustment in this country
A: I do not know since this question is very unclear and confusing.
A: I do not know or remember or if it was presented in a nice and very noticeable way.
I have 10 pets, five at my house, and five at our studio, six birds, three dogs, and one Chinchilla. My pet’s kind of have the same right as us, they can talk to us, play there own games, and pretty much do whatever they want, but we do kennel the dogs when they do something bad, almost like grounding someone. My dogs have many rights like, being able to eat when they want, all we do is leave their food bowl out so whenever they get hungry they can go over and eat. They also can go to the restroom when they want to, we have this little patch of grass outside on our porch so the dogs can walk in and out to use the restroom. They are allowed on the couch and after we are done eating they can have some of the table scraps. Some ways that their rights are limited are that they can not go up stairs because when they do they make a mess. They also are not allowed around the table while we are eating because they beg to much. Now for the birds they are out all the time one their perches. They also can eat whenever they want. They Chinchilla we don't have to worry about because she just stays in her cage and plays around with her little toys.
ReplyDeleteYes there are MANY rights that animals should have. They should be able to roam around freely and should be able to go wherever they please as long as it’s inside of your property. They should also be able to choose when they want to eat or where they want to use the restroom.I believe all animals should have most of the rights we do because without them we would have to pull our own plows, carry our own heavy stuff when animal assistance is needed, and many more things that animal’s do to help our environment or ways of living.
Yes every animal, farm, wild, and household, deserve the same rights. As I said before animals in general deserve to go where they please, eat when they want, and use the restroom where and when they want. Farm animals deserve to be treated with care and not just throwing them in a little den and feeding them this stuff that makes them fat to the point where they aren’t able to walk anymore. Also let nature take its own course when hens are ready to lay eggs let them instead of forcing them. They also deserve to die an easy and painless death.
As I said in the above they deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. My idea’s differ from the video because most of the people on the video say animals are animals, and others look at them as food not animals.
This statement means that chickens are food and thats all they are, they are only here on this earth for food. I disagree with this statement because, chickens, yes were made for food but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a happy life or respect. This statement affects the way chickens are raised because of farmers think that chickens are food then they’ll treat them like dirt and make them bigger so the buyers get more meat and food, and the sellers get more money.
The farmers have the responsibility to take care of our chickens to make sure that they are healthy so we are capable to eat them. We have the responsibility to check were the chicken is made so we don't get ourselves sick. They need to make sure that the chickens that they are buying are safe and healthy.
’
’ Yes, we do have the right to know how our chickens are being raised. If we go to the supermarket and buy chicken, how would we know it is safe because if we don’t know how it is raised then how would we know if it is be infected with e coli or not. Do we want to know? maybe not, but should we know? Definitely.
They didn’t bring up really anything about peoples rights in the film. they did bring up that people do have the right to know how there food is raised or how it is produced. Some people say that we don't need to know how it is raised others say we do.

ReplyDeleteOne thing that the consumers wanted faster and cheaper is the internet. When the internet first came out it was probably really slow, now they have it super fast, so fast that when you type in something there will be links to the first letters you type in. Another thing that consumers wanted that they made faster was shipping items to different places because a year ago it would take at least a month to ship something but now they can ship in almost a couple of days.
The film brought up that people don’t really have rights when it comes to who sells the food, processes it, and who it all comes from. All that the people can do is buy the items that the sellers sell on the shelves of each and every store.
The winners of the connections between the individuals is the companies because they get the most profit out of everyone and they don't have to work very hard at selling it because thats what the stores and farmers do. The loser in this situation is the chickens and consumers because the chickens are being treated very badly, they don’t live very long, and are being slaughtered. The consumers are the losers also because they have no say in what the farmers do to their food and they are definitely not benefiting from the chickens that they eat because it kills us and makes us obese.
One question that I would like to ask is why don’t the companies care for their consumers health? Are they going crazy about making money? Don’t they want to make our planet a better place and a nutritional place to be. I’m sure that it doesn’t take a lot of energy to grow grass and let the animals eat what they are made to eat then use them for our food. If they’re are saying that it’s not possible then what about creating the Ipad and even the computer. These are very advanced devices that are used every day. Is there a way that we can make grass faster and self-sufficient?

