Guiding Question Sets (from Food Inc Participant Guide)
- In the film, food science professor Larry Johnson says, “If you go and look on the supermarket shelf, I’ll bet you 90 percent of [the products] would contain either a corn or soybean ingredient. And most of the time, it’ll contain both.” Why might it be a problem that the majority of our food is made mostly from just corn and soybeans—so that nearly everything we eat contains them?
- Many of us were surprised to learn that corn is so prevalent in our foods. Why do you think we were so surprised? Do you think the government and food producers have kept it a secret? Why don’t more people know this fact?
- Food labels actually do list corn-based ingredients, but not always in a recognizable way. How do you feel about ingredients being included in your diet without your knowledge?
- Whose responsibility do you think it is to inform us about what is in our food? Is it our responsibility to find out, the producer’s responsibility to make it more clear, or both? Why do you think so?
- If people are responsible for informing themselves about what is in their food, what would help them be more informed? If producers are responsible, what would be the more effective ways for them to inform people?
- The movie points out that cows and farm-raised fish, which are not biologically suited to eating corn, are now given a modified diet that is based on corn. Do you think people’s diets have been modified in a similar way? How do you feel about the possibility of your food being modified without you being aware of it?

ReplyDeleteThe fact that the majority of our food contains corn or soybeans is a problem because should anything happen to either of those ingredients, such as a shortage, it would cause a very large problem for the consumer and the company. This could also severely inflate the prices of other food items. It is also a problem because the lack of variety is unhealthy for humans. Corn and soybeans alone cannot provide the nutrients required to maintain someone’s health.
I think we were surprised because none of us expected that a single ingredient would be so common in so many things that people eat everyday. I think that the government and food producers have kept this a secret because using corn is very cheap and supports the economy. If everyone knew that all their food contains corn, they would more than likely be very discontent. This would cause problems for the economy and food producers would have to start producing more food, at an increased cost. Many people do not know this because they do not care about what they eat and are not willing to find out.
’
I think it is wrong that food companies put products in food without our knowledge. People should have the right to know what they’re putting into their body. It is also partially peoples fault for not researching the ingredients of food, especially with the number of readily available resources today, such as the internet.
I think that it is the producers responsibility to tell people what is in their food, and actually tell the truth about what is in their food. It is also the people’s responsibility. If people want to know what is in their food, they need to research it for themselves because the producers won’t tell them.
There is a number of consequences for each side of this issue. Many people do not care about what is in their food, so long as it isn’t killing them. If it is the producers responsibility, then the producer must spend more money on labels and nutrition facts for their food, which can cause problems for the economy. If both have responsibility, then people and companies can be lazy and place responsibility on each other.
People need more available resources to know what is in their food. People also need to know about these resources. Producers can create websites to tell people what is in their food and print the web address on the food’s container.
’
I think that people have had the same treatment as cows and fish. People are not supposed to eat as much as corn as they do. The human body needs a variety of nutrients in order to stay healthy. I think it is scary that producers can modify my food without me knowing about. I think it is also a violation of human rights to not tell people what is in their food.

ReplyDeleteThis corn and soybean is limiting the variety on what we are putting into our body. If our body has no variety we will start depending on corn related foods and not have any other food we will want to eat. If these crops somehow become ineffective at producing the corn material we would have no corn after we have been depending on it for years. This would force almost everyone to stop buying this product they have depended on for the past few years. Many businesses would go out of business because they can no longer supply what the customer.
I think many people were surprised to hear how much corn was in their food because a lot of people stopped looking at the nutrition and just ate it because they were hungry at the time. We were all so surprised because we couldn’t taste the corn so the people who didn’t look at the nutrition didn’t know that it was in their product.
I feel that putting corn based ingredients in our food is kind of like what the farmers our doing to the cow. Its giving us less variety but we just don’t know it because there are so many different food labels but the food ingredients are basically all the same. Many customers don’t realize that their food products are all similar in ingredients.
I believe that the company does inform us about our food we just haven’t looked hard enough at all the details about the food we put into our body. Although the producer doesn’t make the products nutrition very clear I think its still our job to look at it if we really want to know what we are eating.
The students might not know what to believe if they are in the middle. They might think that the companies should have to inform them. Then there are the customers who believe they have to inform themselves rather than the company giving out the nutritional information.
I think that it is the customer’s job to look at the nutrition label and compare it to something that they know is healthier. If the customer started observing all the nutritional info on all their foods they would soon be able to find the healthier foods rather than the unhealthy processed foods. If it was the producers fault they should have to do a better job at informing the buyer by labeling the food more honestly.
I think that our food has been modified to be cheaper, taste good and keep us full. This food however is not the healthiest thing for our bodies and is not organic like some other food in the market. I think that the companies could be modifying our food without telling us and I think that it is not right for them to not tell us what they're doing.

It might be dangerous that almost all food products contain corn because without diversity in our diet, we will not get all of the necessary vitamins and minerals. We may also become too dependent on corn and stop production of anything that we can use corn to do. Also, if pests become a problem or if a virus mutates to become compatible with corn, it could drive up the prices of corn, and force us to find replacements for corn. This problem could be monumental. If we become entirely dependent on one product, and then that product becomes riddled with pests, we would have an incredibly short supply of food. Right now, our approach to growing/creating/eating food seems to be reckless and wrong.
I think so many people are surprised to know that corn is in so many foods because it is listed as things such as xanthan gum, not corn product. I do think that food producers have kept it a secret, and that the government has let them do so, because the government has been lobbied by the food companies. The government gives the companies subsidies, then the companies pay the government to keep food regulation laws loose. I feel that the reason so few people know this fact is because they do not care what is in their food, so long as it is cheap and it tastes good. The consumer needs to become more interested in what is being put into their food if they want to eat healthier.
I feel like corn is invading my diet by being in all of these food products, especially since they do not let you know that whatever ingredient is a corn product on the labels. I often feel cheated by corn, as it seems to be masquerading as multiple different things. Some may think that it doesn't matter that corn is in everything, because it is inexpensive. Some may not think it matters because “food is food”. Despite the thoughts and feelings of some, we should always be curious and inquisitive as to what is in our food and why. I would rather pay a little more for better food, than eat what is cheap. It may cost more money, but there are few prices that are too high for the well-being of your body.
The producers are responsible for making the information clear and the consumers are responsible for finding out what is in our food. I think so because if you care about your food, it is your responsible to do whatever in your power to be knowledgeable about the food you are eating. At the same time, the food producers need to inform us more completely about what is in the food they are producing. The producer and consumer are both equally responsible and they should both take equal responsibility for the problems caused by consumers not knowing what is in their food. If more consumers and producers do not take more responsibility soon there could be awful consequences. If the two do not take more consequences, the problem of if people have the right to know what is in their food will not get solved.

ReplyDeletePart 2
People who think that it is the producer’s responsibility are probably in favor of letting companies do what they want, because then the companies could keep the food labels unclear and not have to educate everyone. People who are in favor of producers taking on the responsibility of educating the consumer, probably want to know what is in their food, but do not want to find out the information themselves. They probably feel entitled to know what is in their food. Those who are in the middle, probably feel that producers should be active in educating the consumers, and that the consumers should play an active role in finding out what is in their food. I feel that producers and consumers should share the responsibility and not place blame on the other when some of the blame is theirs.
To find out what is in their food, people can research what the oddly named ingredient actually is when they see it on their food label. Also, food producers may put (product of corn) after an ingredient that was derived from corn. The producers also could make the nutrition facts easier to find on their websites. I feel that if both the consumer and the producer took action with these simple solutions, then nobody would have the need to complain. These things would not be hard to do, but it seems that the majority of consumers and producers are not taking the responsibility they should.
I do think that peoples diets are being modified in a similar way, because there is no way that humans are biologically engineered to ingest the amount of corn that the average american is eating today. If we were meant to eat as much corn as we do now, we would have been this much corn since we as humans figured out how to plant crops. I do not want my food modified, because we have no idea what modified food could do to your body. Producers should be required label genetically modified foods,or genetically modified ingredients as such, so well educated consumers can steer clear of the possible dangers of GMOs.

ReplyDeleteThis is a problem, having our food made from mostly corn and soybean, in society because these two main crops deliver very little nutrients to our diet and can cause health problems because it is just a cheap and affordable way to make things, yet it doesn't mean that it is necessarily healthy for you. We were so surprised because we did not know that with corn you can make so make products out of it and can make so much with it and its byproducts. They have kept it a secret because then the food cannot be traced back to one simple and cheap crop, corn that in most cases it’s by products isn't really healthy for you. Because it is never really said in public what the byproducts of corn are called because if they were known publicly then the public would realize they are just being fed corn and there is no real variety. I feel left out because the way the manufacturers hide the corn-based ingredients is by giving them fancy complicated names that people would not want to look up. It’s like they want to lie to you right in your face without you realizing it is actually happening to you. I think that it is both of our responsibility to inform us what is in our food we buy. They should make the labels clearer and easier to read, and we as the consumers need to take the time to read those labels and figure out the actual crops of animals the food or product came from. The consequences of both the spectrum are that if it is just our [public] responsibility then the companies will keep us hidden in the dark. the other consequence is that if it is just the producer’s responsibility then they still might make it hard to read for the public yet they have all the things listed they still might call the ingredients by weird names that are hard to figure out. Know certain types of byproducts of corn or soybeans that are dangerous to your health and/or know when you see one to know NOT to buy that product. They could call the byproducts of corn by simpler names or have a category in the nutrition label that states how many byproducts of corn are in the product being sold. Yes because we were not meant to eat mostly corn just like how cows are not supposed to eat corn but they do. We are meant to eat a variety of nutrients gathered from multiple sources, yet when you look at the sources we are given corn is the majority of our diet exactly like the cows. So in reality we are exactly like the cows, should be fed corn as most of our diet but that is all we are given, CORN. That can be a scary thing that you are not being informed on what you are putting in your mouth which as i have gone over is a bad thing.

