    Children in Crisis Reflection

Currently, we are going through an epidemic of obesity that is striking children, increasing the risk of them having a shorter life expectancy than their parents, thanks to a wide variety of contributing factors. In fact, one in three children are likely to develop diabetes by the year, 2000. For example, only ten percent of parents seek medical assistance for their children. Plus, the marketing of unhealthy foods is a great contribution to this issue, especially when this is done towards children, which is an action that was at one point in the documentary considered predatory behavior. Additionally, preschoolers are exposed to fifty to fifty-four percent more energy drink ads, which potentially influences them to purchase more of these sugar sweetened beverages, which happen to be the largest source of sugar today. To add on to this, most schools participate in the Federal Lunch Program, a program that most parents consider to offer somewhat healthy food for their children, although ninety-four percent of the schools that are related to this have failed to meet the USDA standards for healthy food, and most contain more fat as well. The problem with this system is that, while it is meant to be as efficient as possible in order to gain more profit, it is neglecting more important aspects, such as preventing health risks. It may be worth adding that the twenty percent rise of teens’ BMI (Body Mass Index) are related to more junk food being in schools.

Another issue that should not be ignored is that there is no law that Physical Education should be required at schools, so only one out of three schools have mandatory Physical Education. At this rate, thirty-two to fifty-two percent of American adults may be obese by the year 2030, as some experts have theorised. These numerous concerns have raised my attention to how serious this epidemic has become. It seems to me that the food industry in general currently does not have any care to make its food healthier, because doing so would possibly lead to less profit. Right now, I personally believe that as a nation, we must take more precautions to ensure a healthier lifestyle and longer lifespan by being our own personal advocate for our health and well being.

Well the school lunches there are not healthy choices like you may see a salad but it in this case that salad may not be healthy because the salad probably is not washed, probably it has washed with not clean water. The sides are basically chips or cookies that are bad you should at least have a fruit side dish or something that can be at least some good to your health. Michelle Obama is telling the people to sell fruit as a side dish because now in days in high schools is just too much obesity and sicknesses because of their food that are there eating I s just not a healthy foods you may think that is healthy the salad or maybes a v8 but what you really don’t know is what there really contain or how there produced. So now is a law that the schools have to have a healthy choice as a side of their lunch in the cafeteria. This was taken in 2010. Now is about 99% public school with junk food. The kids are producing the market to grow and grow not just that more obesity and high cholesterol in young age. The schools are giving pre-parks lunches and the food is not fresh is frozen is not even controlled by the principle of what nutrition’s that there kids are eating. Is really bad for the kids health and it look bad for the school to much obesity and even worse they put P.E as and for the kids that are overweight.

    Children in Crisis Reflection
In the United States, obesity rates are three times as much as the last generation. This is a huge problem, children need to be fed nutritious food to become the best they can be. Children are becoming less mobile and less social because of T.V. and video games. Parents have to actually force their kids out of the house because they are so into their electronics. Parents should limit how much their child uses electronics because it affects their health immensely. Because of all the technology they have they do not feel the need to socialize with friends in person because they can text or play videogames with them over the internet. Kids don’t want to do what will help them in the long run, they just want to satisfy short term needs. It’s the parents job to guide their kids in the right direction so they will not be the predicted 32-50% of obese adults in 2030.
Adults this generation are not setting a good example for the next generation. Children do what the parents raise them to do, and one problem is how they eat and the amount of exercise. It is not all the parents fault, they are not informed enough of the causes and effects of obesity until it happens. Eighty percent of students are driven to school, and on average one child will watch 7.5 hours of media per day. Twenty percent of students eat breakfast at school, forty percent eat snack, and ninety percent eat lunch. School lunches should be healthy, and 88.9% of parents think it is but 94% of school lunches failed USDA requirements. Only 10% of parents seek medical help for their obese child, which implies they do not think it is a major problem. All these statistics seem hopeless but if everyone tries to stay healthy then there is only a predicted 30% obesity rate in the year 2035.

    Children in Crisis
Children in Crisis was very shocking, it states that 18% of children in America are obese. 18% does not seem like very much, but as time goes on, the percentage raises. To show examples for this, one in three children born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime, and obesity has tripled in one generation.
In America, five of the ten leading causes of death are obesity related. In many past years, the leading causes of death were things like the flu, or a cold. But with a flu or a cold, there is no cure, and not much someone can do to be healthy again. But with obesity, there is. Exercise, eating healthier, seeing a doctor at least once a month can prevent obesity, and make obese people more in shape. So it is not much of a crisis if there is a cure for obesity, I think the main problem is that people that are overweight or obese do not know what to do or where to go for help, or that they simply do not care. To add to this, only 10% of parents with obese kids get help for them. In the movie Children in Crisis, it states that just because sugary foods say that they are a good source of fiber or protein, it does not mean that the food still has a high fat and sugar rate. Which may make parents think that all of the unhealthy foods are healthy enough to feed their child.
School lunches were another big topic mentioned in the movie Children in Crisis, 40-50% of school lunch food represents a child’s daily calorie intake. To add to that, 99% of kids get a lunch at school. Even after passing the Healthy-Hunger-Free Kids Act, school lunches still served greasy pizza, unhealthy chip items, and sugary drinks. Isn’t school supposed to be for education, where kids can learn to do what is right and wrong, and how to make the right choices? Maybe in class it is, but at lunch, schools are teaching kids that it is okay to eat unhealthy and drink sugar mixed with liquid out of a bottle. This goes to show how much schools really need to step it up and make children healthier. If a child or teenager becomes obese, it is most likely that they will stay obese their whole life. If every child becomes born like this, we will have a nation of obesity.

