Children in Crisis Reflection
The Weight of the Nation documentary was very disturbing. The most depressing part of it was the Children in Crisis. This section was very concerning to me because of the facts that I they were showing me like how !8% of America’s youth is overweight, and that 94% of school lunches do not meet the United States Department of Agriculture’s guidelines. These were just a few of the seemingly endless list of facts about what is wrong with America’s youth. In these next paragraphs I will go over some intriguing facts about how dysfunctional our government is getting.
First fact that I want to discuss is the !8% of America’s youth is overweight. This to me is unacceptable. I believe that every kid should have the right to a healthy life, and a good body. Some kids aren't so lucky though, and my best bet is that most of the 18% of obese children are probably have parents that get the minimum wage. This is a big factor in how what you eat will reflect your health. Most people in poverty will search for the cheapest, yet appetite filling meals, these being either McDonalds,or any other fast food companies. We all know how bad fast food is for you, so it would make sense that this part of society would have the higher obesity rate in their youth. This of course is just my assumption of this fact, and I have no evidence backing my claim. So correct me if i am wrong.
Second fact I would like to discuss is that 94% of schools lunches do not meet the requirements set in place by the USDA. Alarming right, but this makes sense since after all us Americans do not have that big of a budget for our schools, and that would be why they go for the bad stuff. I do feel really bad about this, and I want the change, but I feel that it’s the governments deal for where budget goes.

In watching the documentary “Weight of the Nation”, I learned that there are many children in the world that are very obese. Now I believe that the child obesity epidemic can be the fault of the parents, or the children. Parents think that it is dangerous for their children to go outside for unsupervised play, but how did they play? I’m sure that the parents went outside without any adult supervision and they are still alive and safe, parents can’t be afraid that their children will do something stupid when it comes to being healthy, if the kids are obese they need to go outside and get exercise and run around because that and a healthy diet are the only way that they can be healthy.
When schools don’t offer Physical Education as a class they are doing a disservice to the students and their parents. When a student does P.E. at school they are more active and therefore can burn calories that they are consuming at school and at home and can teach their parents the things that they do at school and then their parents can be healthier too. Also when you give kids the choice of what they eat as school, they will usually pick the unhealthier things because they taste better, but if you do not let kids pick what they eat and only give them healthier food at school than they won’t be getting all of those extra calories. You could argue that kids will bring their own lunch but because it is faster and more cost efficient for parents to hand their children two dollars to buy a meal at school than it is to go to the grocery and spend fifty dollars for a weeks worth of food for lunch.

In the documentary “weight of the Nation.” I learned that one in three children born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes. This is and some what not surprising due to the fact that eighteen percent of children are currently obese. Especially because food marketing is becoming out of control. Companies are now marketing items high in sugar, fats, and salts towards children because they are their number one customers. Companies know that some parents will do anything to make their child happy so that parents will begin to buy their children food high in fat just to get on their good side. Once it is too late only ten percent of parents will seek help for their obese children. Once the child is obese and the parent doesn’t do anything to prevent further obesity the child has a greater risk for diabetes, asthma, and even cancer as his or her age progresses. Another factor that causes child obesity is that as well as eating poorly is not exercising enough. Today only twenty percent of children are walking to school, which makes them dependent to a car. Now schools across America recommend physical education and some don't require or recommend it at all. Only three states out of fifty require physical education. Schools feel as though education is more important than physical activity but they don't realize the harm they are doing to a child when they are not being physically active and they will be so full of energy that they won't focus in class. In conclusion No exercise and a poor diet can do much more harm to a child than someone would expect.