ReplyDeleteIt would be a problem because we would have a less variety of food than we think and if the worlds supply of those two main crops died off the we wouldn't be able to make most of our products. I think that people were so surprised by it because the government may have been keeping it a secret for so long. I think all ingredients should be shown in the labels because we have a right to know what's in our food. I think the responsibility is both the producer’s to make things more clear about what’s in there products and the consumers to look find what's in their food.
Adrian L. EDA #4 Pelfrey
ReplyDeleteI think that it’s a problem because we’re eating the same thing over and over again, we need more of a variety of food and we can’t get a variety since the food producers are trying to hide the ingredients in our food, so we don’t know what it’s made of. Genetically modified food can cause new allergens, antibiotic resistance and many more problems. There are benefits of genetically modified food. Sturdy plants able to withstand weather extremes. Better quality food crops. Higher nutritional yields in crops. Inexpensive and nutritious food, like carrots with more antioxidants. Foods with a greater shelf life, like tomatoes that taste better and last longer. Food with medicinal benefits, such as edible vaccines – for example, bananas with bacterial or rotavirus antigens. Crops resistant to disease and insects and produce that requires less chemical application, such as pesticide and herbicide resistant plants
We were surprised because the food that we normally eat isn’t what we think it is, most of the food we eat are mainly corn and soybeans. Also the fact that food we eat everyday can be genetically modified surprised me. I believe that the government and food producers have kept it a secret from us, and we need to be informed. More people don’t know this fact because the government and food companies are trying to hide it from everyone, because they don’t want their customers to stop buying their food.
I feel that we should know what we are eating. Food companies think that knowing there’s genetically modified food in their products will scare us, but they say it’s completely safe, so there would be no need to hide it from consumers. A new report claims that genetically modified foods or organisms can damage your health and even cause cancer, so I believe that we should have the right to know what’s in our food, so we can make the right choices for ourselves.
I believe it’s both of our responsibilities, because people can just check the ingredients, but many of them don’t know what half of the ingredients are. Companies hide ingredients making it hard for people to find out what is in their food, and I believe that we should know what we are eating because if a company hides ingredients, then the ingredients are probably not the best for you. You can’t just blame food companies for not informing us about what’s in our food we should be reading the ingredients, and searching the ones we don’t know, but the food companies make it hard to find the ingredients, so once again I think that it’s the consumer and the producer’s responsibility to inform us about what is in our food.
People don’t always have the same opinion, so there will always be conflict between people. One consequence is that there will be many arguments and the only way for all of them to be satisfied is if they are all on the same side which is most likely not going to happen.
A more clear list of ingredients would help people inform themselves about what’s in their food people can also read the ingredients. Producers shouldn’t hide ingredients and they should make it easy to find the ingredients online or on the ingredients list. I don’t think we are made to eat corn as often as we probably are eating it. I feel scared that the food I eat could be modified, because companies are trying to hide the fact that they modify food, making it seem like modified food is bad, but we don’t know if it’s bad for us or the food might not even be close to what we think is in it. The meat we eat can be pink slime and ammonia. Pink slime is a processed beef product that was originally used for pet food and cooking oil that was later approved for public consumption. These only a few of the many examples of products that can

ReplyDeleteThis might cause a problem because as stated, there is no variety. Our bodies need a well balanced diet with many different nutrients. Additionally, since there are only a couple large suppliers that tyrant the systems, if one of them has say, an e coli breakout, than all of the products that it works with will be affected. If we have more variety, than we will receive more nutrients and there will be less of a chance for complications and problems.
’
’I think that we were so surprised because most of us don’t realize how many foods have corn-based ingredients. Most of us don’t know the different ways to “spell” corn. I don’t think that the government is purposefully keeping that info a secret, but I don’t think that they can control the companies that make the products, and THEY withhold the info. This is a serious issue, we as a country need to be in a place where we don’t feel the need to hide information from consumers.
’
I think that is is wrong that the synonyms they use to hide corn are IMPOSSIBLE to read, pronounce, spell, or understand. I believe that they need to explain those crazy words in parenthesis next to the ingredient list. It would be the best situation if everything was explained and there was nothing to hide, and I believe we need to strive for that.It is just being a common courtesy human being.
I firmly believe that it is both. This is because people should not just be lazy and expect everyone to do all the work and research for them. People should truly care what is in their food and how it was made. We cannot expect that there will always be a producer to be there and reveal the hidden secrets, we need to be hungry for the truth. On the other hand, the producers need to have a good conscience and be clear about the item they are giving to other human beings. It is simply a two way street.
’ ’Some consequences of finding out the info is, they may not like what they find.; and, finding it may make them want to change their diet. This may be hard at first but it will make eating healthy a want for all. On the other hand it may be bad for the companies, they might lose consumers; however, this might lead them to jump on the bandwagon and produce better products.
There are many articles, movies, books, even laws like Kevin’s Law that are very beneficial and educational. People need to do the work, go talk to the grocery store, talk to the farmer at the local farmer’s market. Producers should also help by showing people their work environments be proud not to hide things from the consumers. They also could put a definition to go with the ingredients. there is so much out there waiting to make the food industry better.
’
Since we originally were farmers and grew our own food, we would know what was in the food, how it was treated and grown, and lastly what could have gone wrong with it. this was an insurance in safety; however, now that america is developed and continues to grow, there are many other ways to get food. People can go to the grocery store and have no idea where the food was grown, how it was made, or especially what is in it. This is an opportunity for big companies to add the insanely common ingredient, corn.

ReplyDeleteAnswer: It is a bad thing that nearly everything we eat has corn or soybean ingredient because our body needs more than just a corn a soybean based diet we need other types of food for our body as well. If most of the things we eat has either corn or soybean in it, there is a good chance of it being dirty or contaminated by other nearby crops that might have spayed harmful pesticides on their product. I don’t want to be eating that much corn or soybean ingredients, so i am going to be more careful with the food products i eat from now on.
Answer: I think we the consumers were so surprised to find out that so much corn went into our foods because in the past there wasn’t so much corn based products in our foods. but now nearly everything we eat has corn in it. I do think the government and food producers have been keeping this a secret from us. more people don’t know this because the big food companies pay to keep labels off of their product and not a lot of people get educated because if someone says something bad about the company's product the company can sue that person.
Answer: I feel that we should know what goes into our food. I dont think its right for the food producers to be hiding what goes into our food. They need to inform the public about what goes into our food. If the food producers keep hiding what goes into our food someone is going to get sick and possibly die. Then the food company is at fault because the public was never informed.

But I also think it should partially be our responsibility as well because if we are the ones worried about our health then we should be the ones demanding the companies to tell us what is in the food they sell us.

ReplyDeleteIt seems like they're putting more corn and soybeans in products because there's a lot of it and it is super cheap. If something is cheaper than others why not use it! People will do anything now and days just to make money. It taste the same why not use it?
It was a big surprise because when people are thinking about corn they are usually thinking of corn on the cop not breakfast cereals, salad dressings, margarines, syrups, and snacks, as well as
products like baby powder, glue, soap, alcohol, medicine, and fuel ethanol. I think the Government and food producers did hide this from us because they thought they could fool us with what we are eating. But honestly they did! if i had never read this article and watched the videos i would've never new corn was in all these things! Most people don't know this fact because they could hide it easily and we would never notice. For example Ketchup: (high-fructose corn syrup and corn syrup). When i'm eating Ketchup i always think of tomatoes. But now i think way different!
I feel that if a person buys the product the have enough knowledge to feel comfortable eating it. For me i feel that if my mom buys it then its healthy enough to eat. But for some people they really want to know what they are eating and most companies don't put all ingredients on the food label usually located on the back of the box/container it comes in.
I think the company that makes the product should be responsible to put all ingredients on the food label. I do agree in which we should be able to look the info up ourselves but why not make it more clear? I feel a lot more safer when i know what i'm eating and when i do find out what is really in it, it makes me not want to eat the product and not trust the company making it!
People that think its the producers fault feel very strong on what they are saying. I mean i understand what they are saying because why wouldn't the producer put the info so everybody can see? If they would just do that they can be straight up with the customer buying the product and honestly trust and feel more comfortable eating the product.Yes if a person really wants to know what they are eating they can always go online and find out but still online companies are trying to hide ingredients. For me it doesn't really effect me at this day and age but when i'm older and want my children to be as healthy as possible i would really appreciate knowing what is in there food and it is the same thing with my parents and other peoples parents, they just want to know the best way to go and companies are making that very difficult.
If people are responsible for informing themselves companies should make it a little easier to find. When i go on the internet to find info i have to go find links and click on a bunch of different pages just to find the actual amount of ingredients. What would help me is having the companies be more straightforward. It shouldn't take 15 minutes just to find what’s in a bag of chips. I should be able to click right on the product and all the ingredients should pop up. If the producers are responsible they should put all info on the food label and let it be. I've heard some people say theres not enough room! But when i look at a bag of chips or boxes of cereal i see MANY blank spaces and lots of room. If i was the producer i would want my customers to be as happy as possible and trust on what i am saying.

ReplyDeleteHaving just corn and soybeans in our food system is a problem because they don't offer enough variety. They are very limited ingredients to begin with and are often processed into an even less healthy ingredient such as high fructose corn syrup. We have learned that corn is fed to the livestock that provide you with meat, that means that we're not getting the most natural nutrition possible.
I think we were so surprised that corn is so common in our food system because we didn't realize how much of it is used to make processed ingredients such as high fructose corn syrup and fake sugars. The government have kept it a secret because they don't want us to learn how cheap they are making our food these days. The fact that we continue to buy these processed foods without truly knowing what they're made of, is just giving the government more reason to continue making less natural foods that are cheaper for them to produce. More people don't know this fact because our society doesn't take the time to educate themselves.
I feel like I should know what's in my food and what i'm putting in my body. Its important to know what you eat because it impacts your health. It also makes me not trust the companies that produce the food. Consumers should be able to trust the food they eating. I don’t think its fair that for everything we eat we have to ask ourselves if its safe or not.
I think its both, the producer and the consumers responsibility. As a consumer, we should educate ourselves on the ingredients that are in the food we eat. However, its the producers responsibility to clearly label the food so its not so hidden or mysterious.
A consequence for saying that its individual's responsibility to inform themselves on what's in their food could be that you have to find what your food is made of and how it was made. A consequence for saying that its the producers responsibility to inform consumers about what's in the product could be that you won't know what's in your food unless the producer informs you in some way and that you're putting all your trust in the producer.
A clear honest list of ingredients would help the consumer to be more informed.I think the companies need to do a better job of informing us on the product we purchase.Consumers can also inform themselves by being educated on what the ingredients are made of. If a consumer is suspicious about a product they can educate themselves so they are better informed.
I think peoples diets have been modified because corn is not necessarily healthy to be in everything you eat and feeding corn to cows increases the chance of E-Coli in the food system.I don't like the idea that my food is being modified because then I don't what what i'm eating and what the story behind the food i'm eating is. Its scary to think that you are putting fake ingredients in your body with almost everything you eat.
I think a way to be better informed on what's in our food is to be more proactive and educate ourselves on what ingredients are made of. For example, people can read the nutrition label before buying the product so they are informed on what they are buying. The nutrition label is also available on the company's website. If consumers are better informed, then maybe they would stop buying the product because they know that it has unsafe ingredients.

