ReplyDeleteI think the issue is reasonable. The proposed solution might make the obesity levels lower. But I also think they could find better ways to make that happen. They could find more facts about obesity and put them out there to inform people about it better, so that maybe people might make the choice for themselves to not buy the larger sized cup/bottle. I also think they could have the drink companies lower the sugar and/or sodium.
i agree with you on that and that why i say that it the peoples choice as long as they know the risks about the obesity problems and they are still willing to drink it that's there choice
DeleteThe government should still try to prevent it, no matter what the consumors want

ReplyDeleteObesity is a big problem in our state, That’s a fact. Nemours websites, sources and even just a stroll down the road can prove that. In New York the is a debate going on to see if large soda’s should be banned, and must be a certain size. I agree with the completely, while I also believe the road to stopping this epidemic is by the individual's choice, the first step is a little push from our government, to help us eventually make a choice to change our eating habits. The first step is to not drink that soda.
Now, a possible downside to this is that if soda is banned then people will just spend more and more money trying to get the same amount, which of course is a problem. A possible way to work around this issue is to ban free refills, or all soda in general.
Over all, just banning large soda will help us as a country to move forward and start making healthier decisions. It may seem such a small worthless thing, but there are so many calories in soda, and in bulk it gets worse. Soda’s not good for you, lets make a law, then lay off the sweets.
Alek Carrillo EDA period 4 Carr
DeleteIf this law were passed then it would be a violation of the peoples rights because if they feel like spending there hard earned money on an extra large soda they should be able to because they're free to do with it as they choose. Also putting this law into place restricts the liberties of being free and its their responsibility to say weather they want a large sugary drink or not, not our governments.

I believe soda shouldn't be banned because people have a choice on whether or not they want to drink it. People also can decide whether or not how much soda they want to consume at once because otherwise they could have it every once in awhile, most Dietitians recommend this. Soda is not a main necessity of obesity it’s more the food, because there is not always soda when you go everywhere people have water or even juice but then again juice is almost the same as soda so many people going out could be drinking juice as well, that could be a big contributor not just soda. Another reason not to ban soda is, why don’t they ban fast food instead, that is the biggest contributor to health problems and obesity why not all the greasy, oily, hydrogenated, enriched food. People aren’t looking at the whole picture here, I mean yes soda is bad for you but do you really think taking away soda is going to do anything. If you do that you mine as well just say no one drinks anything but water in America because there are juices, and other drinks and beverages that are worse than soda. These are some reasons why I don’t think soda should be banned.
I do agree with how taking away the soda companies wouldn't be much of a change, but it would help the people who are addicted to it to stop and think about all that they have consumed. Banning all the fast food industries would also include taking away the soda too. Water is basically the best choice to drink, i mean eve juice can contain too much sugar. Taking away the over sized soda drinks could make the health of others just a bit better.

ReplyDeleteI think the law should be accepted, because soda isn’t something everyone 100% needs. Soda can be nice to have at times, yes it tastes good, but it’s degrading all the enamel in your mouth. With the amount of glucose (sugar) in soda is more sugar then we should be taking in a day. A 12 oz. Coca Cola can has 39 grams of sugar in total, Joy Bauer, a certified R.N. stated that we should only have 32 grams of sugar a day. A 20 oz. bottle has twice the amount of sugar that we should be taking in. Drinking soda can turn into a habit, you can always crave it and you won’t ever stop. I think that if the law passes it wouldn’t be bad, because the rate of over weight Americans could start going down, because they wouldn’t be taking in unnecessary sugar.
well but think about the people choice, they have a choice of being in bad condition's if they want. People are not going to stop drinking soda because is really addictive. Especially the investors of all those companies that are good in there economies like COCA-COLA. How do you know there good in the economy well there paying for the commercials people are buying it. Even in the super ball commercials.
DeleteRichard Soprano Period 4 Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the law. I think people should know how much soda they should drink. There are still drinks that are worse for people than soda and no one has band them so why should soda be band. If the government controls us here that is giving them access to what we eat and drink. It is saying goodbye to our rights and saying hello to absolute control by the government. I think that we as Americans should be able to eat and drink what we want as long as we are responsible with. If people get disease from too much sugar it isn’t just the soda that has a lot of sugar in it. If 16 oz. soda isn’t there people will just buy one size down and get more refills making people drink more for more money. If this passes the government will be able to control more of what we drink then it will be what we eat. And finally what we do.
Sachi Tan Period 4 Mrs. Carr
DeleteI disagree because although soda isn't the most unhealthy drink out there, it is one of the most popular and more widely available than any other unhealthy drinks. Also, the government wouldn't be taking absolute control over what we eat and drink, they're just trying to help us make healthier choices. Banning all soda would be a step too far, but just banning the oversized sodas is a very reasonable solution.Soda isn't the only contributor to obesity but it does affect a person's health so we need to take the small steps toward lowering obesity.