Children in Crisis Reflection:
I think that childhood obesity is a very large problem in our society. Many kids are very lazy and do not like to get outside and play. I personally love get outside and play, but many kids don’t and that leads overweight kids and eventually obesity. And i think eating badly and not exercising is a huge factor. 18 % of children are currently overweight along with two thirds of America. It is common to see obesity in a 10 to 12 year old child, and having a television in their room is thought to lead to obesity. Only 20 percent of children at schools eat breakfast, and 80 percent of schools exceed the fatty food limits. Also, 80 percent of kids are driven to school. Physical Education is no longer mandatory in most schools. It is only required in 5 schools in the united states, and that may be one of the leading causes of obesity. The Obesity epidemic is said to have started in the 1980’s but has skyrocketed in the last 5 years. Obesity is a contributing factor the 5 of the 10 leading causes of death. ( Cancer, Stroke, Diabetes, Kidney Disease ) Obesity is the biggest epidemic ever seen, and has killed many people. They call it the “obesity era”. 36 percent of people have cardiovascular disease, and 25 percent of people have extra fat in their liver. Obesity is also a very expensive disease. Health Care costs are projected to exceed 30 BILLION by the year 2018

Children in Crisis Reflection
Childhood obesity is taken lightly, the health consequences are greater than in adults with a much greater risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and the chance of asthma. With these problems in mind, it’s not astonishing that experts fear that this may be the first generation of American children who will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. In one generation, obesity has risen three times with eighteen percent of children obese, and research shows that children born after the year two thousand will have a high chance of developing Type 2 diabetes. There are many contributing factors to the rising obesity epidemic, such as the fact that only one in six schools require Physical Education for at least three days, only five states now make Physical Education as a graduation requirement, also there was half a billion dollars spent on marketing to kids on food alone.
Many say that children have the option to be healthy or obese, but really they don’t. With ninety percent of students eating lunch at school and eighty percent of school lunches exceeding the recommended amount of sodium and fat, forty to fifty percent of children’s daily intake of calories consist of school lunches, it makes sense that America’s children are obese. Two out of three adults being obese is a significant factor to the childhood obesity epidemic. With technology in the hands of many children, many just sit at home, studies show that having a television in your bedroom increases the chances of obesity, and the amount of junk eaten has skyrocketed from 2004 to 2009 with the sales of energy drinks increasing by 240 percent.
In 1900, America began looking for major cause of death: Black Plague, Flu, and Pneumonia, today, obesity is the risk factor for five of the ten leading causes of death (Heart Stroke, Diabetes, Heart Disease, etc.) diabetes alone contribute to forty percent of deaths in the United States. While one third of Americans are overweight, an additional one third are obese, by 2030 scientists predict that about 50 percent of Americans will be obese. This extra fat has nowhere to go, because of this, some twenty five percent of Americans have excess fat in their liver. Obesity is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly, it may be one of the greatest problems in America.

The documentary, The Weight of the Nation, discussed the the growing problem of obesity in America. The section called Children in Crisis talked about obese children and what is being done to prevent obesity among children. In the last generation, obesity has tripled and it is estimated that one in three children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes at some point in their life. It is believed that one of the main contributing factors of obesity among children is television. Having a television in your bedroom is closely linked with childhood obesity. The reason for this is that many of the advertisements that are targeted at children are for unhealthy foods. I do not think that it is a good idea to have a television in your bedroom because it encourages children to be more lazy. Also, children are very impressionable and the advertisements that they see really affect them.
Another shocking part of the documentary was when they discussed school lunches. 99% of schools participate in the school lunch program. 90% of these schools did not meet the USDA recommendations and 80% of these schools exceeded salt and fat recommendations. Many schools give the students the option of eating junk food and sugary beverages instead of healthy food. These schools claim that it is faster and more efficient to feed the children unhealthy food. Here at Foothill, we have many healthy foods in the cafeteria. I am very pleased with the cafeteria here and I always feel like I have healthy options.
I was shocked to find that so few schools require or encourage physical activity. Only one out of six schools require PE three times a week. On top of this, there is no federal law that requires PE, instead it is up to each state to decide what the regulations will be. Out of all of the schools in the country, 4% of elementary schools, 8% of middle schools, and 2% of high schools require daily PE. These statistics shock me because physical activity has been linked with increased brain activity. If students are exercising then they will do better in school. This documentary really surprised me and I was shocked to learn some of the things that I did. I think that if we try, we can reverse the growing obesity problem.

