ReplyDeleteIn the film “The Weight of the Nation” one main problem that was highlighted was school lunches. There were two statistics that really summed the problem up. About 88.9% of parents think school lunches are healthy, but about 94% of school lunches failed to meet the standards. There is obviously a huge disconnect happening here. Parents believe that their son or daughter is eating healthy at school, but really they are not. So there are two ways to solve this problem as I see it. First, all the parents’ eyes can be opened to exactly how unhealthy school lunches really are. That will most likely cause them to make their child bring their own lunch from home. Assuming that the students’ lunch from home is healthier than school lunch, this is a good solution because the students are eating healthier and the schools can cut down on spending for lunches. The second solution I see, is fixing the school lunches, which is a bit more tricky. Schools already have a limited budget to try and operate with, and factoring in a nutritious food program is very difficult to accomplish. But straightening out the school lunches has its benefits. Teachers may see more focused students and better test results in the long run. However, the best solution I see is to combine both of these. Upgrade the school lunches and inform the parents. Also, it will be very influential to the students to have health classes where the students learn about this problem just like here at Foothill.

Help the Children
The “Weight of the Nation” video discussed the topic of children obesity. There are many factors that come into play, about this topic. Advertising, family finances, economical, school lunches, school curriculum and the fact that the government is not helping. Children should not be in the health crisis that they are, they should has the liberties to live healthy. The video stated that the weight of the nation is out of control, also that the era we live in, will later on be known as the obesity era. Kids shouldn't have to live this way, no one should.
Economical, and the family's financial state, are a fairly large role in child obesity. If the family is in poverty, or with a low/scarce income, the parents get the cheapest food to feed their children. Which sends them straight to fast food restaurants with dollar menus and fast cheap food. Meals there have such large caloric value, one burger could be up to half the daily value. While on the food topic, school lunches. 94% of school lunches fail to meet USDA standards. In fact school lunches can be so unhealthy that they leave kids more exhausted and fatigued. Schools really need to have healthy food available, and actually make their lunches standardized from the USDA. 5 states, in the US don't even require physical education as a part of the curriculum. That is outrageous.
The government is not helping to fix the weight of the nation. $1.5 billion is used on food advertising and marketing. Most of which are aimed for children. Food marketers do not want to change because they have a higher income. Why not use that money for help have better foods for families and children. It is all about how much everyone else is willing to help. The weight of the nation is in our hands, and the hands of our children. All we have to do to fix it is help, to reach out and make an effort.

ReplyDeleteAs pertaining to the video Children In Crisis, school lunches are not very good in terms of being healthy. The meals given to children are not healthy because they come with these side items like sodas, chips, and cookies, and all of these things that are full of sugar and fats. They say they serve “healthy fruit juices,” but the facts say otherwise. For a start at the sodas, 12 ounces of soda can contain 10 teaspoons of sugar. But then look at their juices. An estimated 12 ounces of orange juice can contain 8 teaspoons of sugar and 12 ounces of grape juice can contain 10 teaspoons of sugar. Also, the other alternatives to just these juices and sugar are only chocolate milk and water. But even there, the sugar isn’t on the rise.
As to the school lunches, there are just foods that are shipped frozen then defrosted and given to the children. They are even given out in great portions, not moderate portions. Each meal is created in a factory, and then reheated in the school kitchens. These meals are also slightly over-charged, even though they are probably made with ease and no costly fees to produce. The school and the companies creating the food are each making a profit, with no idea of the consequences towards the students, and maybe some teachers that eat school lunches.
On an opinionated base, I have eaten school lunches since I was in kindergarten. But changes have always been made. I remember in elementary school they used to give out fruits and vegetables of the months. I loved that, until they stopped that and gave more junk out. It was good at the time, but it took a toll to me. Luckily my brother and sister weren’t sucked into it like most people I knew.

Hello there fellow citizens of the United States, I am here today stating that probably a good percentage of whoever is reading this is either obese or overweight. This has been the dilemma in the United States for a couple of years now and there's a couple of problems and solutions that should be addressed. Many problems were shown in the video Children in Crisis and here is a little summary of some important stuff. The big one is that there is many kids who are overweight and have a greater risk for diabetes or obesity. Many kids of the age range of 10-12 have Type 2 Diabetes, which was uncommon back then but its common now. Studies show that food marketing affects what they want to eat which is dangerous because they're usually unhealthy products. School lunches are also very unhealthy because they are usually processed food. To top it off only about 5 states in the United States require Physical Education and the rest are optional or don't have P.E. at all. It is know that if you do P.E. you will get money back from your health insurance because you are being healthier. Obesity will crush the U.S. if we don't do something about it and we need to help our future not end up obese. So they won't live a less healthy and shorter life. The point of this video was pretty much to see the things that will affect us in the long run. If our generation doesn't do anything about it they will end up being obese and overweight. All we can do is try to get them to eat healthier foods and to eat less of the processed fat unhealthy foods.

ReplyDeleteChallenges
One of the more interesting challenges that I saw in the film was the ‘zipcode matters more than genetic code’. The problem here was that poor neighborhoods tended to have a shorter life expectancy than more wealthy neighborhoods. The less fortunate people, or the people living in the poor neighborhoods couldn’t do much to change their situation. Their only option was to buy unhealthy food because it was cheaper than healthier fresh food. Also, there are less parks and places to exercise or workout around where they live. One way to fix this problem is to increase the demand for fresh produce. Right now, the reason why fresh vegetables and fruit are more expensive than a bag of Doritos is because there is just not much of a market for them. This brings us to another challenge. There are no incentives for fruit and vegetable growers. We can fix this problem by buying more of their produce and creating a demand. The farmers grow more, and the prices come down, so it can be more available to low income families. To solve the exercise part of the zipcode problem, I would suggest making streets and sidewalks more pedestrian friendly. Maybe add an extra lane for runners and bicycle riders or something. This is a relatively new challenge, and we as a nation need to overcome it now, rather than later. Creating support groups or exercise groups is a good step, but we are going to need a nationwide movement to change this. Raising awareness is where it all starts.

Challenges
Many people cannot afford healthy food for their families, so instead resort to fast food. Fast food is very high in calories and fat, and definitely contributes to obesity. It is challenging to eat healthy all the time because healthy food is often very expensive. Healthy food only receives a 10 percent profit, while fast food easily gets double that. This means that fast food can be cheaper while healthy food has to be more expensive to make an exceptional profit.
So let’s talk about the people that contribute to this. First off, you have the big scary corporate people from the board who are in charge of the big picture, then you have the farmers, most of whom are under control by the corporate people and are forced to used non-traditional methods of farming. Then you have the farmers separate from the big picture, who do their best to gather a reasonable crop and sell it to markets in hope of a profit. Then you have the consumers, who are almost forced to buy fast food because it is inexpensive, instead of healthy food that is expensive.
Solutions to this problem seem like they would be so simple but require lots of extra players and resources. All humans have to eat, even if what they are eating is considered unhealthy, like fast food. There simply needs to be more farmers working together to pump out healthy crops to markets selling the crops for less cost, while more people decide to eat healthy.

Children in Crisis
I think school lunches are a curse and a blessing. They save time, but fail to provide nutrition. At most schools, kdis are given an option, meaning that they don’t have to take the healthier option, and will go for the junk food. People have been complaining about junk food in schools for quite a while now, but haven’t taken any action about it. If the kids are only given the one semi-healthy option, it will definitely cut down the amount of junk food kids eat at school, however, they can’t be stopped from using their lunch money to buy chips and soda at a gas station outside the school.
At Foothill, I would say that the P.E. is pretty vigorous and makes us work pretty hard. However, at Middle School, the P.E. was pointless. You didn’t have to work very hard at all, and then every couple weeks you had to “run” (as in you could walk and make time) a mile in fifteen minutes. I think that the intensity of P.E. in Middle School and Elementary School needs to be intensified and given more thought then it is getting now. P.E. at Middle School was basically a joke.
I think that activites outside of school should definitely be considered by parents. An hour and a half at basketball practice is ninety minutes less T.V. and junk food. I think that activities outside of school are a great alternative for T.V. and help kids stay healthy.

Children in Crisis
In America today, the number of child obesity is increasing. More than 18% of children are obese, and a third of those children will develop diabetes in their lives. I cannot believe how large the numbers for obese children are. I am even more astonished by the causes of this crisis. School lunches, physical education in school, and activities outside of school are the main causes.
School lunches play a big part in this obesity crisis. The foods we are given in schools are all generally unhealthy. Children are rarely offered vegetables at school, and when the vegetables are offered, they are sitting right next to a hamburger or pizza. The beverages served in school are even worse. Sugary beverages are the largest source of sugar in a child’s diet. These facts lead me to start watching not only what I eat, but what I drink as well. Physical education in schools is worse. Only 1 out of 6 schools require physical education 3 times a week. I did not know that the number was this low considering all of the different schools I went to that all had physical education.
Activities children have outside of school are also bad. Some neighborhoods don’t have parks for the children to play in. Also, students just want to stay indoors, playing videogames or watching TV. TV is another main cause for obesity because the viewer is just sitting on one spot and being exposed to unhealthy food advertisements.

