Topic 4 - The Dollar Menu, Food Inc - Chapter 5

Focus Question: Should access to healthy food be a right for everyone?

Students:  If you choose to respond on this topic, please use a word processor to write, edit and finalize your thoughts, then use the "Comment" option to post your reflection. Your response should consist of complete sentences that flow from topic to topic in a logical way...start with a sentence that identifies what question you are responding to, then share your thoughts and use evidence from your life or the video to support your responses. Do NOT re-post the questions in your response.

The instructor will "moderate" your comment and post your reflection when all students have submitted their final responses.

Guiding Question Sets (from Food Inc Participant Guide)

  • Would it be okay with you that healthy food is only available to people who can afford it?  If so, what might be the consequences of that—both to individuals and society?  If not, how might we make healthy food available to everyone?
  • The film gives the impression that food is either cheap or healthy.  Do you think it is true that food is either one or the other, or is this a false dichotomy?
  • In the film, the mother, Maria Andrea Gonzalez, says, “We’re really tight from either paying for his [Alfredo Orozco’s] medicine to be healthy or buying vegetables to be healthy.”  Which should she choose if she cannot afford both?
  • How have our government policies affected the types and costs of available foods?  How does the cheap price of processed food affect low-income families?  Is this fair?
  • Subsidies make certain foods cheaper than they would be otherwise. Without subsidies, how might low-income families afford food?
  • In the film, author Michael Pollan says, “We’ve skewed our food system to the bad calories, and it’s not an accident.” What does he mean by this?
  • With cheap food, it seems our society pays at both ends—at the production end with subsidy tax dollars, and at the consumption end with poorer health and lower productivity. Who benefits from cheap, fast food?Is it really cheap for everyone?
  • How might our government policies be restructured to allow more access to healthier foods? (For example, policies might educate people about healthful eating or give incentives to grow and buy fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other healthier foods.)
  • Do you think healthy eating should be a right, a responsibility, or a privilege?

The first question that I am addressing retains within it an element of bias. I will attempt to answer it without being swayed by the wording of this question. This would be okay with me, however this question implies that there is no way possible for families living below the poverty level to ever have a chance of getting healthy food. This is not so. There is the “free” lunch program, the “free” food stamps, the “free” welfare checks, etcetera. All of these things are paid for by taxpayers, and since the tax rate for the “wealthy” is over 53%, I should think that if the government has any sense at all, they would make good use of that hard earned money. Despite what the media says, the “wealthy” did not become wealthy through the stock market. They became wealthy by putting themselves through college and working hard. There is also the belief that people are becoming wealthy through inheritance. In case you do not know, the inheritance tax is set at 70%, so believe me, no one is inheriting their family's billions. If you want healthy food, you can get healthy food, that is, if the government officials that you elected make use of the obscene amount of taxes they are going around and collecting every year. I believe this covers both the first and second question.

Since questions 2 and 3 correspond, I will skip to question 4. I believe that this is a false dichotomy. It is true that most unhealthy food is cheap, but there are plenty of cheap, healthier choices. Frozen vegetables, frozen pizzas, powdered milk, eggs, some frozen meats, etcetera, are incredibly cheap, and if you buy food in bulk, you can feed a family for a couple dollars.

Moving on to question 5, I believe that she should invest her money in healthy food, because if she doesn’t, then one day she will be paying, not only for her husband’s medication, but for that of herself and at least one of her daughters.

Government policies have caused for the taxation of the upper half of America, and now that they are running out of money, the government has put pressure on food companies. Food companies are now trying to make cheaper food faster. This has caused for the excess of processed food. Allow me to explain. When a food company produces, let’s say, meat, if the meat is not sold by a certain date then it will be thrown out. However if the meat is processed it will not go bad, therefore saving the company the money that they would have lost, had the meat been all natural. That is why processed foods are always cheaper than all-natural foods. There is no huge evil conspiracy, and the big industries are not out to get you. This is not an evil setup, it is just how the world works. Organic food is more expensive than processed food in the same way that diamonds are more expensive than zircons. This is how the world works, and instead of sitting around complaining, work hard. I believe that this sufficiently covers all of the questions sufficiently. If you have any questions or would like to contradict me (which will more than likely happen) feel free to. I will be polite, level headed, and reasonably justify all of my opinions reasonably, so long as the rest of the class does the same.

Healthy food should be available to everybody. Not only people who can afford it. But at the same time, unhealthy food should be available too. It shouldn't be a bad thing that it is. The people get to choose what they eat. Healthy food should just equally available to them.

Healthy food is already available for everyone. At the 99 Cent store, you can get Organic fruits and veggies. But, then again, some people don't have access to a 99 Cent store, and can't get fruits and veggies. Then, its not so necessarily a food problem, its other money problems in our government that is affecting everything else in the economy. When or if those problems are solved, healthy food could be available to everybody who really wants it.’

She should choose the healthy food. Fruits and veggies are like a natural medicine, they can do great things for the body. So if she finds the right fruits and veggies that will help his diabetes, it could go away faster that is could with medicine. With medicine it might not go away at all.

People that are in the government are a big effect on the food industry. Like the men and women that have once worked for Monsanto are now in the White House, people who are trying to do a good thing to fight against the big food companies almost can't win, because they have all the ex employees working in the government now. When the ex employees are working in the government, they will pass laws or try to do other things to help those big businesses.

It affects them in a good and bad way, because they have really good cheap food they can eat, but now they have all the health issues that come with eating unhealthy. Now everybody else has to pay for them and their issues in taxes.

If there weren't any subsidies, I don't think there would be a huge problem. When subsidies came in the picture, this whole food problem started. It affected farmers world wide. So, low-income families could afford healthy food.

Big companies that are in it just for the money are switching over to anything that can make producing food cheaper, but still tastes the same. So, with all the cheaper products they are putting in the food, it is making bad calories in it.

Low-Income families benefit from the cheap fast food, but then everybody else has to pay for their health care through taxes. So then those families will end up having to eat like low-income families at one point or another, because of the poor choices other people made.
It is not so much the cheaper foods that are making the healthy food expensive, its everything else in our government that is effecting the food industry. A huge portion of people are tight with money for a number of reasons that has nothing to do with food or health. Its high tax prices and the worry of paying morgage. So, when that all crumbles, everything goes up in prices, like gas, and food. So, the problem might not be in the food industry, it could be other places, and when those are fixed, people can start to focus on healthy food.

Eating healthy is a combination of all of the above. Because you can't let your diet get to out of hand. But at the same time, when someone takes it away, and makes you a criminal for drinking a over sized drink, it then becomes a right. It is also a privilege because not everybody in the world has the ability to eat healthy, because they are in a third world country, they can't afford it, or whatever their situation might be.

No, it would not be okay with me that healthy food is only available to people who can afford it. Different income rates should not decide what your health should be like. Everyone should be able to afford being healthy. The only reason someone should not be eating well, is if they personally make that choice.

If healthy food is only available to individuals that can afford it, our society will most likely go downhill. Not having the resources to eat healthy, means having a shorter life span, and less time to contribute to the community. With less people eating healthy, more people need health care. Health care is provided through the communities money, so even the people who are taking care of themselves still have to pay a price for the people who are not.

’The environment we live in needs to change. We need to stop producing so much junk food, and start building an environment that offers fresh food at reasonable costs. Taking the money that we put into healthcare and putting that money to making healthy food affordable to everyone, could be a way to change. Fast food companies need to be pushed to change. Consumers need to take action, with the help of the government.

I will agree that the majority of the time unhealthy food is much cheaper and much more accessible. However, I don’t think it is impossible for low-income families to eat healthy if they manage their money and lives well. Prices, the availability, and advertisement of healthy and unhealthy food need to be altered. Food producers should stop producing so much corn, fat, salt, and sugar, and start producing more natural foods.

To me, healthy food should be in access to everyone, not just the people who can afford it. Everyone deserves to be healthy and live a longer life. But with another point of view, it is people’s own responsibility to have healthy food too. If they cannot afford it, they should have gotten a well education and a well-paying job.

Some consequences may be that if someone with a low income ate fast food for meals, they would easily get health problems and have to pay for medicine. But if someone with a low income ate healthy food, they might run out of money and have to switch over to fast food. It would just be easier to eat healthily and have a well functioning body.

To make healthy food for everyone would not be the easiest thing, but it can work. If fast food bought grass-fed beef, made french fries in the in the restaurant (rather than frozen packages). If they also took away most fat, salt, and sugar, and replaced them with protein or healthier menu options, there would for sure be a difference. Things would cost a little bit more, but that would make people eating less frequently at fast food places. Even though things would be healthier without preservatives, they still would not be at their healthiest.

I agree with the fact that food is either cheap or healthy, because that is what food is. If someone only had two dollars to spend at the store, they’d probably settle for chips’ ahoy cookies rather than a head of broccoli because of how expensive vegetables are. From the viewpoint of someone that disagrees with food is either cheap or healthy, might say that there are healthy foods that are not expensive, you can always get a ready made salad for cheap, or a few peppers for cheap too.

  5. Bryce K. Part 2
If you have to choose between diabetes medicine and being healthy, I would recommend going for the healthy food. Although some diabetes cases are serious and medicine is surely needed, I can agree with going for the medicine too. But if a family has a diabetic member, healthy food would be a greater option, because it will refresh the diabetic persons body, and since diabetes usually runs in the family as well, the other family members will be less prone to it by the healthy food and less junk in their body.

The government is supposed to keep the nation safe, and sometimes I wonder why they don’t just close down all fast food. But on the other side of viewpoint, so many jobs would be lost, and so many people would be unhappy about their favorite food being gone, because everyone enjoys fast food every once in awhile.

It is not fair that low-income families don’t get the right to healthy food, because everyone deserves to have a long and happy life. But to switch to the other side, many low-income families made poor decisions on not being educated enough to get a job and get paid, or enough education to even know what is healthy or not. Not entirely, but in a way, it is their own fault that they cannot afford to be healthy.

“We’ve skewed our food systems to the bad calories, and it’s not an accident” means that food industries are making food so unhealthy, but tasting so good. As consumers would buy all of the food, and after awhile of eating like this, the food industries would get bigger as well as the consumers. Making a disaster for some people, but a glory for others.

Who really benefits from cheap food? Those people with the benefits are the ones who choose to eat that way, most people have enough money to eat healthier. But unhealthy food is not cheap for the families with a very low income, it is simply their medium. Which is why society needs to step it up a little, so we can get less health problems and less expensive healthier foods. But from a different opinion, families with a low income can also eat healthier, by maybe ordering a salad and water at McDonalds, rather than a Double Bacon Cheese Burger with a coke.

What I think is a great idea for government to do is, have nutritionists come every week into classrooms in schools, and make healthy recipes for all of the students. It would teach them to make better decisions about food, and get a little bit of healthiness in them.

I think healthy eating should be a responsibility. Why? Because all people deserve to eat healthy, but it is also their choice, even if they have a low income, get a salad instead of a burger. A water instead of a soda. But if someone were to say that healthy eating was a right, I would agree with that too. Everyone, no matter what circumstances, does deserve a healthy body and life. But if someone were to say that healthy eating was a privilege, I would slightly agree with them, because if people do the right things and make the right choices, healthy would be there option. One step at a time of your own responsibilities will make a very healthy person, and a very happy and long life.

Well, if they had chosen to spend their money on healthy food in the first place, they probably wouldn’t need the medicine. It may have seemed too expensive to buy healthy food originally, but now, they don’t really have a choice to pay for medicine. I think she should choose to start making healthier options if they continue buying fast food. McDonalds does offer a few salads, and she should make sure her husband is getting sufficient exercise. Hopefully, these changes will reduce the amount of medication he needs, but ideally, they would have made better choices from the beginning.

’I don’t feel like our government has done very much to benefit healthy food. I rarely ever hear of a new policy being passed that makes fast food companies do something about the “death” food they’re offering. I also haven’t seen very much of a change in produce costs at the supermarket. Honestly, the government seems like they’re not affecting types and costs of available foods at all, which could be the worst thing they can do.