After watching the Weight of the Nation video it was brought to my attention that their are many factors that contribute to obesity and that 18% of teens are obese not including the over weight. The main reasons that were brought to my attention where the home life, the social life, and the school food. Obesity is stealing our nation and we can only we can take it back.
One way to solve and prevent future obesity is in the home life. Most parents let their kids do whatever they want even if it is nothing at all. The parents and the kids both know that there is a problem but the parents do not do anything because they do not know what to do and the kids do not do anything because it is “too hard”. Also the kids do not need to go anywhere because they can text or e-mail so quickly or they just want to play online video games and eat chips. If the kids were not raised with technology this would not be such a big problem.
Also another problem was social life. if your friends do not want to go out and be active then odds are that you will not either and most kids do not go out and exercise other than P.E. at school. And most P.E. classes do not make the students actually exercise or have the requirements way too low so that the students do not need to try at all. With schools like this is their any real point to these useless classes?
Finally the last problem that was brought to my attention was school food. If a school gives the choice of healthy food and food that is bad for them but taste good the students almost always will choose the junk food. Schools only sell junk food because they want the kids to eat something and they do not want healthy food because it does not taste as good. What people do not think about is that it is such a deadly lifestyle disease and the weight of the nation is in danger, but we still do nothing about this growing epidemic.

    Children in Crisis Reflection
The Weight of the Nation Children in Crisis documentary surprised me and made me perceive obesity in a new way. I couldn’t believe the statistics on obesity, the unhealthy school lunches, the amount of sugar consumed by children, or lously school physical education requirements.
Two thirds of americans are obese and more than thirty percent of americans have obesity related diseases. The leading causes of death are chronic diseases such as diabetes, stroke, and kidney diseases. Really? I find it hard to believe that we are slowly killing ourselves! The most shocking fact is the presumption that my generation will be the first to have a shorter life expectancy than our parents. Childhood obesity is outrageous. The cause is improper diet, exercise, and self control. Schools might be responsible for a portion of the first two causes.
Many schools offer healthy choices for lunch, but the overpowering amount of unhealthy food cause children to gravitate towards to bad decisions. Schools offer twelve ounce beverages like soda and juice that have ten ounces of sugar in them! Many schools have pre-packed meals and other unfresh lunches. I couldn't believe how many children chose unhealthy choices. The most surprising thing schools have done is call tomato paste on pizza as a vegetable. Technically it can be a vegetable, but not a reliable source for vitamins. I just am in shock by schools' lack of effort and crazy declarations.

One of the main contributors to obesity is lack of exercise. Schools nationwide have cut physical education requirements to little or none. I believe children need to exert energy in order to focus and keep from bouncing off the walls. Only five states require physical education, and one out of six schools require it three days a week. Four percent of elementary, eight percent of middle schools, and two percent of high schools require daily P.E. My mind is blown thinking of how little schools care. Also, the statistics that come with the schools that have P.E are surprising. Only eight percent of seniors pass physical education! I just can't grasp that so many schools don't provide children with their daily exercise.

Words can't describe how shocking this documentary was to me. Obesity is practically becoming a pandemic! Not only schools contributing to this with their unhealthy lunches and slacking physical education requirements, but parent’s and children’s lack of responsibility and self control play a key role in this pandemic. Changes need to be made, because there are dire consequences.

After watching “Weight of the Nation, Children in Crisis” movie a thought came to my mind. 18%+ of kids in the U.S. are obese and the child obese rates are tripling by the generation. Kids are actually expected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents! ⅓ of kids born in 2000 will develop diabetes. How is this even possible though you may think? Everyday children are watching TV while eating junk food AND being advertised to “toxic” food that are the worst foods that kids could possibly be eating. To help this congress developed IWG so food advertising is changed. Also on December 2, 2010 congress passed the Healthy-hunger free act, to make school lunches healthier so low income families can eat healthy at school and still be filled up.
Schools are trying harder and harder now to keep their lunches as healthy, yet filling, as much as possible. Schools are doubling the amount of fruit being given during break and adding more orange and dark green veggies. They are also making it so potatoes are only given 2 times a week. They are adding 50% more of whole grains, reducing 53% of sodium, and requiring that chocolate milk is fat free. Though one of their statements in the video was quite unusual, they are saying that pizza is in the vegetable category??!! . . Yes pizza CAN have veggies on them but I wouldn't consider them vegetables.
Not only is food a huge problem but only 5 states are requiring P.E.!! Texas is now the 12th fattest state in the U.S.!! There are also many different illnesses from before people began eating unhealthy and now. Before common illnesses were pneumonia, tuberculosis, diarrhea, influenza complications, and infectious diseases. Now there are chronic diseases, kidney disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and much more! So what does that say about our nation now?? Many things have to be done in order to fix this problem because now it has gone way to far now!

    Children in Crisis Reflection

When I began watching the video, I had no idea that they have places that you can go to get help with obesity. I figured that if you are obese then you are sort of stuck. I thought that the only thing you can do is eat less and exercise. Which I feel is what most of America assumes, being that only 10% of parents seek medical help for their children. I was surprised to see that there were places to help you help yourself. I have been wondering, How much do these places charge for help? What about the low income families who can’t afford this help? This also leads me to believe that the whole system is quite unfair. The places that we are seeing the obesity rates the highest also happen to be the areas where the income rate is the lowest. So if these people are the ones that need help, but are also the ones that can’t afford help, aren't we setting a large percentage of America up to fail? The next question would be, Should these obesity centers be covered by insurance and part of health care? I propose that we initiate a system, possibly made up of volunteers that want to help. These people could do what the other facilities do. I have yet to come up with a way that this would work being that money is an issue. Either way, something must be changed in order to help America’s youth. We need to spread the word about these places that help children. We need to find a way to lower the prices of these doctors and raise the income of the families in need.
Over and over again, people are throwing statistics around and one that I hear the most is what seems to be a well thought out explanation as to why we are eating so much. Doctors claim that we are not genetically programmed to turn down calories. They also claim that our brain is programmed to target sugars, salts and fats because that is what we had to search for when we began civilization. This makes sense to some degree, but I feel like it would be arguable to say that over the next 100 years or so we may also adapt to this way of life. Mutations will occur and our bodies will begin to untarget these food types. My question is, how long will this take to happen and what effects will it have on the economy? It is a far fetched theory going directly against what the officials say, but I feel that humans are made to survive tough situations, and much like we have adapted to store fats, we will adapt to burn fats.