The Downfall of the Nation
As you already know, America’s children are the future citizens of the United States of America and they will shape the way our society continues to grow and progress. To have healthy kids to later run this nation, they must have healthy food to eat, and a lot of the food they consume is at school so school lunches need to be healthy. With this being said, 94 percent of schools served food that failed to meet FDA regulations. This problem will result in a long chain reaction causing many future problems. For example, it is projected that there will be a full on chronic liver disease in this generation of children by the time they are in their thirties if things continue. It is common sense that food in schools needs to be more healthy. Additionally, with a large portion of a child’s time being spent at school, physical fitness must take place in the schools to have healthy students. Also, studies have shown that physical fitness improves brain development and the students will learn more. We all share in this responsibility to make our nation more healthy to thrive and prosper. So, if only the schools are trying to be healthier, it will not solve the obesity problem because only ten percent of parents seek medical attention for their child’s obesity. Activities outside of schools can’t be controlled and many kids have unhealthy habits at home such as watching television before going to sleep and this has been shown to cause a gain in weight.

ReplyDeleteAt schools all across the nation children are taught to eat healthy and to make healthy choices. However school lunches, which many students take part of, are usually unhealthy and disgusting. How is it that lunches in prisons contain more nutrients than the food the children throughout the nation eat? I feel that one way we can stop the obesity epidemic is to target the food children eat at school. If schools start to make everything homemade again, instead of the frozen food that they currently buy from big companies, children will begin to eat the school lunches. this means that when they get home instead of eating a big meal they will grab a light snack. this also means that when they get home they might have more energy so they will go outside and play instead of sitting indoors all day. Also instead of just lecturing children about being healthy schools could have a day were the kids all bring some kind of healthy food and they could have a big healthy potluck. Having something like that will get the children excited about eating healthy because it will give them an opportunity to share with each other. Also, some kids might look at it as an opportunity to get out of class but in reality its showing them all the different healthy foods that they could then bring into their own homes so they may begin eating healthier at home as well as at school.

ReplyDeleteIn the Challenges video, people were faced with the challenge of fighting off all these junk foods, whether it be they try and get daily exercise, or they try and avoid these bad foods on their daily commute.
People don’t usually like to exercise daily. It’s not much of a necessity next to eating, work, and sleep, but it should be. Less than 5% of adults get and physical activity.
When it comes to fast food, the average person would probably go with it as a daily routine due to the large portions and the quick service it provides. Projected numbers say that by the year 2030, 32%-50% of Americans will become obese. Also, diabetes is on the rise. A recent study shows that 40% of Americans die of diabetes. In America, $150 billion is spent in obesity cases. Also, $70 billion is spent on healthcare due to obesity. This is one major challenge: people who cannot pay for healthcare or even pay for food so this is just another problem along with this challenge.
Also, childhood obesity is very bad because it is not looked at well. A study shows children consume 7.5 hours of media a day. Only 10% of parents seek help for their obese child(s). In Orange County, kids play in empty parking lots because the city won’t build a park for the kids. But a group of women in a neighborhood have tried and succeeded in getting a permit to the construction of the park they have been trying to create. This is one small win to the challenge.

ReplyDeleteThe obesity epidemic that is currently sweeping the nation is getting uglier and uglier. Even though fat does not look appealing on people, it’s not just the appearance that bothers us, it’s also the effects too. Because we lost the control of obesity in America, ⅓ of children born in 2000 were likely to get diabetes and this will be the first generation to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. Obesity is taking over the human race and school lunches, physical activity in schools, and activities outside of school aren’t helping at all to save us.
I remember entering into school trying to avoid consuming cafeteria food because I saw a TV show that put a negative connotation on school lunches. The show displayed cafeteria food as alive and monstrous, gross and unappetizing, and the cafeteria employees weren’t the politest people either. For all of elementary school I brought my own lunch. At schools today, chicken nuggets can bounce and pizza is spray on cheese and rubber. Who would want to eat that? Children avoid eating these foods, much like I did, and they end up unfed and unfed children are notorious for having behavior problems. Luckily, the government stepped in and passed the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act, which raises the nutritional values required in school lunches. Thank you government!
The physical education provided at schools isn’t helping children at all, either. First of all, physical education is barely present in school requirements. 1 in 6 schools require PE 3 days a week. Our school only requires PE for 2 years (as long as you’re passing the fitness test). If children aren’t doing PE, not only is there no one but themselves to help them with their weight issue, but it’s even damaging the chances of solving the obesity epidemic. No PE in schools is hurting children.
Lastly, the activities outside of school are also hurting the children. Were you aware that having a television in your bedroom is known to lead to obesity. Imagine coming home from a day of school, which is PE-less, and then plopping down on your bed and watching TV, then sleep, wake up, repeat. How awful does that sound? While the kids are watching the television they are also looking at the commercials, which influence the foods they should eat.
In conclusion, because of the horrible school lunches, the lack of required physical education in schools, and the poor activities students choose to do after school, obesity in children becomes worse. As a parent, today or in the future, you need to help your child. Take away the TV, no more soda, or simply have them walk to school like the other 20% of children. Only 10% of parents seek help for obese children. Let’s make that number rocket up high and save the world!

In this video, it was widely shown that the obesity in children was a nationwide epidemic. There are many contributions to this cause. One of them might be what they are serving for lunch and breakfast at schools. 88.6 percent of parents think that school food is very or somewhat healthy, they couldn't be more wrong. 97 percent of schools did not pass for the Healthy Food Programs. What the schools feed America’s children should be the healthier than any other resteraunt or home meal. School is a place where children learn, and we should be teaching our kids to eat healthy. Another contributor could be what fitness programs are offered at schools. Only 8 percent of elementary schools, 6.4 percent of middle schools, and 5.8 percent of high schools has physical fitness programs. And to top it all off 20 percent of schools have taken away recess to increase classroom time. It was shown that physical exercise improves brain activity and also improves mood, so kids can be more enthusiastic when going to school. Kids that exercise are less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol. The kids who do exercise will have stronger muscles and stronger bones. For kids who do not exercise, and excess of just 500 calories equals to 1 pound of weight gain a week. It is evident that if we do not increase the amount of physical education in kids, that America will be a country of obese children.

Kids and adults who need help, why? Well 18% of kids have obesity, ⅔ of american's become obese and from today ages from 10-12 developed type 2 diabetes when becoming obese.Kids or Adults are overweight or either have obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and craving fast food.Knowing what’s been going on it makes you want to figure out a way to help. Some people say “when you look at me you just don’t see me, you see me overweight”, or when they say they're ok but really they're not, well maybe we can change that .I think since these kids are sick, they should still feel confident on how they feel.As for that 10% of parents seek for help for their obese child, they try to make them eat healthy, excersise more, things that they should be doing.
Basically kids who have obese start to have obese when their older. These people are in a higher risk of getting diabetes, heart disease, asthma and a variety of health problems.Although it helps a little for people to exercise more, but since the mayor did that challenge it makes people want to go outside and walk to places. However now in days its hard for to combat against the t.v. of what you want to buy for the kids.Although right now their are cheap food models and that is where our problem is.By the time passes by the day 12/2/10 the congress passed the healthy-hungry kids act.

Children In Crisis
One of the biggest problems we are facing today is child obesity. Child obesity has been tripling over the past years, and will keep increasing if we don’t do something to stop it. Obesity is becoming an epidemic because 1 in 3 kids in 2000 will develop diabetes from eating unhealthy food. Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes are starting to be common in children, because they live an unhealthy lifestyle. In past years doctors would only see Type 2 Diabetes in adults but now they are starting to see diabetes in children that are 12.
A contributing factor to child obesity is the school lunches they give at some schools. The lunches contribute to obesity because in some schools kids can buy slices of pizza, hamburgers and other foods that are unhealthy for them. At schools like these, kids basically have fast food restaurants in their cafeteria, which is a bad things because fast food restaurants are unhealthy. Since the food the cafeterias are serving are so unhealthy for the students most of the students that buy school lunches are overweight or obese.
At the cafeterias of some schools they basically have small businesses that sell unhealthy food. Most of the kids at these schools probably buy their own lunch which means they buy from the unhealthy stands there is in the cafeteria. Schools shouldn’t allow small businesses sell unhealthy food to their students. Because of the school lunches and the cafeterias that have small businesses the obesity rate in children has increased.