’ The cheap price of processed food affects low-income families by making it harder for them to eat healthy. If processed food is affordable and filling, that probably seems like the best option to them. Organic lettuce on the other hand, not so cheap, not so filling, not going to make it into low-income family refrigerators. This is not okay, because it’s hard enough to make the choice to eat healthy, but even harder when making that choice is more expensive. Healthy food should be easily available to everyone, if they are willing to take care of themselves and make healthy choices.

Let’s just pretend subsidies did not exist for a minute. Food companies would have to find other ways to make good profits. If every food company was expensive, so much so low-income families had difficult times purchasing food from the supermarket, the food companies would lose profit. Therefore, the companies would have to lower costs to an affordable price. However, if companies did not lower prices, and low-income families were not able to afford wholesome food, fast food becomes the next option. When this happens, the families health goes downhill and their lives are shortened.

’ Bad calories tend to be easier to mass produce. Humans crave fat, salt, and sugar, which is extremely easy for companies to provide. The outcome of this, is food companies offering more and more fatty foods, which do not cost much to manufacture. Fresh produce gets left behind because it’s difficult to grow healthy looking crops in large numbers. Food companies, like most everyone else, are selfish. They offer what will boost their pay, they don’t really care if they’re leading America to obesity as long as their rich.

Americans have gotten pretty lazy. Fast food is easy to produce which may seem like a benefit to those producing it. In the long run, fast food is only “benefiting” the owners of the big name companies. The workers probably aren’t paid much, the people eating it are getting struck by disease, and even the people not eating it have to pay taxes that help produce it. We have to decide if those 10 guys that are rolling in money because of fast food pay for the rest of us that are negatively struck by fast food.

Government policies could be restructured to allow more access to healthier foods by putting way more clearly printed information on food labels. People should not be thinking the blueberry muffin they’re eating is healthy just because the package says 10 grams of whole grain. Consumers need to see ALL the ingredients in what they’re eating, and how those items might affect their health. Fast food companies need to be forced to re-work how they produce the food thousands of people are eating. The government needs to educate people straight-on about nutrition and how the choices they make can harm or help them.

I think healthy eating should be a right in the sense that it should be affordable and very available to everyone. Each human should be able to decide how they want to eat, but I think the government needs to put more restrictions on the food that is offered in our environment. For example, a ½ pound McDonalds hamburger should not be available for people to eat. If that is asking too much, there should be health laws saying you are only permitted to buy one ½ pound McDonalds hamburger a day. I don’t think healthy eating should necessarily be called a privilege, because to me, that would mean it is not very available, and only a special occasion thing. Healthy food should be available all day every day, to everyone.

’ I think its unfair for the healthy food to be more expensive food than the fast food or any other unhealthy cheap food out there. People want to eat vegetables and fruits, but they can’ because they don’t have the money to afford it.

It would be better for those who want healthy food and a better society, because there would be less cases of Diabetes and people becoming obese. We can definitely change this type of problem

We can lower the price on fruits & vegetables or we can give food stamps to people who can’t buy these type of things. We can try making more ads on healthy foods and maybe a little less on fast food and sodas ads.

This is true because unhealthy food is now considered to be cheap but not good for your health. As in for healthy food is raising up on price, it is good for you. People struggle on either I save money and buy some something from mcdonalds for two dollars, or I can spend ten dollars on two pounds of carrots. This is a major problem for people who have healthy issues.

Government has been focusing on putting fast food advertisements on television, billboards, magazines, toys, etc. We don’t really see any commercials or ads talking about how healthy carrots are, instead we see on how delicious a Big Mac can be. Making fruits and vegetables expensive and make it seem like they don’t exist.

Like I said before, people are struggling on buying fruits, vegetables, healthy snacks and all these products that can be two times more healthy for you are really expensive compared to the “Dollars Menu” at Mcdonalds. Of course this unfair, We need to take action before it becomes a major problem.

Having healthy food only be available for people who can afford it is really a shame,I'm definitely not okay with it. Society says that everyone should eat healthy, but buying a big mac is a lot more convenent then getting one head of lettice at the store.By raising prices on organic foods more people are getting major health issues, this also reflects on the way people work and all around funtion. Eating unhealthy causes you to be more tired and less active.

The film gives the impression that food is either cheap or healthy.Well a good way to have healthy food available to anyone is to lower the prices of food or have low income families have food stamps. If Maria cannot afford both medicine and healthy food she should choose the healthy food and get in the habit of making salad.

The cheap prices and large quantity of food looks like a good choice to low-income families, the vegetables and fruit and all that good stuff is a lot more expensive and therefore, not the ideal option for poverty families. The government controls what the costs of food and how processed food is , they should lower prices and process less to keep their citizens happy and healthy.

Without Subsidies families would have a harder time affording meals, but it would be so much better for them to not have the chemicals and such. The quote“We’ve skewed our food system to the bad calories, and it’s not an accident by Michael Pollan said means that the government has put out that bad calories are the better tasting ones, which they are, but they do not have the nutritional value that “real” food has. He's also saying the government MEANT to make most of the population obese, which is a good cause of health problems and death.

The beneficiaries of cheap food are the fast food companies and also healthcare agencies. The fast food industry is only interested in money, not the well being of their customers.Fast food might be cheap at the moment but it will add up once you get some type of obesity related disease. To make fast food itself, doesnt cost much, thats why its so cheap, and the fact that it not “real” food makes it cheaper.

’ The Governments policies for healthy foods should be reconstructed to educate people about the dangers of eating unhealthy. The Government could also show people how to grow fruits and vegetables, whole grains and other healthy foods The government could a increase the price of fast food so that people won't want to buy it as much and then make better choices about eating.

Eating healthy is a right everyone should have, but if you choose to eat unhealthy than thats a lifestyle choice, therefore it is also a responsibility. We as people are getting our rights taken from us and nobody is doing anything about it. The fast food industry is displaying all this delicious looking food that once we see triggers the craving for sugar, salt ,and fats.

  10. Healthy food should be available to everyone, not just if they can afford it; it is a necessity, not a luxury. Many low income families just cannot afford to buy healthy food when they can get a much better deal from fast food chains like McDonalds. They have no choice but to eat unhealthy, subsidized food that causes them even more expensive problems in the long run, such as Type 2 diabetes and various cardiovascular diseases. Only people with more income can afford the healthy food, the all-natural and organic. Right now, food is either cheap or healthy and we must work to change that. Why shouldn’t food be healthy and cheap? By subsidizing food like corn, we make it cheaper- cheaper to buy, sell, and eat. If we stopped subsidizing, fast food and processed foods would no longer be as cheap, causing more people to turn to healthier alternatives. The food subsidy system must be changed so healthier food are more widely available because the truth is- who really benefits from cheap, fast food? Not the consumers, who acquire dangerous health risks, not the people, who pay for the food subsidies with their tax dollars. Only the big companies benefit from gaining millions, all because they cook their food with salt, fat, and sugar, the three items our brains are hardwired to eat and crave. All people have a right to be healthy, to live happy healthy lives, something we can’t do if we’re eating fast, processed, and subsidized foods.

    Part 1

I don’t think it be okay that healthy food is only available to people who
can afford it. I think that everybody should have the option to eat healthy food. I should not matter if you have a poor income or a multi billionaire. Everybody has the same rights and I believe through to a healthy diet is one of them. It would be beneficial for every person to have the option to eat healthy so that we can avoid all the extra stuff you would need to have if you were not healthy

I think that one way that we can make food healthier is to lower the cost to produce the healthy food. Make carrots cheaper so that more families will be able to afford them. Take out the money spent in figuring out how unhealthy corn syrup is and put that money into making something good. We already know that something is bad so why spend a big amount on money focusing on that instead of putting that research money into growing healthy food. I think that nowadays food companies like McDonalds are trying to encourage healthier eating by offering more fresh choices in their menu. I see McDonalds know advertising salads instead of big fat hamburgers. I think the next step is to start getting rid of the hamburgers on the menu and replacing them with healthier options.’
If I Was really tight from either paying for medicine to be healthy or buying
vegetables to be healthy I would personally chose the fast food because it would be easier to get and less of a hassle to prepare and cook. On the other hand I know that the food that is on the dollar menu is just raw chemicals. If food that you are eating came from a laboratory and not from the ground something in that should tell you that it has been degraded. If you went to the supermarket and purchased the healthier veggies and fruits you might be able to wing your husband off of the expensive medications. If you exercised and ate decently most likely he won't need the pills anymore. The big question is how do you start?

The government have been allowing some food corporations to put the money first then the consumer health. Some farmers have been allowing putting the money first then the environment and the workers’ health. this results in having cheap food with bad consequences. You have the dollar hamburger but you have the tourchered chemically enhanced cow and the poor workers for other countries making it. Your choice. The cheap price of food attracts the low income families in a big way. Most commonly the low income people are working a lot and the idea of just pulling up and getting food without to prepare anything. Also the idea that you can feed a whole family of four a big meal for only 10 dollars attracts them very much.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Blake M. EDA Per. 4 Mrs. Carr
    Part 2

Without subsidies the low income families would have to grow their own food or go to the farmers market and be very conscious of the price that they are paying. But the idea of putting healthy foods into your body is a good thing. Besides if we take care of our bodies for one we will most likely be able to live longer and have many fewer health problems.

In the film, author Michael Pollan says, “We’ve skewed our food system to the
bad calories, and it’s not an accident.” This means that people crave these bad calories and we’ve created a system where we can get this type of food for much cheaper than the food that we should be eating. At the end the fast food companies benefit from the cheap food. They are attracting a big market of people who want something that tastes good but who are on a budget. This just drives in business to their companies making them richer and supporting them and they're unhealthy foods.

The government needs to offer a program where un fortunate families would be able to get a free education about how they can eat healthy and on a budget. Eating should be a right. A right for a good healthy nation and a right to the public to make them healthy. I personally don't want to live in a country with a whole bunch of fat people who can't do squat and so then can work. We should see a person every morning riding a bike to work, or going on a jog. Keep active. Eat right and smart. and enjoy life healthy. You can do so much more. When I was in sixth grade I was one of those kids that was a little chubby around the waist. I could not run the mile or do any kind of exercise for that sort. I had a poor diet and didn't care to change it. By the time I got into fifth grade I was fit from all of the exercise I had over the three years. I also would eat out less and on the weekends ride my bike. It makes you feel so much better when you are healthy. You feel like you can do anything. It’s kind of fun.

No, because it’s unfair for only the people can afford it can get it, and the people who can’t afford it will get the cheap and unhealthy food, will risk of getting diabetes. Only people who will be healthy are the people who get the healthy food, which are rich people.
First, get rid of the unhealthy food, and make the healthy food less expensive than it was before. Making the healthy food less expensive will have less people with diabetes or other diseases because of eating unhealthy food.
If you can’t afford one or the other, then choose one that will benefit your family. I think this is true because many people get diabetes type two by eating fast food every day, I've learned this in school. Your family needs to eat healthy food, to keep them activity every day, healthy food has that energy that makes not fall asleep, fast food doesn't have that energy, it’ll always keep you tired.
If I were her, I would choose the fast food because that’s the only cheap thing that is food, but it’s not healthy for you. I would make sure to check the nutrition labels of the food that the fast food is offering, and to research it (if possible). If no internet is at home, then I suggest researching at a library or at a friend’s house that has internet available. It’s important to know what’s in your food, usually fast food deny people to see what’s in the food fast of what they are offering.
The government has been allowing some food corporations to put the money first then the consumer health. Some farmers have been allowing putting the money first then the environment and the workers’ health.
No, this is not fair because the cheap processed food isn't very healthy for you. The low-income families have to buy the processed food which isn't very healthy, but it’s the only thing that’s cheap. While the rich people buy the healthy food, which they stay healthy, but some people that can afford it and just are too lazy to cook, and buy fast food, even though they can buy healthy food, which isn't fair.
They won’t be able to afford the certain foods that are cheaper, but they will be able to afford fast food, which isn't healthy.
The hospitals benefit from cheap fast food because all the people getting diabetes, and other diseases, get the money, which is billions of dollars to treat those diseases. All that money that people are paying for hospitals can be used for other things important like to discover new diseases, new diseases that are even worse than diabetes. It is not cheap for everyone, there are even people that can’t even afford clothing, and live in the streets.
There should be education on which foods are healthy and which aren't. These education classes about healthy food should be for the people that lack education, that didn't go to school because they didn't want too, or they couldn't afford to go to school. This will decrease the risk of diabetes or other diseases around the world.
It should be a right because, we all should have the right to eat healthy foods, if this becomes a right, less people will get diabetes, and other diseases. A lot of people will spend much less money because less people won’t have to pay billions of dollars to fight the battle of their diseases because of eating fast food, instead of healthy food.