ReplyDeleteI think that It might be a problem in the long run because people are meant to eat a variety of foods and if a pest infected even one crop it could infect any and every product that they are used to make. Also are we getting the essential variety when everything we eat is made of corn supplements.
I think that so many people are hard to believe that corn s in so many of our foods because nobody reads the labels because the companies make them hard to understand. Also with all of the different names for corn(high fructose corn syrup, modified corn starch and many others) people actually need to look hard to find all of the corn in products, so yes I think that companies are trying to hide the amount of corn they use in most of their products.
Some ingredients are corn flour, corn oil, cornstarch, corn syrup, and high fructose corn syrup. This partially scares me because if the companies need to have that much corn in all of their products then are we really getting a variety of choices at the store or are we just buying the same food with different texture and flavor?
I think that the responsibility is the companies to clearly inform the consumer of every ingredient that is in their products and where it comes from. But i also think that the consumer should look harder to figure out what's in their food because if a consumer purchases a food that is labeled as not being healthy then they can't get mad if it affects them in a bad way.
Some consequences of thinking that it is completely their responsibility are that they may go anorexic, bulimic or just completely limit what they think they can consume and stay healthy. At the other end of the spectrum they might think that the fast food nation is completely to blame and will blame fast food for every health problem they or anyone they know might have. I think that it is more reasonable to be in the middle because it is your responsibility to know what they're eating but it is also the companies responsibility to let the consumer know what they use to produce their food.
Since I think that it is both consumer and producers responsibility i think that the company should make bigger labels and have the labels easier to read. Also i think that the consumer should look for the calorie and fat information but mostly look for the ingredients.
Companies are feeding all animals corn because it is cheap, abundant, and makes everything that eats it fat. So why wouldn't companies feed it to us. In all of our food, everything we eat, its just different colors, different textures, and different flavored corn.

ReplyDeleteIf cows are supposed to eat grass than give them grass! If fish need to eat fish food give them fish food! I see what the video is trying to say, that corn is cheaper by the pound. I get that but if the cows need and want grass they should give them grass. Animals should have rights just like we do. Peoples diets have been modified in the same way as cows. Like if we go on a diet sometimes our body isn't used to it so they react weird and have to stop but if they keep trying it our bodies will adapt and we will get used to it. Before watching this video i would've never thought they would give cows corn. I have always thought they gave them grass. Even my parents buying the meat didn't know the cows were eating corn.

ReplyDeleteOur food only being made from corn or soybean products may be a problem because people may be allergic to corn or soybeans. Your body has a very hard time digesting corn, so it has trouble with a lot of foods we eat. We may have been surprised that corn is a main ingredient in food because, we had no idea of how they turned corn into some other food. I think the government had a “thing” with the large companies, that gets them money so they didn't want us to know practically all we eat is a corn product. if we knew we would not interested in spending money on buying the products cutting of profits for both the company and the government. People have not had a care in the world as to what is in their food, to them as long as it tastes good it is going in their belly. I think it is unfair and it should not be legal for companies to tell us what is in our food by giving a scientific name that most the population has no idea what it truly is. I do not like not knowing what I eat, i find it disturbing. Many time my mom has told me what some ingredients are in food she has given me and if it sounds grows or i know what it is and it is strange then i do not eat the food. I believe it is the producers responsibility to inform the customer what is in their food. Us as the users should be able to look straight on the packaging and see the absolute truth about the foods we are eating. If the company lies to our faces i think that is wrong and the company should be fined large amounts of money or even shut down. Everybody has a different thought on who should be responsible to finding out what is in their food. If everybody has a different opinion then the company should not have to be forced to put all the truth onto the label, because not everybody agrees on one thing. The company is obviously going to choose the easiest way out that will help them get more buyers. The producers of the food products should put every single ingredient and everything that the customer would want to know about on the website of the company, this would help people find what they want to know about the food. For companies having to inform their buyers, they should be required to post everything on the label and a very clear contact line that would have to answer any question the consumer has about the product. Yes, i do believe peoples diets have been modified just like how we have modified what animals eat. We are now so used to artificial flavors and GMO’s that is what we need or the food does not satisfy us. They feed all animals corn, but us, in reality eat mostly corn too. Corn is a top ingredient for all food, even batteries. If my food is modified without me knowing, makes me a little upset, but i knew it would be considering most food is a GMO. I would appreciate it if companies made it nice and clear what GMO’s are and that that is what makes up their food.

ReplyDeleteThis might be a problem because our bodies do not digest corn very well and we should have some other type of food in most thing that will give us the protein that we need.
I think they are surprised because people don't really care what's in there food as long as it is cheap they will buy it. I think they really don't have to try to keep it from us because we don't care as long as it is cheap.
I think it is wrong of them to do that because it shows that they think they can get away from it and it shows that there is something to hide from us they don't want us to know
I think it is our fault because it is our job to know what we are eating. I think it is both of our jobs to know and for them to make it clear to what we are eating and not try to hide thing by giving them different names.

People were surprised about corn being such a big part in our food supply because..... Because nobody really knows what is in our foods. I think they kept it secret to keep the companies unexposed;because most people can care less about what exactly they’re eating.I personally feel like it should be illegal to not show every ingredient in a product and it should be required to list every single ingredient on the label. Who is to blame for us not knowing what exactly we are eating, I think its the people who we purchase it from, whether it be the fast food place, or the grocery store. It is more of the producers fault than the buyers fault
’ This issue is turning people against each other just because of their beliefs. Of Course they are going to be different, because not everyone has the same brain. It could create a big argument or lawsuit or some type of problem, which it already has.
’ If the people were to be better informed about their food, I think it would cause a drastic dietary change. People could do alot of things to find out, and so could the manufacturers, such as..
To request the nutritional facts on food before ordering it;or reading the labels before buying it
Maybe like an ingredients disclaimer on the menu, or include EVERY ingredient on their products’ labels’
’ The movie points out that cows and farm-raised fish, which are not biologically
suited to eating corn, are now given a modified diet that is based on corn. Do
you think people’s diets have been modified in a similar way? How do you feel
about the possibility of your food being modified without you being aware of it?

ReplyDeleteOur diets are almost completely controlled by the food corporations and how they raise their animals and what they put in the food that we consume, as well as the extremely low prices on food that is not as healthy as it should be. Nearly everything we eat contains soybeans or corn, and companies use that to give the consumers an illusion of diversity in products. Almost everything you can buy off of the supermarket shelves are either corn or soybean based.
ReplyDeletePeople are surprised that our food is so corn based because nobody ever bothers to read labels, and the food companies would prefer that the public knows as little as possible about the food that they put out for them. The government backs up the food companies in some ways, but they do require them to have nutrition facts on all foods, even though this policy may have been passed mostly because of the public suing companies about obesity and health issues. People don’t know these facts because of all the secrets that the companies keep from the public.
Food companies may list the corn based ingredients in their products, but some are unusual that the general knowledge of the public does not understand. It makes it easier to sell products too. I would not like to be eating food when I don’t know exactly what is in it, and I’m sure other people would not like it as well.
I think that it is the responsibility of the government and the food companies that sell to us to tell us what’s in our food, but it is also our responsibility to research or look closely if we want to know more about our food. So it would be both. I think that they need to tell us more though, and find it a little disturbing or unsettling that they would not tell us as much if they weren't required to by law.
If people were all responsible for learning about the food we consume, the companies should make it easier and stop hiding things. Post more online, on labels, and just make it less hard to understand so that the public knows what they are eating.
Our diets are modified as well as the animals being fed corn. I don’t like my food being modified, but we have little control over it, we should be told all the modifications to our food and how strong they are etc.

Should Companies Label Genetically Modified Foods?

ReplyDeleteWhat if there is pest or something in the corn and most of our daily food i is contaminated and no longer useful. We have a major problem because we have no corn.
We didn’t expect corn to in foods like ketchup or soda. They go and announce it so they probably didn’t want us to know. More people don’t about this because they were not told about it or warned they were just kept in the dark.
I think people should always know what is in there food. It is not right to hand someone a plate of black mush and not tell them what is inside.
It is the responsibility of the people who are distributing the food and are making the food. Mainly because they made it, they are the best ones to tell us about it. If not that the producers have to make it way more clear for consumers.
If the people inform themselves then they would see all these big words and expect them to be bad when really they could be good. When the producer informs them they could make false accusations and tell them a lie.
If consumers want to be informed more, then they should look at the nutrition label or do research on what is actually in their food. For producers, they can make the nutritional a lot easier to see and understand. They could also make more user friendly websites where they explain all ingredients.
It is very important how the cattle are fed because the consumers ultimately eat what the animals have been fed. If the animals eat manure all the time then that will greatly affect the consumer. If the animals are being fed something different the producer and farmers should inform the consumer.
They can spend more time looking at the nutritional labels and researching what they are feeding their families. It is greatly important for people to know what they are eating and drinking. Although some may be poor it doesn’t mean they can’t still make better choices.