ReplyDeleteI have a lot of pets at home. My pets don’t get the same rights as us no, but they do have a lot. They are allowed to roam through the house and the yard. They’re allowed on mostly everything and have their own beds, and the dogs are allowed to run without a leash when we take them out to the beach, park, etc. We control when the pets are fed, and the dogs are kept in a barrier around the property. They mostly only get exercise when we can find the time to do it.
Animals should have some rights, like the right to roam in a good amount of space, owners who can afford to feed them and care for them, animals should always be given the chance to exercise and live healthy.
Animals raised for food are looked at as product and not what they really are. In my opinion yes, they should be given rights. For example pigs should be given more space to even turn around, and not put through such a hard process like in the clip shown in Food Inc. Another example is something like chickens being outside and not all cluttered together indoors.
They should be treated with at least a bit of care, nothing crazy but when you're dealing with something so fragile like baby chicks, they should be handled carefully. In the film, a hidden camera showed workers at a farm loading up trucks full of chickens, the chickens were thrown and kicked around, the workers didn’t really have any care for the chickens at all.
The statement basically means the chicken is in a state where it isn't even looked at as an animals, but as product and its life doesn’t really matter, it’s only useful for the company to sell it. When this perspective is given, workers probably look at it the same way and treat the chickens with pretty much no care or respect.
Whoever is buying the food (companies) should have watch over their animals, they have the money, and they need to make the change. Consumers should support the idea and might even have to donate to companies that need the extra money to give the animals a better quality life. The government should enforce this and even go as far as using tax money to help companies provide animals with a better life.
Fights for animal right would continue and some companies would be attacked by this, the food could be at a lower quality as well, when an animals is kept in a healthy environment chances are the meat will be better. But when there are no rights the animals will probably be in a lot less healthier surroundings.
Lukas T. EDA Period 5, Ms. Pelfrey, Part 2
ReplyDeleteConsumers should be able to know just about everything about what they’re eating. Consumers pay for this food, so they should have the right to know how their food grew up or what kind of life they went through before ending up in the store. Some people want to avoid the truth because they can’t bear it.
The U.S. buys just about everything in China. China offers a cheap and easy market, even if the quality isn’t the best. It looks a bit sad that we rely on another Country to supply products for us.
The freedom to criticize a company for selling tainted or bad food products. The film showed this through a mother who lost her child to a fast food meal from a meat supplying company. She had no right to mention their name when talking about the tainted meat, which showed strict laws that involved food companies.
Consumers want fast and cheap food, companies respond to that by finding the fastest way to make food without and thought of the animal, and the farmer is given the guideline and is told to to do it with the company constantly breathing down their necks. The companies are the ones that get the big money and are always growing from their changes. The bottom end would have to be the farmers and the animals, whatever the consumers and companies say, goes and the farmers and animals are forced to do as they’re asked.
One big question would be, if consumers were given the option to pay less for poorly raised chicken or pay more for properly raised chicken, what would they choose? If we were in the shoes of the big companies, would we have the same take on animal rights as we do as consumers, or even as farmers who raise animals with rights?

ReplyDeleteI have two dogs at my house. My two dogs do not have the same rights as the people who live with me because we choose what time we feed them, walk them, and when we play with them. The rights that my pets have are being able to stay outside for as long as they want, only because they live outside in an igloo. But besides that they have no rights because they can’t communicate with us. The rights that my dogs should have is when to be able to eat food whenever they want. Our pets rights are limited by them not being able to choose when to eat, at night, mid day, or even in the morning. They also don’t have a right in what they eat, dog food, our food, and they don’t have a right when to get exercise.
Honestly i can’t think of anything because we own them and we provide them with food and if we don’t have enough money to feed our own family, what makes you think that we should feed the dogs. I just thought of one, the right to be able to ask for food when they are hungry.
Only in certain conditions, to have a normal pig life or whatever type of animal it is life. I mean chickens should not be treated so horribly, they are in the dark and in one huge but crowded house, where they poop and sleep on is where they live. That is not right, they were not created to live like this. Farm animals should have close to the same rights as animal pets because they are animals but look and act different, just give the animals the food that they were created to eat, like cows they were meant to eat grass not corn. it doesn’t matter if its cheap its the right thing to do. If we don't give the animals their natural food then it’s going to affect us humans, i mean over 3,000 people die of bad stuff in their food. Like my dad tells me “ The easiest way is to do it the right way”.
I think that farm animals should never even be considered in living the way they are because they are animals that are living, I mean they were not created for just humans to eat and treat them any way we want. I think that they should live in their type of environment, wherever we found them. My ideas are nothing compared to what I saw in the film. What I saw in the film was torture, slaughter, processing food in a horrible way, and treating animals in a way that I thought was never possible.
This statement that Richard Lobb said means all that we are doing to the chickens is making food for us humans and saying that the chickens have no feelings, and no life to live for. I disagree because going back to my theory, why were animals created in the first place? They were created to help make the entire world a better place and yes we do eat the animals but only when we really need to. This perspective affects the way that chickens are raised by treating the chickens like they are just a product in a grocery store and not a living breathing animal.
The person or place that has the responsibility to oversee the treatment of chickens and other food animals is the people who so call breed the animals. The responsibility that the consumers have is to make sure that they know how the animals that they eat is being treated well and not being slaughtered. They need to make sure that they either rebel against the companies or change the way the animals are being treated. They need to make sure that the companies are not being overpowered and can not be stopped.
The repercussions of that position would be people would protest against you saying that you don’t care for animals and that the way you treat other things is the way you treat other people. People do not want that they want to be happy and not put up with cheap food that is killing animals.