The first problem that we are facing is is obesity. It is becoming an epidemic because one in three children in 2000 will develop diabetes from eating unhealthy foods. This is a huge problem because then there will be lots of health care costs when they get older.
The foods at schools has also been a contributing factor because there are so many kids going to some of the schools that they need an efficient way to feed them all. Some schools have unhealthy foods just because it is the only thing that kids will eat that is fast enough for the kids to get lunch in the time provided. This is a problem because they get stressed out from not having the right amount of time to eat their unhealthy food. One child was explaining how he didn't like the pizza from school because it took ten napkins to clean the grease off which is in my mind as well as many others, is not healthy to anyone. I think that if there was more healthy food in schools it would help the overall obesity rates because most people eat at least one meal a day at their school five days a week. if the food was more healthy then kids would learn better and have more energy to play and lose weight. if this continues to have unhealthy food in school then people will continue to see the rates of obesity grow.

It sickens me that 18% of children are obese. The media has made a huge impact on society and it makes me melancholy that things aren't they way they used to be. More and more people are on their smartphones, computers, or watching television for hours, rather than taking a walk outside, reading, drawing, etc. I am included in this group, and I really don’t want to be. Whenever I start to do something on my phone, it pulls me in and I can’t stop. Having these devices increases obesity rates because rather than being active, the body itself is doing absolutely nothing. Usually, people will get junk food along with watching television, which adds to more unhealthy habits. Last winter, I dropped my phone in the snow and it stopped working. At first, it was like having withdrawal. But after a few weeks without having it, I felt free and not taken over by technology. I can see the world starting to relate to Brave New World by Aldous Huxley because people are getting their lives taken over by technology, but they let it happen because it is out of pleasure. It is the same with eating unhealthy, cheap food that the nation has come to love.
This generation of children is the first who will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents, and one in three children born in 2000 will eventually develop diabetes. This is obviously a huge problem and it seems to me that if everyone didn't make healthy changes to their lifestyle, the population would become highly endangered over many years. Many children of this generation that will grow to be grandparents, might not even get to see their grandchildren because they will not live to their grandchild’s birth. There should be local speakers who talk to children and parents about health so the nation is more aware of this crisis.

Obviously, obesity is a problem that is sweeping the nation. I mean 18% percent of children in america today are obese. All these children are in health dangers. They are at a higher risk of; having elevated insulin, also they have the physical characteristics and problems that a 25 year old person would, but at the age of like 9,10, and 11.
About half of the teenage girls in america are obese. A big part in these statistics is the fact that there is high advertising of fattening foods. You see it on television, and they make it seem so good. That you subconsciously want it, without even really thinking about it you are practically craving that food.
1/3 of americans today are either obese, and another third are overweight . Being able to eat whatever you want is glorious. The problem comes into play when our society is shaped around the all the fattening foods and drinks which are causing this obesity epidemic. It is like a everlasting cycle.
In a low income area, parents work, get little pay. Then, they have a decision to make, do they buy healthy foods to build nice strong children, or do they pull through a drive thru and feed their family an abundance of food. Hmmmm, I wonder which one they will choose. THE FAST FOOD!! Its a cycle, low income, dollar menu, kids over-eat, two hours later, they are hungry, and then, they return to the dollar menu. These companies are counting on this very predicament for business.

It’s really not that surprising that 18.1% of children are obese. School lunches, physical education in schools, and activities done outside of school contribute to obesity in children. School lunches may look and taste disgusting, they also are high in calories. The amount of vegetables and fruits one child gets might be enough, but who says that the child will eat it? Schools could find another way for vegetables to taste and look appealing to kids someway. I know it’ll be hard, but it’s not impossible. I don’t think schools should be selling that many unhealthy snacks. There are alternatives like fruit, granola, healthy chips, endless things. It would be hard because for some of us it’s not normal for us not to eat cookies or chips during break and lunch. I know I’m not the healthiest eater but I manage to try to have healthier alternatives most of the time. If we start teaching kids how to eat healthier younger, it’ll create good habits that will follow them until they’re older. I originally thought every school has P.E. most of the time. Can’t schools at least take 30 minutes off to walk or run outside if they don’t have any space to have P.E.? There’s been studies showing that having P.E. can help in academics. Maybe it’s because kids have energy to burn off so they’re not so irritating during class. What kids do outside of school does have an effect in their health. A kid who does sports outside of school may be healthier than a kid who only plays video games with no physical activity. I think children should at least take 60 minutes to go outside to walk, run, do anything to get exercise. It’s only an hour, some kids spend all day listening to music doing nothing, might as well walk or run with your music. Also, people should just eat healthier snacks while watching T.V. instead of chips. There is room for change.

-Challenges
One of the challenges that we have is that we were made to turn down food. In the past, we used to grow or hunt our own food and it took a lot of labor to do so. We had to have extra calories to survive. Now, we have an abundance of food that we could buy. The companies, spend so much money advertising so we could buy their product. Everyone knows if something looks and sounds appealing, someone is going to buy it. It’s really us, the consumers, against the companies. They put our favorite celebrities, characters, etc. on their product so we can buy it. Adults can handle some of the ads because they know what’s really in the product. Kids, though, if they see something they want, they want it now. Parents want to give everything to their child so most of the time they buy the unhealthy product for their kid. Sometimes, we want to join in the bandwagon since everyone is buying one product so we have to buy it too. There’s consumers, endorsers, and companies who make the product. We could limit ads on T.V., magazines, etc. and have more appealing ads on healthier products. For the consumers, this would be a good thing. Maybe healthier eating for consumers. Endorsers could still get payed for supporting a healthier option. For companies that make healthier products and are getting more publicity is a good thing for them. The companies who are selling unhealthy products and have to limit their ads, they would be furious since they want to make profit. This may be a good thing to do.

Obesity became a huge problem for children here in America. About 18 percent of children are obese which is a big increase from the last decade. This is a result of bad eating habits and lack of exercise. Studies show that 1/3 of children born in the 2000’s will form diabetes sometime. I was shocked to find this out. Children that are obese are at risk of diabetes and heart disease. Knowing this upset be because these are not problems that young children should have to worry about and like the video stated; these kinds of diseases were never expected to be found in children they are kinds that an adult would deal with later on in their life for bad health choices.
Children that have a television their room are more likely become obese. Kids now crave big macs oppose to vegetables like carrots. I believe the commercials are the blame for this. Commercials show that it’s cool to drink soda or that eating a big mac is the greatest thing ever. Commercials exaggerate and children are young, they don’t any better but to want bad food because their brains are developing, they see and learn for the tv. Half a billion dollars are spent in these commercials and even more is spent for the downfall(paying for medicines that families can’t afford to treat diabetes and obesity). The government shouldn’t allow this.
Companies are also the the blame for child obesity. Lots claim to be healthy but really aren't and can confuse people who are trying to look for healthier food. I was surprised to find out that 94% of school foods did not meet the healthy standards. This was ironic to me because school are always telling kids to eat healthier and exercise but they are helping contribute to obesity. School’s also drooped PE, 1/6 of schools actually require it 3 times a week. I don’t think this was very smart because physical exercise is said to improve the brain for learning. Kids being less active is bad because now they have to be extra careful with what they eat and in this world we live in today it makes it almost impossible. Nothing good comes of eating unhealthy but only making the companies richer.People need to come together as a country and stand against fast food.

PE(Physical Education) in Schools plays a key role in weather or not our children are going to learn to grow up healthy and happy, or if our children are going to grow up overweight and unhappy. In the film CIC(Children In Crisis) I learned that only 5 different states have made PE mandatory (Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Mexico, and Vermont), in all grade levels. That is only 10 Percent of our Nation!! No wonder obesity rates for children have tripled within the past 3 decades. PE plays a strong key role in our obesity epidemics and should be required in every state. For some families, it is the only exercise their kids get either during the day or even at all!! If PE was required by the government in every state regardless of grade levels, then no longer is it costing you money to constantly tend to your hurt/obese children, but it is better for your kids ability to actually want to go outside and have fun!! Also it makes the kids feel alot better about themselves and they are willing to go out and do more fun things/family activities. PE also impacts the ability of you growing up Obese and living a shorter life, or growing up strong and healthy and living a happier healthy life. It is said that we are the first generation that is expected for our parents to outlive us, which is sad but PE is taking one step closer to making that observation invalid.