DeleteHealthier choices that would be like making people exercise without giving them a choice. What about milkshakes that contain larger quantities of sugar and pretty wide.
Blake M. EDA Period #4 Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteI think that the soda ban was a good idea but not thought out that well. There are many things out there that are far worst in calories and sugar than soda. I know that a large French fry is far worse than a 16oz. soda. A large French fry form McDonalds has 500 calories and 25 grams of fat. Not to mention the 350 mg of sodium that they put in it. A 32oz. coke has 310 calories and 0 grams of fat. Don’t get me wrong all of the calories and fat in the coke are not necessary. But if the Mayor wants to make people healthier is soda the way to go?
With this proposed bill there are many loopholes that business’ and people could find to get there soda that they want. The ban limits the size of the soda served. It says nothing about not being able to get a refill. And by doing this you will be having double of the serving that the bill limits. But honestly you are not doing anything wrong.
You have a good point that there are far more worse things than soda but this law is just a step in the right way. This ban is not saying it garuntees a full healthier life but its saying that it will help extremely. It is also a step in the right way because these large sugary drinks are one of the top causes for diabetes, taking away the large size is taking away a ton of sugar and that is a great change. To go with your comment about the french fries its an easy thing to just ask for none of the extra salt that is put on. It is also non-believable that a coke that large would have zero grams of fat. The "Soda Law" is a good thing and i do believe that it can change things.
DeleteOswaldo R. EDA Period #4 Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteMy side on this argument is not to ban sodas. My reason is if we ban sodas, people that like drinking sodas will start a riot, which will cause people to get badly injured. It will get worse over time, if the people who like sodas don't get what they want. We have to compromise that both sides agree on, or there will be major problems. It's unfair to just ban soda to the people who really like to drink it, it's their choice to drink it. If you don't drink soda, then it's not a problem to you. We don't want a riot like the Great Depression? Think about it, do you really think this is worth banning sodas?
Why would people start a riot of soda banning? If we ban sodas, people would be healthier and have a better life. Banning sodas is a great idea because people with pick healthier drinks then soda. When people drink sodas, they are also having a bad meal. This would be great for everyone because they will be having healthy meals and drinks.
DeleteBrilliana G Per 4, Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteI agree with the the passing of the soda ban because of the following: obesity is a problem in the United States and sugary drinks are a leading cause of obesity, drinking soda increases the risk of diabetes and other health problems, and people will drink large quantities of soda anyway if they choose to. Considering that most Americans drink sugary drinks (that are one of the main causes of obesity) a ban on soda would be a reality check for those who do not understand the health risks that they are taking by consuming large amounts of sugary soft drinks. This would also help those people prevent future health problems by limiting the amount of soda they consume. Since restaurants can also offer free refills for sodas with smaller cups, people can drink as much soda as they want. Therefore, the soda ban is not really limiting anything but the serving size that restaurants are allowed to sell. Banning soda would be just one small step in making a change in our society for the better.
I dont agree with this because It doesnt make any sense. If people can get refills, why waste your time going through all this trouble passing this law? Also people can choose to drink it. Its not the soda doing it, Its the people themselves making them be over weight.
DeletePat H. EDA 4, Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the “Soda Ban” law that wants to pass. I think that banning soda would be banning someones freedom. Banning soda would be like banning sports, someone has the right to do it or not, but its a personal choice. Someone should have the right any amount of soda size, it’s their life, let them life it like they want to. Cigarettes aren’t banned but yet it can damage your lungs and kill you, why ban soda then? A reason not to ban the limit you’re allowed to buy of soda is at the movies, if you’re only allowed to buy a 16oz soda, and its a 3 hour movie, you’re going to finish that soda in the first hour. Most people don’t want to leave their seats to go buy another drink during the movie. So if this law passed it would mean you’re allowed to a 16oz soda, but yet you can buy as many packs of cigarettes as you want?
People drink way too much soda though, People drink way too much in one day. Soda should be a treat, but people don't understand that and drink it on a daily basis. Soda also isn't good for you. Too much soda isn't helping anyone, soda causes obesity and medical issues. Why would we drink it if it's not doing us any good?

