ReplyDeleteI was very surprised by some of the statistics in the movie, The Weight of the Nation, like how ⅓ of all children born in the year 2000 will have diabetes in their lifetime. As far as the debate going on in Washington about limiting the advertising sugary, processed food to children, I definitely think that type of marketing should be reduced if not stopped because it greatly affects the child’s food preferences, in this case unhealthy food. The companies profiting from marketing to children could instead switch to marketing healthier alternatives in a way that makes the healthy food look appealing to young children, so there would be no change in their profits. Doing so might also be even better for the companies because parents would be happier with them for influencing their kids to eat healthier. In addition, the amount of TV the average child watches everyday is a big problem, like the girl in the movie with the TV in her room. We see that it reduces the amount of exercise they do and makes them crave unhealthy foods being advertised. It is shown that the more TV a child watches, the more likely they are to consume the unhealthy foods being advertised, and the majority of foods being advertised are of poor nutritional value. Furthermore, I agree with the movie when they say that school cafeteria food must change because the school food system is set up for effeciency, not the nutritional value of the food.

Children In Crisis
The obesity problem in America has always been a big debate in politicians. Obesity is an epidemic that keeps increasing every year and it contributes to more than 40% of deaths in the United States. Schools are now changing the rules about having physical education or not, which seems ridiculous to me. Not having any type of exercise at a school would keep increasing the numbers of obesity, it wouldn't help change it just increase it. Everyone is always complaining about how our kids of America have been more and more unhealthy within these past years. Many of the schools should try helping to stop this epidemic and provide physical education and that its mandatory. If kids don't have the chance to exercise out of school, then why can't the school take one little step in trying to provide them a way of having exercised within the day during school. Teachers want their students to pay attention better in class, parents don’t want their children to become obese, and due to the way schools are starting to run now does affect the way the children live and how they feel about themselves. Keeping a simple rule where p.e must be required is just one step further into changing the way Americas children’s health improves. These small steps that can help make everything better and change the future of our kids does make a difference, it does make their health better and most importantly the kids won’t feel so insecure about themselves. Yes, kids do get bullied and teased about their weight, but how can they help it if not even their own schools will provide some type of exercise for them. Participating in these problems to make them better will change our epidemic of obesity, it will help change the weight of the nation.

18% of children in this generation are obese. Part of the problem is the lunches that the schools provide for the kids. The amount of calories in the lunches provided in schools fill 40-50% of the kids’ daily calorie intake. The schools provide the bagged chips, or processed foods at cheaper price, such as in the vending machines. Chips provided in the lunch line, usually win the kids’ choice over the healthy fruits or vegetables. Another problem that causes obesity is physical education. Five of the U.S. states require physical education, which is a step in the right direction towards defeating obesity. Now we just need to have the rest of the states require that the students must take a physical education class. Texas has been rumored to be the “fattest state”. Texas does not require physical activity, and the state can get this title removed by requiring children to physical education. There are many activities kids take part in outside of school that lead to causing obesity. Some of these consist of watching television, playing video games, and simply just not getting physical activity. When kids watch television, what exactly are they watching? A majority of their face time with the television screen is made up of commercials. Those commercials are mostly of sugar packed foods. We should work to remove those commercials from what this generations kids are watching. The time kids have playing video games makes a large impact into the cause of obesity.

ReplyDeleteI think that there needs to be change in school lunches nationwide. The school lunches currently being served at most schools around the country are not healthy at all. I think that if a parent sends their child to a school that serves lunches they should be able to know that the food their children are eating is healthy. Feeding our kids food with such high levels of fat will make them more likely to eat those same types of foods later in life. That’s not all schools need to improve to help solve the weight epidemic in our country. Only small percentages of schools across the country demand Physical Education, which in my opinion is a huge problem. Eating healthy doesn’t do much if exercise isn’t involved as well. Educators probably don’t understand the true value of PE, and how it can promote a lifetime of healthy choices and can teach the kids ways to stay in good physical shape for their whole lives. It isn’t just the schools that need to help the kids, the kids need to help themselves, and parents can play a role as well. Physical activity and healthy eating outside of school are just as important as those things in school. This especially true during the summer, when it entirely falls in to the hands of the kids and parents. In my opinion, it is the job of the schools, the parents, and the children to make sure the children are eating healthy, and changes need to be made.

ReplyDeleteIn the past twenty years, obesity rates have spiked to a number Americans have never seen before. Some people are trying to change the industry and the way consumers respond to the industry, but certain challenges keep getting in the way. Nowadays, it is harder to eat healthy than it is to eat unhealthy. Unhealthy products are more abundant and cheaper than healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. Healthy foods aren’t available to people with low income. It’s much easier to buy chips and a soda for their kids for breakfast because it is cheaper and will help them financially wise. Because less and less people are buying fruits and vegetables, the farmers aren't being rewarded for growing an assortment of different foods because people are only buying things that are made of corn. They artificial food companies are running the farmers out of business. The reason vegetables and fruits are expensive is because nobody is buying them and the farmers need to gain profit. We need to find a way to get people to start eat vegetables and fruits because these unhealthy foods that people are consuming are taking a huge toll on people’s health. The obesity rates have been rising for quite some time now, people need to realize that this is our future. We need to make drastic changes in society to save ourselves. People need to start cooking their own meals more often, and exercise regularly. The phrase “you are what you eat” needs to be ingrained into people's minds again.

The documentary Children in Crisis talks about the obese children in America and how they are affected by the various junk foods, TV, and non-activity every day. These kids suffer from their heavy weight and most of it comes from the unhealthy food they eat. The unhealthy food they eat is a big impact on their life, foods like McDonalds, Burger King, Lucky Charms, candy, fries, and much much more. Unhealthy, junk food like that affects them in every way bringing their blood pressure up, giving them a shorter life expectancy, and giving them more of a chance of health problems. A big health problem that would eventually affect them in the future is Diabetes. Another big reason why these kids have obesity is because they don’t do any physically activity at all during every day. Having no exercise everyday plus the food they eat is why these kids are obese. When you don’t do anything at all day or have no exercise all day the food you eat just stays and turns into fat and you don’t burn any fat. All the commercials on the T.V also show these kids all these fattening, sugary, salty, fast food and they have celebrities and famous cartoon characters show that these foods are good and healthy but they’re really not. These kids need to change their habits and start exercising and eating healthier food to keep their weight in control and not obese.

ReplyDeleteChildren in Crisis Reflection
Childhood obesity was the main concern in the Children in Crisis chapter of Weight of the Nation. I think activities outside school are contributing to obesity. Since the last decade, obesity in children has tripled. For every three children born in the world, one is predicted to have diabetes some time in their life! All this is happening because most of the children are at home playing video games for up to five hours, or on facebook, instagram, tumblr, and YouTube for the entire day and eating the wrong food!
The most sugary cereals are always bought so much because they get so much advertisements everywhere! Cartoons attract children watching TV all the time, but all the food advertisements are all JUNK FOOD. PBS is probably the only channel that actually advertises healthy food for kids to be strong. That's because PBS is a government channel and the government cares for everyone and wants everyone to be happy and healthy, so they organize events and actually do things. The government has already planed many mile walks for the entire city, so they can change their habits. Only government shouldn't be trying to change the obesity problem, so people need to change considering that the obesity rate has tripled!
In conclusion, the government and people need to help change other people's thought on junk food and healthy food and to get physical activity.