No, I feel that healthy food should be available to everyone, including people that don’t get very much income. If this food is available to low income people, the rates for obesity could drop, as well as diabetes rates and other food-related diseases. As long as this food is staying in the higher price range, people who cannot afford it or people who have low income will have to actually spend much more money on healthcare and medicine than what they are spending on a Big Mac.

If this healthy food was available to everyone and not just people who can afford it, there wouldn’t be any consequences! If this went into effect, people who have low income wouldn’t have to spend so much money on healthcare and doctor’s trips and instead spend money on broccoli and carrots. Once it happens, the next generation shouldn’t be very vulnerable to obesity or diabetes in the future.

’ We can easily make healthy food available to everyone. If we could get the prices of these precious healthy foods to drop, it will be easier for people who couldn’t afford it before to be able to afford it.

’Food can never be one or the other. There is a big amount of cheap food over healthy food, but that doesn’t mean that every single portion of food is unhealthy. There are many healthy foods that are not cheap which include carrots, strawberries, bananas, oranges, etc. The reason that food is always depicted cheap is because everybody buys that kind of food and not the healthy food too much.

I think she should choose vegetables. If they stay on a diet and eat vegetables normally, her husband’s diabetes could go away completely, unlike medication which only treats it temporarily. Her husband’s sugar levels would go down as well as your insulin levels,

With inflation rising and our plan to raise the economy, prices have gone up rapidly in many places: supermarkets, gas stations, and even liquor stores. Our economy hasn’t been the best in the last couple of years, and the government tries to make it better by making prices increase.

This processed food is always sold at fast-food restaurants for a low price. They make sure that anyone can buy the food, including families that get low income. Low-income families are only allowed to really buy this food considering how cheap it is and how expensive healthy food is.

’Without subsidies, it would be very hard for low-income families to buy the healthy food that is so expensive in our generation. They need the aid in order to be able to buy these healthy foods in order to keep down their blood sugar and insulin levels so they don’t have a higher risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or any other diseases related to obesity.

’What he means by this is that we make our food with loads of calories. Food companies put subsidies into the food, making the food even cheaper than before. So many people follow the American diet, and the obesity rates in the world are pretty high. With all of these fattening flavorings, this value will increase even more.

Many fast-food companies throughout the world, including McDonalds and Burger King, make millions and millions of dollars on the cheap, processed fast-food that they sell. The managers of these places don’t even care what they are selling, whether it causes health problems or not. All they care about is making a profit. Some of this cheap food, however, isn’t cheap to some people. To some people it is a way of life. Low-income families that don’t get very much salary from their jobs are forced to turn to this food and eat it daily. They eventually get used to it and it becomes uncheap to them.

We should have the policy on pricing for vegetables be changed to where vegetables and fruits are lower prices and low-income families will be able to afford them. They should also raise the attention on this subject by making teachers teach schools about healthy eating and how they can avoid bad eating habits and diseases. This will give future generations much more knowledge on the subject and keep them healthy and strong.

I think healthy eating should be a responsibility. It is a person’s choice whether to eat fries over some carrot sticks when eating a meal. There are some people in this world that will eat unhealthy food no matter what. They don’t care about what the cost of it is. They just love the food.

  16. I think everyone deserves equal rights to anything really just as long as it is reasonable and fair. Of course there are some people that need to earn rights back to certain things but never should have no rights just because they did something wrong. Us Americans may have consumed more than ⅓ of the state with obesity and type 2 diabetes but I believe we all deserve the right to access healthy food. I know it is very true that we drove ourselves to this state of unhealthiness but I think we deserve to get healthy food and earn it by making healthy choices.

I think healthy choices are a big part of getting/earning healthy food rights. At the point that most people are at they can't afford healthy food but they can get the item on the menu with some vegetables or fruits or just less calories and sodium just something that will make the choices they make a lot healthier. If most of america could show they would follow through with eating healthier and not just

I believe that the option of healthy food should be available to people of all incomes. Its not fair to lower income families to force them to deal with the medical problems that come with unhealthy eating. It isn’t fair to force them to eat that way because it is the only thing they can afford. Due to subsidies causing unhealthy food to be so inexpensive it allows these food companies to gain a death grip on the low income families.
It makes no sense to only allow people who can pay the higher price to get it. The government should subsidise more organic crops because unhealthy food actually costs everyone more money than healthy food so it makes more sense to make healthy food more affordable. If only the people that could afford to pay the higher prices for healthy food could buy it the cost of the health care to all the taxpayers would rise. If you make the unhealthy food more affordable than healthy food more people will buy it get health problems and cost the government more money in healthcare. Also everyone being larger from the unhealthy food will make daily life harder or everyone else. To make healthy food more available to everyone we should subsidise more healthy food instead of corn and other ingredients in unhealthy food. This switch in funding will cost the government no more than its paying now and it will encourage people to buy healthier foods. I think there is a pretty distinct line between healthy and unhealthy food. The distinction is entirely in the nutrition facts, primarily in the calories in my opinion.
Unfortunately in the situation of Maria Gonzalez's family it is really their only option to buy the medicine over the healthier food. Although, she could have avoided having to buy medicine altogether by buying healthier food to begin with. Our government policies have subsidised corn, because of this, food companies are making everything out of corn and corn products. This allows them to make things like high fructose corn syrup and other unhealthy chemicals and ingredients cheaply. This makes the more unhealthy food made with these ingredients cheap aswell. The cheap price of food persuades low income families to buy it because they get more for their money but really its not worth it. It gets them in trouble medically so they need medication and then they are trapped in a cycle of having to get unhealthy foods to survive. Without food subsidies though it would be much more difficult for low income families to survive because then even the prices of the unhealthy food would shoot up making it near impossible for them to survive.
When author Michael Pollan says, “We’ve skewed our food system to the bad calories, and it’s not an accident.”, he means that the food companies have set it up this way to trap people in the cycle of having to eat bad food and giving them no other choice. This also has a benefit for the health care system because more people need treatment making them more money. The food companies benefit from this unhealthy food they create because they are the puppet masters pulling the strings and making the money. The health care system makes money off of the problems that arise from the unhealthy food too.
Unhealthy food really isn't cheap with all of the hidden medical and physical costs. We can restructure our government policies to promote more healthy food instead of the unhealthy food by subsidising more healthy ingredients to start. We can also start putting more money into educating the public more about what is inside their food and how exactly it is made so they understand the problem. Ultimately though you can't force people to eat healthy.

    Part One

Since the matter of availability of healthy foods does not personally or directly affect some people I believe that the majority of people would be indifferent to the subject; I however have an opinion on the matter. Personally, I believe that everyone should have a right to healthy food no matter what their income is, and I believe that it should be less expensive than unhealthy food to motivate people to purchase it. If healthy food is not available/accessible to everyone, there can be several negative consequences. As individuals, obviously people are getting obese, getting heart disease, diabetes etc. all because they cannot afford healthy foods. Although certain people may think that since it isn't them who is being harmed by the aforementioned diseases and conditions it doesn't matter; it really has an impact on our society as a whole. Although you wouldn’t initially think of it, in the big scheme of things, it eventually leads to lower job performance on whatever job these poorly eating families have, and the performance of these people can in many ways affect us. Also, America as a whole is being seen as “fat”, since we have such a large obesity rate; and overall it does not make America look good, or as a pleasant place to live I can imagine-so that could possibly be affecting the economy. (less people visiting and moving here). Also, it is affecting the health care and medicare companies which could come right back around to negatively affect everyone else. So, think it isn’t affecting you? Think again.

Although it currently isn’t, there are several potential ways to make healthy food available to everyone- including low-income families who are not currently consuming it. I think one possible approach would be to have families receive incentives to buy local and in season produce so that it is cheaper and more accessible. Also, each family should be supplied with seeds so that they can grow their own gardens full of fresh, healthy, cost-free foods. I believe that for the most part, unfortunately, food is actually either cheap or healthy, but there are of course some exceptions. I know that when fresh produce is in season it is a lot cheaper than it is at other times during the year-this is not to say that they are cheaper than unhealthy foods, but they are most definitely more reasonably priced than they are the rest of the year. Also, when they are grown locally they are typically cheaper (and healthier) as well. But since the the ingredients in unhealthy foods are typically more obtainable since they are mass-produced, they’re cheaper to access and it is easier to process into the foods, consequently allowing for a fairly- if not extremely- cheap sale price. Especially compared to healthier foods.

    Part Two

In the film a lady named Maria who has a tough decision to make-pay for her husband’s medicine, or food. Personally, if I were in Maria’s situation I would buy healthier foods for her husband as opposed to the medicine that keeps him healthy. Although it is probably not the initial choice most people would settle with I believe that it is more effective for a few reasons. One is the fact that it is better to not be taking medication if you have the option, because it is not necessarily good on your body to be inserting artificial substances into it, so if he could avoid taking medication by eating healthier I believe that would be the best option for his body. If he were to keep eating unhealthy and be on the medication- both of those things in a sense would be bad for his body; because medications are not natural and if there is an option it is better to not be on them, and of course there is the fact that even the medication (if he continued to take it) could probably not reverse all of the damage that the unhealthy food did/is doing to his body. Part of the reason that Maria is in this situation in the first place is food subsidies. Food subsidies are effecting the types and costs of available foods. They were designed to aid lower income families and make sure they always had a meal on the table, by reducing the value of several starches and grains, therefore making certain foods that contain them cheaper. However, although these families are staying full, it is not with the right foods. Since the food subsidies started popping up, all of the unhealthy, bad-for-you foods have drastically decreased in price allowing for the healthier foods to become more expensive. Since all of the cheap foods also happen to be the unhealthy foods people are purchasing a much larger amount of those as opposed to the healthier-now more expensive foods; especially lower-income families who cannot afford healthy foods any longer. Although these subsidies were originally created to aid low-income families, are they really?

Since unhealthy foods typically tend to be cheaper than all other foods (especially healthy foods) low-income families tend to buy these way more frequently than they should, and consequently are getting diabetes and all kinds of obesity-related diseases because of the abnormal amount of consumption of unhealthy foods. This is not in any way, shape, or form fair to these families in my opinion. Although these foods are horrible for their bodies, families, would honestly probably not do very well if it wasn’t for these cheap subsidized foods that they are living off of. Without subsidies it would be very hard for them to obtain food. If they weren’t already they could go on food stamps, or have their children eat for free at school if they are not making more than a certain amount of money, but overall I think they would have to survive on very small portions of food without the aid of these contrastingly helpful-yet harmful subsidies. Our food system has intentionally been skewed to the bad calories, but why? As mentioned in the video-since our brains are hardwired for salts, sugars, and fats by making these unhealthy foods that contain these substances more affordable and obtainable it is harming everyone. Not only is it the only option for some families to eat this way, but others are probably getting addicted in some sense to these foods because that is what our body loves and are therefore eating it constantly. Unfortunately the food companies are becoming rich off of this unfair advantage.

I see healthy eating as a responsibility. You were given this body and it is definitely your responsibility to take care of it. I don't believe it is the duty of the government to take care of it for you by forcing you to be healthy. You should be able to eat healthy on your own because it is not anyone elses responsibility but yours. I also do not see it as a choice because being unhealthy causing almost nothing positive. It has negative impacts on your life and on the lives of those around you. So be responsible and eat healthy.

The food companies, the government, and drug companies, all receive money at some point during this process it appears, for one reason or another. On the other hand the employers, health insurance people etc. are being robbed of their money. So, overall cheap food is not really cheap for everyone, because although some people benefit, the ones who don’t are being hurt the most and it is damaging our economy. There are several ways that our government policies could be restructured to allow more access to healthier foods. One that I think of is making it mandatory that students are required to take a health class that teaches them about healthy eating. Also, they could encourage people to start growing their own gardens, and buy local and in-season produce so that it is more accessible/affordable.