ReplyDeleteI have dogs at home. They don’t get the same rights as my family, mostly because they aren’t capable of doing things on there own. We choose what time we feed them, and they can only eat certain foods because my bulldog is very sensitive to some ingredients. They aren’t very energetic, so they don’t go on walks too often; however, they do get to go outside to the yard whenever they like. They can go sit in the sun or come in if its cold or raining because the doggy door remains open at all times. They do have some rights, but they don’t have others, only because they aren’t capable of opening the food container when they are hungry, or the door when they want to come inside the house.
Animals do deserve rights, but they differ from animal to animal. If its a farm animal, it’s not going to need the same rights as a household pet. The chicken doesn’t need to come inside the house whenever it wants, but the pet does. Depending on what the animal will be for, they deserve to have different rights.
One right all animals should have, is to be able to move around freely. Dogs shouldn’t be kept in a cage that’s too small for them all day. They need to be able to move around, stretch, and chase their tails. Likewise, farm animals shouldn’t be stuck in an area so full of other animals that they can’t turn around. Imagine being stuck in room so crowded, and not being able to move in a way, shape, or form. It would probably be one of the most boring, claustrophobic, and frustrating experiences of your life. And these farm animals are forced to do that their whole lives. Consumers, farmers, and animals would all be happier if the animals were free to roam, without staying in their own manure 24/7.
I think farm animals should be treated similarly to pets. Not necessarily going as far as to let them go inside and lay by the couch while you watch TV. However, they should be fed the proper meals for their bodies and maintain an appropriate weight, they should be allowed to roam freely, and they should be able to see the light of the sun and the green of the grass. Yet, that’s not how it worked in Food, Inc. In Food, Inc., the pigs couldn’t turn around, the cows stood ankle deep in manure, and the chickens took one step and collapsed under their body weight. This is almost a representation of how we are around other people. We are descended from animals, so if we’re treated farm animals this horribly, how are we treating ourselves? If we can’t take care of our food supply, how can we possibly take care of a baby, or a domestic pet?