Children in Crisis Revolution
After watching the documentary, Children in Crisis, I was appalled at rates of children in today’s society who are overweight or obese. Did you know that 18% of our children today are obese? Not even overweight but obese! And it’s predicted that ⅔ of Americans will be obese by 2018. That’s only a few years from now. This problem doesn’t only hurt our health but our pockets too. $50 Billion dollars are spent each year on health bills from obesity.
How crazy is that! Physical activity in the US has plummeted too with all the new technologies. Everything we have developed in the past few years is labor-saving, and that contributes to the less than 5% of adults who meet the minimum guide for physical activity. So where are all these adults feet taking them? To the cheap, overproduced fast food restaurants around every corner. In fact, the average American eats 5X more food than they were in the 1980’s. The leading causes of death today all relate to obesity; heart disease, cancer, kidney disease, diabetes, and of course obesity are the main chronic disease killers. While in the 1900s, the leading causes of death were flu complications, pneumonia, and TB.
Where is the physical activity? It’s proven that physical activity improves learning so it would only be obvious that it’s provided in schools. in fact only 4% of Elementary schools, 2% of middle, and 8% of High schools provide a PE class for kids. For these reasons, I believe that this video was a good representation of this crisis going on today. We need to make a change, and hopefully this documentary can show people what’s really going on, and hopefully, we can pass a law or bill that will help the well-being of our, and our children’s future.

ReplyDeleteWell the school lunches there are not healthy choices like you may see a salad but it in this case that salad may not be healthy because the salad probably is not washed, probably it has washed with not clean water. The sides are basically chips or cookies that are bad you should at least have a fruit side dish or something that can be at least some good to your health. Michelle Obama is telling the people to sell fruit as a side dish because now in days in high schools is just too much obesity and sicknesses because of their food that are there eating I s just not a healthy foods you may think that is healthy the salad or maybes a v8 but what you really don’t know is what there really contain or how there produced. So now is a law that the schools have to have a healthy choice as a side of their lunch in the cafeteria. This was taken in 2010. Now is about 99% public school with junk food. The kids are producing the market to grow and grow not just that more obesity and high cholesterol in young age. The schools are giving pre-parks lunches and the food is not fresh is frozen is not even controlled by the principle of what nutrition’s that there kids are eating. Is really bad for the kids health and it look bad for the school to much obesity and even worse they put P.E as and for the kids that are overweight.

In the video Weight of the Nation, they stated that since our food system is bad, that 1/3 of children born after year 2000 will have diabetes. Parents are raising their kids on a happy meal diet with large fries. Companies have hot-wired our brains to love their food and keep spending money at their restaurants. Back then, it was uncommon for a kid to have type 2 diabetes, now it’s not a surprise to us. Parents think that school lunches are healthy. A survey says that 80 something percent on parents agree that they think that school lunches are healthy for their kids. Parents don’t realize that some kids get a bag of chips and Powerade for their lunch. States are not required to have P.E as a class for students to take. If schools have P.E., it’s in their own rules/regulations. This could be one of the causes of kids not exercising. More and more video games are being played then kids exercising and playing sports or games outside if the house. When a child has type two diabetes, their risk of getting heart disease increases dramatically. Parents have tried to reduce their children from becoming obese by removing T.V from their child, having them drink fewer sodas at home, and reduce portions for dinner. 2/3 children that are born are going to be obese. Reducing kids from watching public T.V. with all of the soda ads. Most kids today have T.V’s in their room which exposes them to more of the ads.

Should electronics be the reason for kids to become overweight and inquire deadly diseases as a result? There are many major challenges that contribute to obesity. I found that one of the main ones are the amount of screen time children have every day. It has been shown that on average kids have about and a half hour of screen time per day. The kids are the key players to this challenge. The kids should not be allowed to sit in front of a screen and just watch it, or play the console that is connected to it. The children’s parents should have more control over how much screen time their kids are able to have. The schools that the kids attend should not have the kids sit in front of a computer screen to do their school work, what happened to a pencil and paper? I think that schools should limit the school work that is done on the computers. A way to limit this problem to being a leading cause to obesity is if the parents try to limit the kids’ freedom to time with a screen. Instead of the school having the kids spend time in front of a computer screen, or a television screen, they should give the kids a bit of time to go outside and exercise, or play games. By adding more time for the kids to be in front of a screen is a possible step in a very wrong direction.

The way America lives today has changed rapidly throughout the years due to the way we eat. Food companies have put no effort in trying to change their ingredients and on how they make their food. Many people are becoming obese, getting diabetes, and becoming overweight due to the fact that the food they’re consuming is very unhealthy. Health costs are rising due to the many serious health problems that people are facing with this obesity epidemic. If people, the community, and basically everyone do want to change their ways of diet, everyone has to take to part, and speak out, have their voice heard on what they want. The people of America have the problem of choosing where they live, due to the fact on what they’re limited on. Many communities don’t provide a playground for children to help exercise themselves to maintain themselves fit. Sometimes or most of the time fresh fruit isn’t offered to the people in the certain area region in which they live in, which can be another factor to the obesity epidemic. Changing and improving the way things are will help change the way people live today. Obesity keeps getting worse and worse but if we decide to finally change it, then it will happen, i promise you that.

I think that physical education in our schools is a problem, because it is not a requirement of everyone and I don’t think that’s right for many reasons first, we should teach the kids of the future to exercise every day, if they start at a young age and keep during P.E in school all throughout their years they will always be active and have healthier weights and it will be easy to maintain for them when they get older because they are used to having physical education and not just sitting around. It has been proven that children who watch TV and are not active are more likely to become overweight. In the video it stated that only 1 out of 6 schools require P.E 3 days a week, which means other kids are not being active and they are gaining more weight and becoming obese. Children who are obese have bigger chances of getting other diseases and health problems when they get older. Everybody can change the way they live, obesity has reached the level of crisis. If children don't learn how to become active now at a young age they will grow up not caring because they never learned how important it actually is to eat healthy and be active, and the schools need to teach their children about it now before it’s too late because we can change the future now then having to try extra hard and repair are children later. It needs to be about the children heath and not about their physical appearances. Everyone should look for help if they need it and parents should help their kids because only 10% of parents are actually trying to find help for their children.

Should kids be allowed to have TV’s in there room? I don’t think so, because kids will sit in there room and eat and eat and eat until they don’t want to eat anymore. Many kids think it’s the “in thing” to have a TV in there room, because only cool people have them. Kids should understand that having TV’s will cause a distraction and they wouldn’t be as focused on most important things in their life, such as school, friends and much much more. The way this generation is headed, TV’s and high technology are the only things in our future. Spending 7.5 hours a day staring at a television screen instead of going out and being active isn’t good for our bodies. With the way we are running our bodies need to be active, walking to and home from school is always a good way to get exercise. Restaurants feed you more than an average serving size, so if you could tell yourself to only eat half then you would save yourself a lot of unhealthiness going into your body. No foods at corner stores are as cheap as a bag of chips or a soda. Artificial flavoring is something cheap and easy to use. The artificial flavoring isn’t what we should always be putting into our bodies; putting natural flavors are a lot better. Kids are more attracted to candy and chips and less attracted to fruits and vegetables, which is what’s better for them.

ReplyDeleteOutside of school kids watch TV, play video games, and most of the time choose not to go outside. Kids need physical exercise to. Outside of school they should do sports or play games with friends that involve moving more of your body than your hands. There should be more time to exercise in and out of school to keep kids healthy and make them stronger. I think kids these days are getting lazier because they would rather watch TV then go outside and play with friends. If People went out and exercised for two hours a day then they would be healthier and be happier for it while living longer lives. Why should people suffer for the bad decisions that were made when they were kids like eating out every day and watching TV when they could be playing with their dad or their mom. People want to eat out because where they live. People may want to live like this and just sit around but how does it affect the people around us. The mom of a kid with weight trouble would be sad she did nothing to help him or her with their weight like going out and playing with them. Or getting them involved in sports or some physical activity that would keep them moving like all kids should be doing in their free time. They should play little games of baseball with their friends.