I agree with the "Soda Laws" because its a way to make healthier choices for some who dont decide to be healthy. It is a very good idea to take away the large sized surgary drinks because its less fat and it is the size that most unhealthy people choose. This law would help alot of America's obesity, not to take it all away but to help with those weight issues and maybe even help lower diabetes. Everyone complains about how much they need to lose weight or they are tired of getting made fun of, this law will fix that. Soda is just as much fattening and bad for you as a cake or a donut so taking that large fattening drink out helps just as much as not eating a donut or piece of cake. I also agree with this "Soda Law" because the very large amounts of sugar and sodium in a soda are super bad for your body. People who regularly drink soda are most likely to be overweight and diabetic and this law will change that.
Obesity is a life style disease. By removing a soda you are not curing that person of his disease. A soda is proven to be less harmful than a large big mac or other unhealthy greasy messes. Soda is a drink consisted of carbonated water witch is not bad, and a syrup for flavor. In the past couple of years soda companies have been working to decrease the amount of calories and sugar in the syrup. Now dr. Peper has a soda called Dr. Pepper 10. This soda consists of 10 calories and 4 grams of sugar. This is not bad. If you go and get a Hi-c fruit punch which is only 6.5oz. Instead of 12oz. like a soda. This Hi-cv will contain 90 calories and a whopping 25 grams of sugar. The recommended amount of sugar for a man of 25 is only 75 grams. You figure that this smaller fruit punch takes up 1/3 of his total sugar a day is just illogical. A Glazed doughnut from Dunkin Doughnuts is only 260 calories and 12 grams of sugar. A 32 oz. coke has 310 calories and 0 grams of fat.

ReplyDeleteThe issue of banning large sugary drinks is important to discuss because there is a lot of obese people in the United States and banning large drinks would be great because that way other people could not become obese and could stay healthy. I my opinion, I think they should only have one size drink and that way people would not have to buy large drinks. They want to ban large drinks because they want people in the United States to be healthy and not become obese, but some people won’t listen and just go out to fast food restaurant and eat there because they are too lazy to cook for their own family and to have a healthy meal. It’s ok to get large drinks, but some people are lazy and do not do physical activities or exercise, so it’s better to ban large drinks and only have one size drinks. The best way to handle this issue is to have a lot of people on your side to ban large drinks and hopefully they will ban large drinks for sure. When people get large drinks, they are also getting a big hamburger and large french fries and when they get that, they are already done for their calories for a day which is really bad for the people who do not do physical activities and do exercise.
I see your point, staying healthy is very important. What do you think the people that like large drinks will do about it? They will start a riot, like the riot in the Great Depression. Both sides have to compromise the government can't do something the people don't want it to happen. Instead we can have education for everyone about what foods to eat and what not to eat. Some fast foods have free refills, so it won't do any good banning large drinks, while they can use the small drinks to get free refills.
DeleteKlio M. Period 4 Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteI am against the soda ban proposal because if it was passed it would be completely ineffective. If this proposal was passed it would violate our rights; the constitution still needs to be considered. We can’t give the government the power of restricting what we eat and drink because it will lead them to think that they can restrict other parts of our daily lives. What we eat is a huge part of our rights, if this law was to be passed, we would be giving away a huge part of our freedom. You can’t give them an inch because they’ll take a mile. You have to think about the companies also, they would lose so much money. It’s not the companies fault that humans don’t understand the concept of moderation. This proposal won’t do anything except give the government unnecessary power. People will still be able to go out and buy the liters of soda at Vons, which shows how ineffective it would be. All the proposal is doing is banning extremely large quantities of soda which won’t do anything; people could still get multiple refills of the smaller size. Technically, what the big soda cups are doing is saving plastic. Rather than people buying multiple drinks they just buy one big one. Soda is not the main issue of obesity. This proposal should not be passed because it is ineffective, and will violate people’s rights.
Nathaniel D. Eda Period 4 Mrs.Carr
DeleteYou say that its not the companies fault that humans dont understand moderation, well portion sizes have become way out of portion because fast food joints are cheap and sell a large soda for a dollar. I think that this proposal could be effective if you try it, You said that "People will still be able to go out and buy the liters of soda at Vons" but i disagree i think people mostly drink alot at fast food places because it is cheap. I disagree that if this proposal was passed it would be a violation to our rights because there not saying that we cant eat or drink what we want there just making the size smaller, Also what you said if people still want large amounts of soda they can go to vons.
Conard W. EDA Period 4 Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteI agree because people are becoming overweight, soda is helping to cause obesity, and eighty percent of Americans don’t do any physical exercise, therefore they are most likely to become obese. The solution that the mayor has come up with is to ban soda in restaurants, cinemas, street vendors, and stadium concessionaires. The people that oppose it say that the government shouldn’t intrude there personal decisions about what they want to drink or eat. They oppose because they want to eat or drink what they want to eat or drink not what the government wants them to eat or drink. Americans cherish there freedom to live as they choose. This is a good issue and I agree with it because soda does come with all of the fatty foods you eat and it does contribute to the obesity problem in the United States. The only fault I see with this is that it should not be banned everywhere, only where there is a lot of obese people and in larger cities.

well i see what you mean. but people need to make their own choices. they don't have to get soda in a restaurant or stadium. there's lots of healthy drinking choices they can pick . well you see. the problem is nation wide it cant only be banned where there's lots of obese people or a big city. there's big gulps and big 16 ounce sodas in every corner of this country same with fast food chains like McDonald's burger kings Wendy's etc. we have the liberty of doing whatever we want. its a free country if people want to get fat its their choice if people want o get skinny and do some exercise its their decision.