Ashley Q. EDA Period 5 Pelfrey Part 2
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lobb. This is what we are doing, though it should not be that way. Chickens are being raised in a way our food should not be raised. The way these farmers are forced to treat our food is disgusting. This is the stuff we put in our systems every single day, but it’s not good for us. We are swallowing things that should not be in our systems. And not only are the chicken our food, but they are living creatures who feel things too. Maybe not emotionally like we do, but why should that make us better? If we were packed together, with no room to move and so much weight we can’t even stand for a few seconds, it would be pure torture. Well, the chickens feel that, too. The only difference is they can’t voice it. If chickens could communicate with us, they wouldn’t like the way they are being treated, and would want it to stop immediately. It’s luck that we were put at the top of the food chain. We could have been chickens instead of people, and then we would be treated like they are.
The main responsibility of overseeing the treatment of the animals would be the farmers. It’s their animals, so they should have the responsibility of taking care of them. The food companies and the FDA need to take a part in that too. The companies should not be telling the farmers how to house or feed their animals. The FDA is in charge of making sure our food is safe, which includes making sure the animals are treated well because if they aren’t, then how can our food be safe? The government should have a hand in this process as well. They are in charge of most of what we do. They can tell what we can or cannot do, so they should have the power to shut down food companies who are in violation of keeping our food safe. We ourselves, as consumers, should be aware of the issue. If we know what is happening to our food, and don’t have an issue with it, fine. They can buy the bad meat. But if we want to do something about it, we have to DO it. For example, if we stop buying meat from places or brands we know are not safe and do not treat their animals right, they begin to lose money, and unless they want to go out of business, they will have to change something in order to please the people.
Our food would probably increase in price. Since all the food would be coming from farms that raised animals as they should be raised, the food may cost more, and then people will probably buy less so that they can save some money.
I don’t know if people want to know how their chicken is raised, but they should. We have a right to know what’s in our food. I know I would want to know if my chicken is being treated like it’s not a real living creature. Why wouldn’t you want to know what’s in your food? I understand that people might be disgusted knowing what the food they eat has been through, but isn’t it better to know? If you know, you are able to decide whether or not you are willing to eat this food, or if you should spend a few extra cents to buy the organic chicken that you know is raised more or less like it should be.
’
Sometimes the industry does the things that it does because the consumers want certain things. A lot of our products are made in China. China produces so many of the things we have because as consumers, all we do is want, so we need a large supply of those things. These workers are probably not paid very much money, though they work very hard throughout the day. Also, consumers love their fresh fruits and vegetables. So immigrants are usually hired to work in the fields to plant, take care of, and harvest our delicious food, and they aren’t paid very much at all.
Ashley Q. EDA #5 Pelfrey Part 3
ReplyDeletePeople don’t have many rights when it comes to their food. Basically, all they truly have a right to is knowing whatever the label decided to tell them. They never know it they are being given all the information, and the label doesn’t say much about how the animal was raised, unless it’s organic and/or says free-range.
The companies definitely have the most rights. They can’t be shut down by the government. They won’t get in trouble. They essentially make all the rules themselves and everyone is supposed to follow them. The farmers don’t get to raise their animals the way they want, they have to do it how they are told to. The consumers aren’t told much about how the food is made, and they are kind of kept in the dark. The companies are, without a doubt, the most valued, and have the most rights.
There are many things ethically wrong with the way chickens are being raised now. Do we even deserve to have the opportunity to eat these animals? They are living creatures, and if they aren’t treated like that, then we shouldn’t be able to take advantage of them. Why are most people ok with the way the chickens are treated? Do they not know what happens? Or do they just push it out of their minds because it’s cheaper to do that?
Ashley A. EDA #4 Pelfrey Part 1
ReplyDeleteI, personally, feel slightly undecided on this statement. I understand why consumers may be worried about the quality of their food, however, I don’t believe that means companies have to hide that information from them. Consumers pay their hard-earned money to buy that food, and they should have the right to know what they’re paying for. If a consumer is truly worried about the genetic manipulation of their food, then they can use that labeling to know what to buy.
Information about food can help lower or raise fear, depending on the person. People who prefer all-natural, organic food may worry more about genetic labeling. There may also be people with disorders or illnesses who have to watch what they eat. On the other hand, people who are unopposed to the idea of genetic changes made in food may not worry at all.
’
He is against the Farm Bureau, because the Bureau believes in concealing information from the consumer in order to prevent “unnecessary fear in the consumer’s minds” Pollan believes that consumers deserve to know the content of their food, and I agree with Pollan, because consumers spend their hard earned money on their products.
’
In Health, we learned about the damage from cigarettes. We discussed how companies were required by law to have printed warnings on the package. Graphic pictures of the effects of tobacco are printed on the packages. When asked about the new packaging, however, smokers could care less. They would do things like buy a case to store their cigarettes in after throwing away the package. Smokers still smoked despite their knowledge on the damaging effects. I think that the labeling puts fear into people’s mind, but I’m not sure if knowledge of the labeling will cause people to stop buying certain items. When it comes to genetically modified food, I predict that people will not like the modifications, but I think that they will continue to buy these foods because of the lower price and the availability.
Personally, I don’t drink energy drinks, but this warning doesn’t exactly make me want to start. I don’t want the life-ruining side effects for a few hours of energy. Soda is already unhealthy enough, and adding more caffeine can only make it go worse. Soda has a lot of artificial ingredients and coloring, which is bad for your health. I don’t want to drink soda or energy drinks and have the risk of obesity or diabetes looming over me.
I have never noticed “yes-this-food-was-grown-from-a-petri-dish” type of labels, so I can not fully answer this question. I’m not sure how effective labels are in informing a customer, because I was not aware that such labels exist. Looking back at the cigarette package example, I’m guessing that consumers, especially low income families, will continue to buy unhealthy foods because of the cheaper prices. Major companies will probably still continue to alter our food because of the cheaper cost and the faster process. I think that informational advertisements on the TV and radio may help this issue a little bit. I’m not sure if we can convince the consumer’s minds to make any drastic decisions, so I think that it’s up to the government to fix our food industry. If the FDA was a bit more strict in their inspections, then our food would be different.
Ashley A. EDA #4 Pelfrey Part 2
ReplyDeleteI think her freedom of speech was violated. This is America. Our first amendment clearly states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” This means that the Government has no right or power to control speech. This is why Oprah’s case is so important, because it is not right for Monsanto to sue her for her criticism.
I think that she shouldn't have to hide her voice. She is rightfully fearful of Monsanto and their immense power. With ex-Monsanto employees in our FDA, Monsanto can win anything if they really tried. I believe that this is a violation of the first amendment as well as it was in Oprah’s case.
Some pros would be that they would have an extensive knowledge of what happens to our food. They would probably know what is safe and unsafe for people to consume. The cons, however, are too significant to ignore. Some cons would be that these employees can win court cases in favor of companies like Monsanto, because they have close connections who they can influence.
I think that the government has a significant role, because we elected them. They are there to make laws and protect our country, because we appointed them to. So, yes, I believe that the government has the right to create laws about food safety, however, I’m worried that they are not taking adequate action because of the ties to those food companies. Also, food is a largely profitable business, which is something the government may not want to interfere with.