ReplyDeleteChildren are in crisis, today children are becoming more obese. Things need to change, better habits need to be formed among many families in our nation. 18% of children in America are
obese. This needs to be changed as soon as possible, America is built off of cheap food. Advertising of unhealthy food is happening too often. This generation, even with new medicines and knowledge, has a shorter life expectancy than previous generations because of this obesity problem. Obesity can cause other problems later in life like, heart disease, diabetes, ect. People do not understand the consequences until it affects them, families need to help themselves before reality hits them and something tragic happens. Only 10% of parents seek help for their obese child. Children should not be in this alone, they deserve help. All obese or overweight children should try to seek help from people or organizations such as the One Step Ahead program.
Schools should be more involved in helping children develop healthy habits. Since children spend most of their time at school, schools should have healthy food choices and require physical education courses to be taken. Only ⅙ schools in the unites states require physical education at least five times a week. This is ridiculous, kids spend too much time at school for there not to be physical activities.
Healthy food choices are another big thing in helping america's problem. A whopping 94% of school lunch programs failed to meet the USD standards. The food that school’s are feeding children is absurd.

ReplyDeleteThe society that kids are growing up in now days makes it extremely hard for them to live healthy. Now days, 18% of children in America are obese. America has a reputation of fat burgers and cheap food, which causes us to be the country with the highest obesity rate. Our generations of children are in a crisis; their futures are at risk of an obese population. Our generation has a shorter life expectancy than those of our parents. Over the last 30 years, obesity rates in children have tripled. If we continue to raise our children with these bad habits, we are setting them up for failure. We need to change our eating habits, and teach our kids the proper ways to eat. Instead of teaching it, we need to enforce it. The problem is in the way children are being raised, parents aren’t paying enough attention to what is going in to their child’s diet. We have to educate the parents also, because the parents are the ones feeding the kids these things. If a child is obese, chances are that the parent is overweight also. Our society has been advanced to things that do everything for us. Instead of using technology as an excuse to be lazy, we need to take it as motivation to stay on the right track of being active and healthy. This problem is up to us as human beings to fix, it’s not that hard. People need to be responsible and have the want to be healthy.

The movie, Weight of the Nation , brings up many important crisis, that involve children, its main point being about obesity. As the years have gone by obesity has tripled in just one generation. and there are many factors to this dilemma, one of them being that children that go to restaurants tend to eat double the amount of calories they need in one sitting. Yet one of the major contributing factors to the child obesity crisis is the school lunch program. This program is in 99% of the schools nationwide, yet this program is not the healthiest foods a child should be eating since 94% of the schools failed the USDA requirements. This happens because there isn’t a sufficient amount of funding for the specific program, the majority of the students eat breakfast and lunch. Fortunately, congress passed the Health, Hunger Free Kids Act in 2010, this made schools serve healthier items and healthier choices. They made luch schools contain 50% of their grain whole wheat, and the lunches must have 53% less sodium than before. This was the best thing the government did to get on track for a healthy generation. Yet after a year of this being in process, congress in 2011 of November changed the Health, Hunger Free Kids Act to where tomato paste is considered a vegetable, and french fries are allowed because they are made with potatoes. Yet everyone knows that neither one of these items are considered healthy because what they are made with.

As a human, it is in the nature of our species to eat whatever is in front of us. However, this instinct, along with the food industries target idea of surplus, is contributing to the obesity in our country. Everything these days when it comes to food is more. There’s more food everywhere in America. There’s more food in the supermarkets and more food at restaurants. Now, more food can’t be a bad thing right? That’s true, but human nature tells us to eat as much as is available, and that worked hundreds of years ago, since no civilization has ever had food been as easy today for the common man as it is today. I don’t think there’s any way that the government or anyone else can change this, nor do I think that they should. This is going to be something people have to change for themselves. The big companies can create extremely large amounts of food and distribute it at once, and restaurants also can serve more food than ever. It’s definitely not a bad thing that so much food can be produced for the entire world, it’s just a matter of what humans do. The only way to fix this would be for people to understand how much they should eat, instead of eating whatever is right in front of them like we have been for thousands of years. This is not an issue that would be easy to change, it’s just a matter of how quick can our species get used to the new system of food.
Sachi T. Period 4 Mrs. Carr
ReplyDeleteChallenges: One major challenge when battling obesity is that the genetic hardwiring of our brains is geared toward salt, sugar, and fat. This challenge affects the average consumer being drawn in by junk food, the fast food companies selling the fast food they know the consumer will crave, and the government who is subsidizing the ingredients that make fast food so cheap. A possible solution to this problem is to just stop eating fast food, to go cold turkey like with smoking. Once the unhealthy food is completely out of your system, you no longer crave it. The healthy foods would cleanse your entire body and make you feel stronger and less tired, a difference you wouldn’t feel if you were still eating fast food.
Another challenge to consider is that restaurant serving sizes are way too big. They are serving much more than the average person needs in one sitting, dramatically increasing the amount of calories the person consumes in one day. For example, the size of sodas has increased a lot in the last decade. This affects the consumer, the restaurants who decide to serve huge portion sizes, and the government, who dictates what is considered a “healthy” portion size. A solution to this problem would be to stop subsidizing unhealthy foods so that they would become more expensive for the restaurants to buy, there forcing them to raise their prices. With the prices raised, more people would buy the smaller portion sizes to save themselves the money.

Who is affected most by food advertising on television? The children, one of the biggest mistakes of parents is letting their children watch TV for countless hours, constantly on television ads and shows taint the mind of the viewer with advertisements of unhealthy food and “cool” people eating at a fast food restaurant or a famous athlete promoting a sugary sports drink. It’s a trap essentially, the advertisements are marketed towards kids and the kids are very susceptible to this. Also, in poorer area there are no parks or proper areas for children to get exercise. Kids are getting sicker due to this obesity epidemic and the media is not helping in anyway, and is perhaps doing more damage to these kids who grow up on thinking “Lucky Charms” a cereal pack full with sugar is health for them, this new generation is being born in to a world where being sick and overweight is acceptable and where the food that is the cheapest and easy to access is also the most unhealthy. The rate of diabetes in children is extremely high, before 2000 seeing type two diabetes was almost null. Parents need to get a clue and help their kids understand the dangers of our food today. Without proper areas to play, and lose the terribleness they are consuming, children are on a slope in to complete ignorance and sickness. If a law if passed that would ban the advertisements of unhealthy food on children's television networks and a park was provided in areas with a large population of kids it may be the first step in to helping these children in crisis.

In the children in crisis video the school lunches really blew me away. Here at foothill we don’t get what they get every day. They get french-fries, pizza and tons of other stuff. It’s more like a food court then a cafeteria. This makes us kids make bad choices. When there are tons of choices of foods let alone unhealthy food we choose the worst one for us. It’s not our fault, if there’s good food we don’t even think about it we just take it and eat it. This is the schools fault for buying this phone and serving it. I’m sure they don’t even know how bad it is for you either. But they can easily switch to other food when they see it in a video being watched by tons of kids across the globe. Like seriously if it’s in this video it’s a big problem. This is one main problem why kids are obeast. Some of them it’s not their fault. They don’t have a choice what to eat at school. Maybe they can pack a lunch but some kids don’t have time to do that every morning. Its sometimes not the schools fault either. Some people don’t look at the nutrition facts or what’s in it. It’s the people that make the food and what they put in it. Its actually gross how they know what they put in their food but not know what theyr doing to me and other kids.