ReplyDeleteI approve of this law that concerns the ban of large sugary drinks in New York because people do not realize what they are doing to their bodies. I understand that it is a right to be drinking whatever you want and however much you want as long as it is a legal substance, but it is so unhealthy. People are becoming more obese everyday and they are also becoming very ignorant about it. Americans are too obese and things need to change, something has to be done. I think that this is a good start to helping people realize that they need to take better care of their bodies. If we start making people eat healthier there will be a lot less obesity and diseases to take care of and then people will feel better and lead longer lives. Being healthy is so important and people do not realize that. As a society we need to make changes to the way we take care of ourselves and i think that this is a good start.

DeleteYes i agree soda is not healthy but I don't think the large size sodas are to blame. I think it is the free refills that are causing people to be obese and unhealthy because they think that just because there are free refills they should get one. Also have you thought about the companies? How will this affect them? They get a good amount of profit from the large sodas. Also yes people should be healthier but soda isn’t the only thing that causes obesity. There are tons of other foods and drinks that cause obesity.
Yes companies do make money but if they stop making large sodas then there will be nothing to worry about or pay for.
DeleteYash N. EDA Period #4 CARR
ReplyDeleteI do agree that obesity is on the rise, but I don’t believe banning large quantities of soft drinks will solve the issue of obesity. If the government wants to stop obesity, it isn’t possible without total control over people, which hopefully doesn’t happen. One thing the government can do is ban the pointless fast food commercials, because all they do is invite more people to become obese. Another solution would be for the government to set a limit at the amounts of saturated fat and sugar at fast food restaurants.
If the government continues with a ban of larger soft drinks sizes, like the articles stated, there will always be free refills!
In conclusion, if the government bans large amounts of soft drinks, America’s obesity rate will not drop!
But even if the government bans the fast food commercials it doesn't get rid of the unhealthy food? Cutting down soft drink sizes could be a small step to reduce obesity. And If they did that not all fast food restaurants give out free refills. You can't drop the obesity rate by doing nothing. You have to take small steps to make a change. Banning the larger soft drink sizes could be that first step to keep people healthy.

ReplyDeleteThe issue on banning sugary drinks, is an important topic but banning them won’t work. There are too many places out there to ban them from. Yeah, maybe at the beginning it’ll work, but it will just get people mad and they will just want the drinks more. Like at Supermarkets for example, how are they going to ban them there? There are too many places where these kind of drinks are being sold at. And honestly I think that if it becomes a law, people are just going to do it illegally. In the end, people do have a right to eat/drink what they want. I think the state has done or tries to do a lot to educate people on what is better for them, if they don’t listen it is up to them.