I believe that it should be a right that all people are supplied with healthy food; or at least have the option to be. I definitely do not believe that this should be a privilege; I think that if people would like to have the healthy nutrient-rich food that is good for their bodies, they should not be denied this request simply based on their income level. I do not entirely see how eating healthily could be a responsibility if it is not first a right, so that I believe once everyone is entitled to healthy foods it is then their responsibility to decide how often they eat them, and that yes, people should follow certain standards and act responsibly with their access to these foods.

That would not be okay with me because those people who cannot afford it are oftentimes some of the hardest workers. Without them, we would have quite a hard time producing the amount of food (and other things) as we do. However, other people, that are not providing benefit to the community, should not have the same exact privilege. They can still have access but the workers will get priority.

We can’t. In our current position, it is not likely the people will pay/consent to pay increased taxes so that people they don’t know can eat healthier food. The cost of most things would not get funded; people do not care enough.

Most of the time it is. Less money can be spent shipping processed, unhealthy foods because they are packed with preservatives. Fresh fruits and vegetables need to be kept as such, something that isn’t extremely easy to do when they need to be taken cross-country.

’She should choose the father’s medicine. He is a worker and they need whatever they can get. If he gets put out of work, they will be having that much of a harder time sustaining themselves. While it is putting the children at a high risk for many lifestyle diseases, it is better than having them starve.

The government has strongly impacted the way we eat and what we eat. They have invested in corn, supporting it being fed to cows and putting it in nearly everything. This decreases the cost of the meat, making it that much harder to sell the more expensive, grass-fed meat.

The cheap price of processed food causes low-income families not to be able to afford anything else. Since they cannot buy anything else, they contract lifestyle diseases and are forced to spend more money treating them. However, the government may also be picking up part of that tab with our money. Is it a better idea to use our tax-payers money to supply healthy food or to deal with the horrendous results.

The entire food system would probably be different. Without subsidies, the cheap food would not be as inexpensive. Other people might invest in other types of foods, which could potentially lower the prices but the food system would be entirely different so there isn’t really any way of being sure.

We consume calories in unhealthy ways, with too much sugar, too many calories in fat. The government has helped this to happen, by use of subsidies. Furthermore, people are only too eager to gorge themselves on these calories.

The manufacturer completely benefits. They get all the profit, they take advantage of the people who cannot afford any better. Of course, it is not just their fault. They are egged on and encouraged by us, by our government.

We could stop awarding subsidies to food companies that produce unhealthy food and instead give them to ones that do the opposite. Volunteers could go around and educate people about healthy eating, and how to make it possible for everyone. Raising awareness is also another prevalent factor. Just to get people interested, or knowledgeable about the subject, would do wonders.

I think healthy eating is a responsibility, right, and a privilege. You have to earn the right to it like everything else by being a good person. Once you have the right to it, you must be responsible to keep it and to take care of your body. However, the right can be taken away when someone goes to prison. Lots of our tax dollars goes to feeding people in prison, which we shouldn’t stop doing, we just shouldn’t be letting criminals eat better things than hard-working citizens.

It’s not okay that healthy food is only available to high income households, because people all should have access to healthy food if they are poor or not. If low income families could get more money they would, but they can not control their income because they make what they earn and can’t change that. Low income families should have access to healthy food, and it would help society as a whole because we would be raising healthy, active, more involved at school children.

People are always complaining about taxes but we are paying the government for taking care of the unhealthy. 90% of people with diabetes are type 2, which is mostly caused by obesity. This can be prevented if we ate healthier food, but our options are limited because of the money issue. If healthy food was available for everyone, then we wouldn’t have all the problems of cancer and diabetes.

Unhealthy food is more expensive because it will cause them to be unhealthy, and they will have to pay thousands of dollars to treat their medical conditions. Many diseases are caused by bad food choices, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. It is costly to pay for the conditions compared to the extra 50 cents on the head of broccoli instead of the chips. Fifty extra cents or heart disease and diabetes?

She should get the healthy food. It will help his condition naturally, and they wouldn’t have to buy the medication if he gets healthy enough not to use them anymore. Pills are not always the answer to fix a condition, sometimes it can be fixed with a healthy diet.

Our government has made it to easy to afford junk food vs. vegetables. They have also restricted most of the farmers to only plant soy or corn. This is a huge problem because they are focused on making soy and corn not to eat fresh, but to eat after it has been in a lab, mixed with who knows what, and then fried. It also makes fresh fruits and vegetables more expensive because they aren’t being subsidised. It also takes more work like picking it instead of using a machine to separate everything.

It makes it a difficult choice to choose between healthy vs. unhealthy. They can want to buy some lettuce but their family would rather have something more delicious. If something taste better and is cheaper, why buy the gross, expensive cabbage. This choice seems obvious, and the companies knows we all crave salt, fat, and sugar, so they take advantage of what our bodies are wired to want to eat.

Low income families would probably have to eat less food or get money from the government to pay to feed their children. It would be more difficult to buy healthy food than a rich family, but it can be managed. They can use coupons for a dollar off carrots. Or they could save certain amount every week to pay for their healthy food.

The food companies did not screw us over on accident. They knew people like sweet, salty, and fat foods. They want to make money even if it sacrifices the health of their customers. In the quote he means that junk food is heavily subsidised and advertised.

The only people that benefit from fast food are the company owners. Not the workers or the customers because it is negatively effecting our health. Workers get diseases and have to pay for their health care. Their customers, us, are eating their food which makes us fat, unhealthy, immobile, and it’s extremely expensive to pay for the damage the food has done to our bodies. For example, oxygen tanks, prescription drugs, surgeries, check-ups, and health insurance goes up.

They could subsidise healthier food instead of all the corn that will just be made into corn syrup. They could have a policy stating all the negative effects of the unhealthy food. If we knew what could happen to us we would stop eating it. Like in anti-tobacco campaigns, just state all the negative effects and how much it costs, in health and with money.

It is a responsibility. We can go out and buy healthy food if we choose to. It isn’t anyone’s responsibility besides our own. It is really tempting to buy food that is always advertised to us, but really we need to step up and stop blaming others for us being unhealthy. Nobody force fed us that burger or those fries, we chose to buy it and eat it. It wasn’t an accident either. We blame the companies but we all know it’s bad for us. Yes, it is harder for low income families, but they can still manage to get less processed food.

If I were poor, then I would not consider the nutrition of what I am eating, much less be aware of the effects it may have on my body. I would eat what appeals and is convenient to me. However, if I developed a serious health problem from it, then things would be different. And for many folks today, that is the case. Eating at McDonalds is not a decision to be made; it is simply the cheapest and most filling thing around. It is satisfying and it is cheap. So what happens when it ends up having seriously impacts? That person may develop health issues that they cannot afford to pay for. In turn, they may feel very downtrodden, depressed, and have a negative outlook while society may also impacted by their inability to pay off bills for bad health. It is a vicious circle that not many people really benefit from.
In certain parts of the grocery store like the meat and seafood section, most of the food is expensive. However there are a few foods that are somewhat plain but when put together can be delicious, healthy, and inexpensive. Examples: oatmeal, chicken breast, canned tomatoes, rice, potatoes, onions, beans, carrots, spinach, etc. A person should always try to make healthy choices.
Certain administration have enacted rules that must be followed by food companies that make costs go up. Sadly, processed food cost the least amount of money--a deciding factor or us all. I think we all should step into the shoes of the poor every once in a while. Without subsidies, low income people might make deals with other low and high income people to start a business. The last thing we would want them to do is something illegal.
Humans have taste buds that are wired to crave unhealthy food. America’s food system has adapted to appeal to exactly that. We are a nation of McDonalds. Everywhere you go, tou can see one and it’s not a mistake. Today, America is paying the price as a consequence. Nobody really benefits from fast food in the long run except for the people who own are raking in the cash. If people were educated on nutrition and lived a healthy lifestyle, then we would not have this problem. Nobody ever regrets eating healthy. If the population did eat healthy, then the food industry would change with it. It should absolutely be a right to eat healthy food. Sadly, we are a nation of inequality and happy taste buds. We have dug ourselves into a hole. We are becoming obese. Big businesses are banking off of that and healthy eating is not possible for everyone.

I don’t think it’s right that healthier food only being available to people of higher class or with more money. I believe that everyone of any class should be able to buy any healthy foods. People of lower class or lower income should specially be exposed to healthy fruits and vegetables. Many low income families will be sick and miss work and school and become even more poor. The consequences are very dangerous in the long run. Not being to get a better education, having to work in a low salary paying job.I disagree with this statement of food is either healthy or unhealthy. I disagree with it because if you eat something that has been subsidized like a vegetable, I strongly think that it is not the healthiest choice compared to and organic grown vegetable but it certainly healthier than eating a hamburger.Maria Andre Gonzalez should get help or a way out of this dilemma. She should find support or food stamps. I don’t agree that she should choose one thing and stay put with that. If i was her i would keep buying the medicines for her husband but stop eating out and start buying healthier foods. The cause of her husband using all those expensive medicines is probably due to him not eating right. If he was to start eating healthy foods maybe the risk of a heart attack can be prevented, and probably lead to using or buying less medications. The government policies has affected the policies on foods, because they want money from the companies to be subsidizing their crops or foods which is unhealthy. This also makes our government look like a bad guy.The cheap priced processed foods affect low-income families because they always want to find a fast, something to fill them up, and cheap. The lower income families might start to think about purchasing vegetables instead of subsidized processed foods because their prices has highered. He means that we did this on purpose or the companies and the government was the cause for us to get triggered by their cheap foods. Especially since people are losing their jobs, or getting paid a poor amount. I believe that the companies and the government benefits from this ecause they are the ones who get the money. Families who can’t afford other foods come out loosing by getting a higher risk of getting a disease or being obese. Our government would probably make a difference but they would be losing money to do all these public stuff, instead of getting money for cheap subsidized crops. I personally think that you should be able to eat anything you want but still be responsible for what you're eating. It wouldn't be bad for the government to pass a law making fast processed fast food places healthier.

It wouldn’t be okay with me if healthy food was only available to people who can afford it. It isn’t
right that people who don’t have the best income aren’t able to have a healthy lifestyle for their children. Healthy should be at an affordable cost so that most or all consumers are able to comfortably buy products.

Not eating healthy can have a huge impact on someone’s life. By having a low income they person will probably have more health issues, such as diabetes or obesity. Thus, leading to more needs of healthcare and miss more days of work, deducting their pay even lower than it already is.

Good ways to make healthy food available to everyone would be to lower prices on organic foods, or to start your own garden. By having your own garden you are reducing how much money you have to spend on fruits and vegetables at the local market and, if you don’t use any pesticides, an organic garden.

Sadly, I think this is true. Food that is unhealthy is cheaper to make because the government uses subsidies to make it cheaper to mass produce foods like corn. Corn is the center of almost all unhealthy foods, and since corn is only getting cheaper to produce, cheap foods are made even cheaper and healthy foods are getting more expensive.

Maria should buy the vegetables because even though the well being of the Alfredo is important, the well being of the whole family is more important. If she bought Alfredo’s medicine instead of healthy food, their children would continue on a very unhealthy diet, leading to future health problems, resulting in more medicine or health costs.

The government has been using subsidies to make the more wanted food (fast food) cheaper to make and cheaper to buy, then making the healthy food more expensive because it is not being mass produced. The types of food that are available nowadays, are much more unhealthy no matter what, you will almost always find some product of corn in the ingredients.

The cheap price of low-income families is a complete disadvantage for them. With healthy foods so expensive, processed food is the family’s only choice being so inexpensive. It is completely not fair that low-income families are basically forced to buy food that will cause problems with their health in the near future.

Low-income families could try and avoid non necessities and try to just buy only the things the need to get by on. Like food, clothes, and a shelter. They could also try to make their own garden and begin to plant their own food, that would begin to save money over the years to come.

He means that our country has purposely endorsed unhealthy foods for profit. Since products that use corn, sugar, salt, and fat are incredibly easy to make, we advertise and sell them for a reasonable price. Then, since the prices are so low for unhealthy food, then the healthy food goes up by result.