    Children in Crisis Reflection
I think that all children in both elementary schools and middle schools should be actively participating in a physical education program. It’s baffling to see that most schools in the United States do not require a P.E program. I understand that they are more focused on the studies prospect of the situation, but when most of the school is failing the BMI, or any other physical test for that matter, it does not look good either. Younger kids are hyper and always jumping around, and a good way to get rid of the excess energy would be none other than physical education. Kids love running around and just getting a break from work, well, at least most kids do. I think that P.E. in middle and elementary school should definitely be required. Not so much in high school, because most of us are doing a sport and if kids are not, then they need to. Another issue would be the school lunches and how terrible they are. The kids express how they do not like the school lunches or that they try not to eat them. So, why doesn't the school board notice that? If the consumers are not happy with the food, what needs to change? The principal talks about how he needs to focus on the education of the kids attending his school, but I think he should consider the effects the food has on the children. If they are eating bad food, food full of sugar, that does not give the kids the energy to put their education first. Children obesity is becoming a tremendous problem and it is evident to everyone involved. I believe that lengthening the lifespan of our generation should be a top priority. Taking small steps, such as improving the lunch at school, will help reach this goal. If the kids start healthy habits early, it will go with them in their later years. What better way to start with healthy habits than starting at school? Also the issue with the juice and soda. I was very surprised to learn that juice is the equivalent to soda. I do not think parents should be giving their kids soda, because it serves no purpose other than it tastes good. An easier solution could be water or milk or even mixing juice with a significant amount of water. The statistics of child obesity is outrageous, and we need to take serious action to help, because we don’t want America to be known as the fattest country in the world.

After watching this video, I was simply appalled. I found out that the US currently has a whopping 18% and more children that are obese. This is a big number, even though it does not sound like much. Parents, I think, are the ones that mostly contribute to this percent, considering that only 10% of parents seek medical help for their children. That means that 90% of the entire United States doesn’t seek medical help for their children, whether it is obesity or the flu! However, many of these families receive low income from their jobs, making it harder for them to afford to go to the doctor’s office for a weekly or monthly check-up, or even a one-time thing. However, there are other places that are free-of-charge that give medical help to these families and individuals that are obese. Besides this, half of your daily calories come from school lunches, if you manage to have one every day. Also, 94% of these schools served a lunch that was below USDA standards for healthy school meals. That is a HUGE percentage and it definitely needs to be dropped. I think that better food should be served in the cafeteria instead of the cheeseburgers and pizza. I feel that if more fruit and vegetables are served in school lunches, we won’t have to deal with this obesity epidemic. Other than the lunches, there are many kids that get an increase on their BMI (body mass index) because of how much junk food is in the vending machines at schools. No only is it bad for their BMI, but it’s bad for their health. If we keep this up, it is estimated that by 2030, half of the US will be obese, including these children. If we can do something to get these food marketed less to children, they should be able to live a happy life. Today, 1 and a half million dollars are spent on marketing and ads towards children. Most of this food exposed to children is very unhealthy and bad for children. Also, some of the food companies add some fiber, but only about 3%, making it do almost nothing healthy for their bodies.

2/3 americans are obese. Wait what!? 2/3 of americans are obese? How could this be! Don’t we care about our weight, don’t we care about our lifestyle choices or our kids what would they think if they knew the risks obesity had on your bodys?Maybe its because we half more advertising for fast food and other junk products than vegetables and fruits. One and a half BILLION EACH YEAR for marketing.Or maybe that 40-50% of calories for kids come from school and that 94% served lunch that did not meet USDA standards. Its like they don’t care for the kids anymore to provide healthy food for us.It was sading to hear that only 10% of paretns seek medical help for their childs obesity. But i can’t get mad at people for being obese, it's not always their fault. They don’t always have enough money to go buy fresh organic fruits and vegetables and healthy meals. But with the negative side companies are also trying to help the schools by providing fat free milk. With also potatos limited to twice a week like french fries and tater tots and a 53% reduction in sodium.Although school lunches are unhealthy still and most affordable food now days is loaded with fats and salts, I think that if we improve the food quality and quantity it could improve our workers, students, and our economy

There were so many topics and facts that caught my attention, but there were some that made my eyes widen. One fact that caught my attention right away, was that over 18% of teenagers are overweight, and that ⅔ of our nation is overweight.. One statement that they mentioned quite a few times, was that if you, “ go with the flow in the American diet, you are sure to become overweight.” Obviously, much of the nation has gone with the flow and not their own way. It takes strength and determination to want to go your own way so no wonder much of our young adult population is becoming overweight. An issue with the increase in weight gain, is that this is the first generation to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. Another issue with the increase of weight gain, is that there is also an increase in asthma, heart disease, and many other diseases in teenagers. Another problem with weight gain in teenagers, is the bullying. When teens or anyone is bullied about their weight, it holds them back from wanting to achieve their goals. The cause of all of this in young adults, is that as young kids they are introduced to commercials that make the bad foods seem good and they grow up believing that. Food companies don’t take into consideration that their food is crushing the American dream. By that I mean that is is crushing the goals of kids and young adults everywhere because many companies don’t want overweight workers working for them.
One of the most shocking topics that was in the video, was physical education. Physical education is not required in 45 of the 50 states. That means that only five states require Physical Education California being one of them. Why would states not require Physical Education when it could make them look better? It has been proven that physical activity increases the brain thinking. If every state required Physical Education, there would a huge increase in test scores, and a huge decrease in obesity. Based on all of the information we know and the outcomes of bad choices, why don’t the states and the food companies do anything about it? What is more important, having healthy and active citizens, or obese and lazy citizens?