After watching the Weight of the Nation Children in Crisis, I faced the reality that eighteen percent of children are obese. It’s hard to think that just being obese gives children a higher chance of getting diabetes, heart disease, and will be the first generation of children that will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. I feel like the children that are obese don’t know the risks and only ten percent of the parents of obese children will seek professional help. The other ninety won’t do anything about it. At this rate, the worst case scenario would be that by 2050, fifty percent of americans will be obese.
I think that kids now don’t know the importance of exercise. Now, eighty percent of children get driven to school when many of them live close enough to walk. Also,Even one fourth of adults do no exercise at all. That shows us that adults are either too lazy to do any kind of physical activity at all, or they don’t have time because of their busy schedules whether it’s because of their job hours, or taking their children to the places they need to be. This could affect their kids in a way. Their kids could think, “ Oh, my parents don’t do excercise, so I don’t have to either.” This can be dangerous because children who are obese have the same metabolic traits as a twenty five year old. Also, if obese girls continue to be obese in their teenage years, half of them will be overly obese by the time they are thirty.

After watching the Weight of the Nation: Children in Crisis, I was saddened to see that obesity was a contributing risk factor to five of the ten leading causes of death. Diabetes causes 40% of deaths in the U.S. I have always known that a good percent of the population of the United States were obese, but the fact that ⅓ of American adults are obese, and 18% of children are obese, is very shocking and terrifying. I think that all people that are at risk of being obese or overweight, or are obese or overweight, should take action to get themselves back on a healthier diet, and exercising on a good routine.
I think it is mainly the parent’s responsibility to keep track of their children’s health because they children aren’t really old enough to understand how to keep track of their diet and to exercise healthily. The fact that children eat twice as many calories at restaurants as they would at home is very sickening. Another reason we are seeing an increase in a child’s weight is because children consume an average of 7.5 hours of media everyday. Another sad part is 80% of kids get driven to school, and I bet a lot of the kids that get driven to school, are in walking distance. If more kids would walk to school, this would probably lower how many kids are obese in the United States.
Another contributing factor to children being obese is their parents. The parents are a huge part of what a kid’s diet is, and how much they exercise. Parent’s are the figure that push their children to make the right decision when choosing which foods to eat. Only 10% of the parents in the United States get professional medical help if their child is obese or overweight. I think the parents are the main reason if a child is becoming overweight or obese because children aren’t old enough to decide what is, or isn’t healthy.

Children in Crisis Reflection
In the documentary “Children in Crisis” I was analysing how the children were reacting to the problem and how the adults were reacting. The parents of the children were in my mind a good influence however they tended to over think of what the children needed to do at times. The Children often did not tell the parents when they felt that they were being controlled or “smothered” by advice and attempts at helpful facts. I feel like the obeasity epidemic in the United States is a problem and we need to do something about it, but I feel like the problem is not always the food people eat, it is the amount of exercise or lack of it in some cases.
Parents in the movie were often trying to help their children in their road to becoming healthier by helping with portion control, exercise and what they eat. I can eat all the food in the world but I am not going to just stay the same way I am now. I feel like that we could do a lot better at eating healthier, however I feel we need to do more in the exercise aspect of things. I also think that in the movie when they used the “BMI” test it would not be that much of a help. For example when I was in middle school I ran cross country. I could run a 6 minute mile lift twice my body weight and do any obstacle course in a snap of the finger. The only problem is I have never passed the “BMI” test because of the way my body is.
In America Two out of Three people are obease. This is because our children are not getting enough exercise and not eating right. Going back to what I said earlier, I think the exercise part is more important in this matter but I also think we need to watch what we eat. That bag of pork rinds at the gas station may look good but in the long run it is going to hurt you if you do not exercise. Ninety percent of kids in the U.S. eat lunch. Twenty percent eat bearkfast!!! We need to educate our children in how to Balance the two in order to be healthy.