Well Naive, you have a great point. But yes it is possible to ban soda. For one thing look at "Hostess" they aren't in stores anymore, "Hostess was a world wide product, people aren't going crazy for them. And another thing is if the "law" actually happens I am pretty sure the companies are going to close down. So how will people get it illegally?
Well first of all you spelled my name wrong! And yeah you made a point there too, but they won't close down because the banning is only in New York, not everywhere.
DeleteSachi T. Period 4 Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteI agree with the mayor Bloomberg because the law is a good start to the fight against obesity and various other health risks we Americans have aquired from years of unhealthy habits. Over time, fast food chains have made portion sizes larger and larger, changing the way people think of an “appropriate” amount to drink or eat in one sitting. This soda ban would help people who regularly buy large sodas, causing them to drink less sugar than they otherwise might have. This law does not restrict the freedom of the people, like many are arguing, because you could just go buy another large soda at a different store. You may think this would defeat the purpose of the law but the main reason people drink soda or fast food is because its quick and widely available; if the oversized sodas were no longer available, then most people would simply get used to consuming smaller portion sizes. Other people claim that just banning large sodas will not make a dent in the obesity rates, that if you truly want to make a difference why not ban burgers and fries? However, you can’t just end obesity over night, these solution take time, and banning sodas are just the first step, because you have to start somewhere. This ban also does not apply to convenience stores and some restaurants; but if the ban tested and found effective in public venues like movie theaters, then the ban could be extended to cover those places too. This law is a good solution because who really needs to drink more than 16 ounces in one sitting? Peoples’ unhealthy decisions don’t just affect them, they affect everyone and their tax dollars. On a whole, the soda ban is the beginning of the fight against obesity in America, something that affects us all.
Richard Soprano Period 4 Mrs. Carr
DeleteWell if your saying that people can just go to the store to get the larger soda than that would give people more soda for more money. Besides this would give the government a foothold to get closer to doing more things to affect our lives. Such as controlling what we and maybe later what we or how we do it. There are way worse drinks that contribute to obesity that the government has done nothing about so why start with soda now.
Alex R.EDA P4.Carr
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposal to ban oversized servings of sugary drinks. This issue does cause obesity problems but drinking oversized sugary drinks is not the only effect on weight gain. By banning soda, the rates of obesity might decrease. Some people say that by banning soda its an infringement on their personal freedom and i agree but for the people that care for their body,we should not be selling soda’s that are very cheap and has easy access. Not having soda could be a problem because it does interfere with a personal decision and their own soda but overall it helps everyone not having to deal with obesity. With banning soda, someone could find a way to produce another beverage that taste really good but does not have a lot of calories in it like this drink called ICE. The government has restrictions on alcohol beverages for our own safety and it does save lives so why can't soda be banned so it will do the same?
Evelyn S, EDA Period 4, Mrs. Carr
DeleteI agree with your that says drinking over-sized sugary drinks is not the only effect on weight gain. Banning soda is an infringement on somebody's personal freedom, as you stated. The people that care for their body and do not wish to drink soda do not have to. Everybody is different, just because they don't want soda does not mean that it must be banned and limited to everybody else. To answer your question, soda does not affect people like alcohol does. I think that alcohol is more dangerous than soda. Soda does not affect the way that people think or cause brain damage due to excessive drinking. I don't think the risks for drinking soda are nearly as dangerous as the risks for drinking alcohol.
Alek Carrillo EDA period 4 Carr
ReplyDeleteThe sodas and sugary drinks are a big problem in the U.S. and in New York they are actually doing something about it. In New York they are reducing the size of all sugary drinks for a reason. The reason why they are doing this is because sugary drinks and sodas 7% of the Typical Americans diet which eventually can lead to obesity and diabetes. Another reason why they should enforce this is because two sodas a day can raise a woman's heart disease rate by 40% which I think is outrageous and I think that the soda should be limited to help prevent some of these from occurring.

DeleteAlec, I feel as you may be confused. Did you vote Yay or Nay on the survey? Is this an error?
It's perfectly alright. I will challenge my self by arguing you on the opposite side.
Will banning a large soda really do all this? In 1920 there was a "Prohibition" on alcohol, in which alcohol was banned and illegal for anyone to drink, but all this cause was for people to drink MORE and get arrested for doing so, riots broke out and alcohol was getting sold and transported ILLEGALLY more than it had when it was legal. I feel something (not as dramatic) may happen if this is banned. People are just going to spend more money on refills to get their fix of soda, people are addicted to it. Just a simple "YOU CAN NOT DRINK THIS"
will not stop someone. something needs to be put in place so that the individual can make the choice not to drink the soda, or eat the greasy burger. A law like this doesn't help but may worsen the problem.
Of course there still is the epidemic you spoke of, as a country we need to fix this. Something like a law for the companies and restaurants, instead of just banning one thing, but to create a ban, or just a guideline of what should be sold, and how health it must be.
Haley G, Period 4, Carr
ReplyDeleteI agree with soda laws. I don’t think everyone should be drinking soda all the time. Soda isn’t the best drink choice. It’s sugary, unhealthy, and full of unknown ingredients. soda has no nutrition value what so ever, It’s also full of calories.I know that soda tastes good, but it’s very harmful. Soda is a “every once and awhile” treat. People abuse soda, they drink continuously when you’re only supposed to drink it maybe once every couple months. That can’t be good for you, I see people drinking soda all the time, they replace water with soda. If they keep up these habits, they are going to pack on the pounds. People need to think about the health effects before they drink.
Ever heard of Pepsi Zero? Coke Zero? That takes care of the calories right there. It's quite easy to find the ingredients on a soda can. Yes, people "abuse soda" but some people can burn off the calories, you can't just think about the obese people drink soda. The law would mean like no 32oz sodas, it only restricts it to public places, people will still be able to buy 2 16oz and 12-packs of sodas, the law can't compeletly terminate soda for good. Soda will always be around, this is a free country, you have the right to smoke and drink sodas.