In this film we learned about how children are becoming overweight due to unhealthy diets and lack of exercise. After watching it several things went through my mind one of which was a problem with school cafeterias. The food they are feeding the children is terrible, its full of calories and sugar. I feel like there needs to be a change in this because it is making children vulnerable to develop health problems in the future such as heart disease and diabetes. I live in California so the government and the public school system have come together to address these problems. We are lucky because over in Texas, the 6th most obese state in the country, most of the food has little to no nutritional value. The kids are served pizza, fries, mashed potatoes, and other processed foods. However over here, in California, we are served fruits, vegetables, veggie burgers, low fat chicken burgers, milk, bean and cheese burritos, we even have a salad bar. Not all of it is completely healthy but most of it is. I feel that if other states followed the standards California has it would make a huge difference. On top of all of the food issues only six states require physical education. This means that children are getting fed crap and not even being able to burn it off. This is outrageous, there needs to be a change starting now.

    Children in Crisis
Throughout watching the highly educational documentary, Weight of the Nation: Children in Crisis, the viewer receives many shocking statistics. One if these mind blowing facts are “50% of daily recommended caloric intake for children comes from the school lunches.” I firmly believe that this contributes to the ever growing obesity problem. Children are insanely busy in the mornings and do not have time to pack a lunch, eat breakfast, get ready for school and the millions of other activities necessary for leaving the house to go to school. That is the thinking process of why school meals came to be. The meal plans are a great way to feed the students; however, the food isn’t the healthiest it could be, due to it needing to be preserved. the food items have insane amounts of salt, fat and sugar; which are the ingredients our bodies are programmed to crave. Nutritions recommend for the average teenage child to have a daily intake of two thousand calories; however, people take in more and become overweight, then obese is because they are taking in more calories than they burn off. These children need to be exposed to healthy foods, and when instead they are given unhealthy foods, they will take it; and that is why school lunches need to be healthy.
Secondly, kids on average spend around seven and a half hours with media a day. This leads kids to not exercise and work out as much because of the enticing “better” options to spend their free time. We need parents to hold the knowledge of how to fight back against the unhealthy options and teach children healthy lifestyles. Ten percent of parents seek help for their child or children when they are in need of help, the common feedback from the kids is that the exercise plans are a fun way to get in shape. This is what we need! This addition, fun exercise, on top of the unhealthy food and meal choices will break down the destructive equation for an epidemic of obesity and result in a healthier generation.

The Weight of the Nation video brought my attention to the obesity and weight problems in America, especially in children. In the video it addressed how many of the foods we are exposed to are a huge part of our health problem. It also says that us as people can change our ways to stop the problems.
After watching the video, one of the things that came to my mind was the question, why? Why have we been exposed to these products? Why are our our children overweight? Why is our country facing the the diseases of obesity so early in life? Well we need answers. I am so surprised that this has happened. America is supposed to be the freedom country but if we keep living this way we will be named the country gone wrong. One in three children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes. This is insane. We should feel safe eating our food and drinking our drinks. Well, we are not safe at all. Our food is so poor of quality that we are getting fat! We our spending most of our money trying to save our lives because we are having many diseases related to obesity when we should be able to spend it having fun with our families.
A shocking thing I saw in the video was the fact that school lunches contribute to obesity. At school we think of education, friends and a safe environment. We do not think fattening food, sugary juices and obesity. At school we are not supposed to be exposed to harmful things. People think of those harmfuls things as drugs, weapons or abuse, but what about food? The school cafeteria is trying to be efficient while serving us good food but that does not work. What will they choose, efficiency or health? They can barely afford schools supplies so will they be able to get healthy food for the children? I do not eat the cafeteria food because it looks like cardboard. I got the school food in the beginning of the year but then I stopped because I wanted fruit and something healthy. The thing I got was unhealthy food and unripe fruit. They may have a law for cafeterias to serve healthy food but the question is will it be fresh? I think that is a big issue.
The biggest thing I think surprised me was the fact that most schools were not requiring physical education any more. I think thats why a lot of kids are fat. Our body has a natural way of burning of calories. Its is called exercise. Children need to run around because it helps us learn better. If we are cooped up in a room all day we are going to go insane and burn something. People who do not exercise get fat! That is all there is too it. You need to burn off some of the thousand of calories you eat a day. Today less than 20 percent of children walk to school. That is a huge difference compared to thirty years ago. There is also no federal law that requires physical education in America. This is insane. I don't believe in taking PE all through your school years but at least up to your sophomore year in high school.
There is also one more thing I want to address. That is obesity and the diseases that come with it. The obesity epidemic started in the early 1980’s. More than 36 percent of adults have a cardiovascular disease and 25 percent of adults have extra fat in their livers! This is because of the exposure to all of the fattening foods that have become of this world.
We can stop obesity. We can not stop it as a part, but as a whole. We have to team up to slow down and end this epidemic. The weight of the nation can be reduced. Lifestyle high fat rates and high obesity rates can be ended. We are the executioners.

After watching a video called The Weight of the Nation there are a few things that really surprised me and shocked me. The first major thing that shocked me was the fact that they took P.E. out of some schools or made it optional. This is a big part of why the nation is obese. The other thing that shocked me was what the schools served for lunch. Parents believed that when they send kids to school they are getting not only a good education and if they buy lunch that they are also getting a healthy lunch.
I think that the schools should be aloud to serve sweet stuff or stuff thats not as healthy but it should be only like twice a week and it should be more expensive. They could also have a policy that says or at least strongly recommends that they should get something healthy for something unhealthy. They could also limit how much of that food a student is allowed to have at once.
Another thing that i was really shocked by the fact that 1.5 billion dollars are spent on marketing products to children. I believe that this money could be spent on something else that would help the whole country not just businesses. I also can’t believe because the children don’t know that the things that are being advertised are bad and it bothers me that the companies take advantage of that. I think that if the companies are going to market to anyone in particular it should be older people who know how to make good choices.