No one benefits from fast food. The whole point of fast food is to give cheap, delicious food. Eating fast food not only gives no benefits, but it may cause severe health problems. For some low-income families, this “cheap” food, still could be expensive, just not as expensive as the healthy food.

If people knew how unhealthy the food they were eating was, they probably wouldn't eat it as much. Also, if people knew how healthy the organic foods are, people would almost always lean towards the better choices. Although people would think cheaper is better, if people would be educated on how much more life changing eating healthy is, more people would eat that way instead of just fast food.

I think healthy eating should be a responsibility, because it is your health. No one can convince you what you want to do, or want to eat. It completely depends on if the person wants to make healthy or unhealthy choices to their diet. Although it may be partially not the consumer’s fault they were not educated on such matters, they still have the responsibility to learn, and to make the best decision.

I honestly do not have a good answer to how we can make healthy food available to everyone, but we can either increase job payment (not a good idea), or try to increase the production of healthy foods and find a cheap, easy way to produce a lot of healthy food.

I believe that the film gives the impression that food is either cheap or healthy. Most healthy food is very expensive, and from my perspective, whenever my mother goes to buy healthy food from the store, her grocery bill is EXTREMELY expensive, with only around 30 items ranging from 50$-100$, for food that will only serve around 2-4 meals.

In the film, the mother (Maria Gonzalez) should buy vegetables and natural, healthy foods. Most of the healthy foods out there can help with blood sugar levels, heart rate, and can overall improve your health twofold. If Alfredo (the father) continues to take medicine AND eat fast food constantly, his condition will worsen, and maybe he might overdose even.

I believe that the government kind of aided the farmers in making the source of fast foods. The government wanted the farmers to grow something inexpensive and mass produce it, so they funded for unhealthy foods and whatnot.

The cheap, processed food may be delicious and cheap, but in the long run it is NOT worth it. Most low-income families spend most of their money on food, and sometimes even then it’s not enough. So what do they do? They try to find the most inexpensive food out there. I would do it too if I didn’t have a lot of money and needed to feed my family. Processed foods overall mess your body up badly. It can lead to heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, and diabetes. It is NOT fair that families like the one shown in the video have to suffer from both low income and unhealthy foods.

Most income families either have to buy less and less food, or they have to live off of food stamps, for example. The problem behind subsidies is that the government is subsidising the farmers who make the wrong crops. The government should be helping farmers who don’t grow corn or soy, but farmers who freshly grow tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, etc.

The author(Michael Pollan) means in the quote, “We’ve skewed our food system to the bad calories, and it’s not an accident” that the way we produce food, most of it is bad for you. The healthy food isn’t as abundant as it once was, because of the mass production of processed foods and sugar/calorie-loaded drinks/foods.

Really no one benefits from fast food. It may keep you alive another few days, but may shorten your lifespan in the long run. It really isn’t the best idea to eat fast food all the time.

I think that the government should yes, give incentives to grow and buy healthy foods, and to also educate the people more about eating healthy. It should be a right for everyone, and they shouldn’t be limited because they physically can’t buy it, or there is not enough food or money.

I believe that eating healthy should be a RIGHT for everyone. If they want to eat healthy and not get disease, they can. If they don’t, it’s their problem if they get sick. The main point of the USA was freedom, and in this case, people should have the freedom of choice to eat healthy or not, and actually be able to eat healthy.

Yes I think that people should be able to afford healthy food, because if not most poor people would be obease and have a higher risk of dying. There might not be enough for the people who actually work hard to earn it. Have a cheap healthy food grocery store. Yes I think its true, because alot of healthy foods that you get in a restraunt aren’t most of the time as cheap as fast food. If Alfredo’s life depended on it then she should probably get the medicine. His medicine is more important that buying healthy foods. They raise the prices and add on expensive taxes to make people pay more. The families with low income mainly would go for cheap food even if it isn’t healthy because they can’t always afford the higher priced healthy food. Yes I think this is fair in some cases because the families that actually work for the food should get healthy pick. Low income families would be able to afford food easier because they wouldn’t have to worry about the extra taxes to pay. It means that they’ve narrowed food down to the bad calories and on purpose so that buyers think that it tastes better. The low income families benefit from the cheap fast food because its easier to buy then more expensive healthy food. The government could take most tax prices off of healthy food so that low income families could have easier access to it. I think that healthy eating should be a privilege because you have to work to get the money to get the healthy food.

No, people have the right to eat healthy even if they cannot afford it. Shelters and food pantries should have healthy food available and not “junk” food or unhealthy food. America sees obesity as a big problem and having healthy food available to people who people who cannot afford it can help cut down on obesity.

Having healthy food available would required higher taxes or cutting down on government funds so the government can pay for the healthy food. This would:take up more land, cost a lot of money because they would have to pay the farmers to produce more healthy food, cause people to complain because there bodies want unhealthy food.

if you increase the healthy food then you can decrease the money the government pays for free health care and that would increase the money and the government could spend it on good food or the schools. This would help increase the healthy food to have it available to everyone and increase the money or lower the taxes.

This is semi-true because it cost less to buy a whopper and french fries then to buy the ingredients to make your own but you can buy a healthy salad without a lot of dressing cheaply. Fast food is cheap because the companies can get the ingredients cheaply, in large amounts and fastly made. In order to get the food to make it at home you would buy all the ingredients that took longer and in less quantities so it is more expensive. You would also have to make the food and spend money on the gas, water and energy to cook and store the food and wash the dishes.

If you ate healthy in the first place then you would not have to buy the medication and then they would have the money to eat healthy. They could buy a salad instead of a burger and fries when they went out to eat. This would be a win win because they would be eating better and they would still have the money to pay for his medication. When the veggies help then they could transfer to home cook meals with veggies and fruits. If they continue eating unhealthy then the kids and the Maria might need the medicine like Alfredo.

The government subsidies farmers to make corn and soy. Subsides framers is when the government pays farmer to grow a certain type of crop. The farmer will most likely grow that crop because they get the money from the government and the money they get for selling the crop. Now almost everything has either corn or soy in any edible product that was processed. The government affects the type of food available because they now can control what will be made in cheaply or largely and how much it will cost by subsidies farming.

    ReplyDelete

Low-income families cannot afford expensive food. They go to a fast food joint where they pay a dollar for easy, cheap and fast food. The family is not thinking about what is in the food they are thinking about how much food can we get for a little amount of money. Low-income families also do not have a lot of money or time so they go to a place where they can get in and get out.

Without subsidizing food low-income families might not afford fast food or “junk” food. They might have to buy other food but if you have a filling processed food or the less filling fresh fruit or veggies their hardwired brain would go for the processed food. The government should subsides healthy food or change what foods they subsides so is balanced out.

The food companies know that our brains crave fats, salt and sugar. The companies make sure that the included high amounts of fats, salts and sugar so we crave this food. The companies take advantage of this and people just go out to eat at a place that is fast, cheap and tasty. People eat this high fat, salt and sugar food and become obese because they are taking in more calories than they are burning of.The companies also want the money so they make it easy and cheap.

The food companies benefit and the consumer benefits because they indirectly allow and pay for the food they love. This is also unbeneficial to our bodies and to the animals. We are putting genetically modified food into our bodies and the chemicals that we cannot pronounce. This is cheap to the consumer when they buy the food but the are also paying a big price because their tax funds are going to the farmers, who sell it to the fast food companies, who sell it to the consumer, at the end we still paid more than we actually know.

They should subside different type of foods and switch and change what food they subsides. This will allow more healthy food and it will switch so you get a wide variety. This will also make unhealthy food more expensive and healthy food less expensive so low-income families can and will buy more healthy food

It should be a responsibility because they have the choice to eat heath and what they put into their bodies. It is not a privilege because we should not have to earn the right to eat healthy we should be able to. It is our responsibility to eat health but we need to be educated so we can make the right choices.

No its not okay with me that healthy food is only available to people who can afford it , I think that
it is unfair, and healthy food should be available to everyone

The Consequences of this is that people that have lower income buy cheaper bad food for you,but then they get health problems and then have to pay for that! So no matter what we're still paying, but people shouldn't have to choose between healthy food and medicine

The first thing we can to make healthy food available to everyone is to make it cheaper. I don't think that food should be either cheap or healthy it should be both, but right now in our society it does look like you either get cheap food or healthy food.

’Well if the doctors says he needs the medicine for health problems then she should buy the medicine but then again if they start buying health food and he gets better then he won't need the medicine so i think she should buy healthy food if

The government is giving the farmers subsidized in their crops because its cheaper, but its not good for us.

People with low incomes buy cheap price processed food because that all they can afford, but there at a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, and other health problems with isn't fair at all. Bad foods should not be the only thing people buy with low income, they should have the right to buy healthy foods as well.

’The problem is people with low income wouldn't be able to afford foods without subsidies because it would be too expensive without it. Thats why we either need to make foods without subsidies affordable to everyone or give employers a higher pay.

Michael Pollan is saying that the government knows they've skewed or food system to the bad calories, but they don't care. All they care about is money and what's cheap.

Its not really cheap for anyone because the consumer buying cheap or fast foods all the time have higher risk for health problems. Then we’ll still have to pay for health care and medicines.

A few examples could be the government could educate us more about what's in bad food and what's good for us. Also find a way for people to have higher income to have the choice to buy fruits or vegetables just as fast food.

I think healthy eating should be a privilege because some people would like to buy healthier food but they can't afford and buy cheaper fast foods instead.

-No, it would not because everybody has to have the right to afford healthy and not have any type of diabetes or have to take medication.
-Some people just decide to not eat healthy food and that is their problem not the people who care about them and want them to have better choices.
-To not have a lot of calories or grease in our hamburgers and to banned large items that make people unhealthy.
-Well that is true because unhealthy food is cheaper because it is really fast to do and easy so that is why is cheap.
-Well I think, she should buy medicine because I would rather have my family member beside me.
-That all the cheap food is junk food and the healthier food is more expensive than the junk food and that is why poor families prefer to buy junk food because it is cheaper.
-That the low-income families buy the cheap food and that is the junk food and that is not fair because they cannot afford the healthier choices.
-I don not know, but they could afford it but not get as much as healthy choices without the subsidies.
-He means that they decided not to have healthy choices and have cheap food, which was junk food that is bad for you.
-The poor families or people because they do not have enough money to buy healthy food from the market so, they decide to buy fast food that is unhealthy for you.
-To make the healthier foods cheaper and to have a market or liquor with fruits and vegetables all the time.
-I think it should be a responsibility because some people decide not to eat healthy food and others that do care about their health.

’ Personally i think it should be available to everyone because all most of this videos are show is that America is obese. If there were cheaper more available healthy choices i think that more people would choose those instead for example i would choose an apple over a Big Mac anyday if i had the choice. If you are the farmers you might need the money then you may want more money for your crop so stores can’t sell their crop for as cheap as we want it.Also the supermarkets probably need so income from the selling of fruits and veges.

’ I personally don’t think it is but then again i am not the one buying it. I say that food can be both cheap and healthy. If you see the price of beef its not that much more than turkey which is healthier.

This may seem cruel on my part but i say that you should look after your kids first then yourself because if you don’t they will probably get diabetes two and then they would have to pay triple the amount they had to pay in the first place. If he has diabetes then you should eat better anyways to help lower the bad stuff in him.

’I say the cheap processed food is effecting the low income families greatly. For example if you have very little money would you buy a carrot or a unhealthy meal from mcdonalds that will keep you full for a while. Me personally i would go with the carrot but i am pretty sure most other people would go with mcdonalds.

Without subsidies the prices of regular food should be cheaper because the subsidies would be there. Or the employer's would have to pay more or they would probably have a lot of angry employees. My family is a poorish family and we get by just fine with what we have i don’t have to many unhealthy meals. My family buys turkey instead of beef which is cheaper.

’ He is saying that most foods are bad calories which is anything processed which is basically everything in the supermarket. There is one little section for vegetables and fruits then the rest is mostly processed food.

I say no one benefits from fast food and also its not really cheaper its actually much more expensive because of all the health costs and the risk of diseases. The truth is it really isn’t cheap because you need so much of it to fill you up.

I say the government should educate people more about the food they eat. For example the lady said she didn’t know the food they were eating was unhealthy. I also say that they should lower the price of vegetables to a lower price for the people who aren’t exactly rich$$$. The government could also put a public garden in every city just so people have access to healthy fresh food but they would have to help grow it to.