This might be the first generation in which kids have a shorter lifespan than their parents, and the main reason why is obesity. Child obesity has tripled over the past three decades and only 10% of the parents seek for help. There are many things that can lead up to a child becoming overweight, like not being physically active outside of school. Many kids have a TV in their room, which is a distraction from being physically active. TVs also advertise many fast foods which the kids usually crave. That leads to the parents buying their kids the food that they see on TV, because usually the kid will ask for it and/or put on a fit if the parents refuse, until the parents finally give in. The kids are not always the ones that choose what food to eat by looking at the advertisements, many times the parents are the ones that choose to buy from fast food restaurants because of how cheap the food is and how easy it is to access it. It has gone from having a TV in each room being normal to obesity becoming the “norm” for many people. Unless, you and your kids have very good self control, you should probably consider having only one TV (the best place would probably be the living room), buying a TV program with no commercials (that way food advertisements won't be seen; Netflix, Blockbuster), or maybe even not having a TV at all. Another alternative is to get your kid a game console that involves exercise, for example the Wii Fit or the Xbox Kinect. Or you could always just take your kids out to play in a park, skate, bike ride, etc. ⅓ of children born in the years of 2000 will most likely develop obesity and/or diabetes, if you don't want your kids that ⅓ , its time to take action.

Challenges
The video stated that there are a handful of challenges that are cause and effect of the obesity era we live in. In the 1900’s the health service started tracking causes of death, and showed that the obesity epidemic started in the 1980’s. The environment we live in, and the way people live, exposes them to things that are bad for their health. In the last 100 years food has become industrialized, and restaurant portions have become 3 to 5 times larger, than in previous years. With technology advancing, the human race’s health is decreasing. Less than 3% of the US is farmland that is used for fruits and vegetables. The farmers that do grow fruit and vegetables barely get any support from the government compared to farmers of other demanded crops. The government paid farmers are even told to over-produce foods that are already making people fat. This is getting out of hand.
To me is not right for the government to be doing the things that they are doing. It is obviously not doing anything positive. Americas people are not healthy, they have diseases, they have illnesses, their obese, and their dying. 40% of deaths is because of diabetes, type 2 diabetes, the kind you get from being unhealthy. Wouldn't that be enough to stop and think, maybe we should do something about this? But it’s not, all the government cares about is profit, and money. we should embrace that 3% of farmland, stand up, and fight to be healthy. Fight to show what's right. Because I know, my children, and my grandchildren, will not live in an obesity era.

The challenge I chose to address is the challenge where it took a group of parents 7 years to get city permits to make a park. A park plays a very important role in getting children physically active outside of school, so in a way, parks help stop obesity in children. In Santa Ana, there are not enough places for parks, so the children have to play in parking lots or drive far away to play in a park which one child said that it wasn’t a very good park.
Some of the “players” in this challenge are the group of parents and the city officials. The group of parents is the people who want a park for children and the city officials are the people who took 7 years to give city permits to make a park. The “contributors” are again, the parents who worked to get the city permits to make the park. They contributed their time and effort to get their neighborhood a much needed park. The “participants” are the children who want and need the park to play in. They want the park for the fun of playing in a park and need it for physical activities. If they do not have a park, they have an increased chance of becoming obese when they are adults.
Cities should use their unused and unneeded spaces to make parks for children to play in. If cities could give away these spaces, then the child obesity epidemic would lower.

We all know that obesity has become a problem. Two out of three people are overweight. That is a very high percentage if you think about it. It’s sad that kids nowadays will probably have a shorter life span than their parents. It’s no surprise that child obesity has tripled over the past three decades. Everyday kids are bombarded with advertisements saying that their product is healthy and delicious when in reality it is just unhealthy and full of sugar. The school lunches are just as terrible. They’re pre-made and they are full with fat and sodium. Most kids don’t want to eat school lunches. When they asked parents how do they think their kids school lunches are made, most of them were shocked and disgusted. Plates with greasy “food” and unhealthy juices. The children are being exposed to unhealthy eating habits. Did you know that some schools have eliminated physical education? That’s just terrible. Kids need to be physically active. The children are facing a crisis with obesity. I can’t believe that even little kids have become obese! Michelle Obama is trying to help for obesity to stop. Every lunch now requires to have a fruit. There are many contributing factors to obesity besides school lunches and no physical education. Activities outside of school are contributing to obesity in children from 4-18 years old. Activities such as watching television. When watching television, most people consume food from the pantry which is usually unhealthy junk food or sugary beverages.

It is sad to think that 1/3 of Americans are overweight and that it is not only the person’s fault, but the result of many trends that come together. There are so many contributors to the obesity in America. More than 75 percent of American workers drive to work and children eat twice as much at a restaurant then they do at home. Obesity hasn't just hit adults, it is also spreading to children. Where you live matters and it matters a lot. A person’s environment can predict what type of lifestyle they are going to have. If they are in a secluded area where there is no sidewalks or parks, the chances of going for a walk or having your children playing outside is very slim. Research shows that 50 percent of philadelphia school kids go to corner stores everyday after school. Our lifestyle has adapted to our hostile environment. What is in our markets also affects what we eat. There have been an increase of fast food restaurants and an increase in soy and corn products. The kind of food we eat is made to be most profitable for the companies and not for your health. While there has been an increase on fast food restaurants, absolutely nothing has been left for fruits and vegetable farmers. Less than 3 percent of US farmland is used for fruits and vegetables. The profit margin for fresh foods is 10 percent while the profit margin for corn and soybean is around 40 percent.

People are getting more and more used to the lifestyle of fast food and drive thru. They understand the consequences but are not willing to change. and it is not only the adults who are struggling to keep their weight under control, 18% of children are obese. the parents are responsible for guarding their children from the ads and temptations of sugary high fat foods.
Its not only the adults who are at risk for diseases such as diabetes or any kind of health problem or risk. Children who are obese are more likely to have health problems. the most common type of diabetes in obese people is type 2. The companies have a very sly way of getting parents and their kids to think that their food is healthy. Mcdonalds has added a salad to their menu which would seem healthy yet has as many calories as a big mac! The healthiest way to go would to be just don't eat fast food at all. Yet for some people that is very close to impossible. The fast food companies put ingredients in their food that makes the hamburger like a cigarette. as unhealthy as one and as addicting as one. There are families out there who get very little pay and their only option is to eat fast food their other amount has to go to house payments and utilities. They don't get enough money to go to the farmers market or to the grocery store for fresher safer food. This is how obesity is started.

ReplyDeleteBeing obese leads to many obstacles you must jump in order to stay alive. From being obese you have a possibility of getting many deadly diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Also, temptations get in the way- you want to get healthy but all those temptation seem to hold you back, like food commercials and instead of watching those convincing commercials, you could exercise.
Obesity leads to many unwanted diseases that would probably never would've gotten into your system if you weren’t obese. This problem occurs because of you. You are the reason these diseases infect your body. The doctors and nurses can put you on pills, but no one will be as effective as you at destroying the diseases and becoming healthy.
One way to help you to stay healthy and not get infected by unwanted diseases is to resist temptations, especially by food commercials. In commercials the director makes everything look appetizing and sometimes even healthy, when in reality its not. Food marketing affects food preferences and what you eat. If there is a food commercial on Pop-Tarts and the voiceover says they’re delicious and a good source of every vitamin, there probably isn’t a lot of vitamins in them. But there commercial was fantastic and now you want to get them. That is a temptation. And avoiding these temptations are the perfect way to avoid the deadly diseases listed above.
To avoid temptations, you could exercise during the commercials if you’re watching television. Less than 5% of adults meet the minimum of required exercise to stay fit. 1 in 4 adults don’t even exercise at all. Do a couple pushups and situps during the commercials and turn away from the TV if you are still collapsing to the temptations.
In conclusion, to stay healthy in fit and not get unwanted and lethal diseases, resist the food marketing temptations and do something that will benefit your health while the commercials are playing.

It’s hard to stop eating junk food or eating only the serving size. We tend to go over the limit. We underestimate how much it takes to change our eating habits. These are only some of the few challenges we face today over junk food. One could say, “Oh I’ll start eating healthy tomorrow” but it doesn't happen. The modern world today is not designed to crave fruits and vegetables like celery. No we were trained to crave a Big Mac from McDonalds because we now think in taste and not health. Many people don’t go out for a walk anymore. It’s always by a car. Physical activity has dropped dramatically. Some areas don’t have playgrounds to go play at and some kids have to wait until a parking lot is vacant. That’s the only play area that they have. We are overproducing on the wrong stuff. We only consume what is profitable to the companies. What I really want to focus on is the playground issue that is contributing to obesity. It’s unfair that some cities don’t build a playground to let kids play and be physically active. If there is not at least one playground in the city, it will contribute to obesity because where will children play? If there are no playgrounds, children will just become lazy and go watch some television. While they look at the television they will most likely consume some unhealthy foods such as chips, soda, etc. Over time, more of the population will become either overweight or obese.