In watching the film “The Weight of the Nation”, I realized that there really is a weight problem in the United States of America. There are a lot of of overweight kids in America because the children barely get any exercise and eat unhealthy foods. Only five states in the United States of America force their schools to have a physical education class, and there is still no federal law requiring physical education. Children today barely get any exercise only thirty percent of kids walk to school, eight percent of girls and nine percent of boys are at a passing weight. It is mainly that parents fault that children are overweight, the kids do not choose their environment or the food their parents buy. The children of today and the grandchildren of tomorrow will have a shorter life expectancy, because of their weight.
Two thirds of people in the United States of America are overweight; according to statistics, in 2030 fifty percent of adults will be obese. The CDC stated that the obesity epidemic started in the 1980’s and has been on the rise ever since. I think that the government should be supportive, and try to get people to eat right and exercise daily. The problem with the weight of people in the United States of America is that they are not trying to be healthy, if people wanted to be healthy they would be. It is the governments job to inspire people and make them want to lose weight. If you make them want to lose the weight, they will lose the weight.

In the move “The Weight of a Nation” they get down to the real problems in the U.S which is obesity and how we need to fix this huge problem we have gotten into. I believe that in order to win we need to lose. We need to beat our craving for this fast food, we are going to need to beat the companies that are processing this food and feeding us with it. In order for us to beat obesity, and the the craving, we are going to need to beat ourselves.
In the movie, “The Weight of a Nation”, they show many things that took me by surprise. An example of this is that 18% of the U.S is obese , or that ⅓ of the CHILDREN in the U.S will become obese, finally obesity is the most contributing factors to diseases that could kill you. The worst part of it all is that most of these people are not even educated on the effects of eating McDonalds, and becoming obese. The main thing that i believe that the government should take this in a serious manner and take action and educate people on this Crisis in America. In order for us to beat obesity and not be know as the obese era we need to educate our people. But we cannot blame the government for everything that has happen to us. We need to take responsibility, educated and get active. If we do all that then theres little to no doubt in my mind that we will not beat obesity.

Children in Crisis
The average human has already been adapted to all the fats, sugars and salts that are found in many of today’s food. 1.6 billion dollars is spent each year by food industries, marketing to young children. Kids ranging from the ages 8-18 say they spend, on average, more than 7.5 hours a day in front of some sort of device. That's including; television, using the computer and also playing video games. Scientists have done a lot of research and have concluded that children spending too much time in front of the television are more likely to become overweight or obese. Many people tend to snack or eat dinner in front of their televisions. What many people don't know is that when your watching t.v you end up eating way more than intentioned of fatty foods that are way high in calories. Children watch around 12-21 food commercials a day. Food industries usually spend more time on hiring celebrities or using a famous cartoon to star in their unhealthy food product commercials. Most commercials say that the food has a great source of fiber or has great vitamin D, when really there is only about a pinch of that fiber and a pinch of that vitamin D. The people that would be most affected are the low income families because, major food industries have made it so much more easy to buy fast food for a low cost. Some people do crave fruits and many other foods that are healthy but, many times when people go to food markets or a stand that sells fruits but is surrounded by stands that have junk food, people often start craving the cheaper fatty foods that are being sold nearby. People are responsible for making their own decisions on what to eat and what not to eat. However, I do believe that food industries do influence peoples choice quite effectively.

WotN Reflection
This documentary regarding the obesity epidemic in America was very informative, yet really told us, “Hey, you’re doing something really wrong, and it’s affecting everybody.” The Children in Crisis is one of the most sad parts of the video. It really gives us facts on that our generation might be the first in history to have a shorter life expectancy. Facts like “Sugar-sweetened beverages are the largest source of sugar in the diets of children and adolescents”, “Many Americans consume more calories than they need but still do not meet recommended intakes for a number of nutrients.”, and even a scary “Due to funding cuts...- ...daily physical education is rare in schools. Nationwide, only 4% of elementary schools, 8% of middle schools, and 2% of high schools provide daily physical education”, it really shows us that even though it was a law to provide physical education, many schools cannot even provide the daily exercise a normal human being needs.
In the video, more than 20% of 2-5-year-olds are either overweight or obese, this is insane! Only 25% of US preschool children get the recommended daily servings of vegetables, which does not help a child grow properly! Preschool children now spend more than 4 hours a day watching TV and videos! Even though high schoolers do the same things, it is even more dangerous to have a 4-year-old have their minds exposed to 4 HOURS of television than have a teenager play games for 4 hours. That amount of time can be used to be learning new things in the world, not learning how much a Big Mac from McDonalds is.