The weight of the nation is out of control and we have to do something to prevent it. Over 18% of children are overweight and childhood obesity is tripling in just one generation. One fact that caught my attention is that ⅔ of Americans are overweight. One statement that was made clear was that if you go with the flow of the American diet, you are sure to become overweight. America is said to be the “fattest” country and I am sure Americans don't want that reputation. Kids and adults who are overweight are more likely to gain health problems in their lifetime. It is said that half of teenagers that are obese will be extremely overweight by the time they are 30 and 1 in 3 children who were born in 2000 will have diabetes in their lifetime. Only 10% of parents seek medical help for their overweight children. I think thats a problem that parents don't even try to help their kids. Also, this is the first generation to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents!
Most Americans don't exercise on a regular bases and this is a big factor in weight gain. Also, having a TV in your room is associated with weight gain. Kids don't want to go out and play they want to stay inside and watch TV. I think for some kids it's kind of a safe zone to stay inside if they have problems at school or they feel insecure. Another problem is food marketing. Food marketing shapes what we want to eat and its not always healthy. The food marketing towards kids is predatory. It is critical to increase marketing for foods that are more healthy. This is a big contribution in obesity in America. Another contributing factor in obesity is, school lunches and 94% of schools serve lunch that does not pass the standard for a healthy lunch.
Only 5 states in the US require PE. So that means that 45 states don't require PE! It is proven that exercise improves brain activity. I think if America works together we can do something about the weight of our nation.

In the Weight of the Nation video there were parents, families, and children who were all struggling with their weight and wanted to do something about it. Some precautions that parents took for their kids was to seek medical help and with the parents knowledge of some of the fattening foods their kids were consuming the parents had their kids stop eating sodas, fast food, and just about any other thing they could think of. But when the parents went to seek some medical help the doctors told them that even juice could be just as bad as soda with 10 teaspoons of sugar in a 12 oz bottle of orange juice. Thats crazy! I love orange juice and for me to find that out it broke my little heart. So now with the knowledge of how bad some foods can be, sadly even orange juice, I will be cutting back on the sugary sweet drinks and greasy fast food.

Another surprising thing that I saw in the weight of the nation video was that P.E was no longer mandatory in some states and the people who fight for our health and to keep us healthy were outraged so they fought against this law and brought back P.E in Texas elementary schools. I can't believe that they would take away P.E. Kids need to run around! If our country doesn’t bring back P.E into all schools so the kids can atleast get some physical exercise, we are at risk for some serious health problems. Diabetes may contribute to 40% of the deaths that occur in the U.S. This statistic needs to be changed fast.

After watching the Weight of the Nation documentary in class, many questions and concerns came to mind, along with many opinions on the variety of facts presented. The general state of the U.S. is that many people are overweight and have many more related health risks than ever before, and is almost considered a complete crisis encompassing the nation. One of the biggest parties at risk here is of course the children of the United States. Statistics showed that 18% of American children are obese, and up to one half are at risk, yet many parents do not seek help (a measly 10% to be exact). Many have linked obesity and other sedentary behavior to television and therefore advertisements for unhealthy food products. The causes go much beyond simple television however.
No other kind of institution affects the children of America as much as the education system. It’s where we learn, grow up, meet the majority of our friends, but also where we eat most of our food as adolescents and young adults. Many schools serve lunches to students as required by state laws, however 94% of these schools in fact do not meet USDA standards for health. This is at the same time surprising to me and not. I was always aware of school food’s stereotype as being bad and mass-produced, but I had no idea as to the sheer scale of this divergence from common standards set by our administration. This should definitely be changed, and schools should make an effort to change this. However it must be brought into consideration that school cafeterias are supposed to be self-sustaining financially, so this sort of transition would be difficult. I believe it’s one of the most important things to consider when discussing obesity in American children.

After watching Weight of the Nation, Children in Crisis these thoughts occurred to me. I think that it’s unbelievable that P.E. is no longer mandatory in some schools considering that one third of people are obese and another one third are overweight. I believe that P.E. should be required in schools especially because obesity is becoming an epidemic problem and without P.E. it’s only going to get worse. Eighteen percent of children are obese. This is one of the reasons why I think Physical Education should be mandatory in every school, because of the amount of children who are overweight. Also the average amount of media consumed by one child is 7.5 hours a day. P.E. should start being required in more schools because children are becoming less active and are now consuming twice as many calories as they should.

I think that we need to be more educated about what we eat and drink because of how easy it’s become to consume calories and how portion sizes have gone up. Most people think that juice is healthy but it has just as much sugar as sodas. Juice and sugar sweetened beverages are the leading source of sugar, so I think that children and adults should cut down on sugary drinks. If children have a T.V. in their room then they are more prone to being obese, so I believe that parents should take responsibility and limit the time they watch T.V. or even take it out of their room. T.V. has commercials about unhealthy food that grab the attention of the children making them want the unhealthy product.

Many of the kids in the United States are obese. More than 18% of children are overweight. Childhood obesity rates have tripled in the in the last decade. Obese children have a shorter life expectancy than their parents. One in three children born in 2000 will acquire diabetes throughout their lifetime. Children are exposed to a lot of t.v commercials for unhealthy snacks. The food companies have cartoon characters (that the kids like) eating the food so the kids will want to eat it too. On average food companies spend 1.5 billion dollars on commercials. The companies say that they are offering healthy choices but there are really hidden sugars and fats in the product. Many people think that soda is bad for you and juice is healthy but really juice can have the same amount of sugar if not more sugar than the sodas.