ReplyDeleteI think animals do have a right to a certain quality of life. No I don’t think they need to have all the same rights as us(What would a cow do in a classroom?), but I do think that they deserve some rights. They shouldn’t have to stand in piles of their own waste, or be stuck in small crowded areas. They should die of natural causes not from their environment. People should also be mindful of what they’re eating. People should try to buy food that they know has been properly taken care of. It may be more expensive but if everyone started doing it the cost would go down
I myself have a dog and I know he most definitely does not have the same rights as me. I can feed myself whenever I get hungry and I can leave the house whenever I want. My dog on the other hand gets fed at a certain time and only leaves the house when we take him out. My dog does have some rights though, he has the right to be fed, washed, exercised, and loved.
All animals should have the right to a safe life. They should have a right to good food and a healthy living environment. They should also have the right to a safe environment where they are not abused.
I think all animals raised for slaughter should still have the same rights as any other animal. I think all animals deserve the right to good food and a healthy and safe living environment.I think farm animals should be treated with respect, not at all like they were treated in the film. They should be fed the correct types of food and they shouldn’t have to stand in their own waste.
I agree with the statement “In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” This statement means that we are no longer producing chickens normally. We are now making the chickens bigger and better for eating. Chickens are now being produced solely for money.
The companies should be responsible for the treatment of their own animals. Consumers should also be mindful of what they’re buying. They should try to buy foods that are raised properly and not support companies that treat their animals badly.
If we are in consensus that food animals don’t have the right to a certain quality of life, then consumers may stop supporting companies, that feel the same way. The animals may also get diseases and recalls may occur.
As consumers we have the right to know how our chickens are raised. We may not want to know, and the companies may not want us to know, but we still have the right to know.
Consumers want cheaper products so they have people over seas make it. This makes Americans lose jobs as well as the products not being very high quality.
The film brought up the people’s right to know what is in their food. Sadly most people do not know what is in their food. Everyone should have the right to know that.
Anthony Z, EDA#2 Pelfrey part 1
ReplyDeleteMy dog is very free he has a right to most things in our household. For example he can go on the couch anytime he wants to, he even has his own spot that if you're sitting in it he will just stare at you. He is also allowed to walk anywhere he wants in the house or when we go outside he can go anywhere as long as we have a good idea where he’s at. But one thing he is not allowed to do is wait at the table for scraps sometimes we’ll slip him something but no often. He is most definitely not allowed to use the house as a restroom. He can go eat when we play outside or when he feels like it we’ll just open the door and let him out. He usually just goes and walks outside for some exercise.
’
All animals should have the right to a suitable environment to be able to eat and roam as they please. By roaming I mean to go stretch their legs and get exercise for example they should be able to go outside and walk around and play fetch if they want to. If pets are part of your family they have the right to sleep in your house I mean I wouldn’t want to sleep outside. They probably like the warmth to not to be in the rain chained to a dog house that that can’t walk around in. Another thing would be that animals should eat what they are meant to eat not some other substance just because it is cheaper. You wouldn’t mud just because it is there and free you would want to eat something that doesn't taste like dirt. They shouldn’t be slaughtered mercilessly
These animals that we eventually will eat should still have the right to life they shouldn't have to stand in their own manure. They should be able to roam and be killed in a more human way not just sacked and tossed. But when you care more about saving money and not about the animals then these certain qualities of life go out the window and animals are abused. Why shouldn’t they be charged with animal abuse none of these factories give animals a suitable living environment. They shouldn’t be eating corn they should eat grass like they are supposed to. They shouldn’t be packed together in a coral with no room to move or breathe new air its as if they see these creatures as products not living things.
Well in the film they were showing as I have stated many times bare unsuitable living environments. They believe just because they are going to die they don’t have to worry about what they eat or what they're standing in. But eventually that comes back to affect us with diseases that are deadly and aren’t the best for us. They should have green pastures so that the cows can eat and roam. They shouldn’t be fed corn just because its cheaper because in the end the person who it effects is us the family’s that eat it. Also they shouldn’t be jammed together in a coral that is only big enough for about three cows when they have about fifty. They need to be able to walk and the chickens should roam not be trapped in the dark where they never see light and are whisked away to be slaughtered in the most unbearable way.
This means that they don’t see living creatures they see a dinner plate with money signs which in a way is true. They are just going to be eaten by the consumer but at what cost are they doing this at. chickens don’t exist anymore they are genetically altered so that the can be killed faster. they just producing food for the american people but this food is living and have the right to be treated correctly for the time they spend on this earth. So in a way I am in between with this statement yes we are just producing food but in what ways are we producing food. They cut a few things here and there just to save money they are producing food that can potentially harm us and make us sick.
Anthony Z EDA#2 part2
ReplyDeleteWell I believe that its is the responsibility of the government. The reason being is that we put our trust in these people and thats why we elect them but it seems they are overlooking our food safety do to money problems. We should buy food from organic companies that treat the animals right and not abuse them. Companies should give these animals suitable living environment so that we don’t get sick and neither does the animal because eventually that comes back to us and can harm us. Farmers should protest and refuse to sell or grow anything because without them there company wouldn’t function.
’
We shouldn’t treat these animals with all this great living because they are going to be eaten anyways. They aren’t raising them they are just selling them. If they do put all this time into the product they are wasting money that could go towards figuring out a safer process. They would slow production rates and they wouldn’t produce as much food as they need to. Some consumers may be appalled to what they see so they have the common courtesy not to show it to them. Doesn’t matter how we raise the chicken its going to be eaten either way so we could show the consumer how we make it but it won’t make much of a difference. Animals on these bases are not going to be here forever they are going to be eaten no matter how we prep them.
’
When gas prices were going up car manufacturers produce cars that can go a longer distance with what they had. So its not like companies are the problem they are just meeting the demands of the people. These companies are just trying to sell there product and be successful in what they do. When groceries and gas prices were going up shell and vons said hey why don’t we join forces so that every time you shop at vons yo get twenty percent off gasoline. They respond to our actions because we are what makes or breaks them there products are what we are demanding whether we know it or not.
’
How when these food companies bring people over from foreign countries like mexico they aren’t treated with the respect they should be treated with. So they have no home when they get here and no health insurances if they get sick and they can’t complain because they are an illegal citizens. So in retrospect they are just like the animals they are raising replaceable and unimportant in their eyes they are just animals that come and go. What they are doing is illegal and putting hard working people in bad citations. Having them think that coming here is the best when really they are just setting them up to be replaced eventually.
’
’ The individuals that are raising the chickens are like puppets under the companies control. Anytime farmers are close to get out of debt the companies they are contracted to demand that they must get upgrade for their chicken houses which just barrie's them in debt and thats how they keep control of the farmers by keeping them in this place that they need them or else they are going to be bankrupt. They aren’t any special players in this citation the one the probably need the most is the chicken you see sort of an ongoing theme with these companies how everything at their disposal is just replaceable they don’t need the farmer there are plenty more where the first one came from.
Should farmers have the right to do what they want with their chickens or should companies further control the way the system works. Is right that they can genetically modify our foods without informing the consumer about it first. Shouldn’t we have the right to know how the food on our plate is processed without the fear of being sued in court because we questioned this system. In the end the food system is mainly controlled by us because they are just trying to meet the demands.
I have one dog at my house. We basically have the same rights except for a few differences. I get to chose when and what to eat but he doesn’t, I also get to chose when and how to exercise but again he doesn’t. Animals should have rights, for example dogs should be able walk without a leash if well trained. Farm animals should have some rights as well, like being able to roam around and eat natural grass. Also be slaughtered humanely, also treated with more care. You are what you eat, so if we load the animals with chemicals to kill the bacteria then were ingesting all those chemicals instead of just having the cow or pigs roam free and eat grass like they should be able to do.”In a way. we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” From my understanding this means we’re not breeding and slaughtering chickens for food because we have to. We’re doing it because we can with less care for the environment for the chickens are for the people. This way of mass slaughter chickens for food, have already affected the way they’re raised, like how a chicken can be bigger in 45 days now then back then when it took 70 days. ReplyDeleteWho has the responsibility? I would think the branch in the government that looks over food, maybe even some higher up parts of the government. We are consuming this product and if not given a second look it could be sticking or even lethal. People would want better, healthier food that costs more. So companies raised animals with respect and fed them grass then slaughtered them when they're ready not modify them to be harvested in less than half of the days to fully grow. People have the right to vote against the meals they are given 3 times a day. They can chose to support or deny companies, just by choosing what to eat.