1 out of 6 schools require P.E. nationwide. This is unbelievable, how can so many schools in the country not require P.E. P.E is really important especially for teenagers. In the crisis that we are right now fighting against obesity most schools should require some type of physical education. Some schools already do so that’s great! It is estimated that about less than 20% of kids walk to school or ride a bicycle skateboard etc. The nation should follow California’s law that requires all schools to have at least two years of physical education. That is a good thing so we can keep kids active. It’s not only the governments or state responsibility but also the parents. Instead of chips they can get carrots or an apple or instead of soda then can make carrot and orange juice. It’s the parent’s actions and responsibility to keep their children healthy about 10% of parents seek help for their kids only 10% we need to improve that. Many schools across the country are changing food lunch to that’s a good step their taking instead of hamburgers pizza fries etc. their serving delicious vegetables and fruits. I think instead of juice they should serve more water and healthy drinks to not only orange or apple juice but fresh mango, pineapple, watermelon juices that kids can drink to. But there’s a problem to many kids are not eating at school because of the food they think its nasty and they don’t like it so they throw it away and they don’t eat that is a problem the state or district in general has to come up with a plan so that kids can eat their food and not throw it away and be hungry all day. We still have a long way to go but the important thing is to get enough exercise and a good healthy eating.

In my opinion the school lunches aren't very healthy for kids that eat at school. There are kids that bring their own lunches because their parents know that the school lunches aren't healthy or the child doesn't want lunch from school. These parents have time to make lunches for their child or children, because some moms or dads don’t go to work. I think one parent should stay at home, and one go to work. I personally bring my lunch from home, and I am happy about it. I had to eat lunch at school once, the lunch I chose wasn't good, because all the lunches that the students chose were the good lunches, and left the bad ones. I think the government should do something about this, because the school lunches aren't healthy, and should have more vegetables and fruits. Some kids get the vegetables and fruits to have a full lunch, but once they get out of the cafeteria, they throw the vegetables or fruits in the trash. Some parents can’t give their child or children lunches because they are busy getting ready for work in the morning, and don’t have the time to make a lunch for their child or children. This causes kids not to be healthy, and not be able to think in class. School is important to a child’s education. What are they going to do if they didn't finish school? Are they going to work at McDonald’s? How are these children going to take care of a family?

In the “Children in Crisis” video, they addressed the issue of the activities that children do (or don’t do) outside of school that contribute to childhood obesity. The lack of physical activity and the more stagnant lifestyle of children today contribute to obesity for several reasons. A few of these issues are at the fault of parents who do not really know that they are helping in causing their child to become obese.
The most prominent cause of obesity is the numerous hours of screen time that a child may get per day. For many children this is a mode of communication for them to contact their friends. Screen time may also be simply for entertainment. However, under these circumstances, a child may not have the ability or willpower to get the required amount of physical activity each day.
Another factor that can contribute to childhood obesity is that some parents do not want to let their children outside for fear of something bad happening to their child. Although this action is completely justified, it can still affect a child’s health. Instead of going outside for physical activity, the child stays indoors and could possibly get more screen time.
A parent may also not have enough time to take their child to the park or just outside to play, so in turn, the child is affected as well. However, with older children this may not be the case. A teenager may be too lazy or busy to get any exercise whatsoever. It is up to the kids and the parents to help children get more physical activity and stop the spread of childhood obesity.

Obesity in America is growing rapidly, because of how much fast food we have and also how much all of us exercise. Obese people in America have to face curtain challenges; one challenge they have to face is where the people live. This is a big challenge that obese people have to face not only obese but also other people. Where you live can affect you because you could live in a more of a less income neighborhood and buying food is just too expensive for your family so you have to go eat at a fast food place because its only one dollar for a burger. Your area could have less parks to go and run around and exercise, so you think to yourself better just stay inside, doing this also cause your children to be obese because of how inactive your letting them be. Instead of a park you may have to go to a parking lot, just to exercise or even for your kids to play.
When being obese or overweight another main problem that you have to face is how overpriced healthy foods are, causing you to say, “ Why would I go to the store and buy one healthy thing for four dollars when I can get 4 things at McDonald's for that price and I can feed everyone.” Or you’re at the grocery store and there’s something there that is way cheaper than something that is healthy so you have to buy that instead.

One challenge in this film is that kids don’t know what a vegetable is. They go to go a store and buy lots of junk food without knowing what a vegetable is what makes me think they kids aren’t healthy at all. If these kids were healthy, they would know what a vegetable is. We need these kids to eat less junk food and more vegetables, which we can do something about it. The parents need to enforce the rules in the house, for kids to eat more vegetables. When dinner is served, the parents should serve vegetables and no deserts at all. If they start crying or whining, well tell them they aren’t allowed to play video games for a week or more which will them eat their vegetables to able to play. The second challenge in this film is that less than three percent of the land is planted with fruits and vegetables. This is very important to know that the healthy food companies don’t have enough money to plant their healthy foods on the lands. The unhealthy food companies have lots of money to plant their junk food. Therefore has the healthy food companies have three percent of the land planted with healthy food which will benefit everyone in life. That’s why we see lots of junk food in the stores, with barely any healthy foods (not grocery stores) which has kids want to buy junk food because it has their favorite character on television, lots of color, etc.

ReplyDeleteWell the obesity challenges for the kids. Now in days they have too much junk food sellers and there basically everywhere, but where there most on always is on the T V marketing. Their idea is to make the a commercials that attract the people some of them are trying and being successful to attract the kid, like: lucky charms, Reese’s pops, McDonald’s, and a lot more there’s too much unhealthy food now in days that some of the kids in school have obesity problems . Now the challenges for the kids and the adults there big challenge is doing exercise. One of these challenges that is hard is to stop eating junk food. There excuse is that is cheaper and you can get it every time you want is fast but that I would say is not the right thing to think that way you better look at yourself and say that because obesity is not a thing like the flu it comes and it goes away when your obese is hard why? Because there too many marketing that gives unhealthy stuff and put the unhealthy stuff and makes it as like a good healthy national like the cereals for example cinnamon toast crunch it has a fiber not really it has high on sugar and high on sodium and fat and the beef , the chicken and the pork now it has hormones they feed them stuff to grow bigger and have more meet why because there market is bigger you see a farm and a cow on the tag that is a lie it has hormones and now is not a farm is a factory.

While watching Challenges, I saw that most kids are going to the corner store before school or after school buying chips and a soda. In the video, WoN interviewed a clerk at the store and he said he was eating a head of broccoli and a kid asked him what is was. To me, when a kid doesn’t know his vegetables, that’s a serious problem. WoN also asked the clerk if there was anything healthy in the store and he just shook his head and said no. Parents aren’t the only bad guys but they’re not caring that a bag of chips and a soda good lead their child to obesity. Most people eat of poorly due to the economy and the low priced food/snacks. The ads also compensate to why people eat poorly and make unhealthy choices. Some neighborhoods don’t have parks or safe places for kids to get exercise and burn off all the calories they gain on their diet. In the video it showed that a mom takes her son to a parking lot to play in when all the cars are gone.
Since it’s easier for parents to go to McDonalds and get a Big Mac and fries then to buy a stalk of celery. Americans consume bigger proportions then an average person should. The lower class can’t afford all of these expensive vegetables and the supermarket. Yet, they think they’re getting a good meal but all of those fatty ingredients and added unnatural sugar.