ReplyDeleteIf you think about it, and realize that every single food product we eat has a corn ingredient and/or a soybean ingredient, everything we eat is the same. You wake up and have toast with jelly for breakfast, a salad for lunch and then a burrito for dinner and then say you have “had a wide variety of food today.” “Keeping it original.” When really, everything in that burrito comes from the same place as those bread crumbs from the morning. If corn is in everything, let’s cut out the middleman and just eat straight corn on the cob. Saves money, saves animals, and we’re eating it anyway. We’ll probably be healthier too.
People weren’t surprised because they found out corn was in everything, they were surprised at themselves for being so stupid and not realizing it earlier. Nobody kept it a secret. There is a food label on all of the products telling you that there is a bunch of corn ingredients. People don’t know more because they’re simply too lazy. They don’t want to read the labels and they don’t want to research.
I don’t think that it is smart when they put big words like D I G L Y C E R I D E S. Digly- who -whata? This is what it all comes down to. How they’re labeling the food. People see those words and give up and resort to the picture on the box to see if it looks good. If they were putting on the boxes, “Corn stuff that is unhealthy,” people would say, “Oh, No, i need some carrots.”
It’s both our responsibility as well as the producer’s responsibility. They need to put the truth on the package with words we understand and we need to read those words instead of just looking at the picture. I think the reason why the producers are not putting names we’ll understand on the labels is because it tastes too good. My reasoning is, the companies have realized that their product keeps getting bought. By them telling us what is in it with words that we will understand, it’ll cause a drop in sales and of course the company doesn’t want that. If the companies won’t fix their labels, we need to do what we are used to. Sitting on the computer. Just pause the game, pause the video, and just google it.
The consequences of having different opinions is just that-- having different opinions. The producers will look at the wide spectrum and say, “Oh, not everyone agrees that we need to change and not everyone agrees that they need to change. We don’t need to change anything.” They just see that it cancels things out. Plus, they still have to keep in mind that their company might lose money if they change something so that definitely is the deal breaker for them.
’
If it is the people who are responsible to inform themselves, resourceful websites can help. It can help translating those big words that nobody understands. If they don’t want to buy the product, then go home and find out that it’s bad for you, everybody has a smartphone know and creating an app with the big words and their meanings would help out a lot. If it is the producer’s responsibility, going back to what i said before, they can put words we’ll understand. Loss of money but gain of lives.
’
I definitely think that our diets have been changed. We are eating a lot more corn because everything has corn in it. I’m not as ticked off as some people are about our food being modified because it has shown that it can’t kill us. Instantly. The food we are eating can kill us over time but that’s because people aren’t eating it in moderation. With everything being equivalent to junk food, we need to eat it like junk food. We need to eat small portions so we don’t overload our bodies with this gunk. That’s what the whole obesity problem comes down to. Sure, keep the shelves full of crap. The food isn’t the problem, it’s how much we are eating that causes problems. Food doesn’t kill people, people eating too much kills people.
Myan A. EDA #1 Pelfrey
ReplyDeleteIt might be a problem that the majority of our food is made mostly from corn or soybeans because it is unhealthy and not safe for our bodies and food system. If most of the foods contains corn or soybeans, then our bodies won’t be getting enough variety of different foods. also, if the corn develops a pest or other growth/bacteria problems, then it will pass on to our foods and our bodies will be in danger. So many foods contain these ingredients that it would be hard to keep track of which foods contain the pests and which foods don’t.
I think we were so surprised about so much corn in our foods because the government and food producers have been keeping it a secret. Normally, you wouldn’t expect corn in many foods that have it, so people don’t pay attention to it. Also, the government and producers don’t want people to know because they are afraid their consumers will stop buying the products, which results in a decrease of sales and money. Most people don’t know because it is hidden in the food labels. For example, when we read corn syrup, we just think of syrup not actual corn.
I don’t think it is fair that ingredients are listed in food labels so vaguely. It makes me feel guilty because I didn’t even know what I was eating. People should be able to easily identify what is in their foods because they are the consumers eating it and if the food has a problem, they will be affected by it the most. Also, it would be a huge problem for the people that are allergic to corn because they don’t recognize what’s in their foods.
I think it is both the producer’s and our responsibility to know what is in our food. First it is the producers responsibility because they are the ones making it, so they know what the ingredients are. They should list all the ingredients clearly and then it is our responsibility to read them and make the right choices. However, it is hard to know if the producers don’t list what is in our food. So the main responsibility goes to the producer, but then it is our job whether or not to buy it.
The consequences of it being an individual's responsibility of informing themselves is not reading the ingredients, so becoming sick, getting an unhealthy diet, or having some kind of negative outcome. But, if it is the producer’s responsibility to inform consumers about what is in their foods, some consequences could be them getting their company shut down or having the blame for customers getting sick. Also, their companies could get examined more by the FDA and they could go to court for cases. The consequences of it being both responsibilities is that if a consumer gets sick, they don’t know who to blame or talk to. Its harder to find out the reason why they got sick.
To help inform people about what’s in their food, producers need to make it more clear, instead of hiding the ingredients in small letters, scrunched together on the back of the product. They could have more labels about the amounts of sugar, fat, sodium, etc. in their products on the front. Also, producers need to stop falsely advertising their ingredients to make them sound healthy, when they aren’t, they need to come out with the truth so consumers know what they are buying.
I think people’s diets have been modified in a similar way because looking at our foods now, there are more unusual things, normally not thought to be eaten or needed, in the ingredients than 10 years ago. I don’t like that my food could be modified without me knowing it because it is unfair to feed someone ingredients they don’t know about. It puts less trust in the companies products and reputations, and is riskier to our health if we are unaware. We are not suited to eat flame repentant and people just found out that it was found in the ingredients of gatorade. Many people wouldn’t have bought gatorade if they knew there was flame repentant in it, but the companies kept it a secret for a long time, which is unsafe.

ReplyDeleteThis can be a problem because we need different types of nutrients in our body. Too much of the same thing can get someone sick. Also if they find something bad in corn then we are putting our self in danger since like Professor Larry Johnson says that about 90% of stuff at the store has corn
I think that surprises people because corn is food, and its like saying baby’s diapers and batteries are made of food? I think government and food producers have kept it a secret because it is weird to say corn is in mostly everything. I don't think people know this fact because its hard to believe corn is everywhere, and also because who would imagine corn in everything.
I don't think that its right. We should be able to know what we are putting in our body, its our body, not anyone elses! Maybe companies just care about making money, but they should care about the consumers. We need to know if what we put in our body is healthy or not. If they tell us what truly is in our food, we have the choice to do what we want, but at least we were aware.
I think the responsibility to inform us what is in our food should be the people who pack the food. But I also think it is everyone who receives the food before it gets to the stores responsibility, because if they had the food at one point they should inform the next person who receives it and it should just keep going to the next people until it gets in hands of the consumer. I think it shouldn't be our responsibility to find out the producer’s responsibility because they should inform people either way.
If people are responsible for informing themselves they could start reading the item they are going to buy or look up on the internet what ingredients the item has. If producers are responsible they should put every ingredient on the food item. Like for example, on cigarettes it says that it can cause many different cancers, they should put stuff like that on food.
I think peoples diets have been modified in a similar way. I don’t think its right that our food may be modified, we should know what is in the food we put in our body. As i said earlier, its our body, not anyone else.
’Haley P. EDA Period 1 Pelfrey Part 1
ReplyDeleteWell, our bodies weren’t made to live off of just purely corn and soybeans. We, as humans, need a variety of food without any of it having corn or soybeans in it. Plus, the animals that make our milk, cheese, and meat are suffering as well. For example, cows were not designed by nature to eat corn. They were meant to eat grass! Naturally, the grass keeps E Coli away where as corn is what makes it develope in the stomach and they’ve become acid resistant which means we can’t kill it. Corn has benefitted us but now it’s gone too far.
’ Most people might be surprised because this being a free country and all would make us think that we have all the variety in the world, but we don’t. The government just wants us to think that we do. They aren’t truly doing it to just make tons of money, all though that is part of it. I’d say a big factor is that there’s so many of us and they’re trying to keep up with producing food for the growing numbers of Americans. They have kept plenty of information from us, although I’m sure that at least some people knew what was going on. The government and big companies don’t really wants us to know that what we’re eating isn’t all that healthy for anyone really. We need food, they need money. Simple as that. I feel...like the only way I could really stop the government and the big companies is by choosing to not eat their products. Remember, we all have a choice and they can’t force us to eat their products. Once one person stops and thinks about what they’re buying, then that’s when companies are in trouble. They feed off of our absent minds and we feed off of their genetically modified food. It’s become apart of people lives. Also, some people just simply can’t buy healthy food because it’s too expensive. Again, they are feeding off of our weaknesses, whether it be us without enough money or the fact that we just don’t think sometimes. They won’t stop until someone finally puts their foot down.
’ I believe that it is both the consumers’ and the companies’ responsibility to either find out or give out the information needed. Companies should give out information, but we shouldn’t be so naive to think that they will give us the information blindly. See what companies do is “inform” you about what you’re eating, but the truth of the matter is that they have found ways around the law of telling us what exactly is in our food. Yes they give us information, but they are so sneaky that they only give us the big scientific name for all these chemicals and preservatives. So yes, it is some of our responsibility to find out what’s in our food and if we really cared, we would.
Haley P. EDA Period 1 Pelfrey Part 2
ReplyDeleteWell, companies get a whole lot of hate for their superficial ingredients, yet we still eat their gosh dang food! And why? because we are so weakened by the ads and by their words that are so carefully planted inside our brains like some parasite. They should get in major trouble with all the crap they get away with, but yet us, the citizens, don’t do much about it. And yes, all of us have at least the smallest amount of knowledge of what they do to our food. We may think at first, “Ew, I’m not eating there anymore,” but come the next day and they’re eating a Big Mac. That’s how it is apparently. We need to show the government that we cannot take this! We all deserve healthy, reasonably priced food! People will say, “Well, it’s all in the matter of the economy and blah, blah, blah,” but in reality, if we were smart enough we would work together to grow and make healthy food. Once we do, we should share it with the world so that almost everyone can live happy, healthy lives.
’ Well, what I believe is that we are responsible for do the research of what our food contains, but the only real way is if the produce gave out just the smallest amount of information, and they do. The companies shouldn’t be afraid to display what’s in our food. They are only afraid because they put so much of the unhealthy, scientific ingredients. They should tell us exactly what is in our food, whether we like what’s in it or not. If they were smart enough they wouldn’t put those horrible things in our food, and come up with ways to keep things naturally healthy, but they haven’t so we should most definitely say something. We should be heard.
’ Well, of course our diets are based off of corn. I mean, look at everything we eat! Corn is in everything we eat from soda to cake mix to meat. It’s even in things like diapers. Today, this country, specifically, is based off of corn because we subsidise everything with corn so that it’s cheap, easily accessed, and so there’s a ton of it. The government even pays the farmers to overproduce, and now all of the good farmers are being sued because the chemical based corn and soybeans are flying into their farms even though they cannot control what the dang wind does. It’s absolutely ridiculous. They can’t fight back because why? because they don’t have the money to do so. In this country, it’s like this: if don’t money, you don’t have anything. No food, no education, and in many cases, no voice. This may be America but the middle to low class people are losing everything while the fat cats chow down on their next meal.