Fellow Americans, I believe there is a significant flaw in the US educational system that contributes to a massive affliction that is affecting a large group of students in the public school system. The food served in the schools is unhealthy, therefore the children that are eating these foods are feeling sick, less active and able to learn in school. The children are also being shown advertisements on their televisions while at home, that point them to sugary, fat filled foods, in addition to them being served it at school, they crave it outside of school as well. The children have no say in what they eat every day, it is always served to them. I also tend to believe that the parents of the children, should also be partially responsible for the health of their children. Instead of faulting the government of their children’s afflictions, the parents should pack healthy foods for their children to take to school instead of the unhealthy food that is given to them. The lunches given to children in school are cheap to produce, and easy to prepare, partially because of the government choosing to subsidize unhealthy foods such as corn and soybeans, which are used to make high fructose corn syrup, a sweetener used in unhealthy foods, and soy is used to make soy oils and artificial meat fillers. I believe the up and coming generation of Americans, should have access to healthy foods instead of the unhealthy foods given to them in their schools. I believe that ultimately, the food service companies are lobbying politicians, and are very resistant to change.

One of the problems that create the fat children in schools is the lack of physical
education. studies have shown that if you take away P.E. in schools than the obesity rate will
increase. it seems simple enough, all we need to do is say that every school needs so many
hours of P.E. per week. but it is really not that simple. if we add in P.E. than whole systems
would need to be changed. there would be less time to teach kids important subjects like math
and english. if we add in P.E. though it would help with the epidemic, we would start to fall behind
in our studies. if we are going to add in P.E. than we need to also add more time for class. Also if
we add P.E. we would need to hire more instructors and that costs the schools and districts
money. they would also need to buy P.E. clothing and running shoes. maybe instead of doing
P.E. we can have the children do sports like soccer and baseball. Even golf would work as long
as they didn’t just sit in a golf cart the whole time. whatever we do we need to do it right and
make sure its right the first time so we don’t have to go back and do it all over again. There also
needs to be a good amount of hours that we require a week.

America is becoming so obese that even the children are becoming overweight or even obese. Now a days seeing a child that is overweight is normal, but this may cause Diabetes, asthma and if they don't do anything to change their lifestyle, they may live shorter lives than a healthier person. A big part of this epidemic is the advertising or commercials.Because so many children watch television many are seeing their favorite characters announcing their favorite foods or just because they like the character they would want to buy it.Parents don't really notice or care about what they eat at school, they might think its as healthy as normal food at home but they sell all sorts of fattening / sugary foods. For example, many schools have vending machines and parents give money to their kids to buy their lunch.Lots of the kids spend the money on food from the vending machine, most likely not healthy. If the kid had to choose from either hot cheetos and a healthier granola bar most likely the cheetos are chosen.Although things are getting healthier with more organic foods or baked products people still might not exercise. With many schools banning P.E. most children won't be getting exercise unless they actually go outside and not play videogames or watch television all day.Families in poverty have a big problem with this also.if healthier food was less expensive than “junk food” we might be seeing a healthier world.

The challenges that we face as a nation while facing this obesity epidemic range from
small easy fixes to large time consuming ones. One of these challenges is creating more and
cheaper healthy food. right now all the healthy less processed food is a lot more expensive than
food that is made cheaply and more processed. the people and the contributors to this problem
include the companies that make the food and the government that is supposed to keep our food
healthy. the companies play a big role because they are the ones who make mostly unhealthy
foods and a lot less healthy foods. though this is a good marketing strategy, it is not good
because it is making america fat. the government also has a role in this because they should
regulate what food we eat. they need more control and should not let the companies that they
are supposed to control control them. If we can get the government to step in then we can have
them set up rules that require the government to make the food we eat healthier and more
abundant. One of the other problems that america faces is the increase in healthcare costs. this
is occurring at an alarming rate and it all leads back to the food we eat. people need to start
eating more healthy foods. also the companies that make the food should start to make healthier
foods because people are eating the healthy food.

Obesity is an epidemic sweeping the nation and unless we do something about it it will grow worse. Obesity seems to mostly affect low income families because, with the limited money that they have they put towards bills, after that they may not have the money to go out and buy all the healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables but they do have enough to buy a $1 burger from McDonald. Also we as humans naturally want the yummy cold ice cream as opposed to a head of raw broccoli, and in today's world we are surrounded by the temptation of all the inexpensive, unhealthy, delicious foods. Obesity also greatly affects the economy by tens of billions of dollars. It also makes the cost of health care increase immensely. One of the biggest reasons why people are obese today is because nobody goes out and exercise anymore. Many say its because there are no safe places to go to, there are no parks and no safe roads to go jogging on. I feel that a very simple way to help with this epidemic is to put in more parks where communities need it the most and to put in more street lights so people will feel safer walking down the more deserted streets. Also everyone knows that McDonald's sells $1 burgers so in it necessary for them to have commercials and billboards up everywhere? No, of course. The answer to all this is very simple people simply do not want to act on it. Most people would much rather point fingers at who and why they are obese, and doctors may say that the process of becoming obese is a mental condition, but i believe that most people simply do not want to go out, they don't want to exercise. They just want to complain.

Not Enough Space
As you might be able to guess, there are many challenges and issues that come up when trying to solve the obesity epidemic of an entire country. Problems and challenges such as large companies advertising that their food is healthy even though it is not, too much sugar in the American diet, and not enough parks for the children of America to play in and get exercise. In one section of the video, it tells about an organization of people trying to get a permit to build a park in an empty lot and it took seven years for the city to give them the permits. This is not okay and it is a huge issue that needs to be solved. For instance, the video showed that a family had to play in a parking lot for exercise because other parks were too far away. Perhaps there should be a law if there isn’t one already that says that there has to be a certain amount of parks per square miles of a city. Of course this would affect some players negatively such as businesses that want to expand and make more money, but it would also affect some players positively such as giving more jobs to construction workers to tear down buildings and build more parks. Another challenge out there is that there are far too many farms growing soybeans and corn and not enough farms growing fruits and vegetables. There needs to be more farmland occupied with healthy foods for our country.

Challenges
In America there are a lot of people( children and adults) that are becoming obese. These people face many challenges everyday of their lives. A challenge that children face in some cities is that they don’t have a park where they can go and play. Since the kids do not have anywhere to play, they go and play in parking lots around the city or near their houses. This is not safe for kids because they can get hit by cars. Because kids don’t have parks and can only play in parking lots some parents do not let their children go and play because it’s not safe, so the kids that do not go and play most likely don’t do any physical activity. This contributes to the obesity problem in the United States because if kids don’t have a place where they can play they won’t be able to exercise and burn off the calories they need to.
Another challenge that people have is that most adults do not have time to go and sit down at restaurant that is healthy or go home and make food, because they are so busy working. For people that are always busy, it is easy for them to just go through a drive-thru and get a quick meal, but most of the time that meal is unhealthy and filled with grease and fat. Adults that stop at fast-food restaurants and get food every day are usually overweight or obese and this contributes to the obesity problem we are facing.

ReplyDeleteChallenges
There was many challenges or problems that were stated in the video which was the second part Children in Crisis (Challenges) and I will be talking about some. One problem is that about 25% have excessive fat in their liver which is bad because they shouldn't have fat in those places. Diabetes is an easy disease to get nowadays. Its easier and faster to eat unhealthy easy cooked foods if you're busy and tired, thats why people get obese. So one problem would be people not knowing how to control their eating habits. Our bodies have adapted to all the sweetness and fat. What do we do with all that food? Portion sizes have increased immensely and to have people and food to suit it all. People are consuming 600 calories or more a day, which i over what we should originally be taking. Portions sizes have a lot to do with this dilemma. One of the biggest struggles that appeared in the video was when it was stated that there is barely any public park in the city of Santa Ana, Ca. Therefore kids and adults can't exercise and have to stay home and try to find something else to do. Thats when they might get bored and cant find anything to do and go to their best friend and start munching on some unhealthy foods they found in the cabinets. We (food companies)also don't make enough fruits and vegetables to eat in order to satisfy our dietary needs. So in other words every person in this world if people would be eating their dietary needs not everyone would have enough fruits and vegetables. We can all help though, if we can participate we can change things.