ReplyDeleteI believe that the lunches should have healthy foods required when they buy something. So the more unhealthy food they buy they have to get the same amount of the healthy food in there meal. And they should sell a lot of unhealthy foods, they should only limit unhealthy foods to a once a month. There should be physical education in schools because some kids don’t do any physical exercise and they need it and if they don’t get any physical exercise they might develop a disease like diabetes or a heart disease. Some kids stay inside on weekends and just play video games and eat unhealthy foods and it is causing diabetes and obesity so physical exercise in schools is necessary to stop child obesity and prevent heart disease and diabetes. The cities should build much more parks for kids so they can play instead of staying outside and playing video games and eating healthy, but some kids can not play because there are no parks around, so the cities need to build more parks and the parents and the kids need to take the iniative and go play outside and lose weight. There are also, now, a lot of programs that are setup by the city and major corporations to let not only kids but adults to get outside and be active and lose weight. One program is “The Play 60” program by the NFL. This program encourages kids to play at least for sixty minutes every day. This program is very good for reducing children obesity.
To fix the obesity epidemic in The United States, we need to do some exercise and the companies need to give more attention to checking to see if the food is safe or not. We also need to make healthy foods more inexpensive so that all people can afford it. The major companies are too powerful and they can shut down all the smaller companies that sell healthy foods or take their money which makes healthy foods a lot more expensive. The city’s should also give more attention to the obesity epidemic and start making exercise programs for the city so people can get out and active and lose some weight. I think, to solve the obesity epidemic, we need to exercise a lot more and really cut down on fat foods and making healthy foods less expensive for everyone. If we can do that I think we can make the rates of obesity go down for not just adults but for children and anybody else who wants to lose weight. But people have to want to lose weight and try their best to do so; otherwise they are not going to get the results that they are looking for. If people do not choose to make the healthier choice and exercise, I believe that it is their decision to choose as they want but they will not live a happier life or a longer life so I do not see why anybody would not want to take a step forward and make the right healthy choice.

The “Challenges” chapter of Weight of the Nation was mainly about the rise of obesity rate around the world! The main players were food companies and selling junk food. The participants were children and adults. Children because some children weren’t able to recognize a veggie and adults because seventy five percent of adults drive to work and ¼ adults get no physical activity every day! The only contributor solving the problem was the government because they organized mile walk events for the overweight/normal people and successfully planned to build more sidewalks and biking areas to get more people active! Also they are trying to eliminate large size drinks, so people don’t drink to much.
The government is already trying to solve the problem of obesity, but if they’re the only ones solving the issue, the issue will never be solved! People need to change their eating habits. They eat too much because they want food. If someone is hungry, they shouldn’t overfill their body with fat and get no exercise! Also, not that many people are getting exercise. People need to change their work out habits by getting up from the couch and not being lazy.
In conclusion, people need to change their exercising and eating habits, while the government is already is helping us not get obese or overweight.

Activities outside of school that are contributing to obesity in children are food advertising because of fast food restaurants and junk food that are showing in the television. Having a television in a room is part of obesity because the kids are not doing physical activity of any kind and also they are watching food advertising that they want really badly and that is a problem right now. The more children watch food advertising, the most likely they want it because they are always watching the commercial every time. On some parts of the United States, they do not have parks because they are really poor and the part that do not have a park, children are obese and that is a big issue. In Santa Ana, children went to a parking lot as a park and that is sad because mostly all the kids were obese who want to do physical activity outside of school but they can’t because they do not have a park to play and have fun. Instead of going to a park or a children center, they go to the parking lots around them because they want to have fun and try to their best to lose weight. Now, children do not walk to school because they prefer to get a ride from their parents or friends and when they walk, they could lose weight by just walking ten through fifteen minutes a day. But, instead they are too lazy to walk and they get a ride. Also, children buy unhealthy food at the market or liquor for a dollar and the food they buy for a dollar is unhealthy and contains a lot of sugar and fat. Kids buy those things for a dollar because it is sweet and cheap and also, they buy that stuff every day and that is a problem because that can lead to a disease or obesity. Children use more media than 7.5 hours a day and that is a big problem because they do not do physical activity and all their doing is laying on the couch and being lazy. Children do not go outside and play sports anymore because now, we have technology like an X-box 360, PS3, IPod, IPad, and etc. Children prefer to stay inside and play their games in technology. Children do not drink healthy beverages because they want soda and juices. Some juices have the same amount of calories as a soda does and children always drink juices all the time. Also, children drink energy drinks which is bad because some energy drinks can cause drink because on what they put on it and is not healthy. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously were not seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated bold cholesterol levels. Obese children are more prone to low self-esteem, negative body image ad depression because of their weight.

Obesity is the biggest threat in the United States because a big percentage of the United States people are obese. One hundred and fifty billion dollars was spent for health consequences and that is a big problem because probably later on, more and more money will be spent on health consequences. Another thing, health care is very expensive and some people cannot afford it, so the government pays for it and if he does not pay for them people will live unhealthy and probably have a disease or probably even die. Moderate society is rising because of the people who are obese. People do not walk to place anymore or ride their bike because people prefer to ride their car and be their faster. In a restaurant, you get double the calories then eating at home and people go to fast food restaurant because it is cheap and fast. In the last thirty years, our DNA has not changed, but our environment has. More and more people will come to the United States and those people will probably be obese and our percentage of people being obese will go up. It sometimes really hard to get new park on poor area of the United States because they do not have the money and mostly all children on poor area are obese or almost obese. Television is part of people being obese because there is a lot of food advertising and children are watching it and are going to want it. Markets and liquors are also a big part of obesity because when children walk to school, they also buy things for a dollar and those snacks or beverages for a dollar are high in sugar and fat. Children always buy those things because they are cheap and have a lot of sugar. Fifty percent of farmland is cover with corn and soybean and that could lead to obesity for a lot of people. Obesity is the leading cause of death for five out of ten people in the United States and one in four adults don not get physical activity. All of this should stop now because this could lead to a whole other level that people would not want to be in.

ReplyDeleteOver one third of this country is overweight and we need to change this now. People need to get out and exercise more and have fun losing all their weight. There has to be one activity that is fun and you get exercise by doing. For example I like to ride my bike so I ride it to school most days. People should also eat just one or maybe two portions of food each meal and don’t eat the really high calorie count like chocolate brownie with chocolate chips and fudge except every once and a while. People also need to keep their kids from eating too many fat foods and eat some fruits and veggies. Also people need to keep their kids from growing too lazy or else they won’t want to do almost anything in their lives. Kids do not know as well as their parents so it is up to the parents to decide what is best for their kids. Like not eating out for a few nights a week and enjoy a nice home cooked meal. It most the time would be better for you then if you were eating out. The kids are surrounded by toxic environments of TV commercials and billboards of fast food restaurants and fast food restaurants everywhere now a days. In a shopping mall there are about ten restaurants and only a few of them if any are healthy for anyone.

There are a lot of the reasons why children and teens may be obese these can be traced to their activities outside of and during School. For example the commercials that children and teens watch will make them crave that product and the more said child or teen consumes that product the more calories they will get especially if they see the commercial on a regular basis. If they have a TV or a computer/Laptop in there room then it could lead to the obesity problem being worse than it needs to be, because of these commercials, TVs, Computers/Laptops advertisings every 1 in 3 children born in 2000 will get diabetes and because of this this is the first Generation for kids to be expected to not live longer than their parents.
There are ways of eliminating some of these problems for example in 2010 the healthy hunger free act gave more money to the schools for healthier food, if the schools have healthier food plus the Physical Education programs provide good physical activity then the students brain development rates will improve because they are active. If the schools can do it doesn't it mean that the parents can enforce it as well in their own homes they don't need to make drastic changes parents could make little changes here and there to make it more of a normal thing then a completely new lifestyle change.