ReplyDeleteCorn is in almost everything we eat because corn isn't that expensive to buy. Corn is almost very easy to plant and grow. Soybean product are about the same thing like corn soybean products are cheap and very easy to grow. Corn is very unhealthy for us because our body needs a variety of foods not just the same meal over and over again. Another thing to consider if the corn has a little pest with him that pest can be harmful to us. What the other side might say is what if that pest helps the food grow. Well let me tell you sir we never will know if that pest is harmful or not so just stay away from corn if you see something suspicious.
We were surprised because we as teenages only thought that corn was in popcorn that is why its called popcorn. When i learned that corn was in almost everything we eat about 90% of we eat is corn that was very surprising. I highly believe that the government was keeping this a secret from the citizens of the United States. the other side might say what if it was just testing. Well if it was testing don’t you think you should keep it in the laboratory until you figure out it is safe and then send it out to the world.
Food labels should label the ingredients in a way that everyone can understand not just only one person. If one person doesn’t know what an ingredient is they should make it easier to understand like maybe give an explanation of what it is or just a simpler name for it. I find that the easiest way to fix the problem with food labels.
’
I say its both of our responsibility to know what is in our food. Its their responsibility to tell us what is in the food and its ours to know what the ingredients mean and so on and so forth.
Like i said before its both of ours not just one person its both. The consequences can be fatal or severe its all about our choices. If we keep doing what we are doing we will not live to see our grandchildren grow and make good choices. If we keep up the american diet which consists of cheeseburgers, fries, and a large drink they can get type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes are now very common in teens and adults, but mostly teens. Teens are now getting obese and having serious medical issues with the diet they need to make healthier food cheaper.
’
If people were responsible they need to know what every ingredient is and what are the consequences. If the producers were responsible they need to make labels a lot easier to read not put long words that no one knows what they mean. Like i’ve said millions of times make the nutrition labels easier to read.
’
Of course they are modified the same way if the modified for cows to make them large and bigger what will stop them from doing the same thing to fish. They have the stuff, they will give the ingredient to the poor fish nothing will stop them unless the government actually tried to stop then that will stop them. It all comes down to the consumer and knowing what is in their food.

ReplyDeleteIt’s a problem that the majority of everything we eat is made mostly of corn and soybeans because we don’t get all of the vitamins and nutrients from any other type of food. All we’re eating is the same thing over and over again so there is no variety to choose from. Corn and soybean are in most of our food because it’s cheap and easy to grow, but to put it in everything that we eat is going overboard. Over time, if the “farmers” use pesticides too much, one day, the pesticides might get into our food. On the other hand, the companies might say that if they keep growing cheap corn, they can sell their products for less money, therefore, more people will be able to afford food. They might also say that for now, the pesticides are doing a good deed by helping the plants grow, and keeping unwanted insects away.
I think that so many people were surprised to find this out because when you look into your local supermarket, you think you see so much variety in the brands when in reality only about five big companies are controlling everything. I think the government and food companies have kept it a secret because if people know that all that’s in their food is corn, then they will surely speak up about the issue. There is a chance the people in the community will boycott until they get quality food in the supermarket.
When an ingredient is in my food that I don’t know about, i feel like I’m being cheated. Anything that’s inside the food should be in the food label and that’s that. No questions asked. It makes it a bit difficult to eat food sometimes because you never know what the companies put in there without telling you.
I think that it is both our and their responsibility to make us know what is in our food. It’s our responsibility to read the nutrition labels of what we eat, but it is the company’s responsibility to actually put what they have in the food on the labels.
I stated before that it is both our and the company’s responsibility to know what’s in our food. If we don’t read our nutrition labels, and all of the ingredients are listed there, it would be our fault, because we didn’t read what was right in front of us. On the other hand, if the company doesn’t list all the ingredients that are present in the food, it would be their fault. Consequences can be diabetes, obesity, or maybe even food poisoning from e coli.
Like I’ve said many times, reading the nutrition label would help greatly in informing us about what is in the product. Companies can help by having commercials about what ingredients are in their food or make the nutrition label bigger, so more people would notice it.
I think we have been modified in a similar way. We were made to eat a variety of food, but almost everything in the store shelf contains corn or soybeans. This means that our body is trying to modify itself to run solely on just that, when it’s made to eat so much more. Like before, i feel left out and cheated because we try to eat what we think is right for us. If the food we buy to be healthy no longer has the nutrients that it had before and they didn’t tell us that, it wouldn’t be fair to the consumers.

ReplyDeleteThe vast majority of our products contain corn or soybean because it is very cheap to produce and sell. the government subsides farmers to overproduce corn. this can lead up to obesity or diabetes type two because if corn and soybean are in practically everything that we eat it will cause health problems later on. the only product that may not contain this is vegetables or fruits but no one only eats just vegetables or fruits they need other types of food but that food will contain a corn, soybean, or high fructose syrup.
People may have been really surprised that the majority of their food has corn in it and also household items. I guess because when people think of corn they think of corn on the cob or canned corn and don't realize that corn can be genetically altered to make something else. If people are surprised by this then maybe the government has been keeping the secret of corn being prevalent in our foods. Because the government hasn't been telling the public openly about what is in their foods not a lot of people know this.
it make you feel as if you have no power of the food you eat because ninety percent of products come from corn or something corn based. By having corn ingredient listed in unrecognizable ways out of the 26 a-z corn based ingredients a product could have multiple corn based ingredients in it and the consumer would have no idea that they are eating multiple corn ingredients all in one product. so the human diet has changed over time without letting the consumer know. It could also bring bad health issues in the future
i think it is both because if a product is made and the producer isn't honest about it it may cause problems to someone who isn't informed enough to know that there is something in their product that can harm them Nutrition labels that the company puts on their product need to be more clear about what is exactly is in their products so it isn't some random letters in the ingredients that the consumer would probably ignore and buy it anyways so it may also be the consumers responsibility to understand and read labels carefully as well as the company providing them.
Some consequences might be that the producers might not say what their product is completely made of and how its made that someone might not know and have an allergic reaction to the product.and doctors may not know why. and this could continue with other people allergic to the product. Consequences for the consumer is that they might exactly know what they are eating and what it contains and completely ignore it and still consume it and become obese over time or get diabetes type 2 then they will blame the company but in fact they we the ones ignoring what's in the food and ate it anyways. so it is really a choice of the consumer to eat or not to eat the product.
responsibility of informing themselves something helpful would be to have reading labels that are understandable not like the ones currently today that have unrecognizable ingredients. the labels should contain like how much you should have a serving of this a day of lets say sodium and how much is in their product. If companies have the responsibility of informing their consumers they should at least be honest about how their product is grown and what is really in it. That way it is both the producer and consumers responsibility of knowing whats in the product and being aware and eating the product at their own risk..
i feel that are diets are changing just the same as the corn eating fish. I think that because most of our food comes from corn and we are eating corn everyday. and products might have multiple corn ingredients in them so people don’t realize how much corn they are actually eating. over time our bodies will be affected by the amount of corn eaten and maybe our bodies will begin to produce e coli just like the cows in the film.

ReplyDeleteAs humans, we were designed for nutrition diversity. Ever since the start of civilization, there were two groups for gathering food; the hunters who hunt for the supply of meat and the gather-ers who pick and gather organic crops. With corn and soybeans being the most abundant ingredient in our current generation, our bodies are not getting the proper nutrition we need for a healthy lifestyle. The focus in supermarkets have always been towards the aisles with rows and rows chips, sodas, candies, and other snacks, not ever in the corners of organic vegetables and fruits. When I was a kid, I never left the supermarket without a new packet of snacks.
When you look at a local supermarket, all of the attention is on the rows of snacks and candies. Aisle after aisle is a new selection of snacks. Customers are alluded to believe the diversity of the aisles in supermarkets with their cleverly arranged sections of snacks in the center and the organic vegetables and fruits tightly packed in the small corners of the market, when in reality they are filled with corn row after row manufactured by the same company. Us customers most likely would be surprised, maybe even outraged, if we replaced every bag of chips or sets of soda with a single corn cob. However, that is exactly what we look at when we pass by the rows in a supermarket. We are so surprised because we have been blinded by the illusion of diversity for so long, and most customers are still in fact seemingly blind to the reality behind the cans of soda and bright bags of chips. This is because the truth within packaging has almost disappeared over the past decade. Meat packages are printed with a cow grazing through a bright green field on a sunny day, cereal boxes are all different colors with different mascots, artificially flavored chips or fruit snacks have print stating so as small as my handwriting on the bottom corner of the bag. The government and food producers seem to agree on the fact that you can’t know the truth anymore unless you work for the food industry. But as customers that are paying for the food, therefore keeping the food industry in business, shouldn’t we have the right to know what is in our food and how it is made?
As stated in my disclosure above, the government and food producers seem to acquiesce on the idea that we cannot know the reality behind the foods we purchase and consume unless we work for the government or food industry. But as customers that are paying for the food, therefore keeping the food industry in business, I think that we should definitely have the right to be able to comprehend what is in the food we eat.