I say healthy eating should be a right & a responsibility the reason I say that is because we can make healthy food as cheap as we want that doesn’t mean people will eat it. They will probably eat what they are used to eating which is processed food. If all people knew what was in their food or how they are treated they would probably going to stop eating it as much.

No, I think that healthy food should be an option for everyone, no matter what income range they have or what their jobs are. Everyone has a right to be healthy.’ Putting restrictions on the food people can eat leads to health issues and that is just wrong.

Financially-challenged families and people who can’t afford to eat healthier and more organically-produced foods get sick more due to lack of nutrients and other health issues caused by unhealthy foods. This makes it more difficult for them to go to work when they are constantly sick. When they don’t go to work enough they might get laid off, adding them to the many other people who are unemployed. This is bad for the economy because when there are a lot of people without jobs then the government has to pay more money that they could be using to pay for better education in schools and other things.

Food companies and food processors should’ stop putting so many terrible ingredients into the food. I don’t think they would eat any of the food they sell knowing what is put into it, so why should other people have to? They could also lower the prices for healthier foods like fruit and vegetables and make fast food and other unhealthy things more expensive. If people can’t afford fast food; why would they want to eat it?

Food can be expensive and inexpensive, it usually depends on where it comes from. If you go to buy vegetables or fruit from your neighborhood supermarket; you may find that the food is a bit more expensive than if you bought it from the farmer’s market down the street. That might be because food from the supermarket is produced industrially and with growth hormones and chemicals; while food purchased from farmer’s markets are produced more naturally and locally.

She should choose healthy food. If the reason her husband is sick is because he is eating too much unhealthy food, then it would be easier to pay for more healthy food for the whole family; instead of medicine for just one person.

Maybe if there were better rules on how food is made and processed; food companies might produce their foods more organically and that would make things easier for people who buy their products.

Low-income families are forced to eat more unhealthy foods because they cannot afford what would be better for their health.

I think he means that the companies that are producing unhealthy food know that there are disgusting chemicals and other things in their food that people really should not be eating. These companies produce their food this way because it’s easier and cheaper. I don’t think they really care about the consumer; but in reality they might only want money.

It may be cheap in money, but people have to pay more with their health. It’s easier for a lot of low-income families to eat at unhealthy places like McDonald’s than it is for them to buy vegetables and other organic things. But what is easier; cooking healthy meals at home, or diabetes? People shouldn't have to put up with eating unhealthy foods just because they can’t afford to eat good products.

The government could put less price restrictions on foods that are healthy and make foods that are unhealthy more expensive. That way people who are financially disabled will be able to pay for things that can be beneficial to their health; such as vegetables and other organic produces.

I think that everyone should be able to eat healthy food. Putting restrictions on people’s health is like putting restrictions on their lives. Just because you are financially disables, doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to be healthy. If you choose not to eat healthy food; that’s your problem. But if you want to and are unable to, that’s kind of messed up.

I believe that no matter what type of food it be, fast or groceries, that as long as the aim is to feed a poverty stricken demographic, quality will suffer tremendously. In order to feed the less fortunate, the food must be available at store very cheap. To cite Food inc., a head of broccoli costed a $1.29, with this price the distributor still makes profit. Seeing their costs for growing, buying seed, paying multiple stages of workers for cleaning and harvesting and distributing. If this price were to be turned any lower than a mere $1.29 for multiple stages of costs, than we will see increased issues with health problems in any type of food. Bottom line is that whenever a company is aiming at a poverty stricken demographic, the quality and health sustainability of their food will have to suffer, either side its put on, “Fresh” or “Fast”,is not relevant.

’ If my predictions are correct and there is no way to solve the poverty food crisis, consequences will remain the same as they were. Health problems, E Coli, and many more. We will see pharmaceutical companies making more money due to diabetes medicine, and heart problem medication.

Making food available to everyone is hard, we must raise the income of individuals, but not allow the inflation of food, this is very difficult if not impossible due to that fact as people start making more money, companies raise prices, and soon, the poverty line will get moved up. A lot of people might look down upon the food companies for raising their prices, but due to the fact that the amount of the dollar goes down as more are received they must raise prices, or else they will become broke. Then there will be noone to deliver our food. However food stamps are a great alternative, they do not cause inflation and allow poverty stricken people to afford a more nutritional type of food.

I do not believe that food is either healthy or cheap. However i do believe there is a certain ratio between quality and price. We must not forget that all economic classes of people must eat, therefore there must be a type of food that each class can afford. Therefore there must be a certain quality of food for each class. we also must not forget about restaurants. Some food outputted at restaurants like Denny’s or Carrows can sometimes run you ten dollars a person, and still remain incredibly high in sodium, sugars and trans fats. Therefore this myth that quality food, and budget food is very incorrect, there are too many factors that come into play for something as big as the food industry in America to be simply divided in half.

In a situation like this all aspects must be considered, essentially the concept of this question is should her kids be healthy , or her dad, I cannot answer this question for them, but I can say this decision should never have to be made, especially in a first-world developed civilized country like the United states of America. We should have moved beyond a crisis like this. However if the decision were up to me, I would probably have to make the choice of medicating her father, mainly because they will not have any income at all if the father will not work, therefore if the father is not medicated, the kids will not be able to eat at all.

’ Government policies have greatly lowered most types of food that are out the due to there subsidization of corn. since they have subsidized corn and made it cheaper for companies to buy. And since the large majority of food in grocery stores is made mostly out of corn, the price on everything is lowered significantly. and as far as availability, corn is massed produced, so any food made out of corn should be widely available, the government has done a major part in allowing cheap available food in the market.

The cheap price of processed foods has allowed many low-income families to afford food, that will fill up their young children. It has allowed them to spend much more money on other things that will help shape their child’s young adult life. It has created many oppritunities lower monthly grocery bills. this step, was a great thing that has helped in the push to stop poverty in America. This is very fair, the cheap food initiative is aimed at allowing low income families a better life.

’ Without subsidies, Low income families would not be able to afford food at all. In this documentary we see families that can barely afford enough food that is made with products that are government subsidized, how would they even begin to think about buying food that isn’t bought with government subsidies? some might have to take second or even third jobs, others will have to cut back on other things such as school supplies or clothing. All of these might help, sometimes it still won’t be enough due to the fact that these sections have already been cut back.

What the author is trying to portray in this statement is we as a country have that is so focused on calories, we forget that there are good kinds and bad kinds. The calories we get from unhealthy food do not carry any nutritional value and do nothing to further to help out our physical health. However on the other hand, vegetables and fresh-fruit calories have good calories, they supply us with plenty of nutrition and help us contain more energy and less calories are stored as fats in our body. What he means by its not an accident is because our food industries skewed our views on calories by vigorous marketing in all types of media.

’ The benefits of cheap fast food, is exactly in the title, it is fast and convenient. It seems that all americans are focused time and efficiency, and not quality and nutrition. Fast food’s other benefits include being filling. Fast food isn’t nutritious, and if you only have a few dollars to spend you won’t be able to get a nutritious meal anyways, so you might as well feel full right? in reality you have two options, eat healthy , and still feel hungry because you did not have enough, or eat very bad, and feel full even though your body is still very hungry. People who benefit from this is the working class and the poverty-stricken due to time and costs.

Because the government can strike down fast food advertising, the government must also launch their own advertising campaign. One that will match the power and strength of the fast-food industry. It shouldn’t be an infomercial, those have tried and failed, they should focus on a younger audience with cartoon characters, and make eating healthy seem just as fun as eating unhealthy seems. On top this, there needs to be a bigger school presence in this, it seems too often the schools help in having unhealthy food in cafeterias, they need to stop this, because if the schools let the children develop the habits, aren’t the school’s the real problem? they can see all the ads they want but if there parents or teachers make them eat healthy early on they will develop good healthy habits.

Eating healthy is and always is a privilege, throughout time the lower classes has always struggled to eat food, but this is no excuse for us.we are a first-world country that leads the world, hunger should not be a problem here, people should have the right to eat healthy. If they don’t we wont have the young minds we had when the country first started that molded are very way of life. We need to solve our problem with healthy food, if we wish to stay a world power and continue to to be innovative.

It would not be okay with me because everyone rich or poor should be able to purchase the healthy foods. We could make healthy foods cheaper trying to make it more affordable for everyone all over the United States.

I disagree and say it’s false because one can be both or neither as well. For example a food can be unhealthy and expensive. Like fancy restaurants with very fattening foods. Stores like that are very bad for you health wise and in your pocket.

She should choose Alfredo’s medicine because to me, family is what I hold near and dear to my heart and I think that keeping even though both is prefered, I would rather keep a family member alive. Maria is making the right choice paying for Alfredo’s medicine rather than keeping the family healthy.

The government is paying farmers to produce more unhealthy crops from subsidise, which makes fast food more cheap. This is the reason why soda costs went down 20% in the last 20 years and healthy fruits and vegetables went up 40%. Why? Because farmers are producing more bad products than healthy products therefore making unhealthy cheaper than healthy

Cheap priced processed foods affect low income families by almost forcing the families to pay for the processed and cheap food because of their low income. This is unfair because all people should be able to purchase healthy foods at a low and reasonable cost. Then again to this situation, at least the families get something to eat instead of dying from starvation, but it would be much much better if the families could get some healthy food for a change.

Without subsidise low income families probably won’t be able to afford food. Families might have to live with relative or maybe even other families. Low income families would be in danger if there wasn’t any subsidise. Only problem is that these subsidies are for unhealthy and processed foods. The government needs to fix this

What he means by this is that the government choose to make the bad calories cheaper for example corn. Corn is made a lot everywhere and it’s cheap so things like fries and soda are cheap too.

I think the farmers benefits from the cheap fast foods. Reason why I think that is because the government pays these farmers to produce more of the cheap abundant crops like corn and soybeans. The people don’t because they are the ones consuming these bad foods. So it must be the farmers benefiting from the cheap fast food. Also. the businesses benefit from the cheap and fast food.

The government should educate the young a lot more about food policies and what’s good and bad. Also if the government can do this, they can give the low income families a better chance of staying healthy by handing them some farming supplies to grow healthy foods. That would really help, but I don’t think the government will be considering that action any time soon.

I think eating healthy should be all on the choice of the consumer. However, that consumer will have to deal with the consequences him or herself with the choice he or she chose. People might want to choose healthy and good foods and others might want to choose more unhealthy and possibly more delicious foods.

No, it is not be okay with me that healthy food is only available for people who can afford it, because it is unfair for the people and families struggling socially and economically for be forced to eat unhealthy foods all of the time. Most of the time, the people who do not have a lot of money cannot help the situation that they are in. Not having enough money is forcing those people to eat unhealthy foods because they cannot afford them.

Although I do not agree that healthy food should only be available for people who can afford it, if the situation happened to be true, it would cause many negative consequences. The main negative consequence would be the health of the individuals who cannot afford healthy food and are being forced to eat fast food and unhealthy foods. By those individuals only having access to those types of foods, their health will start decreasing and coming upon more problems. For example, the cheap unhealthy foods, like chips, soda, fast food and much more, are the main cause of health situations like obesity, depression and type 2 diabetes. If an individual had any of these health threatening illnesses, it would cause them to eat even worse food than before because that illness would take more of their money away to go towards their medications instead if trying to buy healthier foods. Also, if more and more individuals get one of these problems, it may require the health care providers to spend more money on them which causes even the people who have no problems at all and can afford healthy food to pay more taxes to the health care system.

One possible solution to make healthy food available for everyone could be to come up with some type of healthy, fast but also cheap food joint that could eventually spread through the country. This idea would be relative to the fast food chains, but instead it would be available for for those with a low income. Another possible solution could be to pass a law to have unhealthy food joints and restaurants pay taxes to the government. the taxes that they pay would go towards the individuals struggling and unable to buy health foods. I believe that having this law passed would be a good idea not only because it would make healthy food available for everyone, but it might make the unhealthy eating places change their food so that its healthier. If the unhealthy food joints keep having to pay taxes, it would make them lose money because they will be giving money to the less fortunate and because they will be losing the customers who now have the money to go and buy healthy foods.