In this documentary I was shocked to learn that eighteen percent of the children and two thirds of the adults in America are either obese or severely overweight . One in THREE children born in 2000 will be obese and only ten percent of the parents will seek medical help. This is so bad that doctors and scientists are calling this an epidemic. They even predict that in the future they will call this the obese age.
Most of the people who are overweight have a higher risk to get heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer or death.I found that in 1900’s most people died from cholera, the flu, diarrhea, tuberculosis, and other infections. In the 1980’s the obesity epidemic started along with other chronic disease. In 2000 most people are now dying from heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer. Obesity contributes and leads to five of the ten leading causes of death. I think that we have advanced by being able to cure infections but now we face obesity that can be prevented and it also leads to five of the leading causes. Scientist predict that in 2030 thirty two percent to fifty three percent will be obese, thirty six percent will have heart disease and twenty five will have excess fat in their liver. By 2018 they predict that America will be spending three hundred billion dollars in health care, thats almost two hundred billion more dollars. It costs less to prevent than to cure or pay for medicine.
Another thing I was shocked about was what the schools feed the kids and how much exercise students get. I was never thought about how the effect of no federal law about making students take physical education in the United States has the effect of only five states requiring all students to take physical education and only one in six schools require physical education. Out of all the schools in the United States only four percent of elementary schools, eight percent of middle schools and two percent of high schools require physical education. In the schools they produce food with a factory assembly line. They want to get more profit so they must choose things kids like, its like a food court at a mall. Now everything must be whole grain and the milk has to be fat free.

Children today seem to be becoming overweight or obese. In this case the cause is because of the food we eat and the lack of exercise, or are forced to eat because kids can’t make their own food and the parents are making the choice for them. The cause are also because how expensive healthy food is and how cheap restaurant food is. Example Mcdonalds has a dollar menu which forces poor family’s to buy that food, rather than healthy food because of expenses. But wealthy normal family’s sometimes don’t realize why their child is becoming over weight. The food and the lack of exercise.
And because of our media showing more unhealthy foods then healthy foods that are good for us. Which makes the children want that, rather than a good healthy breakfast, and so on.
Now that we talked about that let's talk about exercise. Schools do need decent exercise tools and activities.
This is important for kids at school like me and everybody else. This burns off calories and helps you lose weight if you try. This should not just be in school, should be outside of school get more active and hang with friends outside and run. This way we can keep ourselves in shape and healthy. As you can see what I am just talking about is that exercise is important in our life and obesity is just ganging up on people because they choose to sit all day and watch tv or play games.

I feel that this documentary did a very well job on spreading awareness of dangers of obesity in the younger generation. Two thirds of the nation’s children are obese which I find outrageous, considering that in the 1900s, people were plagued with flus, fevers, and other infectious diseases. Not even a century later, people were dying from chronic diseases that are absolutely preventable. In the 1960s, only 14% were obese and overweight, compared to in 2030 it is expected that 53% of the nation will be obese. If you vision a classroom in 2030, half of the kids will be overweight and that is horrifying because they are children! They have a whole future ahead of them, they should be able to live a happy and healthy life and shouldn’t have to live with these conditions that adults are diagnosed with. One source that is causing kids to become overweight are school lunches. Foods eaten at school represents 40-50% of a kid’s calorie intake. School lunches, especially lunches at large schools, in a sense are just as bad as fast food meals. Most schools work with a pre-packed system with frozen foods for fast processing. These lunches are essentially low in nutritional value, so low in fact that pizza is now recognized as a vegetable. 94% of schools do not meet the nutritional standards, and 80% of school lunches exceed the suggested fat content. It was later discovered that the majority of parents thought their children were consuming healthy lunches at school. Although it may cost a bit more investment in money, we need to bring healthier lunches to schools. Kids’ lives are at risk just because they are doing what their human bodies were designed to do, and the percentage of overweight children is continuously increasing.