Only ten percent of parents with obese children seek help for their kids. Over fifty percent of the calories children consume on a daily basis come from school lunches. Most of the parents think school cafeterias are feeding their kids healthy food but actually the school cafeterias are one of the main problems. Ninety four percent of school cafeterias served a lunch that failed to meet the USDA health standards. Serving an unhealthy lunch to kids can affect their behavior, attitude, and energy. Since schools have been serving this unhealthy food there has been many more reports of kids misbehaving. In december of 2010 congress passed a law stating that school lunches need to have twice the amount of fruit and vegetables and fifty percent more whole grains. Also at schools physical education is no longer mandatory. In only five states is physical education mandatory. Only Four percent of elementary schools, eight percent of middle schools, and only two percent of high schools provide daily physical education.

I watched Weight of the Nation: Children in Crisis, and was proud of a few parents who sought medical help for their overweight children. However, only 10% of parents with obese children search for help. To me, this statistic is disgusting. It is obvious that obesity comes with health problems. But do the 90% of parents who don’t care know that? It seems to me that if your child is at great risk for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, asthma, cancer, and brain disease at a young age, you would be worried. I do not know what motivates so many parents to feed their kids junk food, never make them get off the couch, and not care that their children are in serious danger. It has also been proven that depression and self consciousness come with obesity. I guess certain parents just don’t want their sons and daughters to be happy, healthy, and not overweight.
There has to be a way to help American citizens lose the weight that holds them back and reduces their lifespan. I’m sure Americans wouldn’t be too excited after hearing that the current generation is the first in history not expected to have longer lives than their parents. Because of this, I have suggestions for a skinnier future. For one thing, America needs to re-include PE as a required class throughout all schools--Elementary, Middle, and High. It is a problem that only 5% of states in our country require PE. If students do not like to exercise in front of others, Independent Study PE should be an option, like it is at Foothill. Improving school lunches is another good suggestion. Although the government has tried this already, they didn’t do a good enough job. Pizza is not a vegetable! But according to the schools which serve it for lunch, it is. Pizza and other unhealthy foods should be taken permanently off the menu. Serving only whole grain foods, true fruits and veggies, and milk or water instead of sugary beverages will help to keep children healthy at school. I do not think the small and few improvement made by the government are a sufficient solution to these children in crisis.

After watching The Weight of the Nation, many thoughts occurred to me. One of the thoughts was how major the consequences of childhood obesity is. The health consequences of childhood obesity include high blood pressure, asthma, cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, and many other serious illnesses. One in three children will develop diabetes, this is crazy!! Plus, only ten percent of parents seek medical help for their obese children. This childhood obesity is leading our generation to have a shorter life expectancy than our parents. Obesity is one of the biggest threats in the country!
School lunches are not as healthy as we think they are. 99% of all public schools in the United States participate in the National School Lunch program. Most parents think school lunches are healthy but 94% of schools failed to meet the USDA. Food consumed at school represents 40-50% of children's daily calorie intake. Some schools have the pre packing system where people stand in a line and pack different foods. I Agree with the Children In Crisis video, school lunches are being made way too fast and it is more convenient for the kitchen to mass produce it and get it out where all they have to do is keep it warm. I think we should slow down and look at the children's health and nutrition. Two out of three Americans are going to become obese.
Kids need physical activity to live a healthy lifestyle. P.E. has become a low priority in most of our nations schools. “If they're not bouncing up and down in the gym, they're going to be bouncing off the walls in the class.” says the director of CDC, Dr. Thomas Frieden. This quote is very true, kids need to run around and exercise. Only 8% of kids are passing the P.E. testing at a Middle School in Texas. It is not only the Schools responsibilities of children's physical activity, it is also the parents responsibilities. Less than 20% of kids walk to school now. Parents need to take away TV and make children exercise or at least move around.

When I was watching the HBO documentary, The Weight of the Nation, numerous questions and involuntary gasps filled my head as experts and doctors rattled off the most recent statistics on our nation’s obesity epidemic. One of the most surprising facts that was bestowed upon me was the statistic that 2 out of 3 Americans and 18% of children are currently obese. This shocked me the most because it really showed that the epidemic is all around us- not just in rural areas where fast food chains outnumber the population. This starts a snowball effect of so many health and economic deficits for both the individual and the whole nation and, as a result, $150 billion a year is spent on obesity-related health effects- all coming from our pockets. Essentially, this epidemic is making our bodies fatter and our wallets thinner.
Another issue addressed that shocked me the most was the lack of focus centered on schools. School lunches now have almost no nutritional value with 94% of schools failing to meet the USDA standards and physical education now becoming optional. The most recent statistics show that only 4% of elementary schools, 8% of middle schools, and 2% of high schools require physical education-an astoundingly low number. This lack of exercise and fulfillment of lunch foods high in sugar and fat leads students to become overweight and do poorly in school. It is a known fact that sugar-loaded foods such as chocolate milk cause an energy spurt as first but crash and burn after some time. As a result, kids become increasingly unhealthier and their focus and grades drop even lower.
Obesity is an epidemic that is affecting the entire nation- our neighbors, our teachers, our friends, and our children. It is increasingly becoming a problem due to our lack of focus on exercise and nutritious eating and will only continue to grow if not stopped. Children are already at the risk of living shorter lives than their parents, a fact that continues to shake me, but I believe that if more attention is brought upon this huge problem, a solution can be made. Let us raise our carrot sticks.