ReplyDeleteI've never had a pet before, but I still have feeling toward them. Animals should have the right to live and be independent like we live. We do have the right to raise animals like pigs and horses, but should not the right to torture, kill, and ruin their lives, just so people can eat them. Instead of super fast slautering, there should be a system, where as soon as a farm animal dies, it should be sent to factories where they can be ready to eat. I'm 100% sure that is possible. Everyone should have the right to know how are food is made because it could be mixed with unknown chemicals or E.Coli. “In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” I think that translates to ," a chicken has no life, they're just like tomatoes, celery, and other vegies."

I have five pets; two dogs and three cats. While they don’t have the same rights as us, their owners (like driving a car or going to school) they get healthcare when needed, they’re fed quality store food, the dogs aren’t in their kennels all day long (usually only about four hours a day, and they sleep in them at night), we pick up their you-know-what, give fresh water, and they can walk around about wherever they want.
All animals should be treated with kindness and respect and live in conditions that don’t harm them or make their life one of suffering. If they fall ill, they have the right to proper care or to be put down humanely and painlessly. They should have food that doesn’t harm them either, like corn does to cows.
They should have living conditions that aren’t directly hazardous to their health, and any supplements or modifications to them if ANY should not affect their lives negatively. If they are livestock, then the way they’re slaughtered should be humane and as painless as possible, especially before they go into the de-furring or de-feathering baths to make sure they are in fact dead.
Farm animals should be able to see sunlight and have standardized living conditions that actually leave them room to move (for instance, the idea that chickens should get their own double-shelved living cubicle with a general lower area and a nest), plus food that doesn't harm them (GRASS, not corn!).
This statement has the implication that the animals being produced as livestock are nothing more than vegetables or an inanimate object as a product, not a living creature. I disagree with this because while we do in fact use chickens and the like for food purposes, they’re still very much alive and very animate and above all able to feel pain. This perspective would affect the way chickens are raised in the respect that they wouldn’t be treated as living beings but as a product to be grown and then monetized upon, thus lowering the quality of life for the chickens.
The government, since it’s job is to govern for its people and therefore have their best interests in mind and should be unbiased in making such decisions since if regulations were being inspected by the companies itself many falsehoods would arise in said inspections.