ReplyDeleteI think the food industry should have the ultimate responsibility of informing us what is in our food and how it is processed. I believe that it is just selfish to cover the reality so the industry will have a good business with regular customers. I feel that it is the producer and the government’s responsibility to make it clear to us how and what our food is made out of. How would it be our responsibility to find out if the industry will not reveal the truth? We are paying the industry to produce our food, so we should have the right to know what is behind the process of our food.
One consequence of having the industry revealing the truth about food processing is that they would have a great downfall to their business because customers may find their actions greatly disturbing or gross and stop purchasing their products. However, the industry didn’t have to make it gross in the first place. With such power through the government, they should at least know the difference between right or wrong.
If the people are responsible for informing themselves about what is in their food, one thing that would help spread the message with be more movies like Food Inc. Food Inc. sends a powerful message about the world of the food industry with different point of views from different people. Another action that may help spread awareness would be the passing of laws like Kevin’s Law that is described in the movie. If Kevin’s Law was passed, it would help spread awareness to consumers. However, this connects to the producers being responsible. The industry and the government should allow the passing of laws like Kevin’s Law. If they are responsible, they have to reveal the truth despite the fact that it may hurt their business. But for the sake of a good business in the industry, they are killing people and children which I feel is both selfish and outrageous.
Yes, I do think that our diet as well has been modified. Everything we eat is connected to corn, whether we are aware of it or not. The cows eat corn, then we eat beef which was fed off of corn. Corn is also the top ingredient almost all in everyday groceries, from chips to syrups. We were never designed to eat so much corn, like stated before, we were designed to eat meat from hunting and crops from gathering. I feel that it is outrageous that it is very likely that most of the foods we eat are modified without being aware of it. We are paying for the industry to produce more food, we should know HOW it is produced and what it is being produced with.

ReplyDeleteIt’s a problem that most of our food is made from corn because we don’t get the food diversity we need. Our body can’t live off of corn we need other nutrients besides corn. If the soybeans or corn get a virus, 90% of our food is wiped out. Then if we have a corn shortage we won’t have the diesel to transport our food the market. The country would be living off of the 10% that doesn't contain corn, people would go hungry because we rely so much on our corn.
’ I was surprised to find out that corn is in 90% of our food because it doesn’t taste like corn. When I found out that corn is so much of our food it makes me wonder, what else is hiding in our food? The producers want their secret kept for the simple reasons of corn is cheap, easy to get, improve their shelf life in stores and can easily be disguised in our food. Also what would people think if they knew corn was in most of their food? When you look at the list of ingredients in food products we can see corn syrup but for most people when we see that our first thought isn’t corn, we don’t think anything of it. Having corn in 90% of our food without our knowledge makes me wonder if I’m eating corn or the actual product.
I think it’s both the consumer’s job to find out what is in our food since we’re the ones eating it. We can’t put all of our trust in the producers, just because it says hamburger on the label doesn't mean it’s all meat. Then it should also be the producer’s job to label their products, so the consumer can easily see the ingredients without having to look it up online.
If you are for the animals or workers being treated poorly all the see is money. If you are against the factories you see it for what it is, the factories treating the workers poorly. You probably don’t eat their food either.
If people were responsible to inform themselves about the ingredients in their food, I would suggest looking it up online(if it’s not already on the package), research more about how the food is processed and made. Then if it was the company’s job to inform people about their food they need to label all foods in an easier, bigger font to read and put all of their ingredients up online.
’ I think people’s diets have been modified slightly. Our food products aren’t one hundred percent corn, they only have some corn syrup in them. We can still eat our vegetables, fruit, nuts, bread, seeds and certain types of meat without having any corn in them. Corn products are usually in Genetically Modified Foods, some beverages(soda, fruit drinks etc.), chips, fast food products these are the foods we don’t really need to survive, we are the ones choosing to eat the food with corn in it. Personally I don’t like the idea of people messing with my food, if I want peanut butter, I want peanut butter not all the extra stuff the put in it.

ReplyDelete It Is Not Good For us To Have Only One Kind Of Food Because It Can Make Us Sick. It Is Also Not Good Because Then If Something Were To Happen To The Crop(Like A Fire Or Bombing) If We Had A Dependency On The Crop We Would Starve Because Of Lack Of The Food. as Humans We Need A Variety Of Foods In Order To Get The Correct Amount Of Nutrients And If We Had Corn In Everything We Would Have Far Too Much Of The Nutrients In Corn.
I Think That The Government Was Keeping Us From This Knowledge Because Then We Would Revolt Or Something And Demand That We Have More Variety And Less Corn, Because That Would Make It Harder For The Government To Stay In Control And Keep Us Fed. Corn Is Cheap And Is Abundant And Can Also Be Used For More Than Just Food So If We Demanded That There Should Be Less Corn Then That Would Make It Hard To Get Ahold Of Other Things Like Batteries Or Diapers BEcause Of The Lack Of Corn.
I Like To Know What I Am Putting In My Body Because You Only Get One Chance. You Want To Keep The Body You Have Alive For As Long As You Can, However, Not Knowing What Is In Your Food Can Make It A Very Hard Thing To Do. I Feel That When I Was Ignorant About The Ways Corn Is In My Food I Was Less Of A Lookout For Less Corn In My Food And Was Ok With Getting Any Kind Of Food, But I Feel That It Was Wrong For The Government To Have Corn In My Food And Not Inform Me Of What I Was Consuming.
I Believe That The Companies Should Label The Food More Accurately And Easier To Understand. It Also Would Be A Good Idea To Have Consumers Look And See What We Are Eating Because The Nation Is Getting Lazier And Lazier As More Advanced Technology Comes Out. So Companies And The Consumers Should Make It Easier To Understand Labels And Look To See What They Are Consuming.
Well In The Consumer Part Of The Spectrum It Says That We Should Be Responsible To Look Up And Find Out What We Are Eating, Because If We Want To Eat It Then We Should Be Willing To Research And Find Out What We Are Putting Into Our Bodies Because You Only Get One. The Other Side Says That It Is The Company's Job To Label The Food Properly And Tell Us What We Are Eating, After All They Are The Ones Who Possess It And Create It.
If Consumers Were Responsible For Looking To See What Is In Their Food Then Believe That Having Accurate Labels Would Help. If We Had Accurate Labels That Listed Everything That Is In Our Food In A Non-Scientificy Way, Then It Would Be Easier And Better. If The Labels Were Clear And Easy To Understand Then It Would Be Better For The Society Because They Could Get All The Nutrients That They Need And Avoid The Junk Foods. If Producers Are Responsible For Knowing What They Are Responsible For Informing Us About What Is In Our Food Then They Could Put Labels Or Signs That Say Something Like “This Meat Was Processed In (Factory Name) And Has Been Cleaned Of All E-Coli” But Try To Be Truthful Because As A Consumer You Trust Your Food Producers.
I Believe That Our Diets Have Been Modified. It Looks Like The Food Companies Have Managed To Put Some Essence Of Corn Material In Almost All Of Our Foods. It Is In Meat Because The Animals Are Fed Corn. It Is In Cereal And Others Because Of High-Fructose Corn Syrup. I Personally Feel That We As Humans Have The Right To Know What We Are Consuming Because It Can Affect Our Bodies In Many Ways Because We Could Be Allergic To Something In The Food But Not Know Because It Is Labeled Falsely. If Our Food Was Modified Then it Would No Longer Be A Worry Whether Or Not We Would Have Food On The Table The Next Day And The Majority Of Our World Would Become Obese. Food Can Be Modified In Several Ways Though, It Can Have Flavor Added Or It Could Have Essential Vitamins.I Feel That It Can Be Good To Have Modified Foods But If We Misuse Our Power To Created Enhanced Foods Then It Can Turn Out To Be A Terrible Thing. .

It is a problem that the majority of our food contains either a corn or a soybean product because the amount of these products in our diet is not healthy for us. The human body needs to have a variety of food, our diet cannot just consist on corn. If the corn crops develop a pest or other problem our food system would be in danger, and so would we. If these crops developed a pest what would we make our food out of? Which brings us to our actual problem: food altered in such a way that it will resist pests, excess rain or droughts.
I think that the reason of why we were surprised when we heard about the fact that most of our food contains corn was because we never really think about what is in our food, we just think about the taste and the appearance. We have been growing up knowing that ketchup is just ketchup, when we think about the ingredients that it might contain and if we do we just think ketchup=tomatoes. We just think of the basic things that our food might contain. I don’t think that the government has kept this a secret; suffice it for us to read a label to know what is it that it contains. But the problem is that, exactly. We couldn't understand what those label mean. The government does not need to hide any of this from us; our ignorance does takes care of that.
I don’t like for ingredients to be included in my diet without my knowledge. Why? Because I could be allergic to said ingredient, or because I don’t like the source of that ingredient (caviar : millions of fish eggs that did not make it to maturity) or because if these ingredients need to be hidden, then they might not be healthy or even desirable for my diet.
I think that it is the governments and producer’s responsibility to inform us about our nutrition and what our food contains. It is part of their job. But it is also our responsibility to read and make sure we fully understand the meaning and impact of this information. It will be a waste of time and money to have companies and government departments investigating and gathering data only to have it recycled along with the can without it even being read. Moreover, there are whistle blower organizations that do sound the alarm when they feel something is wrong with our food, but they lack credibility because they do not have the economic means to make their investigations credible and wide reaching.