The children of America in crisis. They’re threat? Obesity. The documentary “Weight of the Nation” highlights the problems children may face while fighting the battle of obesity. In the opening credits a woman stated, “Obesity is out of control, but we can fix it.” Over 18% of our children are obese and we need to bring that statistic down so children can be safe. It is our job to regulate the foods that children are eating, the physical activity children are taking part of, and the amount of television children are watching. We need to make a future for the children of America.
A section of “Weight of the Nation” addressed school lunches. It stated that most schools participate in the Federal Lunch Program but only 6% of those schools serve lunches that meet USDA standards. Isn’t that appalling? Don’t our children deserve safe, healthy, school lunches? Most school lunches are made by assembly line with “fresh” frozen broccoli, cheese, pizza, french fries, tater tots, or other surprisingly unhealthy foods. Most of the dishes served to students contain loads of fat, sodium, and sugar. 50% of our caloric intake comes from school lunches, so schools should make it the best 50% they can.
In December of 2011, Congress passed the Healthy Hunger-free Kids Act. The act forces schools who participate in the Federal Lunch Program to double the amount of fruit, increase the amount of orange and dark green vegetables served to children in their school lunches. It also permits potatoes from being served more than two times a week (french fries, tater tots, etc), requires all chocolate milk to be fat free, and obligates that 50% of the grains served be whole grains.
Even if you consume a lot of healthy food items, if you drink beverages filled with sugar you’re still at risk. According to the video, 12 ounces of Coca-Cola contains 10 teaspoons of sugar, 12 ounces of apple juice contains 10 teaspoons of sugar, and 12 ounces of orange juice contains 8 teaspoons of sugar. 48% of our daily amount of sugar comes from added sugar in drinks. Shouldn’t we use our daily amounts more sparingly instead of wasting it on a can of syrup?
In the early 1900’s the leading causes of death were Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, and diarrhea. Now some of the leading causes of death can lead back to diabetes. It is our responsibility to keep the children safe, and all it takes is one voice. Let that voice be yours.

Many kids nowadays are obese, actually 18% of children are obese. There are many reasons why kids are obese like having televisions in rooms, p.e. not being mandatory in schools and food commercials targeting kids. These all affect kids and because of these things kids get sick.

Kids having televisions in their rooms is making kids obese because with t.v.s in kids room they don’t go outside to play. They just lay around and watch t.v. Also when they watch t.v. they eat snacks that consist of chips and juice. As an example when I watch t.v I usually have a snack like some chips or something not healthy. If they aren’t watching the t.v. they still use it to play Xbox or other games. Also if a parent is working most kids aren’t allowed outside because they could get hurt. Even if the parent is home most are too busy and don’t want their kids outside unsupervised. I mean yes they are protecting their kids from getting robbed but they aren’t helping the kid if they are just locked up inside because its not like they can run inside the house so kids just watch tv all day. P.e not being mandatory is also a big problem because sometimes p.e. is the only place some kids do exercise. If pe isn't mandatory kids aren’t exercising and they are just sitting around getting fat. Kids eating junk food for lunch and then them not running or doing any exercise. That they will gain weight but also they will be hyper from the sugar. They will distract the class and that will be the schools fault for not letting the kids have time to do p.e.

In the video “Weight of the Nation” we saw some contributing factors of obesity in kids and adolescents. Kids nowadays spend their time playing video games, watching television or playing on gadgets. However when driving through the neighborhood you don’t see kids playing anymore, where did they go? Children now want to stay inside and play videogames or watch TV. I grew up playing outside with the neighborhood kids, playing sardines, capture the flag, tag or hide-and-go-seek and that was 10 years ago. Have we really changed that much?
It seems the parents are also to blame for the rise in obesity. Why are the parents letting their children watch TV on hours everyday or let them have a TV in their room? The parents could never be home so they don’t know their child is sitting down all day eating chips while watching TV. Kids eat will eat whatever their parents by or them and a contributing factor to the incline of obesity in children is because the parents are feeding their kids unhealthy foods. If the kids are not raised on eating healthy foods, their eating habits as adults will not be healthy.
It seems kids these days to not understand the importance of getting physical exercise. When I was young kids looked forward to playing outside, now they look forward to beating a high score on the latest video game. The parents also need to make an effort in making healthier choices for themselves and their kids. Parents of the next generation need to eat healthy and exercise to be a role model for their child. People are calling this an “epidemic” but if we had a flu epidemic people would be much more aware. To me it seems people are not making this as public as it should be if it were an “epidemic.” Even though people are starting small with a couple videos and changes in cities, when are we going to start something? If a flu epidemic were to happen people would care more but it seems people do not care as much as they should about obesity.

Something that struck me as odd and just plain wrong when watching the video was how kids are “taken care of” in the public school system. Serving junk food at all times and no P.E. is blasphemy! When I was in elementary schools I didn’t make sense when they took away chocolate milk. I was seven and upset. You shouldn’t take away a kids chocolate milk but, as I got older I understood (sort of). Schools were trying to become “healthy”. Of course, at the time all it meant to me was no chocolate milk and running the mile every Friday. After watching this video it opened up my eyes. I’d never thought of school lunches as unhealthy, I’d eaten them almost everyday since I was six. The fact that 94% of schools didn’t meet USDA standards shows just how ignorant my views were. Just to clarify, that means that 6% of schools were serving healthy food. 6%! Watching this video really opened my eyes on what our nation has considered “healthy”.
Just the idea that most schools don’t even require P.E. is astounding. I remember P.E. being one of my favorite times during elementary school. Learning how to play field hockey or softball was a fun and healthy way to play with my friends. Perhaps if more and more schools started requiring P.E., obesity in youth would be such a growing epidemic. Watching this video has really opened my eyes to the type of world we are living in today and I’m glad we took the time to watch it.