The quality of the product would become worse with the living conditions. Animals are already living knee-deep in their own feces (literally) and with all the antibiotics and growth hormones being pumped into them, the “product” would become very unsafe.
We do have the right to know what is in our food most definitely, however our knowledge of how the chickens are raised would most likely have to be limited to whether or not the chickens’ treatment is in compliance with FDA standards. If abuse is caught by someone then great, but any in-depth analysis of the quality of life given to the chickens is up to inspectors or the company to make known to the public.
One example I’ve found would be in the cosmetics industry. This extends not just to makeup but also to basic everyday skin-care or hair products like sunscreen. Many of these products (up to 90%!) are not completely evaluated by the FDA and contain many different strange and dangerous products such as bovine placenta, mercury, or even nanoparticles. Many of these ingredients don’t even have to be listed on the labels!
The film brought up the fact that the farmers working for large meat packing companies like Tyson are heavily extorted and exploited by the company in that an average farmer only makes $18k a year not including expenses but is in debt for the feedlot houses which cost upwards of $500k, effectively putting them in lifelong debt to the company. Those same companies also employ illegal immigrants for much of their work, and even the workers in the carving lines have dangerous working conditions and low wages.
In most cases, the farmers of chickens view the animals as they would a crop. Simply something to be managed at a base level to sell later for money. The farmers are definitely more valued, and the chickens have the least rights out of the two by far.
What kind of life are chickens entitled to, if any entitlements at all? If they have no rights, how come? Should they be treated as a product and not a living entity capable of feelings and pain? If they do have rights, what would they be and how would those rights affect productivity and the quality of the products generated?

Having a pet does, in fact, impose responsibility--the fact that my German Shepherd is smart doesn’t disprove this. There is a line that separates the human beings from other animals; perhaps this is a mental quality, or perhaps it is a physical quality.. But human beings are proven to be more capable at coping with the rest of society. For this specific reason, more rights are given to humans than to animals, and i do intend to explain this.
My German Shepherd, Sheena, is regularly treated as royalty amongst the rest of the family. She is fed, exercised, and given social permission on a daily basis. She cannot speak, drive, judge, or expand her knowledge, because of the fact that she is not human. She has a lot of freedom, which includes sleeping, eating, and socializing with who she wants, but she still has many restrictions to her daily life. She cannot leave the house if the house is empty, she cannot bark at other dogs, do harm to other people, “rest” herself wherever she wants to, she cannot choose her own food, she cannot pick out time to exercise, and other subjects which, for the moment, have slipped my memory. In these ways, she is segregated from the rest of the family.
Many people, who are spiritualists, believe that all animals (including humans) should be treated equally, but there is a specific reason of why equality is prevented. This reason is because of the ability to make judgements--humans have certain mental qualities, based on the teachings of civilization, which allow them to form a sense of conscience and public decency ; through this mental process, sensibility is enforced. Because of the fact that animals don’t have these qualities, their rights are slightly different. if they were to have the same rights as people, then there would be havoc. Animals must have certain rights, however, like the right to defend themselves if threatened--this would alleviate abuse towards animals. They should have the right to greater selection in their food, and exercise. All animals, just like human beings, must have restrictions.

ReplyDeleteI have three pets at my house: one dog and two cats. My pets are a very big part of my family, so we believe that our animals have the right to be treated with love and respect. They also have the right to be fed everyday, be given exercise, and be cleaned every now and then. However, our pets’ rights are limited in the fact that they do not choose what they eat, how they are exercised, or when they are cleaned.
I believe that all animals have the right to be provided with proper food, shelter, and overall care. They should also always be treated with respect and love.
I think that the rights of animals should somewhat apply to animals we raise for food. However, I also believe that, if we are raising living things just to kill them, why not do it faster and get more food in the process. If we are going to continue to sustain our population, food must be produced on a large scale. But, if it does become possible to raise animals who will be used for food humanely, while still supporting the people who need the food, I would gladly accept the change.
In the film, the rights of the “farm” animals are completely neglected. If I were in charge of running the factories that produce our meat products, I would want to treat the animals slightly more humanely than they are currently being treated. However, I would still want to produce the meat on a mass scale. Therefore, a balance must be found between treating animals with respect and still producing a large amount of them.
This statement means that, when producing chicken, companies do not treat the chickens like animals. Instead they treat them as food that must be raised and slaughtered in order to feed people. The result of this is complete neglection of the rights that animals should have.
I believe that it is up to the government to make sure all food companies are being responsible of treating their animals with dignity and respect. As compelled as I am to say that it is the food companies responsibility, I realize that these companies only care about money and producing food as cheaply as possible. Therefore, the government must closely watch companies and make sure they treat their livestock the way they should be treated.