One challenge is that restaurants are having portion sizes that are five times bigger than they should and need to be. This is a really big cause in obesity because the amount of fat, sugar, and sodium are bigger then they should be as well. This can lead from five to ten pounds of unnecessary weight gain within a year. This is a challenge because people who don't work at the restaurant can't change the size of the portions nor what is put into them, although there are ways to avoid it like getting a different meal that is healthier and not as big. Players in this would be the restaurant owners and how they run their business. The participants would be the consumers because they should know not to order something with such a big portion size and that is a challenge as well because its hard not to get so much of something so good. Solutions to this could be that restaurants have a specific menu or dish that is very healthy and has small portion sizes, another solution could be instead of going to a restaurant for dinner you can stay at home and cook a nice dinner on your own, with a family this could get expensive.
That brings up another challenge, healthy food isn't as cheap as unhealthy food is, so buying a ton of healthy food to make a nice healthy dinner is not as cheap as going to a Denny’s and getting an oversized plate of sodium and fat. One way to help this could be that restaurants could cut back on the sizes. One more way to fix this could be if the government could find a way to make things like chips and cookies more expensive and healthy foods less expensive. These changes could be hard but it is what can get us to a healthier and better world.

In this generation there are more kids who are obese, due to the fact of fattening foods and all the advertisements. Now a days they prefer staying inside and watching television instead of going out and playing. This is not good at all, them being obese just puts them more in risk of getting diabetes and other diseases. And all of this affects them emotionally too. They feel insecure about themselves because of other children making fun of them, but it’s not always about their appearance it’s more about the children's’ health. Parents need to get out there and get help for their children, because only 10 percent of the parents seek medical help for them. The biggest problems are the kids not being active. Most of them stay inside and watch television, and while they’re watching they see all the advertisements which makes them want all the food that’s bad for them. Also it is more likely for them to be eating while watching t.v., so having a t.v. in their room is one of the biggest problems. To top it all off, only 1 out of 6 schools require the physical education class 3 times a week. Then, parents don’t even walk their kids to school they drive them. And it is not always food that’s the problem, juices can have as much sugar as sodas, and energy drinks should not be consumed by children. In this generation there is a big percentage of kids who are obese for many reasons, but we should not let that happen we can stop it!

Children all over America are in a crisis, this crisis is mainly set up mainly by big companies that produce sugary junk food. About $1.5 billion is spent marketing sugary junk food to children. The more children watch TV, the more likely they’ll be eating the foods that are being advertised. Not to mention that while they’re watching TV, the children are sedentary and are not being active. Because of obesity, children are at a much higher risk for asthma, heart disease, and many other symptoms. Obese children also suffer from a much shorter life expectancy than their own parents. 1 in 3 children born after the year 2000 are estimated to eventually develop diabetes. Obesity can also have psychological effects on children: it makes them more prone to low self esteem, negative body image and eventually depression.
It is stated that 20 percent of the raised amount of obesity is due to the unhealthy junk food choices offered at schools. This is a major problem because school isn’t exactly “promoting” healthy foods; in fact they’re having quite the opposite effect on children. Testing showed that about 94 percent of these school lunches failed the “healthy” test. That has a HUGE impact on children and their health. A huge percentage of students, 90 percent to be exact, are eating these unhealthy lunches that the schools provide. The rate of overweight children has tripled since the 1970’s. School lunches are a huge factor in this problem.

What children do after school affects their weight. Most kids watch television or play video games. Children watch up to seven and a half hours of television daily. They should be outside playing but instead they watch television. Studies show that the more television kids watch the more food they will consume, and it is most likely they will consume the food that is being advertised on T.V. Advertisers spend about one and a half billion dollars on advertising for children and it works. It shouldn't but it does. Today children are getting diabetes at the age of twelve and part of the reason why is because they are not being active, they are just sitting on the couch watching T.V. or playing video games.
Some kids don’t even know what fruits and vegetables look like and I think the reason for that is the advertisement towards the kids. Also the parents are not feeding their kids right. Studies show that having a T.V. in the bedroom can cause obesity for young children. I think parents should have their kids go out and do something instead of stay home and eat on the couch all day. They should be in a after school activity like playing a sport or just doing something outside of the house. Its not just children who are not active its also adults and I think that is where the children are getting it because they look up to their parents and they want to do what they do. I think we all need to be more active to help children to become more active.

There is many challenges standing in the way of America overcoming its obesity epidemic. First of all, our instincts are against us. We are genetically wired to crave and indulge in sodium, fats and sugars. We are also genetically wired to eat foods when they’re right in front of us; the temptation has a good chance of getting the better of us. The way we digest food is adapted to the idea of scarcity; in other words, we indulge so we can survive later for when there is a scarcity of food. But there is almost never a scarcity of cheap, convenient food. Communities have become car dependent, another contributing factor, so this also takes away from our level of activity. Because of this car dependency, people need more convenient, and preferably cheap, food. The portion sizes at restaurants have skyrocketed and we are highly likely to eat it all if it is placed just conveniently in front of us.
Your zip code now affects your chances of obesity; and furthermore the longevity of your life. It is all based upon what is offered where you live. Cheap, fast food restaurants tend to be in the lower income neighborhoods. On top of this, fresh fruits and vegetables are much more expensive than junk food. The government is actually helping you make bad food decisions. With the farm subsidies they install, (unhealthy and cheap) end products of corn are more available and cheap than almost everything else! Farmers are rewarded for growing a “model crop” versus a “diverse crop.” Furthermore on these (wrongly placed) subsidies, the amount of vegetables and fruit grown in the USA is not even nearly enough to suffice the suggested amount that everybody is supposed to consume.

One of the many challenges that people have to face is the growing rate of advertisements. Food ads are everywhere. They are on the T.V., billboards, radio, and even on other products. Every major company is trying to market their product but sometimes there product is not the best. Have you heard about the new McDonalds fish mcbites? Of course you have. The commercial is always on the TV. It seems that every time I turn it on in the first 5 minutes the commercial comes on. I was recently going to the beach last week and guess what came on the radio. Yep you guessed it the annoying song that McDonalds came up with to advertise their new food. I looked in to their new fish mcbites and of course they’re not anything close to healthy. The regular size had a whopping amount of 20 grams of fat. Not to mention the 370 calories that you will be consuming while eating this. Not only are the calories and the fat bad for you but also the amount of sodium. In the Fish Mcbites you have 630mg of sodium. That is 26% of what you are supposed to have in a day. All of this information is just for the fish itself. Not to mention that with your fish you will want to add some high fat over saturated thing that McDonalds calls ranch dressing. Food advertisements should have limits. The food that is advertised should be approved by the FDA to predestinated healthy standards.

ReplyDeleteThere are some challenges in our nation, such as the weight of our nation is becoming out of hand. Lately children and adults are becoming more obese. This generation is bigger than ever, and it needs to be changed. Obesity is a scary thing, obesity is not just about being overweight. Obesity has been known to cause other health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. Those are all very serious life threatening issues. Another problem with obesity is that it is a lot harder to lose weight than to put on weight. Losing weight can be a real challenge for some people. I propose that we educate people about this massive problem. We need to stop obesity while we can. One solution to obesity is to not eat so much, restaurants serve unnecessarily big portions, people eat when it is unnecessary. If people stop snacking so much they could be less heavy. Kids are becoming obese, this is scary because children are eating way too often and they are eating unhealthy foods. Advertisement has a lot to do with the fact that kids eat unhealthy foods. Kids watch television and see unhealthy foods, like cookies and chips, being advertised with their favorite characters. This is a tactic that is being used to target children and to get parents to buy unhealthy foods. This needs to be ended. I propose that we advertise organic foods, fruit, and vegetables on childrens television channels and make them appealing to kids.