In this current generation, ⅔ of people in America will end up obese. It may be easy to say that we can easily stop this epidemic, but really there are many challenges preventing us from doing so. One of the many challenges is that since many families are working full time jobs, they don't have time to cook a meal for their kids so they go straight to a fast food restaurant. After all, the food there is easy to get and have really low prices. Eating this almost everyday can cause serious problems to your health, but many people think that there isn't really much else to do, since they don't have time to cook and healthier meals are way more expensive. I think that families can just quickly cook up a healthy meal before going to bed and save it for tomorrow's meal so that that way, the kids have something to eat other than fast foods. For the expensive vegetables and fruit, on the long run, it’s worth spending your money on them rather than on unhealthy food. Which connects with one of the other challenges, fruit and vegetables cost too much. When people go shopping for food, they see the cost of vegetables and then the price of a hamburger and go with the hamburger because it costs less money, But people don't really stop and think. The hamburger may seem cheap at that time, but in a few years it can lead obesity, diabetes, cancer and more, which will really cost you a lot of money(medication, health care, etc.). When you could have easily bought the fresh, healthy vegetable and been healthy, not having to worry about paying for any unnecessary illnesses.

Challenges
The first challenge is that there is no room for children to play and this is a big problem because then they have no room to burn off the extra calories that they have acquired during the day from their unhealthy food. I think a way to fix this is to make parks more available in low income places not just in the places where the residences can afford one themselves.
The next issue is that there is subsidies that help grow foods that are made into unhealthy things like soft drinks. The reasons that corn and wheat and soybeans are subsidised is because they have a bigger profit margin. the average profit in a soft drink is 90% while the profit on vegetables is 10%. I think that the way to solve this is by taking away subsidies on corn or lowering them until the economy is stable enough to remove them completely or we can subsidise things that are dark green vegetables, that are actually healthy for you.
Another issue is that if everyone continues to eat the way they do the children will have five to ten pounds of extra weight gain a year. One way to fix this is to have the unhealthy foods be taxed and have there me no tax or even rewards for buying healthy food. another way to fix this is to have schools have stricter rules on what they can and can't make as lunches.
Challenges: Restaurant Portions Sunset F P1 Carr
ReplyDeleteRestaurants are now serving customers portions that are far too large. They are giving us amounts that are over double what we need. Some restaurants are all you can eat. So you are not just getting one over sized portion of food, but as many as you want. This is a problem, because a lot of working families don’t have time to cook so they will go out to eat. And a lot of the time this food is cheap and easy to get. A person would much rather get something that was cheap, fast, and tasted good, then something they would have to make themselves. Also back when humans were hunter gatherers, it was hard to find sugars and fats. Because of this it makes our bodies are wired so we don’t give up extra calories. Especially extra sugars and fats. Big business knows this, so they advertise their food everywhere. They know you’ll see it and want it, even if you know it’s bad for you. This is why they don’t lose customers, because they know people will buy it. A solution to all this would be for restaurants to serve smaller portions, or at least food that is better for their customers. If the portion sizes were smaller or the food was better for you, than eating out wouldn’t be bad. If we could get restaurants and big business to change their ways, everything would be fine. But until that happens we will continue to have unhealthy restaurants.

ReplyDeleteIn the video, it explains how a lot of things can go wrong when children are obese. For example, Type II diabetes is not uncommon in 10 and 11 year olds. A lot of illnesses that only used to belong to overweight adults now are a common reoccurrence in obese CHILDREN. The epidemic is so much bigger in 2013 than it was back in the 1980’s. The school lunches that are currently being served to the kids are lacking basic nutrition, such as basic necessities, like fruits and vegetables.
Some school lunches aren’t even fresh. Food industries don’t even look for safety protocols when preparing the school lunch’s meats and veggies and such.
For example, I remember once in my elementary school days when the school of Glen City in Santa Paula. The school was serving corn dogs for lunch. Before this event, corn dogs were my favorite food. As I was about to eat my corn dog, another student ran up to me and yelled at me not to eat the corn dog. He said that the corn dogs were tainted, and that there was MOLD in the meat. When I broke open the corn dog, I was shocked at a GREEN corn dog. 5 kids had gotten sick that day, and the parents complained to the SPUSD nutrition part of the district. The nutrition CEO told the parents that the kids were making up stories, and not to believe them. The parents refused to deny what the kids were saying, but the district never got truly in trouble, and that’s one of the reasons I don’t eat corn dogs anymore.
One of the problems of the food industry is that they don’t take proper safety protocols on their products, as well as at least making HEALTHY food, but as long as they are getting their money, they don’t care.

ReplyDeleteI believe that school lunches need to be improved not in making them healthier but make them look edible and actually taste like food. We don’t need to cut down 50 calories for whole wheat tortias that make the burritos nearly inedible. Then the fact that the turkey resembles canned dog food, and the pizza tastes like cardboard covered in bland sause and cheese is not a good one.
Well let’s face it the p.e. is terrible in middle school the hardest thing for p.e. was the mile which really isn’t that hard to be honest a mile within 10 minutes is easily do-able but for some odd reason a lot of people just weren’t passing. I believe this is because of the fact that in the p.e. it’s not really a work out it’s just kind of walk around and do whatever and at the beginning of the year we have a dance unit which is terribly easy. If p.e. were to be even near as effective as the government would like it to be it would need to require the mile every day as a warm up and then whatever unit we’re doing.
Well activities outside of school are the parents responsibility to get them to do something and the child’s choice for what they do. Also due to massive amounts of homework and hypocritical parents children can’t hang out with friends to do things outside that are still active but not league sports because as I’ve found most households have the you can’t play with friends on school days.
spencer m. eda period 1
ReplyDeleteSome challenges include the fact that children in poor neighborhoods don’t have parks to play in that are safe. This causes them to stay inside and not exercise which causes obesity. Another issue is that the lack of sidewalks which makes people wants to stay inside and not exercise or be active.
The players include government officials, the children, and very concerned citizens who want to see a change in their neighborhood for the better. The concerned citizens are doing things like having people sign useless papers that may or may not get a park built for them in which case if the park they want gets built then It would be trashed in five years or less with graffiti and in about ten just a rusted piece of metal that sits in a small lot. The government officials role in this is to pull some money together that doesn’t really exist just to get reelected. Now finally we have the children there role is to whine to their parents so they have motivation to do something and get the play grounds up, they may also be used as a way of guilting people into getting the playgrounds built.
The solution is to build the play grounds because this seems to satisfy everyone’s needs. The government officials want to be reelected, so this would make them look good like they “care about the kids”. This satisfies the parents because they want their kids to stop whining. It satisfies the kids because they would actually have something to do.

Its all about the community, kids walking to school and exercising for their leads to stay fit. These kids are kids, they need to start exercising for the next thing. Some need a park to play in because a parking lot isn't enough. They can get hurt and their moms aren't looking forward to that.It took 7 years to plan and construct a park for the kids.Well its better than nothing.
Now in their community the children have a place to play in and a the adults have also the time to walk around the park. However now in days the kids get to walk to school, walk home and its a good portion because at least their getting fit.
Ever since the mayor did the challenge thousands of people have taken the opportunity of going outside and getting fit.One said ‘thank god, now i have a chance to go outside and exercise with the community and with this community we can do it together.”This challenge wouldn't have happen and people wouldn't be able to move and set their goal.As for that they have also given the community a market where they would sell healthy foods and vegetables, well that's mostly what they need.If this was your case, what would you do to get for your community that everybody can all use?I would say the same, because these kids need to start getting motivated and everybody who have health problems should be able to eat healthy portions of food.

Challenges
Over the years, challenges fighting obesity are getting much harder. Obesity is the number one threat to our country--one third of people are obese, one third are overweight, and the numbers are still growing. More than half of Americans have three or more television in their homes, and this has many things to do with obesity: commercials, which influence people to buy junk food (you never see commercials for healthy food); bodily inactivity; eating food while watching; etc.
Restaurants serve portions 2-5 times more than we need, and it costs a lot of money; most people don’t even finish because they are so full, which is a waste of money and food. Obesity rates increased at the same time fast food and corn proliferated. In poor towns, many children don’t even know what a vegetable is, because they usually buy 350 calorie foods, usually chips and/or soda, for about a dollar. Some towns don’t have enough money for gyms or a safe place to work out. We are building parks and pathways for more people to be active, a step towards fighting this epidemic. Less than 3% of farmland is vegetables, and the fruit and vegetable growers are going broke. America is spending millions of dollars trying to care for obesity-related diseases.
Water, a natural resource, costs more than sodas, which can have 10 teaspoons of sugar. In my opinion, soda makes me cringe and it burns my throat if I ever drink it. Who needs soda? I can have just as much fun a soda drinker.
People should start going to family farms and harvesting their own food, because it makes you want it more knowing that you picked it. “The Walking School Bus” is a great way to get kids more active. Even older people should walk or bike to work, considering 70% of people drive. The best behavior to have to end this epidemic is participation.