ReplyDeleteWell Mayor Bloombergs his solution in New York is to ban the sale of sugary drinks of 16 ounces for healthy purposes. He was against drinking the sugary drinks because there were to many people with obesity and other sickness. Especially healthy issues. My perspective of looking at this issue between the sizes of sugary drinks and the healthy part. Well yes, people have a choice. But in real life I would say that affects your healthy system, but also hurts your family. The sugary beverages industry has invested massively to understand better how to use our very human natures against us. My idea is to drink soda let’s say just not all the time, maybe like once a month and the rest you can drink something else like juice.

ReplyDeleteI think this issue does need to be changed, I agree with the solution that we should ban oversized servings of sugary drinks. A 16 ounce soft drink is 180 calories almost all from sugar. I want to change it because of all the diabetes in the world. I think that if we do change this a lot of changes will start to happen that are good like possibly the ratio of people that are obese. I personally think we should ban any large sugary drink because i think just soda wouldn't do enough. I see most these people that are obese at fast food places like mcdonalds because they have sugary drinks for cheap.
Klio M. EDA period 4 Mrs. Carr
DeleteSugary drinks like soda are not the only cause of diabetes though, sugar doesn't directly cause diabetes. The people are obese from having a diet that has multiple unhealthy things. That person at McDonald's probably had a burger that contained high amounts of calories and fat, french fries that are high in sodium, and probably hadn't exercised all day. People should have a sense of moderation and know that a healthy meal and some exercise will keep them healthy and in the right weight range. Not all people who drink sugary drinks are unhealthy and obese. Some people might work out all the time, and eat healthy throughout the whole day, but a large Coke is their late night craving. Does that mean that that person is obese, has diabetes, and is overweight? No, the ban of large sugary drinks would be ineffective because there are still many other factors that contribute to diabetes and obesity. If we ban sugary drinks, all we are doing is limiting ourselves.
Corinn C. EDA Period 4, Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteI am against this law because people should be able to do what they want. If someone wants a big soda once in awhile they should be able to. They shouldn’t have one everyday but once in awhile is good. Like say for instance you went to the movies, you would most likely get the biggest drink because it is only a few cents more and you wouldn’t want to get a refill during the movie. Also this banned would not help the soda companies because they would only be able to sell small sodas. They will not get the profits they did when they had larger sodas. Also cinemas, fast food and restaurants would lose profit because the large drinks they sell will no longer be allowed to be sold. I think a better idea is that they should keep larger sodas but have no free refills. I think the free refills are the main problem because people think that just because its free they should take it and that its okay.
I think that having large sodas anywhere is completely unecessary because, a person does not need to ingest a 20 oz soda within an hour. That is ridiculous. having large sodas is nothing but trouble. People do not understand the consequences of having bad habits like these. It may not affect you now but it will. Obesity is a large problem in America and something needs to be done.

ReplyDeletei oppose that the government has no control over what people drink or what they eat this is a free
country and i think if people know what comes with drink and and eating unhealthy that's their choice,if we try to keep soda away from them that will make them want it even more and they will find ways to get it on there own,if they ban soda like they did to drugs its the same because they ban drugs but people still have ways of doing and getting drugs and that is what will happen if they ban soda.people can make choices for themselves, all that the government should really be worried about is making sure that all the food had food labels. people are responsible for their own health and the way they spend there money, and if they wanna deal with how much money it cost on buys soda that's their choice and not the governments.also if the government just give them a smaller portion to buy people will be buying more and more of the smaller portion to try to equal to the amount they used to be getting before.
When you said people should have it to be their choice about what they eat or drink, I think that the food should even be unhealthy to start. You said people are responsible for their own health, if they get a disease such as diabetes, they can go to the company, or government, and have a lawsuit held against them. You said "If the government just gives them a smaller amount, they will just keep getting more" Well the companies could also make it so that they have to pay even more to get a more amount, by not having the fountain drink dispenser as a free for all, they could have it behind the counter, like some companies do.

ReplyDeleteI am against the soda ban proposition because we live in a free country. People should be able to do, and drink for that matter, whatever they want. This is a freedom that shouldn't be taken away. Large drinks are simply a convenience. This proposition is perhaps too harsh for the people of New York. This will not be in favor of small businesses either. This would affect businesses such as cinemas, street vendors, sports venues, delis and restaurants. Some say that it is a misguided tactic to help stop end the obesity epidemic. Many of these people also say it is an unfair proposition that will favor places such as convenience stores because they are allowed to sell these large, sugary drinks.
Although we live in a free country, if people were able to do and drink whatever they wanted then our world would be a diaster. We have laws and banns for a reason. For safety and for our health. The businesses will do fine without soda because they could have other beverages that are better than soda. See how much we rely on soda? By allowing access to an 40 ounces soda for 89 cents at Circle K people say,"how cheap!Im really craving one." Some people just dont care if soda is bad for them and they still drink the oversized soda's. Then that person could end up obese, then that person could pass it on and on. By banning soda it would at least help decrease obesity.