Yes people do have the right to know what's in their food. Cows are being fed corn which leads them into getting E coli. Which means we eat that meat, and eventually we get sick and die. Also I don't like the fact that our food is being genetically modified, its gross we don't know what they are putting inside the food that is being genetically modified.
It is a problem that corn is contained in all of our foods. It is an issue that we are having in the world today. I think the reason why food contains corn and soybean is because corn is cheap. Animal farm workers are using corn to feed cows, and the reason why they do that is because corn is cheap. Its a problem to some people that see corn in every food label because, animals are being fed corn. They can't feed cows grass because it’s too expensive, cows that are eating corn is leading them to E Coli. Farmers that are killing the cows with E coli, are being killed and are being shipped to fast food places that families are going to. Eventually those people that ate the meat contaminated with E coli are sent to the hospital and eventually died.
The reason why people are so surprised to be seeing corn in all our foods is because, eating so much corn can get you fat. One thing that I found from reading an article online says that corn is now genetically engineered food the same with soybeans. Humans are at risk of eating food that contains corn that is genetically engineered. Yes, of course the government and food producers have kept it as a secret. They want the people to keep buying their food products, so that the business can make a lot of money. People don't know about this fact because, no one ever talks about it. People are in danger of probably eating meat that is contaminated with E coil.
Ingredients that contain corn, Breakfast cereal, ketchup, soft drinks, cake mix, yogurt, bread, jam, margarine, vanilla extract, juice, salad dressing, and white vinegar. But wait theres more, ascorbic acid-Oranges and Kiwi fruit. Baking powder- Biscuits, cookies and cake. Caramel- Coca Cola, Smarties, Blow-up gum, SoBe Life water, Red Bull, Tillamook cheese, and Green home Instant noodles. Cellulose-Dole Fruit, General Mills, Kellogg's, KFC(yum brands),Kraft Foods, Mcdonald's, Nestle, Pepsi, Sara Lee, Sonic, Taco Bell(yum brands), Weight Watchers International and Wendy’s Arby’s. Citric acid- Canned Foods, Soft Drinks and Wine. Corn flour-Baked goods. Corn oil-Mazola. Cornstarch- Facial Wipes(Dove daily hydrating Cleansing cloths) Sunscreen Below SPF 15, Eye shadow(AND LOTS MORE). Corn syrup- Candies, soft drinks and fruit drinks. Diglycerides- Peanut butter, Mayonnaise, Margarine and Cooking oils. Ethyl acetate- Apple flavor and wine. Fructose- Fruit, Vegetables, Sweeteners, Juices, Legumes, Beverages and Eggs. Fumaric acid- Dairy Products, Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts and Seeds, Baked Foods and Grain, Processed Meats and Mixed Foods and Beverages and Condiments. Gluten- broth in soups and bouillon cubes, breadcrumbs and croutons, fried foods, imitation fish, lunch meats and hot dogs, matzo, most chips and candy, salad dressings,self-basting turkey, soy sauce and rice and pasta mixes. High-fructose corn syrup- Juice Cocktails,Soda,Breakfast Cereal,Yogurt,Salad Dressings,Breads and Baked Goods,Candy and Candy Bars and Nutrition Bars invert sugar, Maltodextrin- Eyeshadow and lipstick. Saccharin- Baked goods, soft drinks and ice cream. Sorbic acid- Bakery foods, cheese and soft drinks. Sorbitol- Candy and gum. starch- Wheat grains and Brown rice. Sucrose- Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts and Dairy Foods. Xanthan gum- Fruit juices, Dairy Products, Salad Dressing and Microwaveable Foods. Zein-maize. I feel that it is gross and weird to see these kind of ingredients in my food labels that I don't even know what they are, it scares me.

ReplyDeleteThis is an easy one. What are the consequences of not informing on the producer’s part and the consequences of not informing ourselves: disaster. Those producers that choose not to inform the public, wind down paying much more than they bargained for (case in point: serving pink slime or horse meat or saw dust as with taco bell and other fast food companies). Those individuals that chose not to inform themselves pay by eating this food.
For people to be more informed or better informed, it would be helpful to form scientific commissions that can investigate what the producers are telling us and at the same time translating to the general public what this information means. Also, we would need special laws that can deal with the misinformation or blatant lies that some companies will incur into (including pharmaceutical companies).
Companies can always present their case as to why some foods need to be produced the way they are and allow for people to make their own choice.
I do think that people’s diets have been modified in a similar way. Modification in food processing or fabrication should not be a problem by itself. Not very long ago, humans started eating tomatoes and in those times these were thought to be poisonous. With this, I am trying to say that change by itself is not bad. To modify our diet does not have to mean bad. What is bad is to modify our food chain in detriment of our health and to the advantage of the big companies in that exact order.
I do not like for my food to be modified without my knowledge. I do not even like for my mother to change the shampoo brand without my knowledge or permission. If it is for me, then I need to be informed and allowed to make a choice.

It is the government and the company's responsibility to inform us what's in our food. If they don't tell us what's in our food, then it’s the consumers job to find out what in it. And should probably take the company to court so they can get sued. But there is a problem, you will never win the company will win. They won't get sued, they’ll do the best they can do to not get sued. The company doesn’t want to tell us what's in our food, because if they did then we wouldn’t eat it. The people will freak out if they found out what was in it.
Each spectrum has their own opinion, others won't care about what they eat. The one that are responsible will care what they eat. People need to know that you can get sick from eating something that is not good for you. Also it’s not fair that the company is getting so much money, that money is coming out of our wallets. There is or probably will be a rise of genetically modified organisms.
If people are responsible for knowing what's in their food, they would probably got to someone who has worked in a factory that has worked and seen how animals are being treated and what's being put inside the meat. If producers are responsible they would probably hire a lawyer so the people wouldn’t find out what’s in the meat. The producers for sure do not what their companies to shut down they want to keep going and going, to make a lot of money.
I think the people’s diets have been modified but, not in a similar way because farmers are feeding animals corn, corn helps make the animals grow faster and fatter. That way they're able to see, and we the people would buy the meat raw or cooked in a place that is not health for us. Are diet is different from the animals, for us humans supposedly we are eating food that are good for us, for example high-fructose corn syrup is in breakfast cereals. It would be a problem for me to eat food that is genetically modified because, I don't even know what ingredients there putting in the food, I wouldn’t want to get sick.

ReplyDeleteThis film talked about a lot of different fascinating facts about our foods. In fact, a food science professor, Larry Johnson said, “If you go and look on
the supermarket shelf, I’ll bet you 90 percent of [the products] would contain
either a corn or soybean ingredient. And most of the time, it’ll contain both.” This is shocking and not in a good way. If the majority of what we eat is soybeans and corn then our body will get little to no diversity in our vitamins and what we’re eating. It might also be worse considering what if one or more of these crops develop a pest or nutrients deficiency or other problems! That said problem will eventually be in all of the foods it is put in and make us all sick. Just because corn and soybeans are overproduced doesn’t mean it should be put into everything. What if the government decides to overpay the farmers to overproduce healthy things instead of corn and soybeans? Would this make it so food producers would put more healthy foods into everything?
What about the people who had no idea that corn and soybeans were so relevant to all of our food choices? They are shocked! The food producers have been keeping it a secret for a reason. They don’t want this kind of bad emotions about their food products so they just don’t tell the consumer. This makes the consumer buy whatever they’d like and not really know what’s in their food that might just lead to their demise or illness. Even if the consumer doesn’t get sick from these constant unhealthy foods being put inside them as fuel, it doesn’t make this a right thing to do. Some people have even died from these unhealthy foods! Isn’t one person dying extreme enough to make food producers change their ways? Apparently not.
Even if the food producers put the label of corn-based ingredients into the food label, people still might not recognize them. There are super long, unpronounceable ingredients that contain corn. So if people are specifically looking for a corn-based ingredient they wouldn’t be able to really find one unless they specifically know what they’re looking for. I specifically am not too thrilled about having unknown ingredients in my daily food. What if there is a person who newly recognized their corn intolerance and they didn’t know that corn was in nearly all of our foods and that information was hidden from them? Depending on how severe their allergy is, they could get hives or even die. If they weren’t able to figure out the ingredients of what they are putting in their body, I think it’s extremely unfair.
Elizabeth A. EDA Period 2 Pelfrey (part 2)
ReplyDeleteI believe that it is the producer's’ job to inform us on what is specifically in our food. Not all the mumbo-chumbo that we see in our nutrition labels today. I think it should be part of the producer’s job to do this, if it is not already. If someone is allergic to a certain ingredient and that ingredient is not labeled specifically on the product, It’s not the consumer’s fault! Anyone who thinks it is, is very single-minded and thinks in a very black-and-white way. I don’t think a consumer should have to look up every ingredient on a nutrition label just because there is a risk that they might trigger an allergic reaction if they eat this certain product because it might have a hidden product in it that they’re allergic to. The food producers should have already done this!
Since I believe it is the food producer’s job to label our food correctly, here are some ways they could do that more efficiently. Nutrition labels are so small on products these days that I know a handful of people who can’t even read them! They could also add every single ingredient helping out all of the consumers.
It makes me sick when I hear that animals which were not designed to eat corn are being forced to eat corn. The fact that corn is actually pretty harmful to the animals doesn’t help. Corn actually helps the spread of E Coli. Without the animal’s corn diets, sure we wouldn’t have as fat animals but, our meat would be healthier. If we are unintentionally being fed the corn too, then that is pretty upsetting. How could food producers do the same thing to humans that they’ve been doing to animals before slaughter? Even if it wasn’t intentional, once they realized what they were doing they should’ve stopped. Especially when we ourselves aren’t even aware of it. Do they have any conscience?

ReplyDeleteCorn and soybeans are good but we use way too much. Corn and soybeans is most commonly used in food 90% of the time. High fructose corn syrup is used in things like soda a lot of it too. Or it can be in cereal or candy. But High fructose corn syrup can cause heart disease, obesity, cancer, Dementia, liver failure, tooth decay, and more. This can damage us really bad.
Well at first no one ever paid attention to the food labels. And if they didn’t add it to the food labels that could be a problem. They kept that secret to make more money rather than lose more money. Money revolves around everything. And the food like corn can help make more money for the company and the government.
When you're on your diet you want to know what’s in your food. Like fat and how many calories and all that kind of stuff. Well what about chemicals that can harm your body.
I think both because we should always bother to check what’s in our food because we won’t always get the message from the company’s that produce it, or the government telling us what’s in our food. So people should make sure they check the labels if you are on a diet or just don’t want to eat anything disgusting in it. It’s also our responsibility to check the labels and to take care of our body so we don’t become overweight or get type 2 diabetes.
It is both our and the producer’s responsibility to know and to tell us what is in our food we eat or drink everyday. This sets the responsibility in the middle position for everybody. One is that it is are chose to eat what we want which is the main reason that people tend to be overweight. They either don’t look what is on the label or it’s not too clear which isn’t an excuse. And the producers should make their labels much clearer.

It gives you a picture with labels saying what happens when mothers who are pregnant eat genetically modified food. The scientist have found GE insecticides in corn, that is showing up in mothers umbilical cords of women that are pregnant. This is why it’s important to have products labeled genetically modified food.