ReplyDeleteIf we make food producers comply to the idea that animals have a certain quality of life, the result may be a lack of food to feed our always expanding population. Also, food prices will rise, making it extremely difficult for people in poverty to get the food they need to survive.
’ As consumers, we have the right to know how the chickens we eat are being raised. I think all people who are willing to hear and want to learn how our chickens are being raised, should be told what happens in those chicken factories. However, people who do not want to know and prefer to left in the dark about this information, have every right to do just that.
’ In today’s society, everybody wants to be up the general standard of beauty that has been set. Because of this, many companies created dieting plans in an effort to make a profit off of this desire for beauty. Nowadays, we see advertisements for dieting plans all over: on television, billboards, and posters.
’ In the film, it talked about the workers that are acquired by large meat packing companies are heavily and exploited by the company in that an average farmer only makes $18k a year not including expenses. This puts the farmers effectively in a lifelong debt to the company. The companies also employ illegal immigrants for much of their work, who recieve dangerous working conditions and low wages.
The farmers in charge growing the chickens they raise are completely under the thumb of the companies they are employed by. Therefore, obviously, this makes the companies very powerful. It also takes away an enormous amount of rights from the farmers, so the farmers have the least rights and the companies have the most rights.
I came up with many questions during this chapter of the film. Perhaps the most important being: who should specifically be held responsible for the barbaric treatment of chickens, not to mention other livestock?

ReplyDeleteI have 10 pets, five at my house, and five at our studio, six birds, three dogs, and one Chinchilla.
Yes there are MANY rights that animals should have.

ReplyDeleteDEEPENING QUESTIONS
Based on what i know probably most of us have pets at home i have pets at home myself.i have two dogs.no, my pets probably don't have the same rights as i do at home.come to think of it it is hard to say what rights my pets have at home, because pets don't really have rights.they don't get to choose when they eat or when they get to go outside and run around or even where they get to sleep.
The animals should have the right to be treated with care. And also be able to be fed the right food that that they are supposed to be eating.Such as corn, the cows aren't supposed to be eating corn they are supposed to eating grass.but since corn can be less in price ,farmers choose to feed them corn instead of grass.
Yes,i believe that these rights should go to any animal.i also think that these animals should have some rights.for example, they should be also be treated with care.
i think that farm animals should be treated with care because if they are not they can be sick and dying all the time.they way that it is shown in the film is crucial like it is shown that the truckers throw the poor chickens into the cages.
this statement shows how he thinks about these chickens,he believes they are only food.no,i dont agree with it.in his perspective i can probably see that they might be treated with care.
i think that the company and the farmers that fed these animals are responsible to have a treatment for chickens and other animals.i think that the responsibility that consumer and individuals have is to be aware of what the dangers are or what can happen.
i believe that us as consumers should have the right to know how the chickens we eat are being raised.i believe that we should have the right to know because we pay for that chicken or any food with our own hard working money. Some people may not want to know.the people may not want to know because it can be disgusting and even disturbing to even hear about it.
The industry responded with making the chickens a bigger size by giving the chickens a drug that makes them so big that their own legs can't keep holding them up.So that they are much bigger that the previous years.
The film brought up that people should have the right to know what is in their food because it can become a problem.
The connections between the individuals involved in raising chickens is that the farmers who raise the chickens are giving the chickens a type of drug to make them grow faster than usual company who buys the chickens who are most valued. The farmers and the chickens who have the least rights.
The ethical question that came up in our discussion was “Are the chickens treated fairly?”

ReplyDeleteI've never owned a pet before, but I still have feeling toward them. Pets should have the right to live and be independent like we live. I'm not sure though because I've never owned a pet before except fish.
We do have the right to raise animals like pigs and horses, but should not the right to torture, kill, and ruin their lives, just so people can eat them!!! Instead of super fast slaughtering, there could be a deferent system like when a farm animal dies, it could be sent to factories where it can be ready to eat. I'm 100% sure that is possible. Its slow, but this is just one idea. If that doesn't work, then the way the farmers treat their animals should change to treating animals respectfully and nicely.
Chickens and other farm animals should be treated freely like pets such as dogs, cats, hamsters, parrots, etc., not in overcrowded poop-filled areas.
“In a way, we’re not producing chickens, we’re producing food.” I think that translates to ," a chicken has no life, they're just like tomatoes, celery, and other veggies." I don't agree with Richard Lobob because every animal I have ever seen has feelings and emotions just like humans and should be treated the same way humans are treated, this changes the way chickens are raised.
Everyone in the world should know how the meat we eat is raised, but we shouldn't have to worry about it because we have the FDA. We didn't get to see Tyson's chickens, and many others refused too which proves that we don't get to know how the chickens are made and we found out that the chickens live stuck in the small stuffed barns without sunlight for their entire lives, so something has to be done about this so we can have the right to know what's in our meat.
All I remember the film brought up about people's rights was that they didn't have the right to see inside the chicken houses.
Players like Tyson are the most valued because they produce very fast and genetically modify them to be bigger for better quality.