This is a very serious problem in my opinion. Children already in danger of having type 2 diabetes. 18% of children are obese that is a very big percentage in the world. Childhood obesity has tripled in this generation this is not good at all this generation is living off fast food. Studies of shown that ⅓ of children born in 2000 will have diabetes some time in their lives. The truly shocking part in my opinion is that only 10% of parents seek help for their children everyone should check for at least an opinion to see what to do to help their kids.
PE is now optional except for 5 states that is shocking. We should live in a world where PE is a must! Not just a choice it has to be a MUST! In Santa Ana there are no parks for the kids to play. I find this really shocking where in the world does a kid have to go to play in a park. Luckily the moms in the community have stepped up and told the mayor there has to be a park.
The world needs to step up as a NATION and solve this epidemic together not alone TOGETHER. If we work together this problem can be solved and worked out . We can solve this problem in a matter of years if we can stop this. I believe this epidemic can be stopped.

I think than childhood obesity is a huge problem in our society. Today’s children are tomorrow's adults and the future workforce of America. If American adolescents are growing up obese and overweight than we can only expect for our future workforce to be overweight. the obese workforce cost businesses more than $7 billion dollars a year than when today's adolescents start working that number will triple because the obesity rates in adolescents has tripled, unless something is done to decrease this number. I believe we should start with our cafeteria food as it said in the video. I totally agree that the food we feed our student at school is important and that we should have stricter requirements on the food they are served at school. I think that this is important because a greasy slice of bread with tomato paste and processed cheese is not a vegetable. Feeding kids food like that can only make this problem worse, so the United States Government and parents should be more involved with the food being fed to kids in schools. I think a great way for that to happen is a law similar to the parent triggers law in the California. Where is a majority of parents are unhappy with cafeteria food they can do something about it.
Furthermore, I believe it would be a good idea for schools to outsource physical education to companies like SPARK so kid could enjoy working out and meet state requirements. Also the requirements from the state should be change. If physical education is going to be a class then It should be treated like a class, you need to meet the standards before you graduate. In conclusion the government and parents should be more involved with children’s health.

I think we should pay more attention to the weight of the nation because not only more adults are becoming obese, but children are being affected as well. There are many possible reasons or influences for the way obesity started. If we are more aware of the significant causes of obesity we will have more positive outcomes on the nation entirely. We could live with lower healthcare cost, longer lifespan, and all around more of a healthier nation. However, what will it take to accelerate change?
More and more children are being affected by obesity from various causes. 18% Of children are obese. It has been said that this generation will be the first generation with a shorter lifespan than their parents. Children who are obese are more likely to have a lot more health problems. For example, children who are obese will have a higher rate of becoming diabetic and are commonly found with high insulin. Parents should be more aware of the significant effects of obesity. Only 10% of parents seek medical help for their children who are obese. Parents and the schools should be held more responsible for the children.

The weight of the nation movie was very saddening to me. The whole movie was encouraging to do something about this sad truth. The part that stood out to me the most was the children in crisis. It was difficult to watch so many children suffering because of something they need to live, food. In our society, obesity plays a big role in my peoples lives. Children now are very lazy and would rather sit inside playing video games than go have fun playing outside. 18 percent of children in america are overweight. I believe that a big reason for this is because 80 percent of schools exceed the fatty food limit. As Well as 80 percent of kids being driven to school which takes away the opportunity for exercise. I think that fixing this would be save lives. Obesity is a contributing factor in five of the ten leading causes of death which are cancer, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease. One other thing that could help to end this horrible problem of obesity would be exercise . If schools had more strictly enforced physical education classes there could be an end to obesity and the deaths caused by it. Scientists are predicting that without change, by 2030, 32 percent to 53 percent of people will be obese, 36 percent will have heart disease, and 25 percent will have excessive fat in their liver. In the diarrhea, the flu, tuberculosis, and other major infections. Now, most people are dying from heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and cancer. I now see how important it is to do something about what is happening. and ready to help.