ReplyDeleteIn the film, food science professor Larry Johnson says, “If you go and look on
the supermarket shelf, I’ll bet you 90 percent of the products would contain
either a corn or soybean ingredient. And most of the time, it’ll contain both.” If corn is found in almost every food out there and it produces e.coli it can turn into something a lot worse than it really is. E. coli is a bacteria that can kill a person and its found in a lot of meat. If we were to feed cows grass and not corn then maybe our meat wouldn't have a dangerous side effect.
Corn doesn't seem like the type of thing that would show up in most foods, it's the kind of food that you would choose as a side not thinking its actually used as something big. Learning that corn was in so much of our food really shocked me because theres so many other things out there that you think would be chosen over corn. when you think corn you don't think it could produce a dangerous bacteria.
I would have never known about the corn problem if it wasn't for Food Inc. it really showed me what was in my food and how its made. Food producers don’t show that they use corn by putting a label on it, you have to look into the ingredient. I wonder if the food was cooked all the way if the e. coli would still be such a big problem
Corn being in products isn't something very pronounced, its kind of hidden, because they don't want people to worry about getting the e. coli in them. Not many users would think that corn is in batteries or diapers, but it is. No one knows anything about the effects of corn on a human. They don't want them to worry about the dangerous side effect of the food they're giving them and them not eat it.
I wasn't too afraid of not knowing what was in my food until i started hearing about e. coli, its really made me more aware about what i eat and what's in my food. People usually think if its at the grocery store it's okay to eat, but they don't really know what is really in there food or what they will be eating.
The government should really be telling us what's in our food, because if we get killed or injured by it the economy will go down because we won't buy the food anymore and they won't profit from the money the company is making.
I think its both of our responsibilities, because consumers should know what they're buying and what's in it, but the producers should be telling you how they are making their food and they should make it clean, because if the meat isn't clean then they won't keep profiting from the money you give them, because they won't be getting it anymore.

ReplyDelete’ I don’t think it’s fair to be eating shady products that we don’t know the truth about. How are we to know the difference between a cloned piece of chicken or a healthy, farm-raised one that we eat? It’s scary to not be able to know what’s in our food, and if or if not there are any harmful ingredients/chemicals placed in the foods we eat.The responsibility of this issue should be the govenments’, they represent the people and when they allow genetically modified and unhealthy foods to be permitted and sold around the US it makes us wonder how well they are really representing us. People being killed by E Coli poisoning in meats and salmonella found in tomatoes, and other produce we eat is scary and unsafe. We are supposed to trust that the government will make the right decisions for us and it’s hard to when the one’s responsible for our safety are not keeping us safe. Big companies should feel responsibility too for the wellness of their customers and making sure the food they serve them is quality food. If I were a worker in a factory or even the CEO I would try and stop the producing of ransom meat. Our diet’s have definitely been modified, we are what we eat, literally. The cow or fish is given corn, we eat the cow or fish. It’s as simple as that. A cow raised on grass, sheds e coli naturally, therefore; we don not get e coli poisoning from the animal. It sure is scary to go to our local grocery store, after watching the video and realizing that most of the things, Mom just put in our cart are the last thing from natural, even if the label doesn’t say it, it still could. Labels lie, so companies lie, so the government lies. Who can we to trust about what’s really in our food, and what can we do?
I think we were all so surprised because our food industries were selling that it is healthy and consumable to eat, which it was not. I think the government and food producers have kept a big secret of what we are eating. We should have the right to know what we are eating, if we don't know it can be very dangerous. Most people do not know this fact because they want to believe what the food industries have said about their food and don't want to take a second look at what their eating. I feel that ingredients being included that I don't know of is kind of scary. What if the ingredients in your food give you an allergic reaction and you don't know what it is because it is not listed in the food contents or its not recognizable. So the food industry is responsible for that but is not recognized for what they did wrong. I think that it is not only the food companies job but also the governments job to tell us what's in our food. But, its not only the governments and the food companies job to tell us what's in our food but also its our job to take a second look at the food label and double check what is in our food that we are consuming. The consequences of different spectrum is that when you consume the unknown ingredients in your food there is a higher chance that you will become ill, and eventually die. Also, there are bad consequences for the food industries, they should get sued and shut down but they have links with the judges and don't get shut down.If people are responsible for informing themselves about what is in their food, the food industries should make it easier to read food labels to be more informed. If producers are responsible a more effective way to inform people is to have them take a look at the industries or advertise what they do with their animals. If cows and now fish are consuming corn thats scary because that is not what they are supposed to eat. Now people are eating like cows and fish thats odd so yes i think that our diets have been modified in the same way. I feel betrayed that my food has been modified without me knowing, because if we don't know and were consuming corn that is used in cows and fish as a steroid for animals to make them grow then are we on a type of steroid too ?

ReplyDeleteIt might be a problem that most of our food contains corn and/or soybeans because its not healthy to be eating the same foods, we need to have variety in our diet. It is unhealthy to be eating the same thing over and over again. Also we don't know what the corn and soybeans have been through. They could have been sprayed or soaked in a chemical or chemicals that can be later found to be harmful to us and its in so much of our food. Another thing is there could be some type of bug or pest on the plant and isn't discovered till after we have consumed that plant or food that contains the plant.
I think we were so surprised to hear that corn is very prevalent in our food because the food companies have hide this from us. I think the food companies don't tell many people that they use corn a lot because if we know then we might stop buying their food and then they will run out of business because they aren't making any money. Also they don't tell us because they think that the food is harmful and that its safe to eat and if they tell us we might start to think that its not safe and we shouldn’t be eating it.
I feel that ingredients should not be included in our diet without our knowledge because we have the right to know. Some companies might say that a product is healthy but there is an ingredient that isn’t good for you but they don’t tell you that because they want you to think that there product is healthy and that you should consume it. I think we should be able to look at the ingredients and know what is in our food and understand what an ingredient is without having to look it up.
I think it is the food producers to inform us about what is in our food, it shouldn’t be our job to find out ourselves. We should be able to look on a food label and know what is in our food and not have their be an ingredient that we dont know what is so we have to look it up, they should just tell us.
Along a spectrum, on one end theres people who feel it is the individuals’ responsibility to inform themselves about what is in their food. I think the people on this end are wrong because the problem with finding out information yourself is you could find false information and then think a food is good for you when its really not.
If people are responsible for informing themselves a way to help them would be to not have so much false information going around. If the producers are responsible for informing us a more effective way to inform people about what is in there food would be to not have as many big and confusing words on food labels.
I think people’s diet has been modified in a similar way to the way cows and farm-raised fishes diet has. I think our food should not be modified without us knowing. We have the right to know/

Most of the food sold in supermarkets contain a soybean and/or cor ingredient. I think we are depending too much on these two products. Larry Johnson thinks that 90% of the food on the shelves contain one or both of these ingredients. That means that most of the food we eat contains this product. Our bodies need more diversity when it comes to food in order to stay healthy. If we eat too much of the same product then our bodies will start to depend on always having it in our system. We do not want this in case the product becomes unavailable.
I think that most of us were surprised by how many things have corn in them and because they were products like, things like yogurt and diapers that popped up on the screen and they don’t seem like items that have corn in them. There were so many of them as well. It was shocking to see how much of what we eat is from the same product. I do not think that government and food producers have the right to hide what we are putting into our bodies. They sell the products to us and we should know what we are buying. If someone were to be deathly allergic to any ingredient in a food they eat it could be very dangerous to their bodies and might even kill them. It is our bodies that the food is going into and we should be cautious of the foods we out into it in order to maintain our health. I think that the food producers and government have probably some of the ingredients a secret and that isn’t right.
I don’t think it is right to hide wait is in the product that the consumer is buying and eating. However, I think that if it is on the label in some form or another, it is all right. If the buyer really wanted to know exactly what some ingredients are and where they come from, then they could research the ingredients and where they are from.
I think it is the company’s responsibility to inform the consumers of what is in their food. If you buy it, you should know what is in it without having to investigate the ingredients. How would they figure it out if they had to? Would people have to run to a lab and analyse the contents of their fries before eating them? It just is not logical. If a consumer is paying good money to buy a product then they should know exactly what they’re are buying and manufacturers should not have the right to hide the ingredients. If something was in the food that the buyer didn’t know about, and they were allergic to the ingredient there could be serious health problems. Again, I think it would just be so much easier if the manufacturers would stand by their products and inform people of what they contain.

ReplyDeleteIf producers were to label their products with every single thing in their food people might not want to buy their products. Although, companies could just put better and healthier ingredients in that they would be proud to stand behind. If individuals were responsible for finding out what is in their food, they might figure out more than if the product was just labeled with the ingredients in the first place because a lot of people don't bother to look at the label when they eat something. This would also lead to people not wanting to buy the product. I think that some kind of middle ground needs to be met here. I think that the producers need to label every product with the ingredients and how it is made. The consumers need to pay attention and read these labels every time they eat a product. This way the responsibility is on both the producers and the consumers shoulders.
If people were responsible for informing themselves of the foods they are eating, I think that there should be a department or organization where you can find out ingredients of food. But if you think about this, How would we pay for it? There would need to be people working and helping the consumers figure out everything in their food. The wages for these helpers along with the cost of resources would be too expensive to run properly and it would be a lot more efficient if the producers would just honestly print the ingredients and how the food is processed on the actual product. If people were responsible for informing the people they sell their products to then chances are that the consumers wouldn’t want to buy the product anymore. No matter, the companies need to “bite the bullet” and stand behind the products that they are shoving down our throats. They need to show people what is really in their food, or change the ingredients and how they process the food because it is just not alright to hide what is in the food they are selling.
I think that our eating habits have changed like the cows’ have and it has gone in a bad direction. People used to eat homegrown food and raise their own farm animals to eat. There used to be little to no preservatives in all the food we eat and now you can’t find anything that doesn’t contain at least a few of them. I think that it is ok for our foods to be modified but the companies should inform the consumers of how and why the food was modified. This way the people have the option to buy modified food if they don’t care, or they could just find food that isn’t genetically modified. Although, I don’t think it is ok to just put genetically modified ingredients into the food we eat without us knowing it. It is our bodies and we should have the right to know what is in the food we put into them.