ReplyDeleteIn the video, it say that a bottle of a 10 ounce coke has 10 teaspoons of sugar. If kids at school have access to toxic foods like soda, that have high sugars then its likely you will become obese. At most schools soda is banned but is replaced by the industry with similar bad substances and they try to make it look healthy so people think that its ok to drink it. When kids see food advertisements on tv then they want to eat it because thats the food that they recognize and it looks good! So when schools have vending machines or different food places to choose from, kids choose juice and a pizza because it is fast, fast, fast.
Schools are also starting to not require P.E. They are making it optional for kids.Without the physical activity in school then the kids will have less focus in class. 54% of adds for energy drinks are advertised to us and the commercials seem like it is fun and does not say the outcome over time in drinking it. It may give you energy because there is so much sugar but really you will get tired eventually and end up with lots of sugar in your body which would lead to obesity. Kids would rather stay inside and go on their computers, phones, play videogames, or watch tv. We are so accustomed to using technology rather than actually going and meeting people places, that takes too much time. That is why students should be required to take P.E instead of making it a option to kids because what are they going to pick? To some kids P.E is their only exercise and if they keep on eating sugary foods and drinks then they would become obese.

There are many challenges with the obesity epidemic throughout the nation. One important one though, is that our farmers are awarded for their mono-crops, harvesting one crop, than for diversity, and these mono-crops are corn and soybeans. Because the farmers are awarded for this, they keep growing more of the same crops and leaving behind others. This Cause the chain reaction of less healthy food and more junk food. The definite big players in the “game” is the government, the companies buying the corn and soybeans, and the farmers who are just trying to get by. The government because they are awarding the farmers for only growing corn and soy instead of growing fruits and vegetables. The companies because they are supporting this growth and encourage it to keep going to make unhealthy food to make a profit. And then the growers, they are the ones who do the “dirty” job, growing what they can to support a family and pay bill they can't help it to grow what will give them the most profit they have to to live. The best solution that comes to mind is starting with the government, award the farmers who are producing the fruits and vegetables and not the corn and soybeans. By doing that it would change the companies venue from unhealthy to healthy. And with that same chain affect the Farmers would be able to produce what they want and still be able to support their families and pay the bills.

The challenges that we struggle with is if we are served more food at restaurants or fast food places than we will eat more. If we look at the amount of bad calories on the foods or beverages its most likely we will not turn down the food. All that matters at that moment is to satisfy your hunger and you don't fret about what may be in it because it taste so good. This result to living a shorter life because if you are obese there is many health issues that can cause death. Also the community we live in has changed, less people don't walk or ride bikes because of our modern agriculture. Why walk or ride bikes when we can drive or ride a bus? Screen time increase is 7.5 and with easy access to unhealthy foods that is cheap is a result to being overweight and not being able to do things because you uncomfortable with your body. If you're poor and groceries end up to be hundred and fifty dollars for a couple meals then and you can't afford that where else is there to eat? Fast foods companies targets low income families.
Being educated is important because you can be taught that over time, do you want to live longer or die young? Also younger kids can be taught to know what veggies are so that they recognize healthy foods just like when they recognize the golden arches.

One challenge is that low economic areas have higher rates of obesity. Areas that have less money and are poor have higher rates of obesity because they don't have money to buy expensive healthy food, So they buy food like McDonalds that are easy and cheap. The kids in these areas don't get exercise because they don't have money for parks. These kids in these areas play in the parking lots when all the cars leave they have no place to exercise and i think that needs to be changed. 36% of adults have cardio vascular diseases but those statistics could be a result of the statistics that 1 of 4 adults gets no physical activity at all. So not only is it the money situation holding these kids back but possible it's their peers examples that are not leading them to a healthy happy life. In the video we watched in class on the challenges there was a store on the corner and the interviewer asked the guy working in there about these kids in these areas. The man said that one day a kid came into his store and he was eating raw broccoli and the kid asked what he was eating not knowing what raw broccoli was. The corner store worker said that kids come in before school and they always get unhealthy breakfast like honey buns, He said that the unhealthy food that's processed is a part of these kids lives and that they don't know what fruits and vegetables are. I think that's because there parents and the food surroundings their around everyday I think that if we can get the kids on the right path then the generations coming up will realize that all this unhealthy and fast food is not a good thing.

And why wouldn’t it be there’s millions of a fast food restaurant in every corner of the United States. there’s burger king Wendy’s McDonald’s carl’s junior jack in the box etc. there’s is so much I don’t even know all of them. But not only fast food chains sell greasy food there’s other joints that sell the same thing but aren’t as world known. There’s advertisement everywhere you go there’s advertisement’s on billboards on the freeway roads streets etc. there’s all sorts like sodas hamburgers pizza candy. There’s commercials advertising on cereals like honey nut cheerios corn flakes fruity pebbles reeses puffs McDonald’s burger king Wendy’s jack in the box pizza hut there’s millions of commercials advertising food and all of this advertisements are aimed specially at children. I think television has a great impact on this to millions of kids watch TV. and they see all of these commercials and they want all of the food. But there’s also healthy kids meal you can order at fast food restaurants. But it’s the parent’s responsibility to take them to those restaurants or not there just advertising the choice id from the consumer

I believe that the lunches should have healthy foods required when they buy something.

There are several challenges with the obesity epidemic in America. I think one of the main ones is that restaurant portions are two to three times more than we need. I think the owners of the restaurants are to blame because they are the ones who are putting the foods on the menus, but it could also be the consumers because they are expecting big portions. I think a solutions is to cut down the portions to the amount we need and not two times more.
Another challenge is that some kids don’t even know what a fruits and vegetables are. The people to blame is pretty much everybody. Theres the parents for not feed them correctly, theres the advertisers for advertising junk food and not healthy foods, and then theres the school lunches that do not have any healthy foods. A solution is to get the information out and have kids learn about all the different types of fruits and vegetables.
Another challenge is that in some places there are no parks for children the play so they have to play in parking lots and wait until all the cars are gone to do so. The government should be held responsible because I think there should be parks from a walking distance wherever you live. Kids should be able to play on playgrounds near their houses instead of in a parking lot where it could be dangerous. A solution is to get parks for those who do not have them because it is a big deal for being active and not being obese.