Children In Crisis
In schools food is become unhealthy and full of unneeded calories and fats. Worst of all most parents think that their child’s school lunch is healthy. Lunches can be made healthier by raising parents awareness, and implementing a new lunch program. It may not be an easy change but it can be made after time.
A way for school lunches to become healthier is by raising awareness about school lunches to parents. One way of doing this is by creating an infomercial. This can be seen by thousands of parents and most of them will want to act within the community to fix the problem and try to find a way to serve the children healthier food. Another way to raise awareness is by showing the parents what their children are eat everyday and maybe even letting them try the food and see how it tastes. This will help make school lunches better but implementing a new lunch program will be the definite solution.
The best way to improve school lunches is by introducing a new lunch program. This lunch program in order to be successful will need to be healthy with plenty of food options. With more food options it would easier for a child to pick a lunch that is healthy and has a good taste. Also with a nutritious lunch the child will have more energy to work though the rest of the day.
With awareness and a healthier lunch program school lunches will be healthier a better.

ReplyDeleteMany things are contributing to childhood obesity. Some of these happen in school and some happen outside of school. One of the main causes of childhood obesity, is children staying indoors and not getting any exercise. Kids stay indoors on their computers or watching their televisions. They don’t go outside and run around like kids are suppose to. Another problem with kids staying indoors and watching T.V. is that they are exposed to hundreds of unhealthy food ads. Kids watch these ads and want the food, and since they’re getting attached to these foods at a young age, they’ll buy them forever. Big business know this so they’ll put advertisements wherever kids will see them. They have cartoon characters and celebrities advertising their products, as well as adding toys. All of this is done so kids will buy their food.
Children not getting enough exercise isn’t the only reason for childhood obesity. Unhealthy food is also a contributing factor. Back when our parents were kids, the food wasn’t so unhealthy and people didn’t care as much. So parents don’t know how to feed their children properly. Because of this they are buying their children the unhealthy food they see on T.V., and this is making their kids gain weight.
There are programs that parents and children can go to, to get educated in nutrition and exercise. In the programs they teach you about unhealthy foods, and give you healthy recipes. They also show you ways to make exercise fun.

Challenges
In America today many challenges must be faced, especially when it comes to America’s problem with the food industry and obesity. Such challenges are one-third of America is obese or overweight, and that unhealthy foods are cheaper than vegetables or organic food. These problem have a huge impact on America’s lists of challenges.
One-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, which is growing everyday. Part of why this number has gotten so large is most people are busy with jobs and do not have the time to make food, and it cheaper and easier to buy fast food that is ok to have every once in awhile, but not everyday. Another contributor is advertising on the television, a person will see hundreds of commercials for sugary unhealthy foods and rarely any healthy foods and people will be encouraged to eat the unhealthy foods. This is a challenge that should be faced but another one that should be is price of unhealthy foods.
Today unhealthy foods are cheaper than healthy food and this is a huge issue. A big contributor to this is the dollar menu. You can easily purchase a 300 calories for only one dollar whereas for a salad it costs at least five dollars. Another reason unhealthy food is cheaper is because it is mass produced and cheaper to make than organic food, which take longer to produce.
America has challenges that will and must be faced obesity and food prices are two that will be.
There are many challenges that the people in areas like Santa Ana (I think) that have such problems merely as trying to buy a piece of land in the heavily populated city. The children have to wait until the parking lots of businesses clear out so they can have a park to play in. Buying a simple unowned piece of land is very difficult, considering it took the people 7 YEARS to buy it.
ReplyDeleteBut people are making a difference.
For one thing, a piece of land that used to be an abandoned building, as well as abandoned land, was torn down and made into a huge park. Today, the area is well maintained and a good way for the local residents to get their exercise in. The park is walker friendly, as well as biker friendly.
But there are still more challenges that all these people still face. For instance, the food industry is not cooping well with obesity epidemic in America. In fact, the food industry is the REASON why the epidemic ever occurred in the first place. In some cases, the food industry is good, so to speak. The fruits and vegetables are good for the society of America. But even produce packaging has its downfalls.
Recent epidemics have shown that Salmonella is present in salads and other greens, which goes to show two things: The FDA is not taking its responsibilities to the fullest, and that even some VEGETABLE packaging industries are taking all the necessary safety protocols.
Many people in our society are struggling with the challenges that America faces today. But we are capable of overcoming these challenges.

Challenges
The challenges I see in this video, are the people who are trying to eat healthier foods, and be more active, and they are challenged by not having enough local fresh produce, and parks to exercise and play for the children. The video show’s a group of women and their children in the city of Santa Ana, that shared how in their zip code there was not one park for them, and how it took them ten years to be able to convince a vacant lot owner to donate their property to build a park, and now it is taking them another ten years to get permits from their city to build the park. The city of Santa Ana, is located in Orange County, a generally affluent and middle class area, I see this as a huge challenge, for underprivileged American citizens, because it is very hard for them to find a decent park for their children to play in. The video shows the children of these families playing in an empty parking lot, which is not too safe, because they are trying to get their children to be healthier. The children shown seem like they would love to have a park to play in, and they don’t seem to be having as much fun as they could be having. They seem bored, and one child said that the parks they do go to are too far and overcrowded. In conclusion, I honestly believe that the government should be held accountable for this problem. The children are suffering, partly because of their choices to subsidize unhealthy foods, and also because these children probably are the ones that are eating the school lunches, that the government provides; which are also unhealthy. The least the government could do for these people, is to simplify the process for underprivileged people to get their county and city permits, in the name of public health and progress. In the end, the result would be a better, healthier society. This would also save the federal and state governments money, because a healthier people cause less medical bills.

Challenges
A challenge that appeared in the video was that people were over eating food that isn't good for them. Scarcity the reason why people eat lots of the bad food they aren't supposed to eat. They used to be a limited amount of food but since food is made differently now, that isn't the case anymore. Families started turning to these foods because lots of families are busy and need to get to point a to point b quickly and there isn't time to make healthy homemade food so they’d go to a fast food restaurant. When it came down to it was just much easier to eat fast food. But this became a problem for some that couldn't stop eating out of self control because it was just so easy and quick. People are not genetically programmed to turn down high calorie foods. People adapted to eat more than they were supposed to because marketing shows that food is good and can be found anywhere. Restaurant portions have doubled and study shows that when people are served more, they eat more. The food they eat isn't good for them because for the last 100 years our food supply has been industrialized. Corn bushes can now be double and added fats, sugars, and grains are subsidized.
The contributing factors as to why this is happening is because it makes company’s richer and fast food is so cheap. The companies refuse to make changes because they want to make as much money as they can and making changes to cheap food can cost them quite a bit. Fast food has a lot of corn and soy products and these food are cheap to get because they're so much of it. The fats, sugar, and grains being subsidized also brings the value of fast food down because it makes it fake food that isn't nature therefore the quality goes down and its low prices are reasoning. This makes the food affordable for low income families. They must be consequences and people held responsible for the damage it does to people's health and that's when the participants and players come in.
The players are the companies, consumers, and the government. The companies because they are making the bad food and not changing it. The consumers because they are the people buying the products which encourages the companies keep making bad food. And the government for providing the companies with subsidizers to make the food. The player with the most power are the food companies because they are the ones causing the problems; hurting the government’s wallet and people’s health. To overcome this change all the people must come together and demand healthy food so the companies will change their food and the government needs to try to make healthy foods more affordable and support farmers to grow more fruits and vegetable instead of wasting their money on subsidizes because they’re only hurting themselves.

Children in crisis
After watching Children in crisis I cannot believe how bad the country has gotten. Unfortunately the food that everyone is eating is the most profitable, but it is very unhealthy. Now since more children are obese they are at a higher risk for heart problems, High blood pressure, and Diabetes, most adults in the later years have problems like these. But today it is actually not uncommon to walk down the street and see an obese 10 or 12 year old. Most people are arguing that the media is to blame for our obesity, or even the food companies, yes the food advertising is mainly, high in sugar foods, instead of vegetables and fruit, but its the person’s own fault that they end up the way they are now, obese. Unfortunately the food marketing affects the children more since they are the ones that ate almost always in front of the TV, every time they pass the “lucky charms” or “Disney princess fruit snacks” they absolutely have to have them. Since they saw the kids on the commercials enjoying the food. But the people do not get to choose what is healthy and tell the companies to change the foods. The companies themselves define what is healthy or not healthy. I thought it was rather dumb that pizza was considered a vegetable because of the tomato paste on it, who knows if there was actually any trace of tomato in that pizza. Let me be honest, as much as I dislike physical education, the schools in the US definitely needs it. But there is no federal law that requires PE in schools. Only 1/6 schools in the US require PE 1-3x a week. The only thing we can do is watch what we eat try to consume as little fat or greasy foods as possible. There is no need to shut down the McDonalds or Burger King or whatever, since it is not the companies fault, but the individual’s decision to eat the fast food.