I disagree with the plan. I don’t think the big gulp or any large sodas should be banned. If someone wants to drink the big 16 ounce soda then that’s their choice. People need to make a choice between healthy and unhealthy. I don’t think the government should control or tell us what to eat and what not to eat. It’s not the government’s responsibility to keeps us healthy it’s our responsibility. People are aware of what’s going on in this country with overweight and obesity problems. It’s their decision between healthy and unhealthy. If they pass a law like that then people would buy more sodas. Especially in summer time when it’s hot. They’ll just buy more packed cans or bottled sodas, and banning big cups of sodas it’s not going to do it anything. Cause there’s other foods and drinks that can lead to obesity and overweight not just soda.

DeleteI see what your saying but if we alow this to continue obesity will become worse. I am not saying that this will fix the problem but it might start decreasing the rate of obesity little by little. Also I see what you are saying about that Americans should have the right to chose what they want, but if the people are not smart enough to make the healthy choice, I think someone should make the choice for them so that they could live a longer and hapier life. Obesity is also causing many deaths in the United States because people are not smart enough or to lazy to make the right, healthy choice, that is also why someone needs to make that healthy choice for them. Also if the obesity rate goes down dramatically, maybe they can start releasing sodas back around again.
I think the soda ban was an interesting topic. But I thought it out and I don’t think the soda ban is the right thing to do. There Is much to many worst things out there before we settle this. It also didn’t say anything for a refill so you can get as much and not be breaking this so it’s basically just wasting time. Also, people are busy and they get that drink for their day at work or their day on the road. Some people need that sugar for their regular day diet, and if people get that every day then that’s their choice and not your problem. If their happy with themselves then then just leave them be.
ReplyDeleteIf you do this there are many side effects that will happen. People are going to do stupid stuff so they can get their way. Soda is going to be like drugs with people sneaking larger amounts. It’s just a stupid law itself. It’s not a big deal. It’s a drink, It’s not your business to cut people down on what they eat. So why ban it? There’s really no issue with it. It’s not soda itself, It’s the people that drink it.

DeleteIn reviewing your opinion on the soda ban, I found many faults in your argument. Although I respect your opinion, I do believe that obesity is an issue for the United States. Also, I would like to know what evidence you can provide that consuming large quantities of sugar is a healthy part of a person’s diet, and that the banning of selling large amounts of soda may create a correlation between soda and drugs. I can see that since sugar is addicting like a drug, it can be correlated to drugs. Also what kind of things would people do over a simple soft drink? I feel as if though you do not have enough information to back up your argument. Although people have the freedom to get more soda refills, it would be harder for them to even get the same amount as they normally would because they would most likely be leaving instead of staying in the restaurant or store. This soda ban in fact would help people be healthier by cutting out a small factor that causes obesity and other health problems.

ReplyDeleteThe whole issue about the soda laws should really be acted upon and I personally think that they should ban huge size proportions of it. It would be better for the peoples health. I think that they should approve the “soda laws” because many Americans are starting to become obese and out of shape. Their health just keeps getting worse and worse. Most of the food industries are doing no progress at all trying to fix this problem, but mainly it is some of the consumers fault. They know what is right and wrong to put into their bodies, and they still continue to eat or drink it. Soda contains one of the most amounts of sugar out of anything, which can later lead on to many horrible diseases. Since soda is cheap to buy so water should also be cheap not just one, and that way things could be fair for both products, but then it would be more of the consumers option of what they want. Banning soda could teach Americans a lesson for all the harm that they have done to themselves and how their bad choices can soon affect them on the long run. Honestly, I don’t like soda but once in awhile won’t hurt me. Not everyone realises how much sugar and fat etc they are putting inside themselves and just doing more damage to their bodies, and thats where the food companies have to take part in trying to improve the lives of others healthwise. If companies do want to sell their soda, then they should at least take a thought into what type of ingredients and how much they put into the product, because they too much can just be enough to cause the most amount of harm without even knowing it.
Dalila, I am confused on on your paragraph, but I do see that you disagree. Yes, they do sell large proportions of soda, but who's fault is it for buying that soda in the first place. It is a great health risk and the companies aren't doing anything but why ban it if the companies aren't even doing anything, these companies are just trying to make money because of how bad the economy is.In one point of your response you are agreeing that it is the consumers fault so thank you for that, because it is. Water is also cheap I can go to the store and buy some water that may be the same price or even cheaper than soda. Banning sodas wouldn't teach Americans anything they'd riot and have big protests to keep sodas, if they don't believe anything now that people like the government and other people that are trying to ban soda do everything they can to show them how horrible it is for you what is gonna do then when they take it away, all it is going to do is make people mad. People realize how much sugar and fat is in soda they just don't care, I bet people do read the labels because I know most people can read so I don't see why they couldn't read it, it's right there in front of there eyes as they take a drink so they know but don't care. Companies also don't care what ingredients go into there soda or how much, as long as it tastes good to consumers, doesn't kill anyone, and they make money off of it they don't care what goes in their soda. They don't have to worry about obesity because they can blame the people for buying there soda and if it's kids that get obese and there parents try and sew the company they could argue who gave them the money to buy the soda and why the parents let there kids buy it in the first place, it'd basically be the consumers fault. Good response but soda shouldn't be banned.