In my opinion this is partly false dichotomy but also true. For example, if you go to the grocery store and compare the foods, you will be able to find some healthy foods that are cheaper than the processed foods. But most of the time in order to eat the healthy food you buy it has to be prepared. Preparing foods most of the time costs money too. So along with buying the healthy foods that are cheaper than the processed foods, you have to spend more money to prepared it. You could end up spending money on things such as gas for the stove, refrigeration, and seasonings and spices for preparing the food whereas when you buy cheap, processed food it would already come prepared. So, when you think of all of the factors together, most of the time, yes, food is either cheap or healthy.

If the family could not afford both, she should choose to pay for her husbands medicine. If Alfredo was not able to have his medications many things could do wrong. Without his medications, Alfredo’s health would continue to get worse. Without the medicine that he needs, he could possible go blind. By Alfredo going blind he would not be able to continue his job, and his job is what is getting his family any food at all. Besides the health problems that could be causes by him not taking the medication, it also puts more stress on him and his family. His family and himself would constantly be worried about his health and the situations that he could be in. Also, By Alfredo not taking the medicine it could eventually cause death, and having a death in their family, when Maria chose to buy healthy food instead of his medication, would bring the family down even more.

The government policies have affected the types and costs of available foods by allowing the factories to produce more and more processed foods. The more people are buying these processed foods the more that the factories will keep making them, and the more people buy the unhealthy food the more expensive the healthy food becomes. The government is giving the food industry too much freedom and now people are having to spend more money on healthier foods.

The cheap price of processed food affects families because they are being forced to eat the unhealthy foods. While the price of processed food are lowering, the healthy foods like fruits and vegetables prices are getting higher because less people are buying them which makes it more expensive for the farmers to produce the food. The healthy food becomes more expensive because people like to spend the least amount of money possible, and going this direction would make them buy the unhealthy and processed foods. This is not fair because the people that want to buy healthy foods may not be making enough money to afford the healthy foods that are now going up in price.

  47. I am not ok with the fact that people that cannot afford healthy food cannot have it, only because healthy, natural food should be priced evenly or even cheaper than unhealthy foods, because the Government should only be subsidizing food that will help its citizens.

The consequences of not having healthy food available to people in all levels of income,
is that the people who have lower income are the same people that service so much of the daily commodities that people have come to take for granted these days. If all of the lower income workers got sick one day, employers would lose their business and the customer would lose their services.

Making healthy foods available to everyone should be a priority for the US Government, mainly because the government is only subsidizing very unhealthy foods, thus promoting the sale of unhealthy food and making them the cheaper option for people to get more food for less money.

I do not completely agree with this statement, because there is plenty of healthy foods you can buy, and because there is not a huge difference in prices between food that is unhealthy and food that is healthy, it is a matter of making your best effort to try and keep your family healthy.

I believe that this while in a tough situation, should try eating healthier and trying to live a healthier lifestyle, for the overall good of their family. Also, eating healthier should help Mr. Orozco to feel better and also help with his health problems significantly.

’The U.S Government’s policies have greatly affected the costs/types of available foods because the food that the government has subsidized from the growers and meat companies is unhealthy. The government’s decision to financially support the unhealthy foods has brought their prices down drastically.

The cheap price of processed food affects low income families because the cheaper
option for them would be to buy the most cost effective food, which often isn’t the best or the
healthiest. I do not believe it is fair, but only because the government financially supports the unhealthy processed foods, with tax payer money, people with lower income are taxpayers too, and they shouldn’t be paying towards unhealthy food subsidies at all.

They would still be able to afford food, if the government chose to subsidize the right kinds of food.

’Mr. Pollan believes that the government and large corporations have created their foods
to be cheap to produce and cheap to sell, to make a profit. It is only hurting the consumer.

The only people that benefit from unhealthy fast foods, are the corporations that sell and produce them. They are hurting everyone else.

I believe that the government should provide much more incentives towards healthy foods, and also, to completely stop the subsidies on unhealthy foods.

I personally believe that eating healthy should be a responsibility, on behalf of the person to make healthier choices. I have seen many
situations, and it is very possible to live on very little and still be healthier than the Dollar Menu.

No, I believe that healthy food should be available for anyone and everyone. In my opinion, it is a right to for everyone to be able to eat the best, and healthiest food that there is. i don't think that people with less money than others should be treated differently.

The consequences of people who are wealthy being the only ones allowed to eat healthy is that the other people could get sick from only being able to eat cheap, unhealthy food. If, by chance these people do get sick, they could develop diabetes and then have to spend their money on medication. If these people were able to eat healthy in the first place, they would not have to worry about getting sick and paying for medication.

I think that we can easily make healthy food available for everyone simply by lowering the prices. It should not cost more for a head of broccoli than it does for a burger.Food in its natural, unprocessed state is the easiest for those working and the best for you. I think that if anything, the processed food should cost more, because farmers and companies are putting more work, time, and money into it. By lowering the costs of healthy food, we can help families everywhere, and prevent sickness.

In my opinion, what is shown in this film is completely true. there are tons of fast food places people can go and eat the cheapest food there is. When you go to a supermarket, the unhealthy food is always much more expensive than the healthy. I think it is unfair because everyone should be able to have good quality, healthy food, despite any financial issues.

    ReplyDelete

I think she should choose the vegetables over the medication. The man is sick because of the bad food he is eating, so if he stopped eating unhealthy food, and traded it for healthy vegetables, his diabetes would go away. Once he is healthy again he will no longer need to take any medications so they will be able to easily afford healthy, good quality food.

Government policies have affected the types and costs of available food in extreme ways. today, the government spends $35 billion every year on subsidizing food. without the government subsidizing this food, the prices on unhealthy food would increase. with increased prices of this food, families would have to choose themselves if they wanted healthy or unhealthy food, without the excuse of money.

The inexpensive, processed food affects low- income families because of its price. In the film the mother says that the inexpensive burger is going to fill her kids up more that a small vegetable would. Low income families need to be able to eat. For some, that means only being able to eat cheap food. Most of these families just simply cannot afford to eat the more expensive, healthy food. To me this is extremely unfair. Just because families don't have the same amount of money, they shouldn't have to suffer. In my opinion, it is only fair that families of any income should be able to eat the healthy, nutritious food that their bodies need.

Subsidies make things like corn and soybeans cheaper, without these, more unhealthy food with high fructose corn syrup and things like it would increase in price. healthy food would still cost the same since there is no added corn products in it. so low- income families would have to choose between healthy and unhealthy food, because cost would not be as much of a difference.

I think that by saying this, he means that the food producers and companies have stopped caring about what they are putting in their food and more about what they are getting out of it. that have made the food even less healthy than before, and gone to desperate measures just to get the money they believe they deserve.

The people who benefit from this are the producers of the food and the companies that sell it. For the government it is not so cheap. They are the ones who have to pay for these companies who are selling the food.

Our government policies can be restructured in many ways. one way is to bring the price on healthy food down, so that everyone can get it. Another way would be to advertise healthy food. children and families everywhere are always being shown fast food and how easy it is. but what if they were being shown vegetables and how great they are? with more advertising, kids and families everywhere would have that extra push they might need to change their eating habits.

I believe that healthy eating should be a right. Wealthier people with high incomes should not be the only people that are able to get good, healthy food. in my opinion, the foods that companies are using to sell, which are being processed and put out of their natural state, should not even be an option. Food should be sold in the most natural state, and it shouldn't cost more to get it that way. All people have the right to eat what is made for them to eat, naturally, and that is a right that i believe they should be given.

I strongly believe that access to Healthy Food should be a Right for Everybody regardless if they’re Poor or Rich, Male or Female, or if they’re Young or Old.

Making Healthy Food only Available to people who can Afford it would be Inhumane and wrong not only in the fact that you're increasing the chances of a child getting Diabetes Type II, but you're also shortening the life of a child who has a great future planned ahead of them.

I strongly believe that food is not one or the other, but I believe food should in fact be cheap and healthy and that it is wrong to make people choose between one or the other. If we can create food that is cheap and healthy, then why can’t we put these two things together...?

I strongly believe that although they love their Dad, they should do what is best for them and go with healthier food options. It is what would be best for the Mom and the children, not just out of being mean.

The government's policies has affected the types and costs of available foods with taxes, patents, and new laws that are in support of the major companies.
The cheap price of processed food affects low-income families by only offering unhealthy processed food for cheap prices, instead of healthier non-processed foods.
This is the complete opposite of fair and is completely unacceptable to not just those who are affected by this, but also to the companies who are letting this go by unnoticed.

Without subsidies, the probability of low-income families being able even the cheapest of all foods (Fast Foods), would most likely be 3 in 10 people. The thing that we are trying to get rid of is actually what is keeping people alive and should not be tampered with, until we create healthier food that is not processed and is cheap/affordable.

What author Michael Pollan means by this is that we have created a system to where we have created something that has enabled us to purchase cheap fast-food instead of us being able to get cheap healthier food choices.

Well first of all, everybody benefits from cheap food no matter how much money you have/don’t have. It’s mainly the Lower-Classes that benefit from cheap, fast food but also most of the Medium-Class. Fast food is not cheap for everybody, because some people have money, some people don’t have money.

Our government policies can be restructured to allow access to healthier foods by... 1.) Put most of our FDAA officials who have never worked for a major brand company into the spots that help benefit us most. 2.) Take all patents off of our seeds. 3.) Don’t do things that will just fund the government. Think about the people you are representing.

I strongly believe that access to Healthy Food should be a Right for Everybody regardless if they’re Poor or Rich, Male or Female, or if they’re Young or Old.

If most of america could show they would follow through with eating healthier and not just abuse it.

I don’t think it would be ok if only people who can afford it should be the only ones who can have it. But now we have saturday markets and all the food isn’t expensive at all. When I go to Hawaii me and my family always go to down to the market and buy all our fruit and stuff because it’s not expensive.

If only the people who could afford it our world would be less healthy. A lot of people would be more obese. That would be really sad.

How we could make healthier food more available to people I would say to make it less expensive. Or put up stands that have fresh fruits and vegetables. Also close some fast food restaurants and put down some soda companies. I know it would make people mad but it would be better for the world.

Some foods are really cheap and not healthy then there are some foods that are really healthy. The markets are cheap and have healthy foods.

I think she should buy the food cause if she buys the food then shes healthy then she wouldn’t have to buy that much medicine.

They have made it to expensive so not that many people can buy healthier foods.

It has affected them because now they won’t have healthy lives because they can’t afford healthier foods. i don’t think it’s fair because their not getting any healthy stuff into their system.

I think that everyone has a right to healthy and nutritious food. When you eat fast food you usually feel like you have less energy but when you have healthy food you usually tend and the engery usually lasts longer than fast food

When your eat fast food you don't get all the energy that you would get with healthier food and that means that your would be less effective at your job. You can also get a lot of diseases like diabetes and other heart issues and that means that your health care will cost more then if your were eating healthy. Its is also a better idea for the companies to invest in healthier food instead of fast food because of the productivity that they can get done rather than taking a sick day.

If we start to subsidies the farmers the cost of a heather meals would be cheaper than fast food. then people that are on a low income could eat healthier and have a happier and better life and then the overall production could be bigger because some people would not be as tired and worn out when at work they would also be less stressed about their children having the healthiest meals and preventive diabetes.

When you go to mcdonalds what do your eyes go to first the salad or the big box of fries and a hamburger. They have advertised this in a way that is seems really cheap and large for what the price is but what you really get is something that can cause more damage than good. When we look at their menus we usually look at the 1$ menus and look at how cheap it is but what we are really paying for is a cheaply made meal does not have healthy things in it. When you go to the supermarket and look at the fresh produce you usually see big numbers for the low amount of food that you get. there is a down fall to fresh food tho because of the price if we were to make the healthy food cheaper we would be better at our jobs and also live longer and when we would get sick we would recover faster.

Its is a very hard decision for parents to make to either have your children have a healthy life for to have their father have a healthy life. In some cases it might be a better chance to provide the healthy food and have the father go without his medicine because the rest of the family might not get diabetes from eating all the unhealthy food but then you are putting the father at risk of having other problems without him taking his medicine

The government is thinking about the money side not the healthy side that everyone wants to be on. If the government were to make healthy food cheaper than fast food the amount of type 2 diabetes would lower a lot due to the fact that people would not always be eating food just because of the price but because it is good for them and will make them happy.