    The Weight of the Nation
In EDA, we watched The Weight of the Nation, a shocking documentary on the effects of food and sedentary behavior on people, especially children. This documentary acknowledges the problem at hand, and it gives advice on how you can deal with weight problems. It unveils the hidden culprits of weight gain, such as fruit juice and TV.
Sedentary behavior is one of the leading causes of obesity and overweightness. With 80% of people driving to work, Children consuming more than 7.5 hours of media a day for 7 days a week, and 300% more of people driving to work since fifty years ago, it is clear to see that we are becoming lazier and lazier, which means our waistlines are getting wider and wider. Parents allow children to have TVs in their room. Kids are gradually losing interest in playing outside. This laziness not only affects our weight, but our social life and our budget as well.
Weight gain is caused by many factors, including irresponsible parents. Some parents may have the best intentions for their child, only to find that the 12 grams of sugar in the typical fruit juice is no different than that of a soda. “Sugar-sweetened beverages are the largest source of sugar in the diets of children and adolescents.” states the video. Parents contribute to this sad truth. Parents may not be aware that they are basically giving their kids sweetened water, which causes kids to gain weight. Other parents may be irresponsible, because “40% of every dollar spent on food is spent on food prepared outside the home.” Parents do not have the time or money to cook proper meals for their children, which means that they will turn to the abundant fast food chains for their meal.
In the 25 years between 1987 and 2010, the number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes almost tripled to 20.9 million. We can change this statistic if we all eat right and exercise more. This epidemic needs to be stopped. And we can only stop it by taking action.

After watching the documentary, Children in Crisis, I was appalled at rates of children in today’s society who are overweight or obese. Did you know that 18% of our children today are obese? Not even overweight but obese! And it’s predicted that ⅔ of Americans will be obese by 2018. That’s only a few years from now. This problem doesn’t only hurt our health but our pockets too. $50 Billion dollars are spent each year on health bills from obesity.
How crazy is that! Physical activity in the US has plummeted too with all the new technologies. Everything we have developed in the past few years is labor-saving, and that contributes to the less than 5% of adults who meet the minimum guide for physical activity. So where are all these adults feet taking them? To the cheap, overproduced fast food restaurants around every corner. In fact, the average American eats 5X more food than they were in the 1980’s. The leading causes of death today all relate to obesity; heart disease, cancer, kidney disease, diabetes, and of course obesity are the main chronic disease killers. While in the 1900s, the leading causes of death were flu complications, pneumonia, and TB.
Where is the physical activity? It’s proven that physical activity improves learning so it would only be obvious that it’s provided in schools. in fact only 4% of Elementary schools, 2% of middle, and 8% of High schools provide a PE class for kids. For these reasons, I believe that this video was a good representation of this crisis going on today. We need to make a change, and hopefully this documentary can show people what’s really going on, and hopefully, we can pass a law or bill that will help the well-being of our, and our children’s future.

Our generation of children have a risk of having a shorter lifespan than their parents. Some schools in the United States still have soda machines. But the schools that took out the soda machines and put in juice machines are still giving their students the same amount of sugar. If the school systems take out all the juice and chocolate milk in the machines and replace them with water it will show a slight decrease in the children's body fat. Also some schools don’t require students to get a fruit and a vegetable at lunch, they just let the kids eat pizza, hot dogs, tater tots/ french fries, etc. At Foothill they reguire you to have a fruit and vegetable along with you entree, and a juice or milk is reqiured as well. I feel that this is a good way to get kids to eat right and help them maintain a healthy diet at school. I think it is a good thing that the parents in this documentary are helping their children get fit and taking them to places that will help them understand BMI and that will help them lose weight quicker. I think everyone who has a child that is at a risk or is obese should watch this video because it could encourage them to help their kids like then parents in the video did.

    Children in Crisis Reflection
In this film I thought the weight in the children is unbearable because the weight of these children is just outrageous. I think the statistics of having 13% of children are obese and it is really embarrassing to have as a nation. The reason that 13 % percent of children are obese because most TV commercials are targeted towards children. The commercial I saw the most was probably the sugar cereals that are really unhealthy and bad for you and parents think its a good idea to get their kids these cereals because it has this on really small healthy fact on the front. Advertisement is one the number one reason why children are obese in this country. If we could convinces parents to get help and why that children could be obese we could have the statistics of having 13% of children being obese gone.
In this film I heard a fact that involve advertising.I learned that 84% of advertising is targeted towards kids.Advertising is the number 1 reason why kids result in being obese. For 30 years washington has been debating against advertising so kids can eat healthier and not look at the television and go out side and get active. Also if washington wins the debate against advertising of kids of being obese it can also solve other diseases that are relative being obese such as heart disease and diabetes which can result in heart attack, stroke, and liver failure. Right now 1 and 3 children are obese in america if we could just think about,”what will happen if I eat this” it will change America.

Weight of the Nation: Children in Crisis Reflection

I found Weight of the Nation: Children in Crisis very interesting, as it brought light to the fact that food is not only a privilege, but a responsibility. It also affected me personally, as I have noticed how much sugar, fat, and salt we take in on a daily basis, and started to take personal action on lessing the amounts of sugars, fats, and salts in my diet to a healthy level.

Personally, I think it’s an abomination that there are such loopholes in place in our school system that allows certain foods, such as pizza, to be categorized as a vegetable. I am also astounded at the amount of sugar which is not just in sodas, as stereotyped by health-craze mass-media, but also in other beverages, such as juice, energy drinks, ect.

Some modern health statistics surprised me, such as how in 1969 only forty-two percent of school children were driven to school, compared to eighty-percent now. Another fact was also alarming; how the number of physical activity jobs, such as jobs in construction, movers, etc., has gone down drastically over the past couple of decades.

The facts on health in schools surprised me the most, specifically those on physical activity. I learned that P.E. is not federally required, and is up for the state to decide durations of P.E. and if their schools have P.E. altogether. Other school-health facts that surprised me were those on school lunches, and how their unhealthy content is most likely one of the combining factors of childhood obesity.