As Americans of the USA(United States of America) we all face some very different and some very similar problems. One very major similar problem we all face as a Nation is... Obesity. Obesity has become one of the leading causes of death in not just Adults, but now also in children. Challenge: As the Obesity Epidemic of the Nation rises it is costing us billions of dollars towards health care which is not only taking away from Americas Debt, but is increasing health care bills rapidly. Another problem we are facing as a Nation is... The Lack of Healthier food choices. Challenge: Most Americans do not really have a say in whether they should have healthier food options, because fast food is cheap as to where healthier food options such as ones from farmer markets are expensive. Some people do not even have a chance to go to a farmers market, because they live nowhere near one. In conclusion, to overcome these challenges we must work together, first solving Obesity Epidemics, then we will go towards finding a solution to get farmers markets locally available. Together we can also make it so that the government is not able to control us on what foods we can eat, and the foods we can not eat. Also, we can come together and make it easier to stay healthy and fit, become aware of the problems we are facing as a Nation and we should do something about it. Together!!

The population is becoming more overweight. Adults are over eating, and if they have kids, the kids are becoming fat and they have no say in it really. I mean, if your parents give you something to eat of course you are going to eat it, i mean come one they are your parents. These parents are becoming the reason for these kids obesity. With all of these fast food restaurants advertisements’ targeting kids, the kids want their’ parents to buy them the food, and a parent doesn't want to say no to their kids, so what do they do, purchase them burgers and fries with extra slice of calorie and some caloric dipping sauce for their fries. Then people wonder why the nation is becoming larger, literally
School lunches are not helping either. For most kids, school is when they want to eat the most. I mean yeah they have a salad bar or something, but if they have been waiting practically all day to eat, they are most definitely not going to get something healthy. The cafeteria basically is feeding these kids trays full of calories, and they no problem with it. These schools have healthy choices available, but they aren't encouraging kids to make healthy choices and get the food. These healthy lunches need to be imprinted in these children. Schools need to make children more aware of the consequences of their dietary decisions. If someone doesn't try and help these kids, then who will, because apparently, its not going to be the parents’ seeing that they play a big role in this epidemic.

In the video “Challenges” we see communities try to overcome a problem.First off we don't even make enough fruits and veggies to go in everyone's healthy lifestyle. With only a few farmers growing actual fresh foods and the government paying the other “farmers” which are basically machines its a tough challenge to win.One in four adults get no physical activity at all and children consume more than seven and a half hours of media a day. Also thirty six percent of Americans have cardiovascular disease. The government is helping this by paying for the unhealthy foods. It's too easy to consume the calories but when it comes to losing them it's tough. With bigger servings and poverty in the south its really easy to buy a big fatty/sugary meal for less amount of money and with humans wired to salty fattening and sugary foods its an easy choice to eat these foods. It took Santa Ana 7 years to make a park.So if Santa Ana didn't have a park their must be many places in poverty without a park. Why must the government make us fat?Is it all just for the money? Its just going to cost more later when you're in the hospital.

Nearly every child in America is required to attend school. One might think that such a facility would supply only healthy food to its children who will learn, grow up, and eventually make up a future generation of adults. Sadly, this is not often the case. It seems that America’s twisted food system has spread to nearly every corner and aspect of the country.
A child wakes up, skips breakfast, and gets a warm, soft, white, tasty bagel with cream cheese. At break he purchases a sausage-egg-and-cheese-biscuit-sandwich and—why not?—a large chocolate milk. Lunch consists of chicken nuggets, ketchup, chocolate milk, and a brownie. This is not how we should be raising our children. This type of practice only breeds horrible, unhealthy eating patterns which may have drastic impacts on his or her future. This is a problem.
Food that should only be eaten about once a week is served daily. Pizza, nuggets, fries, processed buns, all kinds of sweets… you name it!… sugary drinks is only a small part of the problem. There is no point in denying it—this food is addicting. Simply the availability of these foods is a problem. When you walk into a middle school cafeteria, what do you see? To put it short, it is not a happy sight in terms of health. The closer you inspect, the uglier it gets. The fact of the matter is that the parents of this generation are showing them that unhealthy food is normal… are giving them way more than they need… are setting them up for failure.

A large portion of America’s grown population is obese or food related problems. Little is being done to ensure that those numbers are not increasing. The children of America are taught horrible eating patterns. Most get little exercise on a daily basis yet are given enough food to stuff themselves. It is also not unnatural for them to have open-access to unhealthy food. Oftentimes, unhealthy is the only type of food available; in other cases, children simply do not know what healthy food is. Sometime you meet a child to whom TV is limitless. All of these are problems, but who is really the cause? We have become a food warzone and are too caught up to stop it.
In America, we live in a world full of distractions. Too much of the parent generation is blindly facilitating their children towards unhealthy eating styles. A fatty lifestyle, in many cases, has become regular. Is it that we are too unwilling and attached to do anything about it? Are we too unwilling to actually admit and do away with unhealthy eating habits ourselves? We have created a poisonous environment, one that is difficult, unlikely to be overcome, would take lots of honest encouragement to beat, and is hard to stop. Here is the number one question: Are we too lazy to make changes or to take responsibility for teaching our children what’s right and what’s wrong? It sounds outrageous, but think again. When it comes to food in America, are we making decisions for the good because we want to or are we setting ourselves up for failure? Are we too addicted to what we cannot seem to overcome? Is our country too lost to find its way out? Will food be America's downfall?

Our generation is recorded to be the first to have an estimated shorter lifespan than our parent’s. Why? Blame the fast food industry and laziness of Americans because of all the recent advances that make it easier for the population to access all these things. Two thirds of the entire population of America are overweight or obese. Isn’t it crazy to think that in child obesity is tripling every generation? Who is to blame for this? If it should even be anyone I think it should be the highly processed food corporations who are finding each and every way to trick consumers into thinking their products are actually somewhat good for them.
Because of this insane epidemic, estimates are that one in three children in the U.S. will acquire Type II diabetes during their lifetime. Do people realize how bad this is for the future of the planet and the entire world if all these people are too weighted to do anything! At least to me this is a huge concern. Watching this video and taking a look into the lives of children who are obese or overweight truly opened my mind to all the challenges they face in the everyday life. If they weren’t obese, they wouldn’t have nearly as many problems concerning their health.
In reality, who is it to blame for these children’s obesity? The parents that are being sucked into the commercialized industry? If a low income single parent needs to feed her son on a busy, late school night and the only dinner option is a drive through McDonald’s run- I wouldn’t blame her for picking up a meal on the way home. The last thing she’s going to think about is the way she’s supporting a massive unethical empire.

The United States is currently dealing with one of the biggest challenges nationwide, Obesity. Obesity is a contributing factor in death and disability to an individual. Approximately one third of adults are obese, with another third overweight. The Obese are at greater risks for serious medical conditions. Being obese not only affects the person, it drives up health care prices. Costing businesses and the country billions of dollars, but a skinny person would have to pay the same amount as an unhealthy fat person, since they are bringing up health care prices, and higher employee health costs. The excuse that overeating is as much about biology as it is about psychology is ridiculous; being obese is the person’s personal responsibility. But one of the main reasons that Americans go and eat the unhealthy food is because that is the food that is cheap and fast, it is also constantly being advertised. It’s almost like a “game” between the company and the consumer, but the fast food is “contributing” to the obesity. But despite the challenges against obesity, some people are fighting against it.While in partnership with the government, they are helping citizens become more active, and live healthier lives. The only way that the fight can be won is by eating healthier and just saying “No” to fast food. There is no need to blame the companies for your obesity, or completely get rid of all unhealthy food at restaurants, but it is certainly okay to encourage eating healthy. So that people are not uneducated, or ignorant about the food that they are eating and the consequences about eating unhealthy food.

100 years ago people were not dying from cancer or diabetes because there wasn't as much advertising for fast food or high fat foods back then. People knew that if you eat a lot of high fat foods then your are going to become obese. People think that they can just run to the gym and jump on the treadmill. But that is not how it works, you have to be determined and have to stay on the smart and healthy track not the easy and fatty track. staying healthy is hard now a days with all of the ads that are on T.V and on billboards. Children dont know what healthy and unhealthy is. they just know it looks good and tastes good so they eat it. Not knowing that it will affect them in the long run.
As you get older you get more knowledgeable about nutrition and what is and is not healthy. Yet when you are young you think that you are invincible, but sadly nobody is invincible. Mcdonalds has a playground at almost all of their restaurants which helps the children and the parents. The children get their energy out and the parents get to relax. At the same time they are drawing in the children to eat their food so they can go on the playground. Fast food joints have changed so much since the beginning of time. they used to be a place where the food was healthy and safe and you could get a nice meal. now it is the exact opposite.