I agree with the "Soda Law", because it can make us healthier. In one of the articles it says "Bad drinks lead to obesity". I think that this law is great because most Americans are getting Obese because of bad drinks.
Yeah, but they get enough education so don't they won't drink all those bad stuff for them and they still don't listen so it's their fault.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the Soda Law because soda is high in sugar and calories. It could help people become healthier and maybe reduce the obesity in the nation.
Yash N. EDA Period 4 Carr
DeleteYes soda is high in sugar, sodium, calories, etc., but New York's government wants to ban large quantities of soda. If they ban jumbo size drinks, there is still the small and medium sizes which still has A LOT of bad stuff inside. If you get a 20 fl. oz. bottle of Coca-Cola (which is the size of a typical plastic water bottle), it still has 240 calories, 75 milligrams of sodium, and 65 grams of sugar!
In Conclusion: Even if you get a small coca-cola, the size of a plastic water bottle, it still has a lot of calories and sugar!
Proving that banning a large quantity of soda, will not change the obesity rate one bit!

ReplyDeleteI think that having large sodas anywhere is a big problem. Yes, people should be able to enjoy a soda at the movie theatre but having a 20 oz soda is completely unecessary. If anything buy a smaller soda and then refill it if you want to but purchasing a huge drink is a bad choice because then you might feel as if you have to finish it. Putting that much sugar in your body is so awful and people need to realize the consequences.
Jay McCoy/EDA/
ReplyDeletewell i think that people have a choice to drink whatever they want. I think that is your body and you can doe whatever you want. Soda is a big thing in the drinking in the world like party's , etc... Even critics and companies are scared because there money is going to be in a low percent like the economy.
People shouldnt be okay with drinking soda because it's there, soda is degrading there body, its tearing away there enamel. Soda is one of the reasons why a big part of America is over weight. yes, its your choice to choose whats going in your body, but it doesnt mean that you should be putting something as bad as soda in, juice is just as good.

ReplyDeleteI think that banning soda is a great step towards a better place. The over size of sugary drinks encourage the consumer to, consume the product even though it is bad for you. Yes, banning sodas, being anything from a 16 oz. or larger should be banned because no one needs to have that much sugar in you just for a drink. And as stated in one of the articles it can lead to obesity, though thins type can be reduced or stopped.
ReplyDeleteTyler M Period 4 EDA Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I don't think that the ban will really do all that much. Just banning large drinks isn't going to stop anyone from drinking the same amounts of soda. Think of it this way- if you get a "big gulp" that's the same size as two regular sodas, and the big gulp gets banned, what would that fix? If you just get two regular sized sodas you will still get the same amount, so when it comes down to it, this soda ban can't really do anything that there isn't an easy work around for. An initiative to make people want to choose something instead of soda would be a much better idea.

ReplyDeleteMayor Bloomberg’s law was denied by a judge the last day before the law would have taken action. The sugary drink ban would have effected all of the coffee shops, soda corp. , and all concession stands selling beverages that are sugary over 16 ounces. I agree with the judge because there are too many loopholes and confusion what drinks and what places are banned. Also it is an infringement on our rights as Americans. I am glad the judge saw that there were flaws in Bloomberg’s plan to ban large sodas and other similar drinks. The soda corp. would be worse off if restaurants would stop buying as much soda as they used to. Bloomberg is upset that it didn’t pass but he will keep going but I hope when he does that he will remember our rights as Americans and only act in a limited parameter because if he doesn’t lots of people will be angry. People on their way to work would have to put whatever they want in their coffee and that could make them late to work if they have to go in and make the coffee themselves. So not as many people would go get coffee and most of them would use a coffee maker in their own houses. It would do serious damage to several major companies and would probably mean the loss of a bunch of workers for major soda company.