ReplyDeleteIn the video, Children of Crisis, my thoughts on the school lunches is that they’re not serving the students with enough healthy foods to meet their everyday requirements. The kids are exposed to sugary beverages and high calorie snacks which are available for them at the counter. 90% of students eat lunch at school, so they’re exposed to junk food everyday. If they buy a 12 oz coke, that would be equivalent to 10 teaspoons of sugar. School lunches should be more healthy, so it can keep their energy up and they can focus during class. Sugary beverages keep up your energy too, but it’s not resistant and you become extremely tired after a few hours. Regarding PE at school, there are no federal laws for requiring PE (which I believe to be a huge mistake). One of the reasons of high percentage of obese kids is that they don’t get enough daily exercise. 1 of 6 schools in states require PE for 3 days a week. If kids are eating junk food during lunch, and don’t get enough exercise every day, then that contributes a lot to obesity in this country. Also, outside of school, kids are spending hours a day in front of a computer and/or a TV. There was a little girl in the video who was 8, and she had a TV in her bedroom. Most likely, she’s spending the rest of her day in her room watching TV. Kids don’t go outside anymore because it’s ‘more fun’ to stay inside, watching TV shows and eating junk food. Technology, i.e. phones, laptops, TV, etc, is preventing kids from going outside and running around. If we take away all their technology, they’d have no choice but to go and play outside. But this is also a problem for the parents. Kid’s parents don’t want kids to go outside and play because they think it’s dangerous and risky. So that’s another factor in the reason why kids don’t get enough exercise. Obesity is a huge problem in this country, we all know that. But for some reason, not a lot of people are doing anything about it. (companies and businesses) Look back a few years, children are always on the streets playing games and being....Well, KIDS. Now that technology is added to the picture, it takes it all away. I went off topic a bit, so let me just jump right back to the main idea of this paragraph: Junk food and sugary beverages in school lunchrooms need to go, and PE should be required everyday during school hours.
One of the challenges that we face are portion distortions. Many restaurants are serving food that is twice as much of what a portion should be. Honestly, they’re serving meals that are enough to feed 2 people. This is one of the causes as to why Americans are obese. When people go to restaurants, they typically want as much as they can get at a low price. Companies want profit, so if customers want to fill themselves up and have bigger portions, then businesses will meet those demands. McDonalds have “supersize me” with portions that exceed what someone would normally need to eat. America’s portion distortions are a huge issue, because the reason why people’s waistlines are increasing is because their portion sizes are increasing. A simple solution is to decrease our current portion sizes to a reasonable amount. Honestly, is it so hard? we’re not asking you to recall anything since this would be all in a restaurant, and they all cook the food the day that it’s ordered. All I’m asking is to decrease the portion sizes to what a normal human being would eat. Get rid of the “supersize me”, you don’t need to supersize anything. Educate people into realizing that a bigger portion at a low price is not what they need. Don’t try and fill yourself up to the point where you can barely walk, because it was cheaper. For one thing, it’s probably high in calories and unhealthy, and two, it goes over the limit of how big someone’s portion size SHOULD be. Would you really compromise your our health just to save a few bucks?

One of the challenges in our society is that kids are eating bad foods. its not really the kids fault because they see these commercials of their idols, and think if they eat that type of junk food they can be cool. And kids aren't getting the right amount of exercise, not only that, they aren’t eating their vegetables. And another challenge could be the places kids eat at. Most restaurants and fast food places don’t have smaller portion sizes. So kids might be obligated to eat all of the food, or their parents might get mad at them, or say it's wasting food.

In our society today, a major crises as a whole is obesity. In this fight against healthy foods and healthy portion size, the rate of obesity among children has risen by a lot. This has caused an epidemic. Fast food places such as McDonalds, In-N-Out, Burger King, and Taco Bell, not only serve unhealthy, inorganic processed foods, but they also serve and promote eating large. Selling foods such as the “Big Mac,” “4 by 4 Burger,” “Whopper Burger,” or “12 Taco special,” they are handing out deals that save you money in the long run but jeopardize and give you the risk of bad eating habits and even health issues like diabetes.

Children in Crisis: Challenges
Looking at how not-so-well-off most of the school districts in the United States are, it is no surprise that they would have to cut costs somewhere. Whether it be laying off teachers and making classes larger, cutting the technology and maintenance budgets, or cutting a little cost from everything, it would seem that the first thing to get the short end of the stick is, in many cases, the school lunch budget. Most of the time, the reason why schools opt for less healthy, more processed, and often less appetizing food is because of the budget. That food is cheaper. It is as simple as that really. To add to that, they seemed to have caught on to the fact that selling items such as bags of chips and bottles of sports drinks will get the school extra money, because it is cheaper and the students are far more likely to go for that then they would the more expensive salad bar option. So what is the solution? Cutting the money from elsewhere? More fundraisers? Private investors to donate to the districts? None of these options are ideal, nor are they guaranteed to get the schools enough money to keep up a healthy school food plan, but they might get them enough money to get one on a trial period. There are some schools in the United States that are able to have a healthy school food program and at the same time stay within their budget. They are the models for what most school food programs need to be.

When was the last time you looked at a school lunch and thought that it actually looked appetizing? I certainly cannot recall the last time I did. The truth is, it is a common misconception that school lunches are healthy, when in fact, they are often times more processed then what school-age kids eat at home. It is all made up of tough chicken, greasy pizza, wilted greens, and cheese that is so processed that it would bounce if you threw it on the ground. The food is also chalked full of preservatives, so that it would be useable for a longer period of time. The schools also sell sugar-filled juices and sports drinks, and sometimes (depending on the school and district) soda and candy bars. These choices, alongside the abundant food choices available to them outside of school, are setting them up for health complications such as diabetes and liver disease as they become adults and teenagers. The districts like to claim that they are providing healthy food options for the kids, when often times those “healthy” options are the tomato sauce on pizza with a bell pepper topping. Many schools do offer salad bar options, but these are often bypassed by the students, who are usually more interested in the rack of chips that are placed next to it. This is not an issue that is sectioned only to states such as Illinois, Mississippi, Tennessee, or Texas. This is seen in school districts everywhere.

The way America lives today has had extreme changes throughout all the years. People are consuming very unhealthy foods because the companies are not trying to change the way they make their food and the ingredients that are going into it. Our people are becoming very unhealthy and it’s due to the food they are consuming. People are starting out at a young age to learn to eat very unhealthy in school and other places. People are becoming overweight and that leads them to obesity, they are also getting very serious diseases starting at young ages such as obesity and diabetes. in the last 30 years are DNA has not changed but our environment has.one of the biggest challenges in America is the life expectancy of people in our generation because of all the health problems and, all the unhealthy food we crave and the diseases we are getting are harming our bodies and people are not living their lives as long as they possibly can. Many areas do not even
provide an open play area or playground for kids in their communities it is such a big commission just to get the children to the play grounds that parents can't do it. Obesity keeps getting worse and worse so we need to stand up and change it now. People need to speak out and demand things to help them maintain healthier lifestyles. Obesity is one of the main causes of deaths within children and adults

ReplyDeleteAfter watching this video, I have realized how out of control child obesity is. One big issue is school lunches, school lunches really need to be improved. School lunches don’t have the best food choices and are filled with a lot of calories and fat. Today, School lunches give children 40-50% of kids calorie consumption. Kids should be provided with healthy and organic food at lunch, there is no need for so much sugar, processing, and fat. Another big issue is Physical education at schools. A lot of schools don’t have a physical education program. P.E. is really important. P.E is a chance for kids to get exercise, burn energy, and learn about health. I think they should make P.E mandatory! Without P.E children are at a lot higher risk for obesity and other health risks. If we make P.E required to the school system, we would be making a lot of progress to lower child obesity. I think changing simple things, like the way schools feed children and making children do P.E could help a ton to lower child obesity. Little steps like, requiring P.E and making healthier lunch choice lead us closer and closer to a healthier future. All we need is healthier food choices and more physical activity to change the weight of the nation.

Should technology be the reason of children’s over weight? There are many challenges in this video but the on I thought was the main thing was the television. Children just sit on the couch not doing anything but watching television. When they see a commercial with kids screaming and having fun and eating good food their obviously going to ask if they can go there. It’s not just the television, its video games, books, and even driving around. Whenever they hear about this or see it their just not even going to think they’re just going to eat. It’s not just the Fast Foods part either. They need that to bring money to their business so they can keep it and more people can have jobs. It’s a lot of the parents fault for letting them have that a lot. So everybody is blaming the companies when it’s not them. They do it for a living and it’s not their fault that the kids are big. I have personally seen the owner of McDonalds and he is not overweight? He can control his self while other people can’t control their kids eating habits. So there is really nothing you can do to the companies because its not their fault that people eat their food so much. If they did control the way people eat those people would get mad and offended by them and then they will lose money and people will lose jobs. Therefore I Don’t think it’s the companies fault but the people themselves.