I don't think it is fair because of when they eat the fast food they tend to get into health problem and then need to pay for medical stuff and medicine and then they can't pay for the healthy food.

’We need to start to subsides the right companies and not the corn and other fast food processing companies they need to subsides the healthier companies so that the price goes down on healthier food goes down to the price of fast food and then the healthier food.

The only people that are making a profit is the fast food companies because it is very cheap to produce and sell. The people that are paying for it is the people that are buying it and the government. When someone eats fast food you think that it is just cheap but you are wrong most of the time when you eat fast food you can get a lot of problems with that come with the fast food like heart disease and diabetes and the people that are paying for that are the government.

I think that it should be a right because everyone has a right to a healthy and happy life even if they can afford to have very healthy food. The food that you eat should not be determined by the amount of income but by what your want to eat whether it is a hamburger or a salad it should be a right and its will help the country and over all help the economy and it will bring back local farming and fresh produce that will help the local farmers and will.

No, it would not be okay that healthy food is only available to people who can afford it because everyone has to have the right to afford healthy food and not have any type of diabetes or have to take medication for their diabetes. Healthy food should be available to anyone. It shouldn’t matter if you can’t afford it or not.

People that eat unhealthy food might end up with type two diabetes and have to take medicine for it. Others may end up with greater risks or have severe problems with their body system because of bad food. Some people just decide to not eat healthy food and that is their problem not that people who care about them and want them to have better choices.

We could make healthy food available to everyone by not having a lot of calories or grease in our hamburgers and have banned large items that make people unhealthy and sick.

Well I think that food is either cheap or unhealthy because unhealthy food is cheaper because it is really fast to do and easy so that is why its cheap.Healthy food is harder to do because some healthy food you have to grow and farm to make. I dont think its a false dichotomy.

Well I think she should buy medicine because i would rather have my family member beside me. The medicine is more important to me because you already have a problem with food and you have to take medicine for it and i don’t think just starting to eat healthy food will help.

The government policies have affected the types and costs of available foods because all the cheap food is junk food and the healthier food is more expensive than the junk food and that is why poor families prefer to buy junk food because it is cheaper.

The cheap price of processed food affect the low-income families because the low-income families buy the cheap food and that is the junk food and that is not good because they cannot afford the healthier choices.

Without subsidies i think low-income families wouldn’t be able to afford it as much but not get as much as healthy choices subsides. They wouldn’t have to pay as much money as they had to before.

He means that he decided on not to have healthy choices and have cheap food which is junk food that is bad for you. They have already made their food system of bad calories and thats how they sell their food and having a big change to healthy food might make them lose money.

The poor families or people because they do not have enough money to buy food from market, so they decide to buy fast food that is unhealthy for you. The company owners benefit from the poor because they are the ones selling the cheap food which is also the unhealthy food for you.

Having more healthy foods at every market so people can buy for example vegetables and fruits which is good for you. Also having all the fruits and vegetables reduced in price so pooor people can afford it.To make the healthier foods cheaper and to have a market or liquor with fruits and vegetables all the time.

I think it should be a responsibility because people decide not to eat healthy foods and others that do care about their health. Its your responsibility for weather or not you want to be healthy or you want to be at risk for problems with your body system. Other people think its a privilege and that too is your choice to make if you want to be healthy.

No, it is not ok to just let people who can afford them because when people with low income will not be able to afford the healthy food. When people who can not afford the health food will have the few dollars to go towards a meal and when it should go towards a healthier foods so, that no one should have to go through the obesity and it will have the bad part about that is you will have to the doctor to get the medication that they will need to keep their health good. If you are eating all the junk foods then you can get type 2 diabetes . Having type 2 diabetes you will have to have different medication they will have to take and that is a lot of the income that a lot of people don't want to have to pay for.

The consequences for the low income family will have to get the unhealthy foods because they will not be able to get the healthy food they are so expensive for the low income family. The family’s will be getting sick from eating all of the junk foods when they are out in about getting all the food that they need they can’t because they also have to get the foods that are in the other parts of the food pyramids. Today the fresh produces are getting expensive so the families can’t get the right foods for them to eat and when you get the right foods like the fruits and the vegetables. since you are not putting the right foods in your body then you need to try to get the right foods like the vegetables and the fruits.

Since the foods are getting to b e more expensive and that means that no one is going to buy none of the right foods that we need in our bodies and without the right things our bodies we will need to get the medications that we will need because their are going to the health condescends with the foods that people that are going to be sick more than you want to be. If you are a kids and not eating all the right foods that you should be eating and that means you will get sick more. If you are sick more then you will have toget the healthy foods.

The food is cheap if it is not healthy but if you want food that is healthy then it is going to be more expensive. I think that food should be healthy if that means that we have to pay a little more.If you want to eat more healthy then you are going to pay a little more than you want to. So I think that the food needs to be healthy because without the healthy food people will get sick and when people get sick that tells yourself that you need to eat more healthy foods.

The one that she needs to pick is the healthy foods because is you eat more of the healthy foods and that you exercise that you will have help you husband. The reason that it will help your husband is that he will lose a lot of weight and he will not the medicine. If you pay for the medicine that means that you are helping only one person in you family and you are letting the rest of your family eat the unhealthy food.So this is why I think that the mother in the video shuld buy the healthier foods instead of going though the a drive thru to get a meal for your family.

Our government policies are making it harder for the low income family to pay for the higher cost of the foods. The other thing is that it is making all of the rich people that they can eat the healthy foods. The poor family can’t eat the healthy food like the rich people can. That means that the poor family will have to pay for the medicine then they can’t get the right foods that we need to get healthy. When people have to pay for the medicine and they will have to go through the drive thru all the time because they can't get the right food that they can make a meal at home.

It affects the low income family because all of the foods are so expensive. When the food are so expensive so they could not get the healthy foods that they want. They had to get the unhealthy foods because it can make a lot of people have obesity. The reason that a lot of people have obesity will have to pay for medicine to get healthy. If they had the healthy food there will be less people will be obesity and that means that they are working hard to be healthier and the family will be able to get the healthy foods like the fruit and vegetable .

The low income families could plant their own fruits and vegetable. When they plant their own fruits and vegetable they will be saving their own money. When you save money you can get the fruit and vegetables that you need to have to make a nice meal for your family. When you go to a store that it just the meat and the pasta because you will have been growing fruit and vegetable.

He means by that is you really need to watch what you are eating because some of the foods you are eating could have some of the bad calories that we do not need in our body. When we go to the fast food places that they are give us the bad calories that we need.

The reason that we are having our foods be so cheap because a lot of us will want food that are cheap. The foods that are cheap are the ones that are so unhealthy for you. Healthy foods are so expensive so then no one will buy the fruit and vegetable. they are going to need to lower the price of the fruit and vegetable .

Growing healthier foods are really a good idea because with the growing of your own foods means that you can save on the foods that you need . You can get your family all together to help plant all the fruit and vegetables in your garden. There should be more to help you with the way of getting all the healthier foods.

Eating healthy is a right and it can be a responsibility because some people think that they can eat whatever they want to eat. The reason that they think that is that they are not going to get fat when they eat all of the sweets that they put in your body. At the same time it can be a right to eat healthy because some of the food that you get are home grown or they are grown right here in your home town. When you go to the grocery store that you get to know where the food is grown that how you can tell that it is homegrown in your city or in you state you can just know when it is coming from and then you can chose if you what your food to be grown there then you can chose not to get the food from that city, states or country because a lot of the foods that are there can be harmful in a different country because you do not know what they use on their foods .It can not be a privilege because you need to have some food in your stomach to live life and to grow.there are more reason why it is a privilege to have the food to be healthy because you can get to chose if you want to have fruits and veggies or you can chose to go with all of the sweets that you can put into the body that are really bad for you and then you are the one that chose the right things and or the bad things that can happen to your body and that means that you can you can have diabetes and that means that you will have to eat healthy for a long time and then you can eat a sweet thing here and there. you will not be mad at yourself if you eat a sweet thing here and there. because if you do not eat a sweet thing here and there then you can have low blood pressure and when you have low blood pressure then you are going to faint and other thing can happen to you. Your body are very fragile and when you get loww blood pressure that means that you are not getting the right sugar that you need for you body and that is bad for you so if you feel like are getting low blood pressure then you need to get something in your body, so that you do not fate.We do not to see people fate because that tells us that they don't have the right food or drinks in their body. This is why i think that this is a right and a responsibility for us to have the right foods for us to have and the right because some of the people in the world could have diabetes where they could have low blood pressures and they need the right foods for them and the other people have the choose if they want the healthy foods or not have the healthy food choices for the right foods for their body. You need to think about what you are putting in your body because there are thing that can go wrong with your body.

I think health food should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford it. Unhealthy food, while being cheap at first, can have many expensive long-term side effects, such as dietary diseases and raised health care costs. If more people had access to healthier foods, both our population as a whole would get healthier and health care costs would go down. By raising the price of unhealthy food, subsidising health food, or exposing unhealthy food more to the public, healthier foods could become more available.

Although I agree that unhealthy is cheaper than healthy, I think that this is not an excuse for. Some foods labeled as healthy can be full of as much fat and sugar as cheaper unhealthy food, but still be very expensive. Some healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables can be grown in a yard or community garden, making them almost free and much more accessible.

Mrs. Gonzalez’s decision is a very tricky one. On one hand, her husband’s medicine is treating conditions that he already has, and if treatment is stopped, his conditions will only get worse. On the other hand, the reason for his conditions are his eating habits, and if he continues to eat poorly than the amount of medicine and worsening of conditions will only increase. It’s a real “Catch-22”, but personally I would have to go for the medicine over food quality, then after (& during) conditions have lessened switch to a much healthier diet.

There have been numerous government policies on both sides of food health. On one side, some try to reduce unhealthy food consumption, such as Bloomberg’s proposal to ban certain soft-serve drinks in New York. On the other side, many federal laws have been passed flexing regulations and creating loopholes in food quality and inspection. Both sides have affected costs; many flexed regulations and loopholes are put in place primarily to lower prices.

Many low-income families face a problem every day when it comes to what’s on their plates at dinner time; small, more expensive amounts of healthy food, or plentiful amounts of processed, unhealthy food. Unhealthy food is designed and produced to be cheap, and sometimes even targets low-income households with advertisement of low prices. A family on a budget will care less about the quality of food and more about being able to afford food, resulting in more and more low-income families choosing large amounts of processed, unhealthy food over smaller amounts of healthy food. Although it is the cheaper choice at first, processed, unhealthy food can result in disease and expensive health care costs. Therefore, I do not think it is fair; the price of processed, unhealthy food is not really cheap at all.

If food subsidies were taken out of place, both unhealthy and healthy foods would become more expensive. But, by taking subsidies out, taxes would decrease. So, over time, low-income families could afford more food as food prices and taxes would level out.

Author Michael Pollan means that the average calorie intake is generally from unhealthy foods, and that this is not an accident but instead has been planned and put into effect over time with known intentions.

The only people who benefit from cheap, fast food are the companies who produce said cheap, fast food. While cheap, fast food may be the right choice for the consumer at one time, overall it contributes to disease and health care costs, which can be very expensive. But, the consumer is not the only one who does not benefit from cheap, fast food; the government is stuck with the majority of health care costs from disease onset by the consumption of cheap, fast food.

Government policies could be restructured to educate and change how we eat, just like how the government created mass-hype and warnings for cigarettes. The most effective response to the unhealthy food epidemic is already in place, at least at Foothill; to educate about the dangers of unhealthy food. Other policies, like Bloomberg’s bill and other unhealthy food restrictions could also be put in place to help regulate unhealthy food and give access to healthier foods.

Personally, I think healthy eating can be one of each, depending on what situation one is in. I think every American should at least have access to affordable, healthy food, if not food in general. If someone is a parent who has to feed their child, I think food turns into a responsibility, as they are in charge of choosing what food someone who can’t choose eats. I also think that in general, the amount of access we have to any food at all is definitely a privilege.
